There are some games I like to play when I'm bored in public, one is the name game, where you try to guess what strangers names are. My cousin said you can't guess Andrew for guys because all guys look like they could be named Andrew.
Another game is you try to think of what animal people around you would be if they were an animal, this could be purely based on looks or personality, or both. So what animal do you resemble? What about NBA players? Coaches? What critters do they remind you of? Feel free to post comparative pictures but please put a subject/title on your pic so we can minimize them.
After a quick search, this is not a new concept, but I have to say that their execution was not there, there is not enough fire in these interpretations...

Btw, El Classico is today, Barca hosts Real Madrid in the best rivalry perhaps anywhere in professional sports (one with profound political connotations historically if not still) at 12 PM Pacific.
Line-ups:
Barcelona: Valdes, Dani Alves, Abidal, Pique, Puyol, Busquets, Xavi, Iniesta, Pedro, Messi, Villa.
Real Madrid: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Carvalho, Pepe, Khedira, Xabi Alonso, Ozil, Di Maria, Ronaldo, Benzema.
Referee: Eduardo Iturralde Gonzalez.
GO BARCA!

If we’re talking pure political/religious hatred, Celtic-Rangers>>>Barca-Madrid, no?
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
In either case
Puts American rivalries in perspective. Very rarely are people who attend American rivalry games threatened with violence.

Well I know we're both happy giving up Batum for Iggy
That doesn’t mean you start a clearly inferior player who is also a worse fit with the other 4 starters.
I don’t see the logic, why risk the confidence of one of your best players? I guess they need to justify Welsey’s salary.

Wow, first of all, calm down.
We already suck, so a little shakeup isn’t going to make things that much worse.
Of course he’s not going to say that, but it doesn’t seem like he is that pissed off. He understands why Wes is starting tomorrow. He knows he needs to play better and seems to be looking at this as a way for him to carry the second unit.

Wesley played well starting for Roy
He was atrocious against NO. He looked good last night, once he was put in the starting line-up in the second half.
I just think that starting the lesser player and the guy who is a worse fit on both ends is stupid. End of story.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Batum has had two horrible games in a row
Over the course of the season he has been so much better than Wesley. Plus he is a better fit.

by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 29, 2010 3:21 PM PST up reply actions
Why? Are the Blazers not giving up enough?
McGee is legit center prospect. He averaged 17 and 10 per 40 minutes as a rookie and led the NBA in blocks per minute last season.
He’s actually improving as a rebounder, has a better PER than Aldridge or Camby, and is only 22 with HEALTHY KNEES.
I would do that trade in a second, but I doubt the Wizards would take on LMA’s contract.
by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 29, 2010 3:34 PM PST up reply actions
Hinrich and Gee have no value
McGee is still a project and makes more boneheaded plays that almost anyone in the league. He is a great shotblocker but his defensive lapses are pretty darn frequent.
We basically give up a 21 year old SF with sky high potential for a 22 year old C with sky high potential (while we already have one of those). Then it becomes LA for Hinrich and Gee, which is ridiculous.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I don’t think Batum has sky high potential. Year 3 is an important year to show improvement, and we’re not seeing it.
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
I disagree
In all honesty trading is about perception – other teams in the league feel Batum has sky high potential so we can get good value for him.
Plus, we make that trade and Matthews is our starting SF and Babbit is the backup. No bueno.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I think the crux of the disagreement here is that you still see the window is open because of your faith in Greg, whereas I see this as a decent first step towards starting over.
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
That's probably right
Having said that, even if we were starting over, I’d want to make trades where we get good value. I don’t think we get good value in that trade.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
It would be LA and Batum for McGee and then Hinrich thrown in to make the money work.
Hinrich has some value. Especially for a team that’s struggles whenever it’s starting PG leaves the court.
Plus it makes future deals waaaaaay easier. You could always flip Camby and Miller for something pretty great next season.
Frankly, I would be happy to get out of LA’s contract.
by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 29, 2010 3:46 PM PST up reply actions
LA's contract isn't that bad
It is most definitely tradeable. I’m happy to trade him but it’s not like it is a going to be hard to find offers for him.
Batum and LA for McGee is a total no-go. His stats are great, but his BBIQ, positional defense and overall awareness are a long way off.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Meh, Nicolas Batum seems like a pretty laid back guy. I dobut this fazed him.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
He is laid back, sure
But if you read his blog posts he seems like a guy who thinks about things a lot. A lot more than most NBA players anyway. I would imagine he has a opinion on this and I’d guess it’s not positive.
Going from starter to backup is a demotion. Players will toe the company line and say it’s all about winning but they know.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
is supah fly (is also a chucker, is also not better than Nic Batum)

Since as of right now, automated search engines can’t distinguish between why people link to a site (they might display Yelp or similar reviews below, but right now they don’t). That story will win prizes, I’m sure the journalist was completely excited to have struck gold. And that guy will be an Internet star, late night TV host, etc. And get quite a boost in traffic and sales now.
The music of the Clambake Combo sucks, they are the worst jazz ensemble specializing in Gypsy Swing music in Portland Oregon!

i totally knew nate would make this move
such a feeble attempt at making a change by making nic a scapegoat. what a tool.
the end is near.
PHILLY!
i don't think it's that big of a deal
matthews is playing better, nic’s whole thing was he can be good playing 17 min. or 37, coming off the bench, or starting, but he hasn’t been, so if he can still live up to that, i don’t care if he comes off the bench for now, jerry sloan put matthews in the starting line up after all, don’t mess with jerry’s kids.
nic is so horribly
underutilized in this system it’s sad.
watch wes sit in the corner for 20 secs of the shot clock like nic did, and see if nate benches him again.
PHILLY!
i dunno, nic can’t really handle the ball that well still, i wasn’t really super impressed with him when he “led” the french team this summer, I think he’s an awesome player, but matthews can “do more things” :)
nic is a complementary player that thrives in the open court
and can move really well off the ball.
this pathetic, stagnant offense is killing his game.
PHILLY!
was Nic underutilized in the French National Team or French Second Division where folks also questioned his ability to impact the game as much as his talent dictates?
"complementary player"
nic does not do well when he is the best player on a team with crappy teammates.
PHILLY!
'cause he's a really good complementary player
that can elevate the play of the stars on this team (by drawing away double teams and taking tough defensive assignments).
PHILLY!
but unfortunately
in this pedestrian offense, he’s stuck in the corner doing nothing for 20 secs while roy/la/dre go one on one.
nate himself has said plenty of times that the whole goal of his offense is to get isos for his best one on one players.
PHILLY!
I agree with this.
This isn’t like starting Joel over Greg or Blake over Miller.
We’ll see how both play tomorrow.

Its a big deal. Its overreacting to a few games by benching a superior player in favor of an inferior player.
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.

Fair enough. Its a short term kick in the butt, I could be could come around on it. For now, though, this reminds me of the Blake-Miller-Roy alignment last year though— another shortsided and ill-advised lineup change. If we start winning due to easy opponents, look for it to last for way longer than it should.
It annoys me when you say my opinion is funny. That suggests that you don’t take me seriously, which bothers me.
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
I don't think this is like the Miller/Blake thing at all yet... if Wes stays a starter after Batum has outplayed him consitently for 3 weeks, then I agree with what your saying

Shaking up the starting line-up is the move of a coach who doesn't have a damn clue what he's doing.
Batum was not the problem and Matthews is not the solution.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
when you think Nate is the Problem, there's not much he can do that you will think is OK short of resigning
the teams been flat, it’s fairly obvious that something needed to change in order for the team to right the ship… Nate’s not changing offenses or defenses at this point, so what would you have him do? would you rather a different player got benched?
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
by The Arkitect on Nov 29, 2010 2:58 PM PST up reply actions
I would give up on the “3 guards” and “no point guard” lineups, and rather try to see how long Miller’s body can sustain more minutes than how long Roy can and how long we can not fall further behind with Rudy, Roy and Wesley running the show. And yeah, of course Joel and Sean need to return so we don’t see any more Babbitt and Dante at 4 and 5 lineups.
I just thought of this while getting a glass of water
but moving Batum to the bench may cure the 3 guard thing since the rotation will be different and we’ll be substituting Batum in for one of our starting guards
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
by The Arkitect on Nov 29, 2010 3:07 PM PST up reply actions
I don't outright hate the move, I thought it was a possibility coming into camp.
The timing seems a bit off, and it doesn’t address the “is Roy breaking down” and “when to sit and not sit your best PG” things. That’s all. Carlisle puts guys in and out of the lineup all the time, and no Mavs fan really gets worked up about it. Neither would Spurs fans, though if suddenly Parker comes off the bench that surely would create discussion.
I'd rather you stick it out with the starting five you have
Putting Wesley in for some ‘scrap’ and ‘fire’? That is the least of our problems.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.

At Blazersedge, I’d save the word “shtick” to describe somebody like TiH. Now, y’all don’t get me wrong, for I like Tom; yet, he’s got an online persona that’s gimmicky at times.

Good luck searching
In terms of studying, I’m also one lecture behind, and probably will be 2 by tomorrow. But the results are very good so far, I know what to do the rest of the term, I just don’t want to read all that supplemental material which this prof really loves.
Financially I can bridge the time until my next project begins, so it’s all good. Technically I’m unemployed for a few weeks in between, but really I won’t file for anything. The last time I tried that a few years ago I only got showered in dumb bureaucratic stuff to do, meetings with a counselor to attend, and job offers I wasn’t interested in at all. And yeah, they also wanted to push me into a new cheaper (for them) health care provider. No thanks.
Was that meant as a joke, or am I the only one laughing?
Princess Leia: Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking Nerf herder.
Han Solo: Who’s scruffy-looking?
True, but even with reforms and simplifications and cost-cutting to the social systems it’s still harder than it should be in most countries. They do a poor job caring for two main groups, those being people who will only be unemployed for a very short time (say < 2 months) because they are highly skilled or highly in demand for who it’s too bureaucratic but who still would have a RIGHT to benefits (medical, retirement, whatever) during that time and people who will likely be unemployed for a long time (say > 2-3 years) for which they just give up and try to hide them somewhere in the statistics as “in training” or “in marginal jobs” or “early-retirement”. They mainly cater to the group in between.
Then again the market is very different in flexibility dependent on the country and the economic environment, making it hard to optimize processes also with every new administration starting their own little or big reforms.
I know
the hoops and loops we have to jump through to get unemployment insurance is absurd . Neocon economic structures sure screw the lowly (like me LOL)

No mass text from BRP
So I guess he doesn’t either
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
This is all we know
NEWARK, N.J. — As the doors to the visiting locker room at the Prudential Center swung open following another demoralizing Trail Blazers defeat Sunday evening, there were sweaty uniforms, crumpled up warmup pants and dirty socks laying everywhere.
An overflowing bag of trash rested in the middle of it all, next to used bags of ice, ankle braces and shin pads. Some players had to climb over the heap of stuff to get from the postgame showers to their lockers, using caution not to slip in their wet shower sandals.
#52
I'm guessing it was like 99% of all players meetings
Lots of people yelling and taking leadership and stuff.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I figured they just said
’So I guess we really do suck now, huh guys?"
“Yeah, we should think about playing better.”
“I agree. Good talk.”
#52
I kind of assume the same.
If they lose tomorrow, playing a sub-500 team (even on the road) after a team meeting, everyone hit the deck.
I hope they don't
I fear for the amount of work you mods will have to do if that happens.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I think Nate could use a good pelvic bone contusion.
But this is the NBA, Ash, where real leaders step up to the challenge of accidentally bumping into their coach to make a point.
I'd just sit in the back corner and observe.
Shoot, that’s probably what Andre Miller did.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I imagine Andre was like, "Zach this"

I’m already dreading the annual Best Buy gift card from my aunt and uncle. We’re gonna try to suggest no gifts anymore.
#52
i don’t like them either, but someone gave me a $50 card a while ago, so I bought that drive. Now I have a $0.01 dollar cent gift card.
I'll get you a virtual spider for "Farmville"
I’m sure they have those at Best Buy right next to the virtual tractors, ponies, …
Same one as my old one, the 32 GB model. But I really like the new display, and the camera, and it's visibly faster.
Though the camera is clearly worse than the iPhone camera, but I mainly use it to get notes into Evernote and not for shooting home videos. For that the new microphone built in and the better speaker is also nice. I won’t use the touted Facetime much either, for that I have Skype, and usually just as audio. I also got a cheap nice neoprene case, since the “Incase” ones I love unlike most hard and ugly plastic cases aren’t available yet for that model here. It’ll do, and it only cost about a fifth and is really good except for the strip at the bottom which is a bit too loose/flexible compared to the plastic slider models.
What Incase one do you usually use?
I really like the Incipio ones because they aren’t big and clunky. Both of mine are cracked from dropping my phone a couple times though, so I need a new one. I can never find one I love.
The sticky, rubbery ones are the worst.

The Slider (respectively it's predecessor on the one without the camera)
http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/slider-case-cl56505
Very sturdy, and I love the special material they use that feels soft almost like the neoprene cases (which I have right now) and not just like plastic. I know Apple pulled them from their stores for a while for the iPhone 4 because there was some potential problem if you got something stuck in between the back and the glass back and scratched it, but that’s really people not handling it right. Clean the device, slide the case on, and once it’s in, it fits perfectly. Slight rubber stains can get removed later easily with a cleaning cloth. I like those better than snap-on cases. And I usually don’t use display protector foils anymore unless I know it will be somewhere rough, the display is hard enough. Wasted about $20 on the last one and then just led it be, and no scratches.
They had a Belkin case on sale on Friday, but that looked just fugly when I watched a YouTube video of someone who had that.
The phone or iPod stays in the case, you can access everything, and the whole combo fits and slides around everywhere easily
I have it in my coat/jacked pocket though, not in my pants/jeans ;)
But it’s my favorite case I had so far, a very good mix of sturdy and still a touchy material. Comes with a tiny stand to watch video/podcasts in bed or on the desk too.
The next best was just that simple leather pouch Apple provided with a previous version of the iPod Video/Classic where you could still hit buttons through it while it was in the pocket. All other leather cases I had were too complex. And I hate glossy hard plastic cases. I do like that cheap no-name neoprene one I have now too since it’s a bit softer and fits the new very slim form, but I’m only beginning to get to know it.
I'm a little frustrated that the screen resolutions are improving, while the drive space is magically dropping
Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s up to 32GB, but it’s tough to go back from 160GB.
That will probably improve again as flash technology becomes ubiquitous
Though Apple already is one of if not the biggest consumer of those chips. They only managed to get the initial Nano launched at that price and capability because they promised Samsung to buy like half their supply for a year.
I don’t have a huge music library so that always fits. What I’m using the software for is just giving me the 10 latest unplayed podcasts and audiobooks and video lectures and such. Then it’s no real problem for me.
I'm considering a 32GB Zune (on sale at Amazon) for the same use
But I find it frustrating that I can’t actually encode videos for the native resolution without quickly devouring the available space. I’d rather both Apple and MS offer equivalent models that are slightly thicker, and have hard drives. I’m sure they see a lot less problems with less moving parts, of course. But it feels like a move backward.
Apple is abandoning magnetic hard drives altogether, and the industry will follow slowly over the next 3 years or so
The new Macbook Pros in the spring won’t have ones either, like the Air. Maybe you can custom-order some then, but the standard will be smaller flash drives.
(Which, if you read Christensen, is the very essence of disruptive innovations. He even uses the hard drive industry as his example even back then. With every circle, you get new technology that is cheaper but initially provides less features so the pros say “meh” but eventually it is the new mass market)
Beatles box set, both stereo or mono, is $129 at Amazon
They also have the red and blue albums for 9.99 apiece but they’re running out.
yeah i’m really tempted with the box sets. though i don’t know which i’d buy.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
The mono one has some of the classic sound, but is missing three albums
To my amazement, the mono box set specifically does not include any albums that did not have a mono version. They still make you buy the others separately.
So, even though I’d have considered the mono set, that made the decision easy.
I did consider just getting the red and blue sets though.
wow, you know a lot more about it than I did. thanks for the info, that’ll help the decision if I bite.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
I noted both were on sale recently, and did some research.
It’s the only reason I know, actually. :)

This isn't going to work Beavers (failed last year too)
WLB is pleased to have The OSU Foundation and Alumni Association Portland Office repeat lighting partnership again this year for Civil War Week. They are sponsoring all orange lights on the Morrison to support the Beavers in this long-standing Oregon rivalry. Note, however, that the OSU sponsors have agreed to make an exception on December 1st. On that day the Morrison lights will be all red to honor World Aids Day. Then the orange lights will return to complete a week of ‘Go Beavers!’ enthusiasm.

yeah, I have been to a lot of meetings for the purposes of scheduling brainstorming sessions.
just make a loud noise (like bang your coffee cup on the table), gather up all your things, and then sort of sit up in your chair (but don’t stand, that’s too obvious). It makes people want to wrap up the meeting early
i kind of wanted to laugh, when they asked how it made us feel. i don’t usually attend meetings at my place of work; it cracks me up when i’m in one.

So you are saying we could get him for cheap? And Kahn was right to pass up on him?
And Ziller was wrong accusing Ford and Stein of having an agenda against him when reporting about “sources close to the situation” saying he was a difficult character not even his old high school coach had under control? Un-possible!

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/11/mohamed_mohamud_in_court_to_fa.html
12:50 p.m.: Forty minutes before the scheduled appearance of Mohamud in U.S. District Court in Portland, a woman dressed as Mrs. Santa Claus appeared in a hallway in the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse.
The woman, whose real name is Carrie Whitman, said that she was at Pioneer Courthouse Square on Friday night when Mohamud tried to set off what he thought was a weapon of mass destruction next to the square.
She said that, at the time, she was standing under the giant tree that was about to be lit as part of the city’s official kickoff of the holiday season.
Whitman, 43, of the Wood Village area said she has taken part in the event every year since 2004 as Mrs. Claus.
Today, standing outside courtroom 11B, where Mohamud will make his initial appearance, she said she had come to the courthouse in costume to watch the proceedings.
She also added that Mohamud will probably be getting a lump of coal in his stocking on Christmas.
“Papa immediately put him on the naughty list,” Whitman said

plus it’s a classic letdown game.

I don't quite buy it.
Sure, sometimes you overlook a team. That happens.
But, if a team wins a “letdown” game, is it a letdown game? Are letdown games previously determined, or just when someone loses? It feels like we say “OOOH letdown!” when a good team loses to a bad team, but nothing when the good team beats the bad team.
My response would be, sometimes upsets happen. I’m not sure why we classify them as letdowns. Sometimes Cleveland beats New England. It doesn’t mean it’s because they were looking forward necessarily. It means they got beaten.
and sometimes teams get caught looking ahead, and come out flat. you can tell a difference in a team both emotionally and the effort they put out on the field. you think USC tried their hardest against oregon state in corvallis 2 weeks ago?
Super Rodgers Bros.
#20
sure! Sometimes teams aren't mentally prepared.
But we retroactively classify games as letdown. A team like New England always has a good opponent they’ve just played or a big game coming up. Is every loss a “letdown,” but their wins against bad teams aren’t…?
Also, why is Chicago due for a letdown against Detroit? Wouldn’t it be more proper to note the matchups with the Detroit line and the Chicago o-line? I feel like if Chicago wins, we’ll say ok, but if they lose, we’ll say “LETDOWN!!!”
If a designation is proper, I don’t think it should be outcome-dependent.
I hate picking between four QBs
Cutler vs. Detroit
Ben vs. Baltimore
Fitzpatrick vs. Minnesota
Eli vs. Washington
Eli! (man you have a lot of freaking QBs. Do you play 2?)
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
Washington’s safeties suck but we don’t have any receivers, otherwise I’d say Eli for sure as one of them. Ben always plays tough against Baltimore and I bet they’ll be throwing a lot, so if you get points per pass, he may be a good choice.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
Hehe, I thought about picking up San Diego like you, but wasn't completely sure and a bit slow.
It’s a wild guess anyway which ones will come through any given week.
San Diego's one of the best defenses in the league, and they have an easy schedule.
It’s a crapshoot anyway.
Yup. But so is Baltimore, or the Jets, and both have been up and down with weeks under 5 points. The worst team giving up the most points is usually Carolina, but they came through last weekend. You wouldn’t have had fun against them. BRP is banking on them sucking again but Seattle is shaky as well. And Peterson not being healthy ;)
according the advanced metrics I look that that adjust for schedule
NYJ/BAL are 8/9 in defense. SD is third.
We’ll see about Peterson. you did luck out facing me in the one week he might not be available.
It sucks! BRP and Jake are getting gimme games, and both of us are facing good teams both weeks.
obligatory :)

What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
By the way, I have Johnson available, but I might not use him
The NFL fined Houston’s Andre Johnson and Tennessee’s Cortland Finnegan $25,000 each Monday for their fight in Sunday’s game, but is not suspending them.
This in turn makes the Eagles D a worse play this week, otherwise I might have kept them even against a hot team like Houston. But without a throwing game, they might have been able to contain Foster. This way, probably not so much…
He goes with the hot flavor of the week
I try that occasionally, but in the end the higher ranked players who already produced something over the season probably did so for a reason
i think you 3 have the best teams.

What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
wait, I’m embarrassed I don’t know this, but if the ball goes directly over the upright, is it good or no good? what if it goes mostly just inside the upright but looks like it would just barely knick the uprights if they extended upwards to infinity?
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.

I found this from a college official
Question: If a extra point is higher than the post does it have to be 100% on the inside of the posts or does only a portion of the ball.
Answer: NFHS & NCAA rules: The entire ball must pass to the inside of the INSIDE edge of the upright extended indefinitely above the top of the upright.
NFL: The entire ball must pass to the inside of the OUTSIDE edge of the upright extended indefinitely above the top of the upright.

it's a weird rule... more digging says it's not reviewable either if it's above the uprights
c. Field goal attempts if and only if the ball is ruled (a) below or above the
crossbar or (b) inside or outside the uprights when it is lower than the
top of the uprights. If the ball is higher than the top of the uprights as it
crosses the end line, the play may not be reviewed.

I feel like there was a big thing about this in the NFL a year or two ago and they said it was good if it’s directly over. but that’s tricky because of the point you bring up in which an infinitely tall upright would make that a no good kick.

he’s played like a top 5 player all season.

Westbrook has a higher PER than all of them, leads the entire league in Hollinger’s estimated wins added, been very efficient at a very high usage, etc.
Not all the advanced stats agree and I haven’t seen that many games from all those guys though, so whatevs.

Help Dirty Socks on his economics homework again
Direct shipment of wine to individuals is illegal. Some wineries want the law revoked. The ability to ship directly to consumers helps small wineries and shipping bans unfairly protects home-state wineries, raising prices to consumers. Others argue that the bans allow states to collect tax revenues and to keep wine from being sold to minors. What would most economists say about whether or not this ban should stay or be eliminated?
a. Because there would be people harmed, lifting the ban would not be Pareto optimal. Therefore eliminating the ban is bad policy.
b. There are benefits to lifting the ban, but also costs, and unless we know these costs and benefits, we cannot decide.
c. Economists would argue that competition is good and the ban prevents competition. Therefore the ban should be lifted.
d. Lifting the ban would make taxes less equitable. Therefore the ban should remain.
Im thinking C but im not sure…

so he’s 50-50 if he’s our only player, that ain’t too bad. Plus, it’s a lot different for one guy to have a bad game along with an entire team having a bad game than it is for one guy to play well enough while his teammates still suck and help the team to a win.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
I’m talking bout the who’s its and the what’s its, bro. (I’m really just kind of surprised at how vehemently you dislike Wesley. I understand you being upset that he’s getting loads and loads of praise and a lot of people around here are excusing his bad nights, but I don’t think he’s a player worth hating).
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
by GiantBlazer on Nov 29, 2010 10:04 PM PST up reply actions
Sure it does
You are saying people love him because he gives it 100%, which is fine. I’m just saying that I’m not one of the people who’ll love a guy just for giving effort.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
At least you can appreciate he works hard.
I mean come on….it’s not like it’s rooting for Eddy Curry or something.
"I just want to win."
I don't think I've said I hate him
I hate Nate for thinking he is the cure to our problems. As I’ve said, I just really don’t like his game. I have no ill feelings towards him other than that – I respect that he is a hard worker and all that.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I don’t hate Wesley, but I do hate his shot selection, think he’s out of control fairly often, and think his defense is overrated.
I think he’s a slightly better Martell, just like I did when we signed him.
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
this
I maintain he is a cross between Martell and Bayless. He reminds me of both of them for different reasons (not all bad…).
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I don't know how he's like Bayless at all.
Bayless is the quintessential one super-skill player. Wesley’s a jack of all trades, master of none type.
by Cablinasian on Nov 29, 2010 10:10 PM PST up reply actions
The way he drives/passes/takes long two's off the dribble reminds be of Bayless
He is a more multi-talented player, sure. That’s why he’s a bit of both.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Wesley Matthews reminds me of Andres ...
Nocioni with his unhinged play on offense and flailing around ond efense.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I agree with most of this, I just don’t hate him. there have been players on our team in recent years whom I’ve disliked much more.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."

I don't hate him
What is it they say? Don’t hate the player, hate the game, right? Well I don’t hate the player but I sure hate his game.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Everyone playing better basketball would be ideal
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Because he seems to be getting none of the blame
All of the praise and has now somehow unseated one of our best players in the starting lineup. I find it frustrating.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Well I disagree with that
But yeah, Wesley would have to make a pretty big change for me to be impressed.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Not at all
He is still pretty early in his career. If he fixes his shot selection, learns to drive more under control and is taught proper fundamental defense (which by association means no more Nate), I’d be fine with him. I just want all that effort channelled more productively. Problem is, players don’t often change their stripes like that.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
well, you live in freaking New Zealand. did they give you tracking?
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
Tracking status hasn't changed since the 23rd
I was hoping today. They are officially outside the 5-10 days now
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.

Hey Cab. How’s the UW treating ya during the final stretch of Fall Quarter?
heeeyyyyyyy so dnrkhgu gotta go pl hdei and skeieek
eh, pretty good.
I have a group research paper and needed an interview. So I did what any reasonable person would do and spammed an email list, expecting some random prof to answer. I somehow ended up with a serious big wig replying, so my group wandered into his glass office and chatted it up for half an hour. Pretty cool experience… one of the times that UW being so big works to your advantage.
but not lookin’ forward to finals… bah.
That’s genuinely cool. Now you have an “in” that you can exploit to yore full advantage when attempting to take over the University through back-stage political maneuvering and trickery.
But anyways..
Finals week does suck, but my crappy week is this one. A group project, a group simulation and two very large papers due by the end of it. I only have one real final. My others are a take-home essay thing due sometime next week and my massive practicum that I had a couple of weeks ago counted as my other final.
Weird.
heeeyyyyyyy so dnrkhgu gotta go pl hdei and skeieek
oh, that's a nightmare.
I hate classes where the finals are papers and projects.. at least with my engineering classes, it’s just exams that I can prep for. No annoying group dynamics outside of the class I’m in.
Any interesting topics you’re writing about, or is it pretty boring?
Nope, It’s all pretty boring stuff right now. Intro to British Politics is essentially a gimme class with the paper a gimme topic — I’m just writing on the relationship between the UK and the US. My other paper comes from an interesting class, but the topic I have to write on is about ten times more dry than the average law paper. Just a very thorough report on a case decided by the Supreme Court back in the 1960’s.
Just getting through the dull stuff now so I can move onto the stuff I’m interested in later. Next quarter already looks to be about 10 times as fun as this quarter has been because I’ll be out of the basic theory in Poly Sci and done with the physical component of my Anthro stuff.
Is engineering what you’re majoring in? That’s one field that I can safely say I have absolutely no knowledge of.
heeeyyyyyyy so dnrkhgu gotta go pl hdei and skeieek
yeah, civil engineering.
I’m in fun classes like statics, engineering statistics, technical writing, and vector calculus. I will be glad for this quarter to end, so I can get on to some classes I like more.
So, you’re majoring in anthro and poly sci?

quarter system, so they divvied it out a little differently. Our Calc 3 was a lot of geometric principles… we stopped at double integrals. At community college I took calc 3, and they had us doing power series and divergence tests. Here, that’s some math major only analysis class. It seems that they distribute the material pretty subjectively.
by Cablinasian on Nov 29, 2010 10:08 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, I’m locked into cultural anthro as my first major and am looking at specializing in foreign policy stuff with my poly sci. I’m very interested in anything Judicial though, so law school hasn’t been ruled out yet.

My alma matter (Grinnell) recently ran a feature on the 10th anniversary of our last confernce championship season (2000-2001) in men's basketball
They republished my article in full from the Conference Tournament (written for our SID):
Enjoy and if its a little rough, I wrote it as a freshman.
In what seems like only a fitting end to a worst-to-first turnaround, Grinnell (16-7) beat Beloit and Illinois College this weekend to secure the Midwest Conference’s automatic tournament birth. Energized by the prospect of the first NCAA tournament birth for anyone on the team, Grinnell played some of the best basketball seen all year.
The Pioneers first faced #4 seed Beloit Friday night. In a very entertaining game that was much closer than the final score indicated, Grinnell won 120-109. The Pioneers were led by senior Cody Skarning, who had 29 points and four assists, and first-year Steve Wood, who had 20 points, five rebounds and six assists. Beloit was led by player-of-the year candidate Henry Grant who had 22 points, 13 rebounds and three steals.
With the win, Grinnell moved on to face Illinois College in the championship game. Illinois College had advanced to the championship after beating Lake Forest 70-57 in the other semifinal Friday night. The first half was very competitive, with several lead changes and ties and with no team taking the lead by more than five points. The second half was a different story. Grinnell went on an early run to increase their four-point halftime lead to double digits and controlled most of the rest of the game. Every time Illinois College seemed to have the momentum, Grinnell would take it back, and as a result Grinnell cruised to a 130-122 win. The Pioneers were led by Steve Wood, who scored 25 points, including 12 of 12 shooting from the free throw line. With the win, the Pioneers wrapped up their first NCAA tournament bid in five years.
Coach Arsenault remarked that, "My fondest memory will be looking over at our student section after it was clear that we had the championship in hand and seeing that “sea of red” grinning ear-to-ear. What a wonderful setting they provided. As for our play, the tournament played out very much like the regular season- any one of fourteen players stepped up and took their turn as momentary heroes. The victory was truly a collective team effort." Grinnell will travel to Illinois Wesleyan Thursday for their first round game. The winner will travel to face Midwest #4 seed Wartburg on Saturday.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I should say the last time we won the regular season and the conference tournament
We won the regular season but lost in the finals my junior year and then again a few years ago.

my dad went to Beloit for a year.
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
Cool deal
I still remember both those games quite clearly.
Ironically, Illinois College came back two years later and beat us at home in the conference title game (we were a 1-bid league and were 40-3 at home my four years there).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Did you guys ever play Cornell College?
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
I don't know if we played them in basketball
But we certainly did in other sports. I worked for the SID the first few years I was a student and I know we played them in volleyball and they may have been in our home cross country meets too.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I wonder how many applicants each year apply to the college thinking they are applying to the university, or vice versa.
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
Grinnell gets confused with Cornell a lot too
The student store actually sold a shirt that said “It’s Grinnell, not Cornell”

1.
A government failure occurs when the government intervention in the market that was intended to correct a market failure actually makes the situation worse. Such a failure could occur for one or more of the following reasons: (1) Government doesn’t have an incentive to correct the problem; (2) Governments don’t have enough information to deal with the problem; (3) Intervention in markets is almost always more complicated than it initially seems; (4) The bureaucratic nature of government intervention does not allow fine-tuning; and (5) Government intervention leads to more government intervention. Thoroughly discuss three of these reasons for government failure and give real life examples of each. (chapter 21)
2. A family is considered to be in poverty if its income is not greater than three times the minimum food expenditures for an average family of the same size, as calculated by the Department of Agriculture. Go to the website below and answer the following: © How many states saw increases in both the number and % of people in poverty from 2008 to 2009? (d) Which states had a poverty rate of 17% or higher in 2009?

NBA teams can sign down players in their first two years
Free agents can sign a general contract with the d-league, then the team highest on a kind of waiver wire can pick them.
There is also a d-league draft with eligible players at the beginning of the season, but that’s already past. And a new rule this year was that the d-league team can take 3 players cut in training camp by its affiliated team or 2 teams (of course only if those players want to and not go to Europe or Asia).
Idaho is a joke this year.
I like the Reno BIghorns and the Texas Legends.

Man, I was wrong on him.
I still say John Wall = Steve Francis, though.

And you'd be wrong.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
The only notable differences are AST% for John Wall and ORB% in favor of Stevie Franchise.
Beyond that, they’re like practically the exact same. Heck, the AST% isn’t even that wide of a gap.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
the other BIG difference is games played
Francis’ numbers are from a whole season, Wall may not have hit his stride yet

Getting twice as many steals is worth noting, too
Attitude wise Wall is nothing like Francis. That is key in my opinion. Statistical comparisons are always easier than actual stylistic and mentality matches.

Just statistically
The match was pretty good a few games ago. Haven’t checked recently. There are stylistic similarities IMO.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
We've been over the statistical similarities before
Wall has almost as many similarities when compared to LeBron James’ rookie year.
The reality is likely somewhere in between. One thing is for sure, Wall’s defensive desire and potential is far higher than Steve Francis’ ever was.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.

I should get rebounds and blocks (I love how dominant I am in blocks)
You should get FT% and points.
FG%, assists, steals and 3pm should all be close if the standing hold true.
You got a good lead in almost all raw categories today though. Need a big day tomorrow.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
ah yeah, forgot about blocks. Dwayne Wade likely ruins FG% for me. he’s done it in the past this season. Though it looks like Jeff Green was my real problem in that category tonight.

Age of consent should be 24
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
by The Arkitect on Nov 30, 2010 12:24 AM PST up reply actions
this is my reasoning
those too young to legally drink rationalize their drinking by saying that the age should be lower, or they are only x number of years away from legal age anyways, so why wait? if you lower the age, they will have the same thoughts, but they will occur sooner, so instead of a 15 year old sneaking booze, it’s a 13 year old… I know kids drink before it’s legal… (I did) but I don’t want it to become more accessible…
.
also, I don’t like the idea of HS seniors having legal access to booze

That's my argument. Kids make too much of a deal out of drinking to get wasted.
There have already been studies done on over-eating, and how parents present food to kids, and the profound impact it has on their future eating habits and overall health. These studies were done over one generation. I think society can change faster than most people think.

He does in terms of the 'player X isn't getting enough time' type of argument, which is way too common
But the reality is that players not giving effort does fall on the coach in the NBA, whether it should or not. Also, there is no mention of Nate’s flawed defensive schemes or the fact that the team does not do the things he harps on about. Coaching is about the ability to inspire players to do what you believe will help the team win. Nate ain’t doing that anymore.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Yeah I'm more concerned about his coaching than I've ever been for that reason. You hear him preach all these things that the players just aren't doing.

There was a Tiny Gallon/Magnum Rolle frontcourt in Main for little while
Before Rolle got waived.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Magnum Rolle is definitely one of the coolest names out there.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."

I really want to buy this http://decemberists.com/ (the super limited box set right at the top of the landing page) but it’s already a whole bunch of money for a freaking limited edition but then you have to pay 20$ for shipping. if something costs that much it should have free shipping, darn it!

That book looks cool though

I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
yesterday I watched the BBC series of "Sherlock"
to try and forget the 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Barça. Great series and great casting. Sherlock Holmes in modern day, writing texts all day like a teenager with his pal Watson just fresh from a stint in Afghanistan.
My parting though for the night:
If we weren’t an elite offensive rebounding team, we would be one of the worst teams in the NBA right now. All the other indicators, offensively and defensively, have us in the bottom 10 teams and quite often in the bottom 5.
That was not fun to look at. I advise against it.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Hmm, I'd say TOV% is Portland's best quality at the moment.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
I'd put it this way
The only thing saving us at the moment is that we take an above average number of shots despite our slow pace while limiting our opponents to the fewer shots than any other team in the league. I would consider offensive rebounding the primary reason we have this positive differential but you are certainly right that Portland’s low turnovers and ability to force turnovers helps in this regard. The team is borderline elite in both of those categories too, which I managed to miss somehow.
Anyway, that’ll do me. The Wesley main page thread provided much entertainment and kept me up an extra half hour but now I really am done for.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Yeah, the disparity in field-goal attempts is this team's one big positive.
In the 3,865 minutes played so far this eseason, Portland has shot 1,314 field-goals attempts and held opponents to just 1,195 field-goal attempts.
On the other hand, though, this team’s downfall is its poor offensive and defensive efficiency.
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
nate says
srap>efficiency. why work hard for high % looks when you can scrap for steals and O.boards?
Kind of worrying to me
Offensive boards and steals fluctuate a decent amount game to game – it’s not a good way to win consistently.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I was gone for a week for the thanksgiving holiday and it got really depressing around the site
although I did drop an image in trentedwards goodbye post.

Trivia: Name these three one-time NBA interim head coaches.
Clue #1: They all have first names that start with the letter T.
Clue #2: They all still work in some capacity for their respective teams.
And yes, those top two photos are of different guys—even if they look the same.
Bonus Question: At 6’11", this man was the tallest guy to head coach a NBA game last season.
Who is he?
"They say it has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory."
Answers: Tom Barrise, Tony Barone, Sr., Tony DiLeo, & Kim Hughes.

“The hour is ending, can’t you see
There is no way now, to get free
In the shadow of the season
Without a reason, to carry home
Without a reason, without a reason
And from the north woods
Down to the valley
In a world of hurting, I’m moving on
Out from the lighthouse
Out on the ocean
Can’t climb the mountain, so very tall
Said Lord please give me what I need
He said there’s pain and misery
Oh sweet oblivion feels alright
The hour is drawing ever closer
And rolling over, won’t let me be
In the shadow of the season
Without a reason, to carry home
Said Lord please give me what I need
He said there’s pain and misery
Oh sweet oblivion
In the shadow, of the season
Without a reason, to carry home
In the shadow, of the season
Without a reason, to carry home
Without a reason, to carry home
To carry home, to carry home
Without a reason, to carry home
To carry home, to carry home"
Depressing, yet beautiful.

there we go:
“This is basically like the big brother/little brother backyard brawl. I’m excited and I’m ready for it.’’
And … who’s the big brother?
“You know we’re the big brother,’’ Harris said.

this made me laugh:
A Tale of Two Cities
By Darron Thomas.
It was the best of times and, you know, the worst of times. The age of wisdom and foolishness and things like that. It was the epoch of belief and, you know, incredulity. It was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, but, you know, it was the spring of Hope, and we just keep practicin’, doin’ what we do, even in the winter of despair, just tryin’ to, you know, get better, improve, and things like that. We had everything before us, but we focused on this week, you know, ‘cuz we had nothing before us, ’cause we tryin’ hard to get better and things like that ‘cause we all goin’ straight to Heaven and Boise goin’ straight the other way.

Hello, hello, hello
ECHO ECHO ECHO! This place is dead.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I'll be in Madrid during the second Classico
Family heading to Spain from 4/14-5/3, might be able to see a match in Sevilla.
Miss the first round of the playoffs but I’ll do that any time for a trip to Europe.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Oh we'll be in it
We’ll get it turned back around.
I’ll spend the $ I would have spent on playoff tickets on other things during the trip.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Sevilla is really pretty, even outside the Semana Santa processions
Which look a bit as if the KKK has taken over a town ;)
I'll be there during the Semana Santa
So that will be fun.
Planning to go to Madrid, Cordoba, Sevilla, Grenada and Barca during the trip.
Never been to Spain before.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Oh, then that's great
I really liked that. Whole streets covered in candle wax from so many processions (so don’t go through wearing something nice). Hooded Nazarenos. It’s really impressive.
The train system is good right?
Planning to take the trains most of the trip and only rent a car in Grenada. We’ll fly Vueling from Grenada to Barca.
All we have for sure is our flights and our first six nights hotel in Madrid.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yeah, good choice
The AVE (high speed train) is great, although it can get a bit pricey. If you book in advance (>15 days) you can get great discounts. Madrid, Cordoba, Sevilla and Barcelona are all connected. You can get a normal train from Córdoba to Granada, it’ll only take a couple of hours.
Thanks
We’ll probably go to Cordoba and then Sevilla. Looked it up, its 3 hours from Sevilla to Granada.
I assume it’s not worth paying for first class (usually isn’t).

Drew Brees is your Sportsman of the year

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Better than making it Kevin Durant
Seriously, Kevin Durant was nominated.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
A bunch of folks
Cullen Jones, LeBron, Kobe, etc.

Yeah, if you use it in the "most influential" sense that TIME uses it would probably have to be him
They could have written an interesting story about the modern professional athlete, loyalty to a sports town, etc.
the way they do it is dumb
there’s no way you can write anything about Coach K, Rafa Nadal, Durant blah blah blah that hasn’t been written a billion times before. The Sportsman of the Year feature should be half about the guy and half about the times. Otherwise what’s the point, right?
Yeah, unless it’s something that’s a very rare achievement (so super bowl winners need not apply) it should be something that represents a trend, an important event of the year, a cultural shift, something like that. It wouldn’t even have to be a famous athlete that way.
To be fair to the American cultural context of this.
The ‘Who Dat?’ superbowl was not an every day kind of superbowl.
Royster might be the best poster on BlazersEdge.
What we’re feeling right now is just how Spurs fans felt at the end of their run of success, except that their run lasted more than 2 years, included playoff series wins and is still going on.
I still like Dave the best
I don’t really read to many comments these days
