10/8 Positive Energy Junk
So the huge news for tonight is obviously Jeff Pendergraph hurting his knee against the Jazz. Let's keep thoughts of his speedy recovery in our heads as we junk today. Hopefully we will know more about the nature of his injury as today goes on.
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts. Its purpose was simple from its infancy; a place where people could come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts. We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club... and people have really become a family here.
So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. Everyone else is doing the same, so you will find the JD an eclectic place where you might read something interesting, pointless, profound, or just funny within a few moments. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:
- Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized.
- Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated
- Remember everything you write is visible publicly
- Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
As you try and navigate through the junk drawer, remember that you can use 'Z' on your keypad to mark a comment as read and move to the next one and hitting shift-A will mark all comments as read.

It wouldn't bother me so much if Dino Rossi finally broke through the glass ceiling and ousted ...
U.S. Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) — since I dislike both, yet don’t hate either one — however, I’ll be mad if reactionary ultraconservative John Koster supplants center-left Congressman Rick Larsen (D-WA) from his seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. That, of course, has less to do with my apathy toward Larsen — who’s just a rank-and-file Democrat, with his hook around here being his support locally for Boeing and national backing by the AFL-CIO that appeals to blue-collar workers — rather, it has more to do with my absolute contempt toward Koster, who’s a far-right, close-minded wingnut regarding cultural issues.

It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
Well, the U.S. Senate race in Washington doesn't scare me; that's 'cause Dino Rossi is ...
just another bland center-right, pro-corporatist neoconservative — with Congressman Dave Reichert (R-WA) being a good comparison — and is unlikely to do any real harm if elected to national office. Instead, my fear has to do with how well extremist right-winger John Koster is polling in the 2nd Congressional District up in my neck of the woods.
As it stands, Koster is running on a culturally hidebound, socially retrogressive platfrom that mirrors the far-right Tea Party movement. Heck, that should only work in this state over at the hinterland of Eastern Washington — which includes the 4th and 5th Congressional Districts — instead of the moderate 2nd Congressional District that ranges from Bellingham down to Everett.

That almost helps even more!
Especially this part:
Several have reported that the immoral communication with a minor statute exists and places the age of consent at 18 due to the inability to “communicate” to 16- and 17-year-olds about sexual activity. These reports have been alarming in nature, however they are completely anecdotal, and perhaps even urban legend. The Washington Court of Appeals, Division 1 decided in the case of State v. Danforth, 56 Wn. App. 133, 782 P.2d 1091 (1989) that such communication has to be for the purposes of committing an illegal act under RCW Chapter 9.68A. Danforth’s conviction was overturned by that ruling. However, the Washington Supreme Court in the case of State v. McNallie, 120 Wn.2d 925, 846 P.2d 1358 (1993) overturned the scope of the Danforth ruling (though not the result; Danforth would have still had his conviction overturned under the McNallie standard), applying the communication statute to encompass all sexual misconduct with a minor, not just those under RCW Chapter 9.68A, which deal mostly with illegal child pornography and prostitution.
i’mma make note of this precedent.
spes est dum anima est
hmm
Colorado’s “close in age” exception is for people within 10 years of each other! How is a 25 year old boning a 15 year old any less pervy than a 28 year old and a 16 year old?
These seem entirely comparable.
I personally don’t understand how age of consent can be younger than adulthood. What exactly does it mean for us to say that we are okay with calling someone an adult for the purposes of having sex but not for voting, joining the military, leaving home without emancipation, etc.?

Why not get a bachelors in nursing? Certainly a minor in Spanish would be helpful there. And you could teach with just a minor, too.

So true about degree often not having anything to do with your work after college.
Provost at WWU spoke with us parents at freshman orientation. He emphasized that parents shouldn’t get worked up over whatever major their kids chose, or change to/from….because they will all be working in some form of information technology within 5 years anyway. It got a laugh….but it is amazingly semi-accurate.

sometimes true.
And yet:
BA in chemistry: did 2 years lab work at a biotech company. Then went to school to get:
MS in Environmental Health: worked 7 years at the EPA. Then went to school to get:
post-bac in accounting: on third year as budget analyst.
So, it depends.
Sure it happens sometimes
But I have been in a common situation where I had actual experience in the field I was applying to….but was passed over for the position in favor of someone who had a degree…when I inquired what the degree was in…I was told it was Art History. I was going for a Training position in a telecommunications company. Huh?
Harry Bosch: "Everybody counts....or nobody counts."
i think a lot of companies just like to see a degree, no matter what. i heard once that this is because they think a degree is a sign that someone is responsible or something. pretty dumb, in my opinion.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
Ridiculous if you ask me...it is one thing if it is somewhat related to to the task at hand
but otherwise it sounds like discrimination to me
Harry Bosch: "Everybody counts....or nobody counts."
i agree.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
I was working somewhere that posted an open position requiring a degree (not specified)
I inquired what the degree was supposed to be in….the answer was “Oh…anything” ….I was pissed. I think the next time (if I am otherwise qualified) I am hiring a lawyer
Harry Bosch: "Everybody counts....or nobody counts."
wow….
did it even specify what kind of degree? like BA or BS?
maybe it’d be worth it to get some weird degree that would be sorta cheap to say you have one.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
They may specified BA or BS...I don't remember...but still shouldn't matter much
maybe it’d be worth it to get some weird degree that would be sorta cheap to say you have one.
I have thought about that ….but I hate spending a bunch of money on something so pointless. When I need to learn something… I go out and learn it….then apply it.
Harry Bosch: "Everybody counts....or nobody counts."
Requiring a degree isn't that uncommon.
Some companies like to require a degree because they feel it shows the applicant has completed a major project that requires time and dedication. I’ve heard some different reasons over the years.
Whether it’s fair or not is a different story.
I do know of some places who state they require a degree, but in reality will call someone if their resume shows enough working experience to nullify the questions about their ability to complete projects.
The problem with this ,,,,,
I do know of some places who state they require a degree, but in reality will call someone if their resume shows enough working experience to nullify the questions about their ability to complete projects.
….is that I will rarely apply to these….because I don’t meet their so called minimum requirements
Harry Bosch: "Everybody counts....or nobody counts."
It's a popular practice to apply if you're simply close to the requirements
Just explain why you’d be a good fit despite being short on a requirement or two, in the cover letter.
Businesses can be very bad about listing “minimum requirements” they know they’re not likely to meet. I think it’s because it’s such a popular practice for people to apply anyway, businesses are numb to the concept of concrete minimum requirements. All this said, some businesses take their minimum requirements VERY seriously, especially with the current job market.
Besides, what’s the worst thing they’ll do? Not call you back? There’s no “application cops” or anything. They usually won’t mind if you’re close to the requirements and give it a shot.
Your mileage may vary of course.
It is still aggravating
and I do still apply if all else is perfect….but I do get tired of all those “Thanks, but No Thanks” emails that they send out now-a-days. Add to that all the scam jobs, insurance jobs and straight commission jobs, and this job hunt sucks
Harry Bosch: "Everybody counts....or nobody counts."
Japanese major, applied linguistics minor. I don’t jack diddly about either of those subjects, largely because PSU isn’t a very good school, but also because I suck at studying/keeping up with things.
Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
I always found the whole major/minor in US universities
a bit strange, in the sense you can end up with wholly different subjects. I mean, here you can also enroll in optional subjects unrelated to what you’re studying, but in a much lower proportion.
It's a cool system
I like how easy it is to become a “sub-specialist” in another subject.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
yeah, but what’s the usefulness of, for example, being a psychology minor if you’re working as an engineer? Wouldn’t it be better to do more engineering subjects? i’m not saying it’s better or worse, and in fact, the ability of choosing whatever you want is certainly interesting. It’s just, i don’t see the practical side of it from an employer point of view, i guess.
Usually you can't take more classes in your major than you do to graduate
A minor just means you’re spending extra time in school or using all your elective credits in the same field. A lot of minors end up being semi-related, such as engineering majors getting math minors since they need so many math classes to graduate anyway
#5
It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
That's just how are liberal arts system is set up
Roughly 1/3 of credits come from the major, 1/3 from general ed, leaving about 1/3 for whatever one wants. Of course, it varies from program to program.
The reality is if the subject needs much more depth, you’re going to have to get a masters degree.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
ah, ok. So you’re not taking from one to study the other, pretty much you’re “forced” to take a minor anyway, then?
Not forced
Those extra credits are electives. They can all be in one area, which usually leads to a minor, or they can be all spread out. They can also be used for fluff classes. I took “classes” in Ultimate Frisbee and weight lifting. I also taught for-credit classes in rock climbing, mountaineering, and winter camping.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
I took yoga for credit
So much cheaper than going through a studio, and it was for credit!

British BA degree in media studies with a kind of minor in computer science, will have a US business degree in a while. Or a long while.
If I could do it again, I would want to have any kind of student advisor and a principal worth their salt in high school to discuss with me what I really could have done with a pretty great GPA and recommend me some schools and courses of study.

I wasn’t WOWED by it, it was a fun standard movie.
I also didn’t notice an abundance of helicopter shots, or more than is justifiable. I feel like I’ve seen people complain about that. It was odd that there were no helicopters chasing them; that is the first thing that happens I’d think.
Overall, it was fun. Nothing to get really worked up over. I liked it.

As Pendergraph gets hurt. We claw back and tie it just before halftime but Ronnie Price makes a 3 at the buzzer to give Utah the lead. Our starting backcourt plays horribly but their backups play as well as they did poorly. Sloan plays his bench the majority of the 2nd half, including crunch time, Nate plays starters primarily, Sloan’s scrubs hold on. Matthews leads team in minutes, points, shots, and free throws. Dante goes for 18 and 10 but 5 TOs, some of them pretty bad. We ran ran ran, even off made baskets, and it sounded like it was at Nate’s bidding

Modern Family is really funny
I want to read books all day every day
I’m so tired that my eyes hurt and I look like I haven’t slept in months
I hope to someday stop feeling like the worst person in the world
going to plays for class is going to be really fun and the one I saw tonight was pretty heartbreaking
i want a new tattoo
all you people are my homies and I’m happy to know you over the internet, and some of you in real life
I’m excited that Rudy is playing well. It makes me feel a little happier to still have his jersey
I hope Pendy gets well soon so we don’t have to cut another roster spot for a back up back up back up center.
I’ll shut up now
Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
Good ideas, sir
I’m glad to know you too, homes. Any ideas for your next tattoo?

Wow
If I was gonna get a bridge of Portland I’d go with either the Freemont or the St. John’s… something iconic and recognizable
Blazers win!
the Hawthorne is very iconic, very recognizable, my favorite bridge, and the bridge I use the most often by a longshot. It’s been my primary method of entering downtown Portland for most my life, whether it was on the bus or bicycle, and since I’ll be leaving Portland but it will remain my favorite city, I want something to represent it. (the two bridges you listed are cool as well, but I never use them so they don’t have the same meaning that the Hawthorne does).
Go Blazers! Secure the Win!

I can easily argue against this
McMillan admitted that Matthews’ play has changed the way he views the team’s rotation. Suddenly, Matthews has played his way into the same conversation as Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Andre Miller in terms of getting big minutes. And really, nobody can argue against it.
Nicolas Batum is still better.

which is why Nicolas should be getting 35 minutes a night and Matthews should be getting whatever’s left. Matthews hasn’t “played his way into the conversation” with the top three guys, he’s still the first guy off the bench (second when Oden comes back and that goes to Camby).

the track record says Nic will have the shortest leash of any of the starters. I hope that’s not the case this year, but we shall see.
That's becuse it made sense in the past but not this season
It doesn’t matter though. Nate could train the defense to hold teams to 20 points a game and have every point on offense come off a fast break and fans will still blame Nate for the lack of offense rebounds and the lack of development of a 2nd round rookie.
It’s not different than people calling for Jay Jensen to be fired when a player gets injured. The trainers have no way to control player’s bodies during a game.

"lack of offense rebounds"
Huh?
That’s like the team’s best quality, as it was tied for 4th in ORB% last season.
Though, to be honest, offensive rebounding isn’t affected much by a coach, as that’s on the players themselves.
“lack of development of a 2nd round rookie”
Last season, Dante Cunningham and Jeff Pendergraph did what most people expected out of them. Upon entering the NBA, they were both refined, yet just so-so role players with little upside. If anything, many folks were mad at Kevin Pritchard and co. — rather than Nate McMillan — for passing on DeJuan Blair, who proved his worth for San Antonio.

If all the teams points came from fast breaks there would probably no offensive boards to grab.

Nate likes Nic and watched him play in Europe. Miller and Rudy will lose more playing time to Mathews than Nic will. It’s not like Babbitt is going to take his minutes.

Just don't put everyone who dislikes Nate McMillan ...
into the same category, for that spectrum ranges a wide amount from the likes of, oh, Visionary2 on one end of it all the way to myself on the other side.
Heck, I’m one of the few people here — or, perhaps, the proverbial lone wolf — who’d be grinning from ear to ear if Portland installed an even more down-tempo offense, which could be accomplished by hiring Mike Fratello.
Notwithstanding Fratello, Jeff Van Gundy — who’s also a slow-paced, defensive-minded coach — would be my first choice, but I don’t envision him working on the West Coast in Portland for a meddling owner like Paul Allen.

About plane crashes, here's a movie idea.
“On October 1st, 2010, the Seattle Mariners take on the Oakland Athletics in a one-game playoff to determine the AL Western Division winner.
After a grueling contest, the M’s score three runs on a bases clearing double in the top of the tenth inning to take a 6-3 lead. From there, the M’s shut down to A’s in the bottom half and head out of McAfee Coliseum the divisional champs.
The team happily celebrates its victory in the clubhouse and, subsequently thereafter, gets ready for the airplane ride home. It’s on that charter flight where tragedy strikes, however, as the team plane crashes due to an engine failure [or something].
There are no survivors.
At that point, the Commissioner’s office contemplates canceling the M’s season and, in turn, replacing the devastated franchise with the A’s. Yet, after an outcry of fan support and through the ownership’s request, the M’s will continue their season in honor of the fallen players.
As replacements for the deceased, a group of 25 minor league players will take their place on the diamond for the upcoming playoffs.
From that point onward, the ragtag group of unproven prospects and a few over-the-hill veterans manage to defeate (sic) some of the best teams on their way to an unexpected World Series Championship.
It’d be the greatest story of trials, tribulations, adversity, and success in the history of sports. Anyway, that’s just an outline of my crazy idea, but it’s still an innovative plot."

I want him to play enough to get 1000 points
Per 40, Hollinger has him penciled in for about 1400. It would be good if they could finally make him a starter after they have already cleaned up the rotation on SF. Matthews can close out games as needed.
P.S.: When I said before training camp began that Matthews could maybe become a starter because Nate will love what he does people were incredulous.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
would much rather see
a roy-wes-nic-la-go lineup to close out.
you just can’t leave a two-way player like nic on the bench to finish games.
PHILLY!
I’m reasonably certain the Matthews-Batum-Roy lineup is going nowhere. There’s just not enough ballhandling out there. Blake’s a better ballhandler than Matthews or Batum, and teams just ate us up with the press when he finished games.
How about a Miller-Roy-Matthews-Batum-Aldridge lineup while we have no centers ;)
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
We are really going to find out some things about this team. Doesn’t it seem like Oden’s started running about five times during his rehab?
Reminds me of Kidd-Terry/Barea/Beaubois-Butler-Marion-Nowitzki
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
the only problem with our lineup
is the lack of rebounding.
butler and marion are both great rebounders. la and nic—- not so much.
PHILLY!
Weren't there lineups with Jason Kidd guarding ...
3s alongside a small backcourt of Jason Terry and either J.J. Barea or Roddy Beaubois?
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Yeah, they played some very small lineups
Every lineup with Barea is small, but they make that work better than defending an elite wing like Kobe where they always struggled even with Howard or Butler or Marion on him.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
As much as I'd enjoy Andre Iguodala on ...
the Portland Trail Blazers, my feeling is that he’d put the Dallas Mavericks over the top if acquired for Caron Butler, a prospect such as Dominique Jones, and a 2011 first-round draft pick.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
I believe the Philadelphia 76ers will have ...
another subpar season this year, which may lead to Andre Iguodala getting shipped out at or around the trade deadline.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
For better or worse, I bet that lineup will rear its head.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
blake was a one trick pony
he was like a steve kerr who didn’t shoot all that well. nic and wes are far more versatile talents.
PHILLY!
Blake has better handles. It’s already been shown that Roy is poor bringing the ball up the court under pressure. Will Matthews and Batum be better than him?
disagree about roy's ability to handle pressure
and for a few possessions to close out games (especially when the ball will be advanced to half court a lot of the times), there is adequate ball handling.
PHILLY!
I'm sure Nate sees all the stats on Nic
And Nic passes Nate’s eye test. And Nate loves defense. I’m not really worried about Nic at all. I just want him in the game when it matters most.
It seems like last year, that the only person who was willing to criticize Nic was the coaches. Monty said sometimes Nic’s head wasn’t in the game and Nic agreed. I think he’ll be more focused this year.
To me, last year Nic was either thinking offense of defense and not both. Not a 100% of the time, but often enough. I have a feeling he’ll have that fixed this year.

It wasn't poor focus, but rather a lack of aggression.
http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Nicolas-Batum-537/
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Brandon Roy is lazy on defense at times, but ...
that just isn’t the same as Nicolas Batum being naturally unassertive out on the court.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
I could see something like a 28 to 20 split in minutes for Nicolas ...
Batum and Wesley Matthews this season, so it’d be interesting to see how things play out with people who are high on both guys. I’m still low on Matthews and have tempered expectations for Batum, which places me in an extremely small minority.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
ya it's weird
his minutes last year were all over the place even though his production was really consistent. I guess I understand giving Webster a shot, but Batum was just plain better and deserved to be getting about 32 mpg the whole time. And there’s no real pattern in the minutes either—it just bounces back and between 17-24-36. Well, hopefully it’ll be better this year.
I think part of it
Nate knew Nic would play the same and not complain no matter how many/few minutes he got, where Martell/Rudy/Bayless needed a certain number to be productie/happy. Hopefully this year it will be less about politics and more about performance since all our players are a year older and more mature
#5
It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
I agree, but it's apples and oranges
Nate just listed 3 players who deserve big minutes. I don’t think by excluding Nic from that list, he was saying Mathews is better than Nic or that he deserves more minutes than Nic. He just lumped Mathews in with 3 guys who get big minutes.
The name's tominhawaii, but everybody calls me LukeBabbittFTW. Any of you guys call me tominhawaii, and I'll kill you. And I don't like nobody replying to my comments. Oh, and on an injury vampire note, I’d like to see Bayless get a bigger chunk of minutes if Miller is suffering and playing himself into shape as it appears he’s doing.
I sort of agree
I want the best players out there even if that means Miller.
I think of all the players to lose playing time to Mathews, Miller will lose the most.

No apparently it was Keith Bogans. Who graciously was willing to get posterized in a situation where he had almost no chance to prevent a basket. Two fairly small guys by NBA standards, but still looks nice.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Not much else Keith Bogans could do there while rotating back quickly on defense, although ...
that sure was an ugly turnover by him to start the play.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
We love you D.J. Augustin. No, really.
“That’s Larry,” Jordan said. “If you know Larry, Larry wants to always [have] the highest. He would love to get a marquee point guard as we would all, but I mean, as of right now we have a point guard and we have to support him until things change.”
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Matthews was leading all Blazers in assists last night (5, as many as D-Will), while Dante had the most turnovers with 5 which is unusual for him
Maybe he tried to do more in motion things, when last year he was the least turnover prone PF in the league thanks to only doing spot up shooting.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
here's a minutes rotation that i would love to see in the start of the season
dre (25) / bayless (15)/ roy(8)
roy (24)/ rudy (20)/ wes(4)
batum (28)/ wes(20)
aldridge (30)/ dante(15)/ batum(3)
camby (30)/ aldridge (8)/ (CENTER) (10)
then when GO and Joel return, i would like to see camby take up the 18mpg behind LA, and GO and joel to split the C mins (until oden is ready to handle more).
PHILLY!

Won't happen. On the 95-96 Bulls Jordan and Pippen had to play a lot of minutes, and Longley and Kukoc both had 26.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
That's why it was a hypothetical

If Gregg Popovich can get Donnie Walsh to trade him Wilson Chandler for a 2011 first-round draft pick ...
and salary filler (i.e., Alonzo Gee, Garrett Temple, and Curtis Jerrells), then the team would be set.
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=2f4rnkm
C: Tim Duncan (32 m.p.g.)
C: Tiago Splitter (16 m.p.g.)
PF: Matt Bonner (16 m.p.g.)
PF: DeJuan Blair (16 m.p.g.)
PF: Antonio McDyess (16 m.p.g.)
SF: Richard Jefferson (28 m.p.g.)
SF: Wilson Chandler (20 m.p.g.)
SF: Bobby Simmons (Inactive)
SG: Manu Ginobili (28 m.p.g.)
SG: James Anderson (12 m.p.g.)
SG: Gary Neal (D-League)
PG: Tony Parker (28 m.p.g.)

If Popovich can’t pry Chandler away from the New York Knicks, then I assume Simmons will get the backup small forward minutes and Kirk Penney will make the squad.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)

would benefit somewhat if someone like Antonio McDyess was out for a bit due to an injury.

Favre pulls an Oden?
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/07/brett-favres-answers-ques_n_754876.html
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was asked about the naked pictures he allegedly sent to 26-year-old Jenn Sterger.
“No. I’m not getting into that. I got my hands full with the Jets,” the 41-year-old said at a press conference on Thursday. “And trying to get some timing down with our guys so that’s all I am going to discuss.”
According to the report on Deadspin, Favre contacted Sterger via MySpace when he was on the New York Jets and began leaving her voicemails. When Sterger declined, Favre reportedly sent her multiple pictures of his penis. Scroll down to watch the video.

It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
For me or him?
He seems to have no real reason, he ate and stuff. I was hung over in a super crowded stuffy sports bar, hadn’t eaten much all day. Had spent the last hour walking around in the heat with no water. Was trying to play catchup with 2 water cups but I was too far behind. Started to feel uncomfortable and tried to make it outside, but a step or 2 away from the door my vision went black, so I stopped, then everything went white and my ears started buzzing. Suddenly my legs went out from under me and I was on the ground. I got kicked out of the bar (which was lame since I hadn’t been drinking) but got some pizza and drank more water and felt fine after.

I’ll become lightheaded, I’ll start to hear my heartbeat inside my head, it’ll become a little harder to breath, and I’ll feel like I’m about to fall. Normally sitting down and taking deep breathes fill fix that.
It's super weird up here with the girl that died.
One of my friends was close to her circle of friends, and everyone is stunned. It makes no sense. Where she died makes no sense either. They’re calling it suicide, but everyone’s hyper-suspicious.

it was a cold august morning; GB like all those before him, awoke to the morning as a man stretches towards the furrows of a dapple dawn, drawn by a carriage of nymphs. at an instant, he knew of only one recourse for the day—flip flops and the drugs. by noon, the beast had taken hold. when we found him in the happiest of hours that afternoon, he could only be described as an unreal mix of ravenous and blissful. he was like a savage dog, frothing at the gum that had stumbled upon a land of little magical peoples. the flood gates of drool were forever release. we like noah before us, took haste w/ wood and prayer to combat the coming dooms.

Ouch. Good luck to Pendy. But probably Cho will have to waive him, or make a 2 for 1 or nothing trade.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Perhaps he knows Dampier is gone when he said that
Honestly though, I was surprised at Rich’s response, unless he knows something we don’t. Douglast made an argument on the front page that Portland has a month of playing few major big men, and could get by, but I’m still concerned that we’re relying on only a regularly-injured center right now.
Maybe Prz and Oden
are closer to being back than has been suspected. If one of them are good for 20m a game and Camby is healthy for the opener, maybe no moves necessary? Seems unlikely.
if he has another plan up his sleeve that’d be good.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
Erick Dampier does not appear to be an option for the Blazers as Cho says it appears he is close to signing with another team
Quick tweet (don’t kill me).
How Cho has handled rumors has been surprising, I’d even say tactless sometimes, but then again I don’t know what he knows.
have you ever thought about thinking about the way he approaches his thinking and thought process?

by EvilKaramazov on Oct 8, 2010 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh so Cho definitely knew about Dampier's status, thanks for correcting that. I didn't realize that
I do wonder if we legitimately had a shot at Damp last week.
i’m wondering if the Blazers could still make an offer that would lure Dampier over here.
or if the Blazers just don’t want to…….
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
There may be better spots available for him
Better pay and/or guaranteed playing time (instead of “you’ll go the bench by mid-Winter”
that could very well be.
i’d just be curious to know if he’s not an option because he doesn’t want to sign here or if the Blazers don’t want him at all.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
he said he wanted to sign here last week
But I don’t think we made him feel wanted, didn’t express the slightest bit of interest til pendergraph got hurt
#5
It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
maybe I'm crazy here
but I think the best option would be to get a D-league big in the interim, since Joel and Greg shouldn’t be absent too long in the season, and then you avoid the issue of Dampier sitting on the bench for five months.
but we don’t really have any idea what we’ll get from Greg or Joel. and Greg isn’t exactly a safe bet……
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
I think it's silly to point out of Joel and Greg
that Greg is the unreliable one. Neither one is reliable.
I think we overstate Camby’s injury concerns. Big men generally get hurt, it happens. He’s probably a little above-average ish in terms of missing games, but it’s nothing awful.
Maybe Cho’s data says Dampier is awful and sucks? We assume that he’s a good backup center, but Cho might see a D-league big as an adequate replacement. I dunno.
we can only give BAE, which is likely what any other team would give him
We can’t just offer more money.

I'm a subject line so people can minimize this image if they don't want to see it
so you want to be careful about posting images straight up; in those cases provide a subject line like above ↑ just in case the pic is huge or people are irritated by it. you can also post smaller pics especially when you use flickr and do the ‘see all sizes’ like so:

or you can straight up just link that page, like so:

Ugh I wish they'd actually include the original charges in this situation
Typically it’ll get amended later to the original charge, like disturbing the peace or whatever. Odds are, they’ll drop the whole thing though…
So I asked this on the front page, but I'll check in here too
If Portland cuts Jeff, do they still take care of his rehab since he got injured while playing for the team? Or is he on his own after that?
i would think he’d get taken care of… as some kind of on job injury…

oh, dude, that would be really sad and reallllly messed up if we just ditched him. Jeff’s a good kid, not a good player, especially for this team, bu he’s a good guy and I’d be mad at the team if they left him out in the rain.

they kinda have to don’t they? I mean we need the roster spot, and Pendy can’t play for the year… and he’s not guaranteed (correct me if I’m wrong here)… Pattie is already gonna get cut too… so unless Cho pulls an unbalanced trade out of his butt, I don’t know what other options exist…
.
That said, I would expect that the Blazers and insurance would cover him for the year
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
I’m fine with cutting him if we have to, but I really hope that Blazers insurance covers him for the year of recovery and crap from the injury he suffered playing for the team. I never expected Jeff to be a long term option on this team.
Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
I imagine they would find a way to keep him around in some capacity since he’s a big locker room guy… I’m sure there’s a way for him work for the team while not being a eligible player for the team
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old

Even without Patty being signed, we have 15 players under contract
To add a player, we need to cut a player of the 15 fully signed players (of which Armon is the last one). Patty was basically playing here, hoping they’d have a roster opening later, which just took a hit last night.
Our alternatives are to trade a player like Armon for future draft picks, or do a lopsided trade, like a 2 for 1. Those are the only ways we’d gain a roster spot to sign another player, with or without Patty.
Except for the D-League
We can only leave someone off our roster and stick them in our D-League apparently.
spes est dum anima est
Not quite
If a player is under contract in year 1 or 2 and gets assigned to the DL, he still takes up a roster spot. If a player gets waived an goes to the d-league (instead of e.g. to Europe), ANY team can call him up.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
So if Patty goes to play in the D-League
Without us signing him to the roster than he is just another d-leaguer and we have just as much pull to call him up as any team does?
spes est dum anima est
Yup
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
But Patty won't go to the D-League. He'll go to the Hornets, another NBA team, or Rome.
Sykes & Co might go to the DL for Idaho
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
His contract is guaranteed, and even if it wasn't the injury would guarantee it for this year.
Similar to Patty last year with his summer league contract, or Miami and Orlando having to pay for injured players. I’m not sure if players pay rehab out of their own salary (don’t think so) or out of some team budget or out of some league budget, but somehow he’ll get his surgery and rehab bills paid.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
when did his contract get guaranteed? I must have missed that
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
Pendy's contract for this year (around 760k) is fully guaranteed
Pendy’s contract for next year would only get guaranteed if he played in 41 games this year, and doesn’t get waived before the end of the season.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
hmmm… for some reason i thought only his first year was guaranteed
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
Originally it was. But he had options to make it guaranteed via the number of games, via playoff games, or via just not getting waived. I think any and all of those conditions happened.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Yeah. But for next year he's probably screwed
41 games is highly unlikely with an ACL tear, and the chance that at some point this year the Blazers need that roster spot for an injury replacement is now very likely.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
that's fine... if he can't earn a spot in camp by his third season, then he wasn't a viable option anyways
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
I was sure the players don't pay for rehab if they're currently on the roster
I just wasn’t so sure the team payed for rehab if they were no longer part of the roster. So more specifically, I wasn’t sure if they were still on the hook for his rehab, purely because the team is still paying him a salary without having him on the roster.

I just saw all the bad calls by the umps on PTI last night. Wow, the MLB playoffs look awful
Every game’s score was affected by poor calls. That’s a terrible day for MLB.
no one scored directly because of blown calls. the blown calls just gave the teams in question another opportunity to score and their opponents another opportunity to prevent them from scoring.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
(i’m not on the instant replay bandwagon)
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
It's like saying it's the '72 US Olympic Basketball team's fault.
I mean, they still had another chance to win the game after the ref gave the other team extra chances, and they failed, so why are we blaming the officials?
I've been resisting making a comment in general about how much people are non-plussed about bad calls today.
i’m just sorta sick of hearing about and complaining about officiating.
i did see a story today, though, that the mlb players union is gonna meet with the umpires and league officials.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
I won't be upset about officiating complaints until leagues make an effort to make officiating transparent.
Which is one of the things MLB players want, so I can at least appreciate their attempt.
sure, transparency is good. and there is probably a better chance of that in MLB than in NBA.
but the umpiring in baseball, overall, is pretty consistent. there are always blown calls. some of them are bigger blown calls than others. but even after that steal, all the Braves had to do was get one out and there would have been no damage. i think the only difference this year is that the blown calls have been more prominent. Gallaraga’s “perfect” game, Posey’s steal, the check swing that ended up a 3 run homer (for a team that was already ahead and never gave up a run anyway), the strike three that lead to a go ahead double (and balls and strikes will never ever ever be part of instant replay, nor should they).
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
well, basketball is a much harder sport to officiate than baseball, no? The most contentious part is usually balls and strikes, and it’s basically stubborness that keeps them from using a computer to do that.
i would despise a computer being used for balls and strikes.
the human element of the umps is part of why i like baseball.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
in general or baseball specific
I’m relatively sick of people always thinking the refs are biased against their team… but when they make a legitimate mistake, I think it’s fair to call them on it and discuss how it influenced the outcome
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
i agree. i think it’s fair to call them on the mistake and make them accountable.
but i’m not sure about the influencing the game part. that’s what i’m trying to get away from. very very rarely does an officials call directly impact a win or a loss. unless it’s a game winning home run, game winning free throws, or something that happens at the very end of the game where the teams don’t get another chance to win.
i jokingly still blame Bartman for the cubs losing in that NLCS but everyone’s quick to say it’s not his fault and the cubs had their chances and still could have won. it’s not that different for blown umpire calls.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
Right… kinda… maybe…
.
I’m not saying the Officials caused the Twins to lose, but the blown call gave the Yankees a clear advantage by giving them more chances than would otherwise have been given them in the normal course of the game
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
The Twins got the benefit the night before
Final out ruled a hit. They couldn’t capitalize, the Yankees could.

It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
The breaks are the breaks
It’s how you deal with ‘em that matters
Don’t get me wrong, I’m pro-replay, but there’s not replay this year so we gotta live with the calls that are made
#5
It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
that's not the point
I just picked a game at random… point remains that the blown call led to extra opportunities for one team… say the Royals capitalize on 12% of their opportunities in a given game. If a game occurs where there are no blown calls they get 50 opportunities, if an official blows one call, they get 51 opportunities…. which is greater. 12% of 50 or 12% of 51?
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
but i think you might be forgetting that it’s not just the Royals (using your example) who have the extra opportunity. their opponent also has an extra opportunity to get them out.
and, in baseball, it’s far easier to get someone out that it is for the offense to succeed.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
he said the blown call led to extra opportunities for one team. i’m saying it led to opportunities for both teams. and that it’s easier for the defense to make an out than it is for the offense to succeed (get on base)
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
I think its incredibly ludicrous to refer to a blown call in the offense’s failure as an extra opportunity for the defense.
then what is it for the defense? what would you call it if not an opportunity to get another out?
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
I would call it unfairly being forced to get an out when you by all rights should be having an opportunity to score.
you’re gonna get sick of saying that
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
maybe not as long as you think. i rarely have a cogent, reasonable, understandable thought. that much seems obvious.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
yep. i get it. that’s why i said it’s obvious. but i’m through apologizing for the way i think and my opinions. so i’m just gonna roll with it and let people lambast me as they see fit if that’s what they wanna do.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
but the opponent already got them out 3 times in the inning… asking them to get them out a 4th time is adding to the statistical probability that the Royals capitalize on their extra opportunity to score
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
4 out innings happen. and always because of mistakes. either an umpires mistake, or a passed ball or a throwing error or something like that. it’s not like umps are the only reason a team gets extra outs. extra outs in an inning are not really that uncommon.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
passed balls (hee hee) and throwing errors are the offending teams fault though… officiating errors are not. that’s the difference
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
sure.
but an out is an out is an out. and a mistake is a mistake. they happen. it’s how we deal with them that matters.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
am I really debating baseball rules????
not all mistakes are created equally in sports… I make an errant throw that gets by the first baseman, that’s on me… i make a perfect throw and the official blows an obvious call, that’s outside my control and my teams control and should not be part of the game
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
but it is part of the game. whether or not it should be is irrelevant. there’s a lot of stuff that shouldn’t happen. but it just keeps on happening anyway
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
stuff happens sure… but they create rules to govern how this stuff happens all the time… ball bounces over the wall it’s a ground rules double… fan interferes with an outfielder catching the ball, there’s a rule for that… why should the officials operate outside the rules?
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
i don’t see it so much as them operating outside the rules, as in, making a conscious effort to cheat, i see it as they are just making mistakes. and everyone makes mistakes.
this new line of though i’m trying to adopt is gonna really get tested during basketball season.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
so
if a cop pulls you over and says, “hey it looks like you were doing 30 mph over the speed limit, here is a fat ticket.” You’d take that over the cop thinking “hmmm, my gun had that guy going 9 mph over the speed limit. oh well, not worth it.”
yeah.
i’ve had cops tell me what their guidelines for who gets pulled over are. one said he didn’t pull someone over unless it was 12 mph over.
i’ve got tickets for being 10 over on a clear freeway and for being 15 over on a highway and not gotten a ticket for being 15 over on 205 in a construction zone. there’s no rhyme or reason. it’s whatever the cop decides. let them decide. not much i can do about it.
except not speed.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
haha…well, in my mind 10 over wasn’t speeding so that one upset me.
i got a ticket in Sherwood for rolling through a stop sign and i didn’t roll through the stop sign. i had to pay 140 bucks (reduced from 220 i think). it upset me. but fighting it wasn’t gonna do any good. not in this town. so i paid it and now i’m really careful in sherwood because i know the prick cops will pull people over for doing nothing wrong.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
sorry, I screwed up my analogy, let me try again:
if a cop pulls you over and says, "hey it looks like you were doing 30 mph over the speed limit, here is a fat ticket." You’d take that over the cop thinking "hmmm, my gun had that guy going the speed limit…bummer :("
and in the end, i’d still have a ticket i had to pay
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
no, because since you weren’t speeding, and his gun confirmed that, then no ticket, vs the cop using his eyeballs to assume you were speeding.
oh i see. so if the guy didn’t have a gun vs if he did.
yeah, i guess i’d prefer he had a radar gun. but if he didn’t and pulled me over anyway, what’s there to do about it? as i said below, i’ve been pulled over for doing nothing wrong before. and, in the story i said below, even given a ticket for it.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
you argue the ticket, cause without the gun there’s no proof you were speeding
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
indeed. sometimes i wonder what happens in those “my word against the cops” things in city courts.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
depends on the situation… if the cop can’t prove guilt, then you are innocent… or if you can prove innocence…
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
here’s the reason i decided not to fight the stop sign ticket, even though i’m not sure if he had me on camera. if he didn’t, it’s the same situation as this speeding without being on radar scenario:
a woman i work with told me how her son’s girlfriend was pulled over in Sherwood for not stopping at a stop sign for a full 3 seconds. she went to court to fight it. there were several others there also fighting the same ticket. in this instance, i’m not sure if there was cameras in the cop car that recorded them or not. so this seems to be a case where the cop decided it wasn’t long enough of a stop and pulled them over, which seems to lead to a “my word vs the cop’s” scenario.
all those people lost and had to pay. so sometimes in situations with small towns and cops, even if the cop can’t prove guilt, i’m not sure that would matter unless the person can for sure prove beyond a doubt, that they were innocent. which seems like an unlikely occurrence.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
yore right... why even bother to try
I mean what’s the point
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
yes, everyone makes mistakes, but if you have the ability and the time (replay won’t exactly affect the “pace” of a baseball game) why not give the officials the opportunity to correct their big mistakes
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
because i think once they go down that road, it opens the possibility to review everything, and that really would affect the pace of the game.
plus, i really don’t think the problem is any worse now than it’s ever been. if they didn’t do replay after the 1985 world series, i don’t know why they’d start now.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
it’s replay.
they had cameras and monitors in 1985 too. i know because i’ve seen replays of the play from that world series. and they showed tv replays back then as welk. i’d imagine the umps could have watched them then too.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
VHS has come a long way since 1985
I think you are trying to prevent problems that don’t exist… look at the NFL, replay got out of control, they did away with it, then brought it back in a limited manner which works fairly well (ie. they fixed it)… if something adversely affects revenue, they will fix it.
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
probably.
although i think we could all agree (maybe) that the MLB moves at a glacially slow pace to “fix” anything.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
And a win is a win. And a loss is a loss. You’re basically saying If the win was the result of bad umping, well, who cares, the losing team should just face that as another challenge; they have to man up and outplay the other team AND the bad umping.
That’s just weird to me. I want my sporting matches to be between two teams playing a game with a defined set of rules, not a game where a third ‘team’ sways who wins or loses.
they have to man up and outplay the other team AND the bad umping.
yes.
the reason i like sports is because they are a condensed version of life. and, in real life, sometimes we all have to deal with stuff outside our control. the great thing about sports is that, sometimes, those extra obstacles can be overcome. and that’s a beautiful thing.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
Funny.
I like sports because they are unlike life. Because we get (supposedly) a fair playing field, where the rules and the goals are clearly defined, and the team with the athletes that are better at accomplishing those goals will prevail. The purity of the competition is what’s compelling to me. I mean, isn’t this the root of the reason everyone was so up in arms about the steroids scandal? These players decided to cheat! To uneven the playing field! How dare they spoil the sanctity of the game! Right?
full confession:
i got over the steroids thing pretty quick. it didn’t bother me that much. especially if the numbers of guys doing them was what the rumours were….it sorta was an even playing field if nearly everyone is using.
see, to me, what you describe is the ideal of what sports could be and what we want them to be. but that’s not what they are. we get upset when the thing we want to be “fair” and “pure” all of a sudden has elements of real life. the truth is, sports has never been “fair” or “pure”.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
True, most sporting competitions aren’t fair or pure. But that doesn’t change the ideal. And, in my opinion, that means that we shouldn’t strive to make them as close to the ideal as possible.
ay yah.
And, in my opinion, that means that we shouldn’t stop striving to make them as close to the ideal as possible.
at least it got us a little closer to instant replay. Its been bad. Just as bad as last year.
NBA refs>>MLB umps.
Imagine the complaining here if the Giants had actually not been given the advantage on a stolen base call.
what do you mean?
you think people here would have said Posey was safe? i really don’t think that would have happened at all. the Giants fans in here seem a bit too non-homery for that.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
I'm saying people would be more upset at the refs today if the Braves had won due to a bad stolen base call.
yeah, but we’re not all of a sudden refusing to acknowledge bad umpiring. All of us know the Braves got hosed on that call and nobody knows what the result of the game would have been if they’d gotten it right.
ah…i see what you’re saying now.
you may be right.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
I know I'm being a bit mean when I say the statement above.
But when you’re not particularly rooting for either team, it’s noticeable how little people care about a bad call, as long as it only affects your opponent.
It’s a weird form of homerism. (“It stinks, but hey, we won!”)
Sorry I can't finish up this conversation (or perhaps it's best that way?)
but I’m headed out the door now.
I don’t understand why that’s homerism. Homerism is refusing to acknowledge that the other team got hosed. You don’t have to apologize for being happy your team won.
yeah, it’d be awesome if the only indication of a pitch call was like a little light behind the plate. or a computer generated voice.
that would take some getting used too for me— I do have some traditionalist in me— but I know I’d get to the point where I liked it.
the thought of it makes me want to throw up.
i like how little technology there is in baseball. it’s part of why i love the game so much. no clocks, no buzzers, no replay booths, nothing.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
I know it’s a little sad. Sadder still is a game that swings on a rather large amount of human error that isn’t player controlled.
i don’t think the swings are as great as we might be thinking they are. this conversation only really comes up in the playoffs. and we’re talking about, what?, 3? calls that were blown. out of a ton that were correct.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
no, 3 calls that greatly influenced the game. There were plenty of other bad calls. The ump’s strikezone sucked the whole Twins-Yanks game. Halladay and Lincecum both benefited from generous strike zones, etc.
i don’t mind weird strike zones as long as they’re consistent. if that means consistently “bad” then so be it. part of the players job is to adjust.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.

It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
This conversation comes up seemingly every game. Guessing what the umps zone is going to be tonight. How it’s different this inning than it was last inning. How he was calling this pitch a strike all night, how could he call a ball there, etc. This conversation is endless and a) it has nothing to do with the performance of the players and b) creates a situation where the rules (i.e. the strikezone) change on a fluid basis.

Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
Today's statements won't help "Warm Hands Cho" get rid off that Tomism
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
I'm contemplating writing a fanpost about Cho; I feel like I understand him.
We’ve had KP for a while now, and KP always had a quote ready, always had something to spin. He burned up the phone lines, made rumors happen. But Cho, we’re seeing, seems to decline every opportunity to inform us of what’s going on. He seems inactive, distant, content with the roster.
As an analytical freak, if I were GM of the Blazers, I wouldn’t tell a reporter anything, ever. There’s no advantage to me in telling Quick or Freeman or whoever what’s going on in the least. In fact, I’d out and out lie and tell them nothing was going on, because that’s the most advantageous statement for the sake of my organization.
We’ve become so accustomed to constant information from KP that we’re nonplussed at the notion of a GM staying mum.
So, if I had to offer a suggestion, I’d say that we should likely ignore what he says publicly, because he’s only saying it if he thinks it benefits him in his goal to make the Blazers better.
he's been the GM in the two dead months of the NBA season
how many moves have happened league-wide since he’s been GM, period?
ok
(1) I don’t believe him implicitly.
(2) He probably thinks that either Joel or Greg will be back in short order.
(3) picking up a D-league big might qualify as nothing to him.
We need a way bigger sample size before we can say whether or not he’s too inactive a GM.
most of my Cho bashing is tongue in cheek (obv a few months is not enough time)
but still, he is saying the same things KP said, but without the friendly fluff. KP would say “i luv my guyzz, I don’t wanna trade no one”, where as Cho is strictly business and no-nonsense (hence boring).
I don't think Cho would actually lie, I think he just doesn't volunteer
ANY information and only says what he has to instead of “no comment”.

It's tough because without the GM, Portland has no true public-facing spokesperson
KP covered that role, and when they replaced him, they never gave the organization a new face for the public.
yeah, do we even know if Cho is this guys real name? I suspect there is no cake, and that there the cookies are made of people and the wizard of oz is just a funny man behind the screen.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
KP wouldn't say on the record who he is after either. No GM in his right mind would.
I understand Cho not wanting to immediately release a player 1 day after he got the injury and scramble to find a replacement. But going from Nate’s statements, I would expect him to show up in Cho’s office until next week and ask for another big man. And Cho knows how that Dave’s analogy about trucks standing in your yard is right when it comes to Joel, Greg and Marcus. You can’t bank on 3 of them being healthy at the same time. You might not even be able to bank on 2. And if that happens, your backup options are LaMarcus who is usually remarkably healthy but not a center, and really undersized PFs who no way can play the 5.

I fully expected this to be the case when Cho was hired.
He had a major role in Presti’s organization, which, next to the Spurs, is the most close-lipped and unreadable in the league. It makes sense to me that after seeing the advantages to an organization with such a uniform (and bland) media presence, Cho would seek to emulate the same strategy.

Still plenty of games
I’ll be more concerned if we have one preseason game left and he still hasn’t shown signs he’s ready.
This is kind of cool, about Rob Beard and his onside kick
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/austin_murphy/10/08/oregon-onside-kick/index.html
“There’s an opportunity to bunt the ball here,” Coach Oz informed the kickers — “bunt,” naturally, meaning onside kick. So the Ducks repped the play all week.
It’s a peculiar skill that eludes some kickers, as Ducks fans learned the hard way a year ago. (With Oregon storming back against the Cardinal, backup punter Tim Taylor’s onside kick went only eight yards. Stanford recovered, then iced the game with a field goal.) But Osborne was struck by Beard’s consistency. After “12 or 13” practice repetitions, by Osborne’s estimate, the redshirt sophomore was batting a thousand. Beard had also recovered a fair number of those — also by design. His kickoff team had been instructed to wipe out any white jerseys they saw.
It was decided: The bunt kick was a go! Oregon would spring the trap on its second kickoff.
When that moment came, Osborne gathered the kickoff team around him. “All right guys, this is gonna be a big play for us,” Beard recalls Osborne saying. “We’ve got to get it.”
“I’ve practiced this twenty times,” Beard told himself, slightly inflating the number. “This is going to be easy.”
It was not the most high-stakes kick he’s made this season. A walk-on from Fullerton, Calif., Beard had earned the kicking job in the preseason. As he was lining up a 35-yard field goal in practice on September 10, the day before the Ducks’ game at Tennessee, Chip Kelly sidled up to him.
“If you make this kick,” Kelly said, “I’ll give you a scholarship.”
“I looked at him, and I said, ‘OK’,” says Beard, who is not the excitable type. “There was no way I was missing that one. I just lined it up and took a deep breath. I was calm as a butterfly — just kicked the ball and watched it go through the posts.”
Not long after, with the team bunched around him, Kelly told his kicker, “Rob, tell the guys what I just told you.” Beard did.
“Rob, you got a scholarship,” Kelly announced, and a cheer went up over the practice field.

A French newspaper is reporting that American forward Charlie Davies, who nearly died in a car crash last year, was caught speeding at 125 miles per hour last weekend.
The website of Le Progres newspaper reported Friday that Davies was driving an Audi Q7 last Sunday when he was caught on a motorway in France’s Jura region.
Davies, who plays for French club Sochaux, was involved in a car accident on Oct. 13, 2009, that killed another passenger and left him severely hurt. He was not the driver.

And not that people don't speed
I’ve driven enough there to know they do (although the big problem is randomly riding the bumper of other cars even when there is no traffic).

no, it's not a record thing
Phillies have best record in MLB. The winner of the All Star game gets homefield
#5
It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
It would make too much sense
For MLB to do it by record like the NBA/NHL do.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I think they should alternate
despite interleague play, the AL and NL are relatively discrete entities, and the team with the overall best record is more likely to have achieved this because of imbalance in its league.
Especially since the All Star game that changed the rule only ended in a tie because Bud Selig said it should. What a doofus

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I heard the proposal was to have the two wild cards “play-in” against each other, which isn’t a bad model. Kinda stupid to make the rest of the baseball world watch the two most marginal teams while waiting for the real thing to start, though.
Yeah
But all the division winners get to rest, which is cool

it’s all moot….

it's really a terrible terrible rule

Do you use your debit card online normally?
Or was it likely compromised elsewhere, then used online by someone else?
It's so hard to avoid.
Even if you online use your credit card online, and only at reputable sites, you can still get your number stolen if a clearinghouse (where they process card transactions) gets compromised. It’s so tough to know the cause, though sometimes your bank’s fraud investigator could have answers.
one would think it would be easy for Facebook to track the IP of someone doing so many withdrawals.
I added it up, and they took out just over $2,000 since 9/27. I’m surprised nobody with the bank’s fraud department caught it.
They could be sitting at coffee shops or something.
I am surprised they didn’t catch this. Normally banks are constantly watching for unusual transactions.

Community might be one except for me because most shows I haven't caught from
the beginning of them airing. But shows I got into later like the office or scrubs have no value (as far as paying for them) because their always on tv anyways. Most new shows I get into i see cause their on instant queued making owning the dvds also pointless.
Community also seems like a show that will only have a 3-4 year run (because all the characters will have graduated college or it gets canceled for poorish ratings) in that case I’ll buy all the season.

normally I would talk about the game or stupid stuff that was on my mind and the runners would mostly ignore me. I loved playing teams with people I knew on them or coaches I knew because then people would actually talk back. It was also fun playing teams I couldn’t stand as I could just mess with them and they could do nothing. I’d imagine as well as most players know each other in the pros they talk about what their gonna do that night or a crazy play they saw recently.

New Mythbusters aired on Wednesday
Great episode so far. They revisited dogs who can sniff out people or contraband.
that stuff is messed up
some of the dogs are soooo unreliable. Or else they will be pretty good for a while, then just inexplicably have 12 false positives in a row.
The episode has been fascinating so far.
They’re trying to fool the dogs and so far just can’t do it.
What situation does this refer to?
Customs? That’s the only place I remember seeing dogs. Aren’t random searches permitted there? If so, I can’t see how false positives would be a civil liberty issue. Unless the dogs were unfairly selecting a particular group.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
No, the Supreme Court case refers to a traffic stop. You’re right, they can basically do whatever they want at Customs, including profiling and extended searches with no reason.
OK
I can see it being more of an issue at traffic stops. If the dogs have a lot of false positives, that’s poor PC.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
ya, but I’ve never personally seen a drug dog at a traffic stop, so who the heck knows how common it is.
I have no idea how much they use dogs
Like I said, I don’t remember seeing them outside customs. Oh, when I was in 4th grade Officer Friendly brought a dog, too.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
ha right?
police dogs are cool. Our neighbor had a dog who failed out of the police academy because it couldn’t deal with gunshot sounds (the very last hurdle.. It took her months to train it not to walk back and forth trying to pick up a scent.
BTW they're not doing traffic stops as part of this.
Just the general concepts of trying to hide contraband from a dog trained to find it.
Also, trying to mask your own scent from a bloodhound chasing you, and they also forced a bloodhound to pick a suspect out of a linup (spread out over a field) based on the scent of their shirt.
This is really more about what we see in movies rather than for legal concepts
Though the PD was nice enough to let them use their K9’s for some of the testing (such as whether coffee or peanut butter are effective for masking scents dogs are trained to find.
They tried peanut butter, coffee grounds, bleach, citronella, and perfume.
They covered the item in the disguise, placed inside a sealed rubbermaid, and put it in a random spot of a big warehouse, then walked all over to make sure they couldn’t track the scent of the person who planted it.
It was fun to watch.
They also used the dog-sound thingie to try to get the dog distracted.
As far as the bloodhound, they’ve used a big river, they’ve placed smelly fish down in the path, and they basically put him in a no-scent suit that was fabreezed (and the dog didn’t get a fabreezed shirt to work with).
They're packing a bunch of luggage based on what people might bring back from Europe
Stinky cheeses, meats, etc, in a room packed with luggage. So they’re showing the concept of a customs check.
Hahaha they just used the luggage room again
And stuffed the contraband in Kari’s baby’s used diapers, then sealed it in a ziplock!
This is such a fun episode. And the dogs are adoooorable.

It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
lol, we talked about this the other day. it’s just a tiny sample size + A-Rod is actually really good in the playoffs.
He was terrible in the clutch in general for a really really long time. He was the king of hitting home runs early in games or late in blowouts. But now that he’s broken through he’s a pretty legit clutch hitter
#5
It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
yeah, but the anti-A-Rod sentiment was really built on his first few postseasons with the Yankees where they got knocked out in the first round. So he only got about 15-20 at bats which is not nearly enough to judge someone’s performance.
Oh for sure
But he sucked in the clutch in the regular season too. Still a small sample size, but it didn’t help the rep. I’m just glad he’s over it

It would need to be customizable
So you could set it to only pull up videos with at least x number of views. You’d cut out 90% of the worst stuff that way. It would still mostly be garbage, but it would at least be better.

It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
ok, it's pretty funny that Melky Cabrera is the Braves' #5 hitter
he was 1.2 wins BELOW replacement this year. A truly awful player.
I was kinda mad the Yankees traded him
But he added a ton of weight and regressed hard this year. It’s been painful watching him lumber around left when he used to be a really good defensive CF. And in fairness to the Braves they are missing C Jones, Glaus, and Prado. They’re just about out of options

yes, you're counted

jwquick – Big news from Blazers locker room Friday: Joel Przybilla says he will return to practice Sunday for the first 45 min of full-contact drills

good managing is preparing for contingencies.
Wasting a player for a half inning of defense in a tie game is weird.
they only have one pitcher left
and that was really poor pitching. you have to get a ball in play there.
