A Junk to Give: 11/24-25/2010
So... holidays.. we meet again.
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts.. with a goal to foster community and people have really become a family here. So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here.
The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:As you try and navigate through the junk drawer, remember that you can use 'Zorro' on your keypad to mark a poster as dead and move to the next one and hitting shift-A will mark all comments as read.
- Be frightful, that every image posted shows down the JD, so use dissection in how many you post. When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be criminalizing.
- Personal attacks and swearing will NEVER be tolerated
- Mentioning of baseball is not allowed unless it's to say it sucks and you're glad it's finally over.
- Any comment containing the words "Kevin" and/or "Durant" will be deleted and you will be banned for the rest of this blog's existence; no exceptional play talk!
- Don't use the JD to call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
I hope everyone here has a wonderful holiday season wherever they are. Remember the ones you love and cherish all the time you have with them.
I remember a Thanksgiving I think four years ago. My wife was cooking a dinner at our house (which she only sometimes did as we'd generally go over to my moms or her sisters for dinner and she'd just help cook there). She was even making a goose, but then our dog Ziggy escaped from the backyard. She was no where to be found no matter how much we looked for her. It made for a tough Thanksgiving dinner. The next day, we checked the animal shelter, and she was there and SOOO happy to see us. Every time she has gotten out of the yard since then, she just makes noise until someone lets her in the door.
So, got any good stories to share?

UW and MSU playing a good one on ESPN 2 right now
Kevin Durant won me over when he went Rocky IV on Russia this summer.
What'd he do?
I’m guessing MSU won, had to take the dog out in the frigid weather
Kevin Durant won me over when he went Rocky IV on Russia this summer.
by blazeraddict on Nov 24, 2010 4:25 PM PST up reply actions
MSU won
terrible defense from Gaddy and Holiday led to two Summers threes, which put UW down four. Thomas hogged the ball and made a layup, they turn it over, and then Bryan-Amaning draws a foul. Makes one, misses the second, MSU makes their free throws and win.
Thomas didn’t do anything specifically, but he is always the reason that we lose in my brain. Ball-hogging/cocky/chucker. I wish someone would take him off our hands.
As a UO fan, I had the same frustrations watching Tajuan Porter who,
unfortunately for the Ducks, could be analogized to a homeless man’s Thomas (undersized gunner 1 not really interested in defense)
Kevin Durant won me over when he went Rocky IV on Russia this summer.

Woah, is LetsBlaze in NC? I didn't realize.
That’d be cool. And which of those games would you hit up? I think it’d be fun to see any game out there, but the Wake Forest @ UNC is the one that stands out best for me. Maybe I should wait and gauge their standing in a month or so and decide.
And yeah, LetsBlaze had the connection to Shav’s family when he was at Duke. I have to look up where exactly, but he should be in the area, and they sometimes play concerts in the area too.
Juwan should teach Bosh how to put a guy in a headlock

haha, indeed. I’m super picky and only eat a turkey and rolls each Thanksgiving, which means I eat a lot of turkey. I also spend lots of time drinking and chatting with family so I’m always very tired by the end of the day.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
Yeah I eat turkey all the time and it never makes me drowzy.
mythbusters did a show about it and concluded that you would need to eat something insane like 5 lbs of turkey or something for the tryptophan to be effective.
Man I love getting overdrank and overfed on thanksgiving though.

it’s good times. I’m lucky to have a very fun family so the drinkers of the family tend to get drunk and then we play board and card games all day while also watching football. It’s kind of a boring holiday but it often ends up being one of my favorites, even though I never really eat enough since I don’t want to steal all the turkey in order to get full just ‘cause I’m a picky baby.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
all my family makes is mashed potatoes and they make my gag reflex go crazy ’cause I threw them up really bad once. and stuffing is gross.
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
My family stuffing is the bestest
That and bread pudding is what I am bringing tomorrow.
Sausage, bread (duh), apples, raisins, spices, onions, celery, and love.

I put that and nuts, filberts and walnuts
no raisins though, I’ve used dried cranberries and apricots though.

But the host isn’t crazy about craisins.
I really don’t like nuts in my stuffing, though. Makes me FURIOSO.

I almost went non-traditional this year with bacon-apple stuffing instead of the sausage
Yeah some people ain’t nuts about nuts.
On another note my married friends who were coming over tomorrow seem to have separated for the time being so only one is coming over. They fight every year at the holiday’s so it shouldn’t be a surprise but it still is. Last year I got a phone call from the wife while I was having dinner with my family. This year, he is coming to dinner and she is not, as far as he knows right now.
Drama!

But seriously, while many nuts are good on their own, adding them to other dishes is the fastest way to ruin it.

No joke. Take a breath, walk in there thinking “I know this stuff” and just present it to one person while looking at the crowd.
yeah, I’m definitely better at them than I used to be. taking the required speech course at PCC helped. The part that really gets me though is waiting til it’s my turn. sitting around thinking about it gets to me. once i’m actually up there presenting I’m not nearly as nervous. I just psych myself up way too damn much during the build up
Still on the Greg Oden bandwagon. "Whenever I feel like I can compete with the best."
a little late now, but two things helped me.
My early presentations, I would give the entire thing, out loud, in front of friends. Later, I’d just do them out loud on my own. That way I’d figure out the places where I was stumbling on the words and get those down pat.
Eventually, I did so many, I wasn’t nervous anymore. I could even throw in jokes. I’m one of the shyest people I know- repetition definitely helps.
Of course, now it’s been years, and I’d be nervous again.
cool, thanks for the advice. and because my teacher is so stupid it’s not actually too late, though I may just never give it now since I’m not going to class on the 1st.

Although, you’re logical analysis of his game is too late to stifle my budding BE crush. This will manifest itself in at least one fanpost, vicious critiques of our current PGs should either have an off night, and borderline swearing in the draft thread when we eventually select someone else :)

My personal snowpocalypse was being snowed in in Zermatt. Was funny since all the electric cars ran out of power (Zermatt is combustion engine car free since the 80s). The police still had 1 or 2 that worked. Rolex shop owner sitting in his store with a rifle since the alarm was out. No lifts going, and storm strong enough to carry you uphill behind a plastic bag or two like a kite. One restaurant still had a working grill which was fine, and we had some gas left for a camping stove.
This is a bad sign for everyone

I ended up using Deborah Madison’s recipe, which includes a lot of yogurt and a some whole wheat flour — though next time I’ll also use some extra tandoori-type spices mixed in. What do you think of the guy who plays Dylan on ...
Modern Family? Who’s better looking between him and the David character who played the role of Haley’s tutor in last night’s episode?
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Because I'm biased, Dylan gets the nod from ...
me due to his height and hairstyle.

Here's the other guy.

"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
It's a opinion, but a wonderful one at that.
Who, if you recall, came up with that phrase?
Heck, I forget who first used it as a reply to me.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Wasn't that part of the legendary ULC thread
Where he gave you some ‘sage’ advice?
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I really don't know either
Funnily enough, the comment that got ULC riled up ended up being proven correct not long after. He sure was loyal to J-Bay.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Was it me? I think I remember a back and forth

You can only hope to contain her with parental controls for a while, but ultimately she'll probably be smarter about computers and cellphones than her parents ;)
Yeah, that's a big pre-having-kids worry of mine
I know what I woulda’ looked at as a kid… and I ain’t that worried about the sexual stuff. There’s so much awfulness that will be hard to filter and interpret and understand for a kid on the internet.

You just have to destroy every electronic device in your home or lock all of them in one of your rooms.
Don’t let them use that crap and make them play outside with the neighborhood kids if they want to have fun. That’s how it should be.
"Blaaaaaaaaaaaaazers, Come Out And Plaaaaaaaay!"
Technology is making people lazy and boring.
Kids used to go off and make forts, go on adventures, jump across streams, and explore forests … now they can do that in the virtual world. Laaame.

They will have fun on my island.
I agree with limiting the access to the lazy-making stuff like that.

Marks is the definition of a scrub though – I just don’t care cos he is playing scrub minutes and Nate isn’t playing him in front of Dante.

Cole Aldrich will be fine.
I’m more worried about Evan Turner.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
His lack of speed and awareness is jarring
Turner simply needs to be given the ball once Iggy leaves town and he’ll be fine. His rebounding and defense have been inconsistent but he has a lot of potential in those areas. Offensively, he is pretty awful off the ball.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.

class is over now, it ended at 9. I was scheduled to present today for weeks and she just over booked today due to the fact that she wouldn’t cut anyone off. And I’m not going to go to class at all next week so going first or last won’t make a difference. I’ll just email her next week when i’m “very very sick” and tell her I was completely ready to go today. She has my presentation in PDF file ’cause we had to submit that so she knows I had it done.

we've been posting on gamedays.
The weird long break messed it up.

We will get back into the swing of things on Friday
so people (cough MadBlaze cough) will stop whining.

Oh there you are
I didn’t know that. Surely the long (empty) break would’ve been a great time to get more exposure.
Just sayin’

As someone who doesn't really care about the NCAA or college sports in general
I find this all ridiculous. Thee is piles of money being made out of college sport yet they expect the athletes to partake in none of it.
Seems like a disgusting abuse of power to me – A whole lot of kids who have not much and have families that have not much are expected to put their bodies on the line for nothing over a long stretch of time.
It is just icky
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
While I agree with your general point
The kids don’t get nothing. They get a full scholarship. College in the US is expensive. That full ride is worth a lot. I’m pretty far removed from undergrad these days, but I’d bet that scholarship is worth no less than $20k per year, probably a good bit more, depending on the college.

20K's a decent estimate for a state school like UW or UO.
but it’s often more, especially at private or California schools.

How many of those guys finish college?
I don’t like people or institutions making gross sums of money with no compensations going to the people who create that money.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
"no compensations" is incorrect.
They are probably receiving well over a hundred thousand dollars on average.
Whether or not they finish isn’t the university’s fault.
and I don’t necessarily disagree with you. It is a bad system.
by Cablinasian on Nov 25, 2010 12:45 AM PST up reply actions
no compensations is definitely incorrect in at least one way.
I don’t know enough to make an argument. Simply looking at it from the outside, it seems horrifically hypocritical.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I see their risk at college as far greater than their reward

I hate using the word "fair"
But this is a case where the rule is simply unfair. I applaud young people like Jennings who find a way to gain employment in their trade. I’m a big proponent of college education, but it shouldn’t be forced upon anyone.

In fact, I'd have either of LeBron's last two coaches over Nate
At least as defensive assistants.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
A coaching staff of Mike Fratello as the head coach, Eric Musselman as the offensive coordinator, ...
and Erik Spoelstra as the defensive coordinator sounds very palatable. On the coaching tree, Spoelstra is indirectly connected to Fratello through Ron Rothstein.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
The problem with that idea is Pat Riley has no connection to Nate McMillan.
Anyhow, I could see a guy like John Calipari jumping from college at Kentucky to the NBA in Miami. The one way for that to happen, though, is if Calipari gets an endorsement from LeBron James, who may be inclined to play in the more free-wheeling, medium-tempo dribble-drive motion offense.
Yet, if Riley wants his own guy at the helm, then he has to look no further than the nearest mirror to find him.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Despite not particularly liking A Woj's style
That article has some good points. Nate’s connection to Miami would be similar to he perceived connection to LA – The star player thinking he is a great coach. It is beyond me why Kobe and LeBron respect Nate’s defensive credentials, but comments around the 08 Olympics certainly indicated that they do.
Bottom line – if Riley really doesn’t want to stake his reputation on pulling this group together and saving the season and LeBron, Wade and Bosh have fond memories of Nate from their Olympic experience (which everyone posits was the birth place of the Miami idea), then it seems plausible they would support a move to bring him in as coach in Miami.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Interesting to note
Even with all the consternation over his knees and what is going to happen with Brandon – he’s still better than Joe Johnson

Marc Stein is riddling your dream of Nash in Dallas with bullets right now AK
15 minutes into the 2nd part of today’s BS report. Still tension with Nash over his departure, trading him back to Dallas would be the last think Sarver would want to do etc.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
Doesn't help. That would be change for the sake of change.
Carlisle has increased the defensive focus, and Nash doesn’t help in that regard at all. Dallas needs a better SG/wing player to start and Beaubois back so Barea and Stevenson sit.
If they also could get a better backup PF so Cardinal and Novak are gone or sit 99% of the time that would be gravy. E.g. keeping a guy like Humphries would have been a good idea. Or just use Mahinmi more. Center rotation is finally no problem (and Mahinmi and Dirk can play C too if needed).
Yeah, the biggest thing is for the Dallas Mavericks to improve the wing position by upgrading from ...
Caron Butler. Something like Butler, DeShawn Stevenson, Dominique Jones, a 2011 first-rounder, and $3,000,000 in cash considerations to Phoenix for Jason Richardson and Grant HIll would do the trick.

"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
You've moved on from getting Iggy to Dallas?
From what he was saying, Phoenix and Dallas are very unlikely trade partners. I don’t know how much personal relationships come into dealing in the NBA, but if it is anything like the rest of the professional world, I’m guessing personal grievances have a large role to play.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
I don't think Dallas could get Iggy without giving up Beaubois at least.
They could have had Amare and draft picks, It doesn’t seem like they would settle for a package built around Butler.
by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 25, 2010 2:25 PM PST up reply actions
If they have to give up Beaubois to make a run at the title, so be it
Iggy would go a long way towards pushing that roster over the top.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
It was actually one of the best he's done
House and Stein both have better practical knowledge of the NBA, while BS is throwing out looney trade idea after looney trade idea.
The Rashard for Arenas one actually makes sense, seeing as Rashards deal expires in a couple of years (according to Storyteller’s site) while Arenas has a player option to extend his for a 3rd year.

Haha, just figured out my cable provider screwed itself
They acquired the rights to at least 4 NFL games per week incl Sunday Night and Monday Night Football to upgrade the perception of their otherwise pretty crappy free tv sports channel starting immediately (or already this month). That’s pretty much the only thing why I still pay for their premium offering that includes ESPN America that shows the exact same games this week. 60 games or so the rest of the season including playoffs and super bowl. See you later, maybe in the spring or so when baseball starts. I don’t care much for ice hockey, college football, and I get March Madness better online and free.
At the very least I’ll negotiate about a free HD DVR that they now have in their offering for new customers if I stay ;)

Got my Corvid on and completed maybe my most difficult googling operation this year. Found a song whose name and artist I didn't know, and a sample of which I had only heard once for 30 seconds.
And unfortunately a lot of more well-known artists flooded the search for Google results with similar lyrics (e.g. Cam’ron and Chris Brown). And automated audio finding services didn’t find it. And iTunes and Amazon don’t have that info (or as I found out now even that song).
It’s a pretty unknown rapper named Seth Marcel from upstate NY with a really crappy website by a really crappy designer. I hope that’s not really his official one ;)
Somehow his song managed to get used for the closing credits of an Entourage episode way back when but wasn’t listed there (season 1 “The Script and the Sherpa”, which is how I ultimately found it by some fans who record all kinds of minute details like that). I kinda like that song, especially considering how hard it was to find it after searching for it unsuccessfully for about 3 times before.
Come on (no real video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9OogdExyV4
At least he's a Sixers and not a Knicks fan. Or maybe he was an AI fan. And he looks like a nice guy.

It wasn’t so much about the song, it was about the journey of finding it since I wanted to find out what it was dammit ;)

I love reading old articles with predictions
From an April 2000 Executive Edge on a Gartner conference about “dot coms vs not coms”, statement by “management expert” Gary Hamel:
Hamel listed General Electric Capital and Houston-based oil and gas pipeline company Enron, which has transformed itself into an Internet-based electricity power trader, as two successful companies that fit this category.
He also wrote a far too positive profile of Enron in his book Leading The Revolution, so it fits that he used that as an example in this talk. Captain Hindsight sez: WRONG
The whole article is funny. A bank CEO from Midland States Bancorp worries about an Internet-only service called our-lives.com that is taking away professional women with high income in the Cincinnati area by offering services like errants, dinner reservations, reappearing gift buys, checking accounts (with another bank), etc. And another one called Concierge2235.com. All the experts and the audience lecture him about being too focused on the products he can offer and not the services the customers need and his crappy Internet strategy. Both companies disappeared with the dot com boom, and you can buy both domains now if you want to. While Midland is still going strong. Currently there is a new bubble forming with internet services without real revenue models (like most of those free image hosting companies that formed around Twitter and cellphones), but since few are listed on stock exchanges it won’t affect many people if they go bust. Just some venture capital companies.
I already wrote "Unrec" in Ben's fanshot

anyone else every plays Spoons? We play every year at thanksgiving and it’s my favorite part. My family is insanely competitive so we always get bruises and scratches. I won this year, so I am the undisputed coolest guy ever.

I’m spending way too much money. :-/

too much! I spent 118 at Express (in addition to the 88 I spent at Gap and 50ish at Original Penguin earlier this week), 35 on Reach, 14 on Uncharted (such a good deal for a game I’ve wanted for a while!) and Weeds season 5 so far. I’m also still maybe going to spent 280 on an ipod touch that kicks a 20$ amazon gift card back my way. And that’s not counting the actual super good deals that are gonna be tomorrow only.
How about you?

good, probably the most relaxed since we started doing it at our house.
Ate way too much, I’m actually still full. But it was super good. My soon to be mom-in-law hugged me afterwards, and she never hugs people, so I guess I did alright.

Very good
My highlights:
Mashed potatoes with regular potatoes, yams and parsnips
Pumpkin cheesecake
Mock cherry crisp

I posted the recipe for mock cherry pie in the other JD
Here. I’m not wild about pies as a delivery method for fruity goodness. I prefer a crisp. It’s easier to make and deliciouser. I haven’t done the mock cherry as a crisp before. It was exceptionally good.

Surprisingly similar
But better, to me. I recommend giving it a whirl.

I will pass it along to the baker in the house, it sounds good. I bet the sweetness of the raisins plays off of the tartness of the cranberries to give a taste similar to the sweet-tart Montmorency Cherries
which also have a slightly citrus characteristic. Sounds delicious!

I had a Turkey sub
Now about to try out GT5. Here’s hoping it is better than reported.
I believe in Greg Oden. I believe in Brandon Roy, too.
it's a mixed bag. I expected the graphics to be better, and you will spend a lot of time in menus not driving. The driving is awesome though.

Mine was stressed
Some lady showed up with 4 kids, one quiet one that’s 8 or 9 and three really loud ones, twin girls at 4, and a boy at 2. I thought for sure my dog was going to bite one of them because he liked chasing them.
that’s a really good deal. don’t you freaking hate that?! a lot of the stuff i want is really cheap right now and my family doesn’t really do internet so I can’t tell them to buy me things during the next couple days.

I just ordered my holiday present from my in-laws. I get what I want. They do no work. It’s a win-win.

I did notify my parents of a groupon a few weeks ago.
And told them they could spend fifty to give me a hundred dollars of happiness. They gladly complied.

hahaha, nice. Since these are the ones I thought Cloudy was saying he got for 15. 68 dollar bucks is still a really good deal. I agree with doing what your next comment says your gonna do.

I drove my grandmother back down to Salem after dinner tonight
When we drove by Woodburn on the way down at a little after 7, the freeway was all clear, but there was a huge line of cars waiting to get into the mall.
On the way back home at about 7:45, the right lane of the freeway (southbound) was already backed up over half a mile. It’s insanity.

Haven't these people heard of the internet?
There’s no need for this. I guess some people get off on this kind of shopping. It is my worst idea of hell.
