Spirit of '77 Junk - December*First*Twenty-Aught-Ten
So I think we all need to think back to the good times..
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts.. with a goal to foster community and people have really become a family here. So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here.
The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:As you try and navigate through the junk drawer, remember that you can use 'Zorro' on your keypad to mark a poster as dead and move to the next one and hitting shift-A will mark all comments as read.
- Be frightful, that every image posted shows down the JD, so use dissection in how many you post. When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be criminalizing.Pictures of cute cats are mostly 'preciated.
- Personal attacks and swearing will NEVER be tolerated
- Mentioning of anything is not allowed unless it's to say that it belongs in an 'anything forum'.
- Don't use the JD to call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads. However, if you need to call out someone from the JD thread, feel free to use the intercom system provided for your convenience.
If you are interested in learning more about BEdge slang, you can consult the wikipage.
word of the daze: supplication
I don't have anything more to say, except that I don't find anything in life really bums me out anymore. Also, I am going to start interviewing my parents, so I'll have their stories captured when they are gone. Anyone ever done something like that?
Go Blazers! See those of you who are cool tonight!

Now that everyone realized that the Blazers are a crappy team, can we also admit that just about everyone on the roster is ugly too?

I was listening to this one radio show and they were asking “What’s your Boise State moment?” My guess everyone here would say the 2000 Western Conference Finals. For me, it would be Thanksgiving 2010 when some lady brought four kids to my house and ruined my whole year.
did you post this on their site?
that might definitely get you banned

I got banned for cussing even though everyone there cusses. I was trying to get banned though. I’ve been banned from about 4 blogs so far. I got banned from Blog a Bull. I plan on getting banned from every blog on SBN.

The BSU blog was hard too. They just ignored me until I called them zaching zachs and I waited until the Hawaii game day thread.
It's fun when I do it with comments
It would be easy to go to the Boston blog and just write a fanpost titled “KG Sucks”. I like to write a really stupid comment and see how long it stays up. My Suns comment didn’t last long but I was super crass towards their lame butt head guy.
Sounds like a waste of time, but to each their own.

This will be good practice for my Developmental Psych final Idol!
We just studied this in developmental psych. Behaviorists now generally agree that there is a new stage of adulthood called “emerging adulthood” that begins after adolescence and continues to usually about 25.
Everyone is different, but the theory is that people aren’t entering into adulthood as early as they used to due to several factors; less non-skilled jobs being available now in the new economy, whereas before it was easy to snag a career right out of high school, and even easier to get a career that could support a family after getting a four year degree. Now days very good careers are more likely with masters degrees, so people are staying in school longer.
Another reason is that people are getting married later and having children later. This is another developmental milestone that is happening later.
Erikson believed that adulthood was defined by the identity crisis “generativity vs. stagnation” where adults seek to generate positively for their society by either raising kids, or contributing with their careers. The thought is that generally until one of these happen, people aren’t likely to truly reach the next developmental stage of adulthood.
#20
Nicely writ.
Erikson’s psychosocial development crises was always my favorite developmental paradigm, which, I’m told, indicates that I’m more of a social psychologist than a developmental psychologist.
I think ‘generativity’ is going to be my next word of the day.
Erikson falls a little more into psychanalytical theory of development, which has an unfortunate association with a certain famous psychologist / developmentalist who really loved cocaine.

yeah, fortunately there are lots of good post-Siggy psychoanalysts to be associated with.
I do like the conflict resolution aspect of that frame of development although I think Piaget is clearly the guy who describes early development the best.
Did that class go into the neuropsychology of this stage?
It’s fascinating to see the MRI scans of the brain’s changes — the cognitive-processing and decision-making areas of the brain don’t fully develop until someone’s in their mid-twenties. The difference between the frontal cortex of a 15-year-old and a 25-year-old is astounding.
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
Yes.
Was very interesting actually. Our brains development coincided with behavior traits of younger people. A good example is adolescents who have a developed limbic system ( which regulates emotion ) and an underdeveloped pre-frontal cortex ( which is responsible for planning ). Anyone who knows an adolescent can draw conclusions from this fact.

Neuropsych was one of my all-time favorite classes
At one point I thought about going into the field, but it probably would’ve meant being a professor (ew, yuck, academia). I’ve kept up with the subject a bit and read brain books every now and then, but have probably forgotten more than I ever learned . . .

rick reilly: the NFL is too much fun
There’s an easy answer, of course, but it’s the third rail nobody wants to touch: beer.
Without beer, the NFL would dry up and blow away. But how about stopping sales after halftime instead of the third quarter? How about opening up parking lots two hours before the game instead of four? How about telling the networks to stop showcasing single-brain-celled fans like Fireman Ed and Can’t Feel My Face Shirtless Buffalo Guy, dolts who give the impression that this game is slightly more important than their next breath?
apparently clinton remains an og
his wc bid speech
Impressive from Bill, statesmanlike, generous to rivals, full of anecdotes and examples, flattering Fifa, and subtly promising lots of cash.
incidentally
surprised that Qatar are heavy favorites for the 2022 bid. There seem to be a ton of unanswered questions. Like heat, where exactly you’re supposed to put the >500,000 people who’ll show up in a country of 1.4 million, and whether dismantling the stadia and sending them to developing countries (as is the proposal) is even feasible.
no
my understanding is that FIFA wants to give it to China in ~2030.
http://www.oddschecker.com/football/internationals/world-cup/2022-host
incidentally it’s very tight between Russia and England for 2018. The bookies don’t really seem to like Spain’s chances.
reading this sypopsis of the technical report makes it even more puzzling
On the flip side of the U.S. is Qatar, whose bid is on shaky ground after a damaging report from the inspection committee. From a contractually standpoint, Qatar did well and was described as “low risk,” but the operational aspect of the report called into question whether the country is capable of hosting the World Cup. Most damaging was the “high risk” grade the bid got in team facilities, not just for one issue, but three issues in the category. The bid had issues with most of the facilities needing to be built, teams getting only one practice pitch and the biggest one, a complete dependency on untested technology. Countering temperatures than can reach 120 degrees has been a challenge and the bid id dependent on new technology to cool stadiums and event areas, but it is untested and the report questioned it and the lack of a back-up plan. Of the nine operational categories, Qatar received just one “low risk” grade with seven “medium risk” grades to go along with the “high risk” grade. Qatar’s bid has long been questioned and the inspection report does this again, something that could knock Qatar out for good, but the bid was running on political momentum and goodwill since the beginning, something that can continue even if the odds are longer now.
there's no way Japan will win but this is a cool idea
We are talking about putting down giant flat screens in 400 stadia around the world. A FanFest for the world. (This explains why Sony boss Howard Stringer is on the Japanese panel).
“We are talking about a very big idea.”
fun fact, a menorah has 7 branches, associated with Judaism in general and also with Israel while the 9 branched candelabrum associated with Hannukah is more accurately referred to as a Chanukiah, though its also sometimes called a Channukah Menorah, and many people, both Jews and non-Jews indeed refer to it as a menorah.
Blow it up.
There's even less explanation for the Hannukah bush we used to have when I was little

The Donald for Leach
The Donald has a message for The U: Hire Mike Leach.
Donald Trump sent a letter to University of Miami president Donna Shalala this week, suggesting the Hurricanes hire the former Texas Tech coach to lead their football program.
Trump wrote the note on a copy of The Palm Beach Post’s Sunday sports section, scrawling it over the newspaper’s story announcing Randy Shannon’s firing.
University officials confirmed the authenticity of the note Wednesday.
“You made a big mistake when you did not take my advice and hire Mike Leach of Texas Tech … and you can now get him for the right price,” Trump wrote to Shalala.
Trump lobbied Miami to hire Leach in 2006, when they ultimately chose Shannon.

ESPN reporting Newton is eligible
Rules WERE violated but not badly enough.
From the official NCAA statement
According to facts of the case agreed upon by Auburn University and the NCAA enforcement staff, the student-athlete’s father and an owner of a scouting service worked together to actively market the student-athlete as a part of a pay-for-play scenario in return for Newton’s commitment to attend college and play football. NCAA rules (Bylaw 12.3.3) do not allow individuals or entities to represent a prospective student-athlete for compensation to a school for an athletic scholarship.
In conjunction with the case, Auburn University has limited the access Newton’s father has to the athletics program and Mississippi State has disassociated the involved individual.
"The conduct of Cam Newton’s father and the involved individual is unacceptable and has no place in the SEC or in intercollegiate athletics," said Mike Slive, Southeastern Conference Commissioner. "The actions taken by Auburn University and Mississippi State University make it clear this behavior will not be tolerated in the SEC."
"Our members have established rules for a fair and equal recruitment of student-athletes, as well as to promote integrity in the recruiting process," said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president for academic and membership affairs. "In determining how a violation impacts a student-athlete’s eligibility, we must consider the young person’s responsibility. Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time, we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement. From a student-athlete reinstatement perspective, Auburn University met its obligation under NCAA bylaw 14.11.1. Under this threshold, the student-athlete has not participated while ineligible."

The investigation is still ongoing FWIW

http://www.gazettetimes.com/news/local/article_08fea334-fd01-11df-a16d-001cc4c002e0.html
More than 300 people stood in a driving rain Tuesday night to show support for the Muslim community in the wake of a weekend firebombing that destroyed an office at the Corvallis mosque and shook a city proud of its diversity.
For about 45 minutes, an attentive crowd listened to speakers from Corvallis’ interfaith community before spreading out to encircle the building in light and in a show of solidarity. Despite the stormy night, the crowd’s mood was warm. People kept each other sheltered under umbrellas and relit candles doused by the rain and wind. Lanterns, flashlights and the glare from television cameras added to the glow.
Mohammed Siala, an imam at the Salman Alfarisi Islamic Center, thanked the crowd for going "above and beyond" to leave the warmth of their homes and bring their families out in a downpour.
"We can not find appropriate words to give gratitude to each and every one of you," he said. "This is what Corvallis is all about."

The Magic want Arenas?
The Orlando Magic have engaged the Washington Wizards in an ongoing trade dialog centered around Wizards shooting guard Gilbert Arenas, Orlando Pinstriped Post has learned. What Orlando would send Washington in return for the three-time All-Star is less clear, but the proposed deal likely includes shooting guard Vince Carter, according to a source. Wizards big man Andray Blatche, Magic forward Rashard Lewis, and Magic center Daniel Orton could also be involved. Both teams have a mutual understanding of what the trade might include, the source says, and it’s unclear what factors are holding up the trade. What is clear around the league, however, is that Magic President of Basketball Operations Otis Smith has his eye on Arenas. If Orlando is to make a major trade this season, Arenas will likely be the target.

Bill James has a formula for determining if a college BB game is over
Complete with cool little calculator
* Take the number of points one team is ahead.
* Subtract three.
* Add a half-point if the team that is ahead has the ball, and subtract a half-point if the other team has the ball. (Numbers less than zero become zero.)
* Square that.
* If the result is greater than the number of seconds left in the game, the lead is safe.

SAS and Dallas have played really well.
I’m sure LA’s recent losing streak hasn’t helped them, and their schedule has been cake which also hurts.
ah, that actually makes sense. Spurs have been insane. Where does he have NO? (I would look it up myself but never look at Hollinger’s stuff so wouldn’t know where to start, short of googling, and I’m lazy)

Tickets were $8 for the one I went to. Though I think they have one in LA like every month or so. I expected to be lightly entertained, which is what happened. I was reasonably impressed by one or two stories, most had okay moments but were nothing special, and a few were pretty cringe-worthy. The 5-minute time limit really helps.

If you’re Rich Cho, when you think about blowing up the Blazers as presently constituted? Still too soon? Another year, maybe?
John Hollinger (2:45 PM)
Still too soon. But the other dilemma is the blow-up vs. reload question. They have enough assets that they don’t necessarily need to start over. I don’t envy the situation in which he finds himself, that’s for sure.

Is Wesley Matthews a future All-Star, and could the Blazers build a new team around him?

Here’s a doozy. Who starts at Center for the West in the All-Star Game? So far I’d say Tyson Chandler looks the best. Thoughts?
John Hollinger (3:13 PM)
Both Duncan and Pau Gasol are on the ballot at forward, which is going to make a bit of a mockery of the selection process when somebody like Chandler or Nene or Al Jefferson starts at center while Steve Nash and Tony Parker aren’t even on the team.
Blow it up.
Steve Nash doesn't seem to have a great year to me
There would have been worse selections than Chandler in the history of all-star games, who has a number of double-doubles with a few blocks and improved FT shooting and percentages to boost already this year on a winning team.

The biathlon season has started
The Swedish women were particularly good in the first world cup even (15 km standard race), winning first and third with a young French athlete on silver. Both have married recently so I’m not yet used to their new names. And they are just coming off a stomach flu that had gripped the whole team, so I take that as a good sign for Joel.
Also I have almost 2 feet of snow outside now. And it’s supposed to continue snowing the next 2 days. I’ll take a picture the next time I can make a tour.

the shooting part needs to be more dramatic. Using a paint gun or something would make for better viewing, than the little circle just disappearing.
It’s amazing when you watch youth races in Scandinavia as a side event to the big races. Everybody sends their kids there, they get more applicants than basketball or football or baseball camps would get in most US cities. The base of the pyramid is very broad, so the top continually gets supply with top athletes. And yeah, in parts of Europe the main TV stations fill their Saturday and Sunday afternoon programming broadcasting ski/cross-country/biathlon/luge/skating events over the winter in much the same way US networks show college football and NFL.

For once I agree with USC
The NCAA’s decision Wednesday to reinstate Auburn quarterback Cam Newton without penalty despite the prohibited actions of his father surprised USC Athletic Director Pat Haden.
Haden oversees a program that was hit with some of the harshest NCAA sanctions in college sports history, in part because Reggie Bush’s parents were found to have accepted prohibited extra benefits from agents and would-be sports marketers. Bush’s stepfather also helped set up a fledgling sports-marketing venture.
"In the Reggie Bush case, when the parent [did] something inappropriate the kid and the school suffered," Haden said.
Haden, who succeeded Mike Garrett in August, said the Newton ruling is at odds with how USC is attempting to educate athletes and their parents regarding NCAA rules.
"I was always told the parent is the child," Haden said. "That’s what we’ve been telling our kids. If the parent does something inappropriate the child suffers the consequences."
USC is scheduled to appear before the NCAA’s Infractions Appeals Committee next month. Haden said school attorneys would probably review the Newton case.
"Intuitively, it seems appropriate that we would discuss it," he said.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Oregon has had one close game this year
Auburn has had one really lucky win (last week) and a few other games they could easily have lost.
Although of course some of Oregon’s scores are misleading. Their win over Stanford wasn’t really as much as a 21-point win for example.

The Cam Newton situation has a Blazers paralell of sorts
http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/95-suspended-star-didnt-know-of-dad-benefits-29294
In 1995, the father of Arizona Wildcats basketball star Damon Stoudemire was accused by the NCAA of accepting a plane ticket from an agent. Stoudamire denied knowing of the arrangement while his father, Willie Stoudamire, also denied accepting the ticket.
After the NCAA informed Arizona of its allegation against Stoudamire’s father, the school immediately suspended the star guard while simultaneously filing an emergency appeal with the governing body seeking Stoudamire’s immediate reinstatement.
In announcing the suspension of Stoudamire, the WASHINGTON POST reported that Arizona Athletic Director Jim Livengood said at the time:
"I need to make this very clear and very distinct. Damon has done nothing wrong. Damon knows nothing of what has transpired, and Damon has had no part in that."
The BOSTON GLOBE subsequently reported that instead of immediately reinstating Stoudamire, as it did in the Cam Newton case, the NCAA "suspended Stoudamire for the last regular-season game, reinstating him for the postseason tournament."

The BS report is really good. Tons of Blazers stuff. I transcribed some of it.
Simmons: “This brings us to the magical Phoenix training staff… but in all seriousness if there’s a team that can rehabilitate and save Greg Oden’s career I would say Phoenix would be the leader of the clubhouse. If you were running Phoenix at this point would you think about Oden?”
Kerr-" No question… Absolutely, particularly if you have a good training staff. Sometimes it’s just a chancge of scenery, but you look at the history of the league and there are guys like Zydrunas Ilgauskas who everybody thought was done with all the foot injuries, and he came back and whatever he did differently worked and he came back and became an all-star. Particularly with a guy like Oden you have to take a chance and somebody will. The question is wether someday will come in and throw big money at him… He’s only 22 so you’ve got to keep giving him opportunities for sure."
Simmons: …Oden is somebody who’s a restricted free agent who you really could try and blow out of the water.
Then later about Roy’s knee.
Simmons: This is the saddest story of the season and it’s been dwarfed by the Miami thing. This is a top ten guy who’s not going to be the same.

No, Jake, Portland has got to offer Greg Oden the QO.
If Greg Oden bolts, this team is dormant for the next five years.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
Assuming he doesn't take the QO
Oden is gone if that is all we’re offering.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Shouldn't the market decide his value?
If the going rate for a decent center is around 7 million a year, shouldn’t Oden get at least that much?
I guess I really don’t have an opinion on the subject until we see how Oden’s rehab goes. He doesn’t need to make hard cuts like Roy or another scoring wing would so I feel pretty good about him making a comeback.
by Nick Van Excellent on Dec 1, 2010 3:21 PM PST up reply actions
So what?
I’m looking at future value. If the prognosis is good, which it might not be, then I still think you take that chance.
The alternative is never, ever, ever, ever having an all-star level center.

The US is also bigger on the use of standardized tests in general than most countries, so kids have more practice in how to tackle such tests.
you should see how some asians (you can tell this is going to be PC) score on the GRE. Crazy good. China has basically wrecked the curve for the physics GRE.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
I know, similar LSAT, MCAT and especially GMAT. But that’s because they study a year for those tests. GMAT is making adaptations in 2011 and 2013 to bring in more of a speech component, to weed out people with really poor speaking skills which schools complained over. And well, those aren’t really intelligence tests. In the end, you just show you are good at solving those tests. The test makers claim there is a natural ability, but studying hard and knowing what the test asks and tries to do (e.g. if it is adaptive) definitely raises your scores.
I am pretty confident that other psychologist have equally valid measures of intelligence as the ones administered by Mensa

I’m pretty confident that the theory of multiple forms of intelligence or mental capacity is right, e.g. emotional, motion/space/location, movement/coordination where about all pro athletes excel, learning something by heart, and then some kind of “raw” intelligence. I think some researchers distinguish between 8 types or more.
I'm pretty confident that you are right.
At least up to the number of types. I only recall 6 empirically verified types of intelligence but I don’t know really.
And chess players can be amazing at memorizing games and recognizing patterns and calculating moves ahead, but poor at other things. I know a girl that can memorize whole card decks and such things in competitions, but she does it by story telling and putting them in “virtual” locations that she has set up associating certain cards with certain objects or locations she knows from her physical environment e.g. in a park or in her house. She is also certainly smart in general, but she ain’t no Hawking or Einstein, just a regular gal.
Yeah
I just checked the Mensa site — they mention that there are several types of valid intelligence tests, and that Mensa has their own test, but they also use other “approved” tests. They also mention that not all intelligence tests use the same scale, so a 132 on one test is the same as a a 148 on others.
Wiggada Wiggada Zers!
Yea, you really need to understand the norm used for each test.
Even interpreting a typical Stanford-Binet can have some variation in terms of where that score really means you fall percentile rankwise since they renorm those types of tests a lot.
That last bit is very true
I think the one I took in HS was the Stanford-Binet. I’ve taken several online IQ tests, and my scores on those have been significantly higher. Percentiles have varied, but all been in the same general ballpark.

This is pretty cool: Virgin "Project" Magazine for the iPad. But it's much more interactive than that.
With demo video http://mashable.com/2010/11/30/project-magazine-ipad/
http://www.projectmag.com/
The reader is free, an issue is $2.99. It’s not quite perfect yet with navigation a bit playful/unusual/toy-ish yet, but it’s the direction magazines should be going. This could easily put a magazine like Harper’s or People or Vogue on another level, or out of business.
One company that doesn’t get it right is unfortunately TIME so far, that’s more like a PDF although they could have the interactive content from sister-company CNN. And it’s way too expensive at like $4.99 an issue compared to about $25 if you subscribe to the print edition per year.
Also too over the top: Oprah and her blatant promotion for her coincidentally launching magazine naming the iPad her favorite thing ever. I mean, I really like Apple products and her gaga audience would probably have celebrated and screamed just as much if she had named a scented bar of soap her favorite thing ever, but that’s borderline blasphemy. A digital device with angels wings, and we’re gonna dance around it? Really?

Though Freeman said the same. Przy will join the team today, but only maybe play on Friday
Apparently Roy Hibbert can breath now.
After last season, Hibbert had his lungs tested in an eight-hour process at an Indianapolis-area hospital in which he breathed into a machine to get a reading on his windbags. When it was deemed what Hibbert called "athlete-induced asthma," the prescription for an inhaler quickly followed and Hibbert was on his way to an unexpected rebirth.
Suddenly, the breaths came easier, the frame felt lighter, and Hibbert went to work shedding weight so as to take full advantage of his new physical circumstance.-fanhouse

I did such a test when I got allergic to the dust in some stupid textile wallpapers I had in an apartment, together with an old sofa
Got much better again, though I do carry an inhaler if it once should return (and I know I still have a slight allergy to dust and some animal hairs and grasses). I wouldn’t want a full asthma. That was bad, I spent one night in the bathtub because I couldn’t breathe anymore in the living room.
I have allergy induced asthma, although I've never been Dx with it. I've never seen an MD for it cuz I don't want it on my medical reciords.
My mom just gives me an albuterol inhaler every year that lasts me the whole year. I Dx myself.
Every year when I get hayfever from the pollen in the air, I get a little SOB and night when I lay down, and can hear audible wheezes upon epxiration. It sucks. It gives me a little bertter appreciation for my patoients that can’t breathe. One puff on the inhaler usually does the trick.

Long twos, off balance three’s and out of control driving. I like his shot with his feet set and his cuts inside are nice.

God forbid I actually find something about this season to make it worth watching.
"I just want to win."
My problem with blogs
Is that Dave’s about the only person on this blog that points out both. The folks with blinders only point out the positives and the “realist” only point out the negatives. Even if they’re not really hating, it’s still all negative.
I’m not saying this is what you always do. I’m just kind of jumping in here. But it’s true about 90% of the time.
If the player in question does something good, it’s often pointed out with a backhanded comment.
And there are people here who just like to piss on people’s picnics. They search for flaws to point out and piss on the picnic. Just like the über fans gloat about their favorite players +/- after one game. Both these fans types are the extreme.
Pissing on picnics is fun!!
I can’t really give an accurate picture of what type of poster I am. Especially not this season.

MadBlaze has used KP2's dMult
I haven’t seen the process, but I assume it’s the loosely based boxscore one he’s referenced on the Wingcast. It’s pretty sketchy.
But all of the defensive metrics available to the public are pretty meh.
sMult combined with dQual
gives you a pretty decent picture of how someone defends – it’s not all I use though.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I usually use on-court/off-court +/- #s like ...
net points allowed per 100 possessions and net eFG% allowed when looking at defensive stats.

Looks like the challenge will finish 6-5 in favor of the Big 10 for the 2nd straight year after the ACC won the first 10. Ex Cornell coach Steve Donahue did his part for the ACC by leading BC over Indiana, but it wasn’t enough.

Donahue’s 2 losses at BC so far are to Yale (coached by the older brother of one of Donahue’s assistants; also the 3rd year in a row BC has lost to an Ivy) and Wisconsin, who of course Cornell beat in the tourney last year. They’ve already beaten Cal and now Indiana though, so he’s off to a decent albeit not great start.

I just think we end up about where we were last year if not better.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
you think we win 50 and get the 6 seed?? wow. We’d have to close with a 42-22 flourish to do that. That’s .656 ball over 64 games. We do that and you can choose my sig and profile pic for a year.
Blow it up.
Wouldn't put it past this group
Momentum is a funny thing, we get this turned around we could get on a good winning run.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

But I still believe. I know its overly optimistic and even foolish but I can’t help it.
I also think Roy will get into a groove and figure out how to play with what he has.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

I still don't think its time to hit the panic button on this group
We’ll see what Cho can do though.

I agree with both comments.
I still feel like we have some potential, but a loss on Friday would be demoralizing.
"Blaaaaaaaaaaaaazers, Come Out And Plaaaaaaaay!"

Re-tool is the new age word – we should do that. The demise of Roy is much overstated right now IMO.

Sorry man
Would that I could have been there.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I even showed up, which means it was really special
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
Had a Dave-style internet outage so I went to bed. Just watched the key plays.
Looks like the second half went less well and we dug ourselves a 16 pt deficit early in the 4th we couldn’t get back out of. But good effort at least.
Boston went en fuego in the 3rd
It was nuts, they literally couldn’t miss.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Marquis did a good job on Roy in the stretches I watched
Just getting very close to him, bumping him and not letting him get past so he had to take spins and fallaway shots. That’s the way to contain Roy now. And if you do that, it doesn’t really matter if Wesley scores 20+. Also when has Big Baby developed that outside shot? Stretches further out than LaMarcus now.
That's what I mean
And Pierce literally could not miss.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Batum will get out of this stretch in his career as a better player, and the Blazers with a new head coach
Or he will get out of this stretch of his career in Philadelphia.....
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
At the very least we'll get to see him under a new coach
Either here next year or wherever we send him
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Batum's lucky he's getting 15 mpg.
He’s now 4-19 over the past 4 games and his defense looks passive to me. He’ll get better.
I really like the idea of Nate not playing role players who aren’t trying .

Signing a minimum-level backup point guard like Earl Watson would've been nice.
Better than keeping Patty Mills.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
But without Patty
What excuse would we have had tonight for drinking 25 oz Fosters?
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
Reportedly the Blazers were shopping for one during the offseason/pre-season
Probably nothing mesmerizing came up and Armon started out well so they gave up on it, and then moved Jerryd when the pick opportunity came up when Nawlins desperately needed a Paul backup.
Right now it’s a problem, but I don’t think it’s our biggest one. And Nate sits Miller at times even when he would be available after a rest late in games.
That said, it wouldn’t totally surprise me if the Blazers pulled a larger deal around the deadline and one player coming back was a crusty old vet PG. Or if Oden’s injury exception or the Bayless trade exception would be used for one.
With the trade exception, I'd target Keyon Dooling.
Could send injured project Elliot Williams in return to Milwaukee.

"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
Patty was OK tonight
But he really is only useful against very specific matchups. No way he can defend most NBA PGs. Rich mans Barea would be his ceiling.

Oh sorry

Synergy is hiring part-time loggers. Shoot an e-mail to hoopdata at gmail dot com if interested. Deep basketball understanding required.
It’s a remote job by the way. Work from your own computer chair. Super flexible hours and you’re paid per game logged not hourly.

It’s pretty boring stuff, but well it’s an option to enter basketball work.
Cavs are hiring a programmer for their new stats database ;)
Use a video editing style software to set data points of shots made, shots missed, who assisted, etc. Similar to what LPBB is showing under archived games (at least on the international/premium version).
Hey, tons of GMs have started that way
Well not really. But it’s one of the skills required for video coordinators or their assistants these days. And from there on you might move on to more scouting/front office work. But yeah, that job is mechanical turk work and could be outsourced to anywhere in India or China at a moments notice.

But yeah, not a bad job for a college student or someone wanting to maybe get an internship with a team some time.
Just sent along 25 referrals out of about 100(!) inquiries. If I told you I’d send yours, I did. Only 10 positions open, no guarantees.

For once, UW should be an Elite 8 team.

I’m a little disappointed that our schedule is so easy until the tournament though. Do you think it’s pushing it to expect to win all Pac-10 games? I could see a couple schools putting up a fight, but most games should be blowouts.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Mariners, definitely.
Husky football and the Seahawks look to be on their way up though.
Also as much as I hate the Huskies as a Duck fan
I always have had mad respect for Romar.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I'm not a huge fan of Lorenzo Romar's unstructured run-and-gun offense, but he never ...
gets enough credit for the solid man-to-man defense the Huskies play.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
He is able to get his teams to play with incredible defensive intensity.
Being a Blazer fan and a Husky fan is weird just because of the huge difference in pace. Run and gun works in college though, I think.
I want to see Romar get into the Elite 8 or Final 4 though. He has proven he can get teams into the tournament (and even the 16 sometimes), but I’d really like to see this team get to the next level.
Listen I went to Girnnell College
Score 120, give up 110, run and gun taken to extremes, its basically the old Loyola system updated.
So I get that.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I'd say the Seattle Seahawks are about equal to last year regarding talent level.
The weak division, easy schedule, and special teams play have aided the Seahawks, though, as well as make an 8-8 record and winning the NFC West a distinct possibility.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
Hmm, I think the Seahawks must beat Carolina, San Francisco, and St. Louis to seal it.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I'd agree with the NFC West being terrible.
I do think that they are playing a little better and that Carroll’s coaching seems to be helping, at least in my eyes. I think it’ll take a few years to see whether he really has a positive impact though.
They really need to draft a QB though.
their best recruit in some time can finally suit up december 12th (roberto nelson). as bad as things look right now, things are looking way up for the basketball program.

Wikileaks is fun.
A senior Spanish prosecutor told the US Embassy in Madrid that Russia, Belarus and Chechnya had become virtual “mafia states”, new disclosures of classified material by Wikileaks show.
A cable also questions whether Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin is implicated in the Russian mafia.

What a shocker!
"Blaaaaaaaaaaaaazers, Come Out And Plaaaaaaaay!"
The original NYT article was fun as well
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/29/world/29cables.html?_r=1
It’s rather embarrassing for the diplomats what kind of bartering is happening behind the scenes, and how they collect information about politicians and their opinions of them, than really threatening security. But of course especially the ministry of defense can’t let something like that happen. The state department, well, let them be embarrassed by some of what their diplomats said about other diplomats.
P.S.: For the EU, a documentary done by a danish crew that was able to get a lot of behind the scenes material when they were doing a profile on the then prime minister who also served as the (rotating) head when the EU expansion was taking place was very good. He often forgot he was still wearing a wireless mic, and they got some priceless material. Like he opened a meeting and got angry when at the same time he saw the chancellor of Germany take the stage for a press conference announcing decisions about the inclusion of Poland into the EU that were not really all cut and dry. One of his rants was something along the lines of “what the heck, all I have left to negotiate about is the right to bear hunting or what”. Another one was when he entered a meeting saying something like “okay, I got 100 million euros to distribute. How do we do that? Okay, Slovenia gets 10, …” and one of his aides questioned “do we have to document this somehow how we arrived at that distribution?” and he looked up “what? Oh, naaah”.
It's strange how some leaders don't understand the importance of shutting up when they're around journalists.
General McChrystal is a recent example.

Boozer still looked tentative and rusty tonight, but the whole team wasn’t great. He filled the stat sheet, so he could be back to form soon. 21 minutes, 2-5, 1-2, 2 boards, 1 assist, 1 block.

glad a traded him and sjax for blake griffin and big al two weeks ago.

He’s no superstar but I think he can help that team. Defensively he’s mediocre, but offensively he’s ahead of Gibson and can form a nice front court with Noah. And if he runs picks with Rose like back in Utah and Thibs teaches him a bit more about team defense, they could have something going there.
I hope I'm playing an easy team this week in FBB

Allen Iverson and team lost their second Euroleage game against French team Asvel Basket 85-88. AI went 2-5, 3 steals, 4 assists in 20 minutes. He’s not exactly carrying that offense, but maybe that’s not his expected role.
Is he asked to facilitate? Or just score?
He seems to do best when he’s free to scire, and then dish out when it’s not there for him.
Sad story for AI.

Yeah, there were hooligans clashing during the 2000 European soccer championships in the Netherlands and Belgium quite heavily. And in 1998 a French police officer was beaten to a coma.
My brother read a book on hooligans ( he is a HUGE soccer fan, understands all leagues better than most people I know)
and he told about this book he read by a reformed hooligan who wrote a memoir, and described a guy suck another mans eyeball out of his socket with his mouth.

So I've come to the conclusion that "The Pacific" is the greatest war saga ever made.
Nothing else comes close as far as the brutality and horror of war. Yet you still understand wyh they’re there, and it doesn’t get preachy. I t just gives a view from the front lines. I thouhtg “Band fo Brothers” was the best for a very ling time, but Hanks and Spielberg really outdid themselves qwith the pacific. It is a masterpiece.
#20
this is actually really helpful
cos i’ve had it on my queue for ages. I loved band of brothers but a lot of people told me the pacific wasn’t as good. i’ll prioritize it more!
The opacific isn;t as enjoyable. It's slightly slower at parts, much darker, and quite doifferent.
It mainly followsz 3 soldiers in different prts of the pacific war instead of following one gruop like baqnd of brothers did.
This is because the regiment they followed in band of brother was actyually a mistake. No one regiment is supposed to spend that much time at the tip of the spear in a campaign. the group in ban of brothers was an incredible story.
The pacific is 3 very dofferent and touching stories of very dofferent soldiers. One was a soldier who worte a memoir that is regharded as one of the best war memoirs ever wriotten.
It is also mush more depressing, more violent, and more dark. But I highly recommend it.

Although I enjoyed more BoB, The Pacific is an incredible series too. Some scenes are unforgettable (Sledge falling in the hole with the maggots, Japanese civilians, etc…). You get the feeling that the Pacific campaign was the closest to hell on Earth.
Yeah I think the3 pacific truly captures just how unpleasant war must be.
It’s not just the orror of war, but the horror of being in the field waiting for orfers, and the elements, which are ogten the mosth lethal part of war.
In the pacific, you really feel like whrere they are is the worst place on earth.

well if "the pacific" is historically and technically accuratye, which im sure it is.
tje marines on guadalcanal still had bolt action rifles, and those old school WW1 water cooled machine guns, as opposed to the shiny new and deadly Automatic M1 garand and the .50 cxaliber machine gunm that the army had in Europe. They did get better equipement after guadalcanal, but that was ironically probably the most important battle of the war, and the marines did it with weapons from the last war.

Oh, olden times were probably way different.
Marines don’t need new stuff anyhow. They’re just dumb bullet catchers. In general, marines are horrible people and not worth wasting new equipment on since it’s just going to get dropped on the ground when they get shot.
I'm friend with some marines and prefer to think of them as "simple."
you have to admit, that if the feces hits the fan, you want toe marines fighting fopr you.
Also, marines are not5 as needed amymore, seeing as hpw our military is transitiioning to more skilled positions and more special forces. IMy friend Jesse is cross trained in like 4 different special forces units. he’s mainly attacking aggressive pirate ships in Somalia.
Perhaps just like said, they don’t need the good stugff because the skilled soldiers are doinfg theor job for them in thios different war. It’s not like we’re gonna be storming any beaches any time soon a la Normandy or Pelielu.

He’s too slow to guard 3’s, too slight of frame to guard 4’s.
I guess he is prjewct player that may ebventually pan out. He can shoot, so that’s something. If he can bulk up, be able to guard 4’s, and make that open 3 he could be a very good strecth 4 in the NBA, a la Rashard Lewis but that is probablty too high fort his celiing.

LA isn't really a good 2nd pick
We have two good picks assuming health in Roy and Oden – now both look bad.
LA is a good pick in the sense that the only better players from that draft were Rondo and Millsap, neither of whom were projected to go in the lottery. The alternatives to LA and Roy are pretty bleak otherwise.
Rudy looked like a good pick in his rookie year and probably still produces better than your average #24 pick.
Other than that? Taurean Green, McBob, Jerryd, Claver, Dante, Pendy, Mills, Babbitt, E Will, Armon….all pretty meh, albeit different levels of meh.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Just saying he isn't that fantastic for a No. 2 pick
Certainly not a bad pick though.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
If you redid that draft today, what pick would he be and how does he compare to other #2's
Wasn’t Bowie a #2?
Cos I'm bored.....
1. Rajon Rondo
2. Paul Millsap
3. Rudy Gay
4. LaMarcus Aldridge
5. Brandon Roy
5. Andrea Bargnani
6. Tyrus Thomas
7. JJ Redick
8. Kyle Lowry
9. Ronnie Brewer
10. Shannon Brown
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Yup, rudy Gay was probably a good safe bet at #2 also in hindsight. But his defense is atrocious.
I think LMA’s defense is light years ahead of Gay’s, which is ridiculous, considerihng his [hysical gifts. But I guess LMA has physical giufts too. I don’t know. I think LMa was a pretty danmed good pick up in that draft.
Did anyone predict Rondo would bl;ow up and become grsat?

Not really
Everyone wondered whether he could lead the 07 Celtics, how much of a weak link he would be etc.
Funny in hindsight.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I know rioght. He's their best player now, and one of the3 best PG's in the league;.
what an amazing contract they got him for.

Yes, Bowie was #2.
I loved Bobby Knights advice to our coach at the time. He said “draft Jordan,”Our coach said, “We’re gonna draft Bowie, we need a center.” Bobby knight replied " then play Jordan at center."
Best player available. always.

Should've drafted Michael Jordan, moved Clyde Drexler to ...
the 3, and never traded for Kiki V.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
He's good for that draft though.
No, not awesome, but good. He’s also fiunally showing improvement. He might actuallty become a foprce in the league.

.....
He is trying more this year, but it’s not working. I don’t know if you can call that improvement
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
No I disagree. He's been playing more inside, and getting more rebounds.
He’s still taking that long umper, but he’s playing more like a real NBA bog this year.

He is getting .1 more of a rebound while playing 2 more minutes a game
He is rebounding worse. I liked him going inside at the start of the year but after 18 games, he’s shooting a career worst .447 from the field.
His blocks have returned to pre 09 levels and his steals are up, but other than that he has been worse than before, not better.
It is the unfortunate reality.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
touche'
I thought it was too good to be true. I have just watched a lot of games where is really plYING well inside. I guess it’s still incosistent play though. So frustratomg. when La wants to be he’s an allstar. Why can’t he play likje that al;l the time. Reminds me of Sheed. Except without the very good man-on-man defense, La is better at weakside help and getit Itno passing lanes for steaLS.

IDK. That was a pretty weak draft class.
LMa was a prertty safe3 pick, and has turned into a [roductive player.
No, he’s not a stud,, but I’d rather have him than Bargs.
GHawd i’m wasted.

If that draft were redone today
LA would probably be the third pick. By that measure you can’t say it was a bad pick. Maybe I didn’t explain myself well.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
IDK. rondo. Roy, Milsap, then Gay, ten LMa is what I would think.
thaqt;s probably the appropriate order.

by dario argento on Dec 2, 2010 5:04 AM PST up reply actions
I revised that
Forgot about Gay. The order you have there is what I have up ^there^
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
yeah I know.
KP picked rudy, Nic, Brandon, Lamarcus, and pretty much garbage other than those.
Yes, Greg was a pick many teams would have taken, but sorry, it’s sttill a blown draft pick.

You know what I think about now?
Say we don’t take Oden (which I’m not in favour of) and we have Durant, Roy and LA. Then in 08, instead of looking for a point guard who can score we’d be looking for a center. There was a certain big out of Georgetown who, while lacking the ceiling of Gregory Wayne, is now a top 5 center.
is still kinda weak defesively – but that team is a borderline contender. Roy’s knees wouldn’t matter as much if Durant was here to carry the load. LA could be as passive as he likes. It would be fun to watch.Anyway, that is my piece of revisionist history for the night.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
You're not talking abot Lopez are you? Cuz I was high on Lopex in that draft and was shocked he fell so far.

he certinly finally looks very good this year. I’d lke to habv hin.

In that scenario, Nate McMillan would've probably developed Kevin Durant ...
like Rashard Lewis; thus, the offense still would’ve ran through Brandon Roy and his bad knees would be an issue all the same. Now, LMA’s development would’ve been interesting to watch unfold with Durant on the team instead of Greg Oden, since the touches would’ve been distributed differently among the positions.
And yeah, the defense would’ve sucked and the team’s ceiling would’ve been like the 2004-2005 Seattle SueprSonics.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
On offense
Those three plus Hibbert would make for a pretty good half-court group. Assuming Blake was still spotting up, Roy had the ball in his hands, Durant moving off the ball and getting decent looks off screens. Hibbert and LA are pretty complimentary pieces.
It’s not a title team, but it sure would be interesting to watch.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Kevin Durant wouldn't be moving off the ball that much, though. As ...
I said, he’d basically be a souped-up version of Rashard Lewis as a sharp-shooting weakside cornerman at the 3. For Durant, his touches would come most off of ball reversal when the rock swings around the perimeter and via dribble-drive kickouts from Brandon Roy.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I just don't think any No. 1 pick would be limited that way
Despite the fact that Nate’s system would naturally put Durant in that role, the pressure to have him in a higher usage role as the secondary ball handler and primary scorer, would be immense.
We’ll never know, but I just can’t see Nate being allowed to stick Durant in the corner.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
no way AK.
I respect yourt basketball knowledge, but KD is a gifted scorer than can scoire any way he wants. Insidel, outside, midrange, it doesn’t matter.
I’ve seen him make shots that don’t even have a name. streange floater teardrop while running type of shots. The kid is just nborn to put a ball in a basket.
Rashard Lewis is a stretch four with a better than average outside shot. Yes they have simil;ar builds, but KD hgas skils that rashard can nly dream of.
wow that is alot of mispeled words. realy drunk.

Nah, KD is too talented to be kept back by a coach.
Guy is a pure scorer, and always has been. If Nate was holding him back I’m convinced somthing would have changed.

We would have seen his brilliance in transition and on faqst breaks and it would be obvious taht he ios something special;.
ALSO, EVERYOne knew what a gofted scorer ghe was. I’m sire PA woulde habve made sure that his investment was doing more than just spotting up int he corner.

I've never seen Victor Claver, but from what I've read he's tall, lanky, athletic, and raw.
That makes me think of Austin Daye, except Spanish.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
He could be more of a Spanish Rashard Lewis
Circa 09/10 of course.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
No he has a much better all around bosy than Daye. He should be able to D up if he learns correctly.

Looks pretty scrawny to me.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
Fe definitely has a slighter build than the averaqge NSA build,
but I think has a nice frame to add muscle too a la Dante cunningham or rashard lewis.

I don' think it matters anayway, as we have little need for a player of Claver's caliber.
We need a star, adn I think we trade for one. Claver is some nice traid bate for a atrade.

by dario argento on Dec 2, 2010 4:37 AM PST up reply actions
He could be worth a shot as a backup three should we trade Batum
and Babbit continues to disappoint.
Freeland is the most interesting of the old stashes to me.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Freeland looks to be a traditional big, whereas Claver looks to be the european style big that can handle tha ball a little bit and shoot.
In this new NBA, where true pivotmen are not as vaquable, I thnk claver has a better chance of beinbg able to contrubute.
Freeland is a sexy prospect though. Mayve we could have the next Darko :)

At 6’10", that is scrawny but not pencil think like Daye

Luke Babbitt = Vladimir Radmanovic.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
Very possibly.
thatns not terrible, just way inapporopriate for a mid teens draft pick and trading Marty to get that pick.
IDK. We’ll see. He is an oputstanding shooter. He may be able to do some things.

Kemba Walker??
You haven’t heard? He is getting 30 a game on ridiculous efficiency. If he comes down to earth and averages around 20-25 then a lot of his basic stats match up with Jameer. They have similar bodies and both dominated at college to some degree.
Just throwing it out there.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Just now I read about him. Sounds gettable for us.
He shouldn’t go as high as the can’t miss prospect Kyrie Irving, but he’s slated to go #8 right now. that is doable from our standpoint. The question is, do we want to draft another PG?
Right now I say no. I think we should make a big consolidation trade and try to salvage the magic that had in prior years. Iggy would do. A big like Love would be fun too. I just think this team is pretty well constructed to fubnction around a superstar, and right now don’t know if we will have one anymore.
