I'm not worrying anymore
I will be the first one to tell you that upon hearing the news about Greg Oden out for another year, and Brandon no longer having any menisci left in both knees I panicked just like everyone else did, and is still doing. But now that the initial shock is done with, I feel like I'm finally coming to my senses and can think rationally about our team. Hear me out here.
The Blazers had the second most injuries in the league last year(I would argue our injuries were harder to overcome seeing as our players are better then the warriors, and this isn't accounting for our health of our coaches and front office), and we still were a 50 win team last year. We had Juwon Howard playing center for much of the season for us, and didn't acquire Camby until the latter part of the season.
How we were able to still be a very good team last year despite these injuries makes me to believe it's more then just our teams depth, and talent. I think the Blazers are much like the old Denver Broncos running back system for much of the 90's and 2000's under Shanahans control, meaning you can plug in any half decent player and the team and offensive style of play will produce results every single time. Nate has the full backing of a team and a front office who buy into his style of team play, slow calculated high percentage offense and as of recently, a renowned love/respect on the defensive side of the ball. The Blazers don't run a lot of isolation, it's a lot of non-iso, drive, pass out if it's not there, make the defense collapse and get that high FG% shot off. As long as Nate continues to have this team buying into this philosophy, were going to be able to continue to get away with putting less then optimum players in the game and still win.
Help is on the horizon too. There's nothing we can do about Oden being gone, but this team is used to it, and luckily is not reliant on him to make it to the playoffs. a front court of Camby/Pryzbilla and Aldridge/Cunningham is not bad by a long shot, it's actually rather good. Brandon Roy unfortunately will be a worry all year long, but he's not done. He's going to be a good player for us, he's going to start, he's going to have good and bad games just like anyone else, but the good will still far outweigh the bad. It's not like the meniscus disappeared last week, playing in pain isn't something new for Brandon. But boy does Wesley Mathews sure look really good out there? Wesley could start at SG for a lot of other teams, so he's certainly not the one holding us back. He's not the offensive star as Roy is, but where he makes up for that is his aggression, and far superior defense. Couple that with Nic at SF, and Andre continuing to be able to be the teams penetration when called upon, as well as feeding LMA and crew down low is still lookin dirty.
Is this an optimistic outlook? Hell yes it is. There are question marks for every single team not named the Lakers in this league, and we are no different. Watching this new team grow the last 3-4 years has shown me that they can overcome obstacles, and that the "team game" of basketball still does exist in a game dominated by superstars today. Will injuries happen still? Most likely, but the law of averages suggest that these freak injuries have to stop occurring at this ridiculous rate sometime. We do not have a team full of injury prone players. The only explanation I can come up with is this has just been a medical sports anomaly. It just can't keep happening, no medical staff is incompetent and putting these players in jeopardy. Times will get better.
Look on the bright-side guys, we don't have many players who are regressing/getting worse, the Blazers are still loaded with unseen potential and talent.

Last year's team vastly overachieved to get to fifty
This year’s team doesn’t feel as cohesive and at least last year Roy played in 65 games or so at a high level. We might get that many games out of our best player, but I think his best days are probably in the rear view mirror.
I don't think last years team really overachieved
Regardless of how we few the Blazers they have had a massive amount of talent over the past 3 years this year included. So many different players can threaten on any given night.
yes, but
that was before Wesley Matthews put a Blazer jersey on.
Fabricio Oberto and Ryan Gomes: Blazer Legends
and player improvement
Aldridge, Batum, Rudy are all playing better this year. Plus we have Armon who is vastly superior to that Bayless guy.
go blazers!
Bayless 2009-2010 per = 14.3
Johnson so far this year = 12.1
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
PER doesn't say much, especially when it's that close.
They rebound about the same, Johnson gets more assists and (Even as a Bayless supporter) he is a clearly better playmaker, he’s a more efficient scorer, but he has far more turnovers.
So vastly superior is definitely an exaggeration, but if Johnson keeps up his play and reduces his turnovers, he’ll start to look like a clear upgrade, and a better fit.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
that was in response to "vastly superior" (not.even.)
I’m content with AJ as a backup PG to Miller, but I’m also concerned that Cho bailed too early on Bayless because of the spotty health records of Roy and Rudy. The Blazers have already missed Jerryd’s scoring off the bench during several losses, early this season

i would have to disagree
i feel the team was coming together nicely before we hit our little bumps, this season anyway. of course, i have had more education since last season so maybe it’s just my abilities to see it better. however, miller seems to be doing well with setting up and the guys seem to be responding well. when they are on their game it just feels more effortless this season.

Yeah this team will continue to overachieve
but overachieving just to make the playoffs is not what most blazer fans had in mind. We were one of about ten teams that had THAT GUY who could take them to the next level and Another THAT GUY who could dominate the middle. Now it is a FACT that neither of THOSE GUYS are going to be able to be THAT GUY. We still have a lot of good players, but no team in this league tastes real success without THAT GUY.
What me worry ?
that little Mad Magazine guy actually had it right. Sports is for FUN, not worry.
I have a really hard time predicting this year, because a few more games like we had with the Thunder could make the difference. So close but so far. I really don’t know, but that, in itsself is interesting. You just have to see.
If Oden does not give up on the Blazers, we should not give up on him.
I'm actually enjoying the games more. Now that we are just a good team, where no more isos and pressure to win. When
we lose it doesn’t bother me as much because I can see everyone is involved and invested.
Samesies for me. The pressure to win to get playoff seeding isn't elevating my blood pressure anymore.

I am still steaming mad that we blew the game against Utah, though.
I just hate seeing us lose games that we should have won. Both OKC games come to mind, as well.

I think we can be as good as we were last year.
I enjoy watching this team play basketball and will continue to cheer for them and believe in them.

ummm?
The Blazers don’t run a lot of isolation
maybe I read this wrong, but if you really believe this, then I must disagree. With Roy in the lineup the Blazers are about 80% iso basketball, with him out they are about 50% iso basketball. Miller will iso his man at the top of the key or on the block, LaMarcus will iso his man on the block or 15 feet out, and Matthews will iso off the wing from time to time in place of Roy. There is not a “lot” of movement in the Blazers offense normally, without Roy there has been more, and I hope that when Roy comes back they keep it up, but I don’t have much faith in Nate to make that happen.
I am both optimistic and pessimistic about this team, I have hope that Roy will return, that Oden will return, and that the Coach will either learn from his mistakes or be replaced by a better coach when one becomes available. But my that is all watered down by the thoughts that Nate hasn’t proven that he can take a very talented roster and mold the players into a dominate team, and that Roy will still want the ball and a 1-4 play called to end the game eventhough he can’t break his man down and get to the paint anymore.

I think he meant
that this year they have not been running a lot of ISO because of Brandons health. At least that s the way i read it.

I like optimism
This team is still chock full of talent. Now the younger folks will have a bit more time to develop that talent.
Let’s Go Blazers!!!

As much as it pains me to do so...
… we might as well again think of all these injuries as a positive, as it will allow the young players to develop more. THEN, we can attack in 2011-2012 with a much better bench. Stick that with a hopefully healthier Roy, strong and improved Nico and Aldridge, and….(drumroll, please)…. Mr. Greg Oden. We’re talking domination here.
But I swear, if we have to “develop” again next year, I’m getting a knife and stabbing my eyeballs out. Then I’ll just tear up my body. This also applies if Oden won’t make it with us next year.
I voted for same...
but I wanna say, that we’ll be AROUND the same. 45 wins AT LEAST.
It's still a fun game to watch. The team is good enough to win its share and compete almost every night.
They are decent guys and the RG is a great place to visit. What’s not to like?
Sure, we didn’t get out big christmas present we promised ourselves. Life is still good.

I voted "yes" because there are just that many
bad teams to beat.
Treat people well because Karma can hit you at any second.
Haven't you been repeating this mantra for two years straight?
The Leeroy Rule: being insistent >>>> being correct
I don't think it was him
but yeah, we’ve heard this and in the past I think everyone who said it was right.
The difference is that our star player may have his best days behind him. His style of attack is no longer as viable and because of this we’re missing a key ingredient.
This time it’s different. I simply don’t see anyone with the skill to step up to replace what we’ve lost with Roy.
"The game was delayed for over 15 minutes with 5:07 left in the second quarter after France's Nicolas Batum, who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers, dunked and twisted the rim. Volunteers and officials scrambled to put a new rim on the basket and reattach a net."
