Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Why we suck

Over the past few games:

Marcus Camby is shooting less than 40%

Dante Cunningham is shooting 24%

Armon Johnson is shooting 22%

Rudy Fernandez is shooting 32%

Nic Batum is shooting 35%

If you want to wonder why we're struggling and Roy and Aldridge can't carry the team... well - time to look at the supporting cast a little bit. These guys HAVE to start hitting shots at a reasonable rate. If you don't need to worry about Dante hitting the 12 foot elbow jumper, you can double-team with impunity; if Nic Batum isn't punishing overplays and beating the rotation, you can run whatever crazy defense you want. The team is one-dimensional because it's the role players not providing the other dimensions, the floor-spacing, that will make this team starting playing the way we expect them.

its no coincidence that

the whole team has struggled since Roy came Back? He slows the game and dribbles until hes stuck then passes out to a teammate for a rushed shot. Its factual! I don’t live in portland so I can actually watch the games and this slump is directly related to roy!

by skott75 on Nov 30, 2010 5:12 PM PST reply actions

I guess that's what made Blake and Outlaw

so valuable here. They could make those shots pretty well.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

sooo,

the last two years when we depended on roy to push us into the playoffs, we really would have been better without him?

Mike Rice: "Camby nearly rejected that with his Armpit!"

Mike Barrett: "Now that would be a fragrant foul."

by TheNoPoFuzz on Nov 30, 2010 6:01 PM PST up reply actions

This is NOT the Roy of the last two years.

If he can’t drive, he can’t pull in the defenses and allow easy shots for everyone else—not that they would hit the shots.

The Dude abides.

by BrewDude on Nov 30, 2010 6:34 PM PST up reply actions

Why isnt it a concidence?

The Nuggets played uninspired basketball and the Grizzlies played stupid and only lost by I think 1 or 2. I wouldn’t put much on those victories.

by Kaanyr Vhok on Nov 30, 2010 7:04 PM PST up reply actions

it isn’t that everyone isn’t hitting their shots, it is what shots they are forced to take because of a bad stagnant offensive scheme

by letusrun on Nov 30, 2010 5:14 PM PST reply actions

But they are missing open shots

I do kinda agree that they aren’t threatening the easy basket well enough. Still they are averaging more points in the paint than last season so that doesn’t tell the whole story.

Crackpot theory.

The team is losing to sub-par teams right now.
They just had a ‘team only’ meeting.
With stats this low, maybe the team wants to run, it’s not Coach Nate’s style, and they are tanking to get him fired so they can?
Again, crackpot theory, I know, but thought I’d throw it out there.
Thrash it or agree with it accordingly.

That is not necessarily a crackpot theory.....

it makes as much sense as any other theory I have read.

I guess if that is what it takes to get rid of Nate then so be it!!!!!

yes it is

They are not tanking. They aren’t playing with confidence. The energy isn’t there.

go blazers!

not to

mention luke babbit doesnt even see the floor. The bench has been reduced to rubble.

by BBG on Nov 30, 2010 6:31 PM PST reply actions

He shouldn't see the floor.

Babbitt is not a legit NBA player. He might score 10 but he’ll give up 20. He’s too slow-footed to defend in the NBA.

Roy's trade value has plummeted

We went like this, he went like that. I say to Hollywood: Where'd he go? Hollywood says: where'd who go?

by Black84GTI on Nov 30, 2010 9:55 PM PST up reply actions

I fully agree. Fully agree.

Stats can tell you a lot. Not everything, but a lot.
IDK where you got your stats from, manzell, whether you researched it or you had to calculate yourself. And lately I’ve been seeing this, but thought that I was going crazy…

Look at the box score. Just look at it. Sure, you have Aldridge and Roy consistently producing (I know Roy is not killing. But he is producing somewhat consistently). Heck, I might as well toss in Matthews.
Defense wins championships, but we can’t win a game if we can’t make a point, right?
Back to the first sentence of this para. Look at the box score. The only major point source you see comes from Roy, Aldridge, and Matthews lately. Everyone else: seems below par, if you ask me.
If you’re really looking at the box score (specifically the philly game): Iggy didn’t kill. No one scored more than 20 points. Yet, if your eyes move down the list, the numbers are fairly consistent and much higher than the Blazer’s supporting cast. Therefore, they have much more numbers to add up than us. Go ahead and take a look at it yourself. You’ll see a weird difference. We may have two 20 point+ players. But PHI got that supporting cast.

My crackpot theory.

Hope
This team has lost hope. The little bit we had left with the realization Roy will not be the next coming of Clyde. That coupled with what many believe is the final nail in the Oden coffin stripped away everything this team has to play for. We are now just another NBA team. Not a bad team— yet. But definitely not the team of the future. When you look at the Blazers two years ago they were not as good on paper. But they were playing for something bigger than themselves as individuals. they had unlimited hope. This team is reduced to 15 guys playing to get mine. They all know this team, if it does make the playoffs, will most likely be one and done, and most certainly not win a championship. So with the large amount of money sunk into contracts for what now appear to be over paid players or hands are tired and we wont be making a serious championship run for a while.

These players know that and they know that in all likelihood, if they (the player) is going to make a championship run it wont be with this team. So instead of 15 pretty good guys playing for a common goal you have 15 good to really good guys playing for themselves.

We went like this, he went like that. I say to Hollywood: Where'd he go? Hollywood says: where'd who go?
