would acquiring Gilbert Arenas be a good move for the blazers and how would fans react?
I was reading about Gilbert's comments about washington being "Wall's City" and it got me thinking about his next destination if he was to move. as a blazers fan my first two reactions where would he go to portland and then immediately he would never work in our culture. that was my knee jerk reaction but should it be? first off would be what we would have to give up to get him. as far as i can see it would take a package of Arenas and McGee for Miller, Przy, and Rudy. Blazers would get a Starting PG and a young 7 footer that could back up Camby and Greg with much less worry about injury problem then the current three bring to mind. Blazers would also gain the loss of Rudy who at this point might be as detrimental to team chemistry as he is a positive for his shooting. lastly the blazers would gain a roster spot that could be used in many ways from another defensive specialist to another center to patty mills and give him a healthy year to prove himself. the Wiz would gain the loss of paying a back up PG 17 million dollars a year along with a shooter in Rudy that could make a very explosive guard tandem with Wall, but realistically they would do this because never in their wildest dreams would they think they could get Arenas off their books. so i think they could get the deal done if they wanted to.
So the question turns to would Gilbert be good for the team? I don't know if that question has a yes or no answer. he is or at least has been a great three point shooter which is a very important aspect of playing PG in Nate's system. He is at least as fast as Miller which doesn't say a lot about top speed but an important distinction to make. before his gun incident he was dropping 22.6 ppg 7.2 ast 4.2 rebounds and 1.3 steels and that was with a lot of the defensive guard pressure on his shoulders and a slow start coming off injuries, playing next to Roy he would get less touches but easier touches. if he doesn't become the long term option his would at least open and additional 3 years of PG play to continue looking for or developing a PG of the future. in my own opinion Bayless isn't that future and i think we need more time to develop another option. Arenas' contract is large but we do have one of the richest owners in sports and he badly wants a championship, i hate to overpay for guys but PG is the position that will put us over the top if any position is going to do that. so it becomes a question of chemistry and attitude. we know there is a high level of arrogance we know he isn't completely living in reality, the question is can he coexist and flourish here? will he flame out in derious miles fashion of can he be the NBA Michael Vick? even though depending on your politics you might say that one did something much worse then the other they have similar story lines. Arenas is a head case in a fantastically talented body with a great court vision will he come back lost or driven and in a blazer locker room where you get rid of rudy could they handle one guy being a little out there? is the role of the dice worth it to find out?
lastly it falls to the city, as it should in portland. the team is our movie stars, our spotlight for the city nationally and most importantly our states children playing basketball for 20,000 of the craziest most protective parents in american sports. there are a lot of arguments for better fan bases in american sports but no fan base even approaches the parenting and loyalty to each individual player. how many fan bases can speak intelligently about the 16th guy on a 15 man roster, how many fan bases put their franchises in timeout, the loudest cheer at the first preseason game this year was for Joel in street clothes, a guy that on a healthy team is the 3rd center and when they cut over to a baby, A BABY, the whole crowed booed until they when back to joel and the rose garden went crazy again. how would those fine people of which i am one react to a guy with Arenas' history? I don't know but i'm starting to think i would like to find out.

A happy Arenas is necessary for a healthy Arenas.
As someone who has dealt with depression, my sideline-ameteur analysis is that he might want to talk to someone.
"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau
let's see
bloated contract – check
huge ego – check
history of guns – check
a shadow of his old self – check
and I actually like Gilbert, but i’m gonna say no thanks

Looks like a classic jailblazers acquisition
This looks like a typical Trader Bob late career move, most of which did not work out well.
Agent zero hates Nate
For being slighted for Olympic competition. And Then he came up quite short of scoring 50 on the Blazers as his revenge.
Really, we don’t need a scoring point. Miller is fine, Bayless is acceptable and neither has the issues that Gilbert brings. Besides how would Arenas move his shark tank. That dude isn’t the best investment and not just because of his injury track record.
he wants to drop 50 on the blazers
practices will be very intense

I wonder though if he is a slightly different person? i’m sure he is always going to be the guy he is always going to be, but i never thought i would hear him talking about his team belonging to someone else and him being ok with it. i’m not saying its right or wrong but i think its interesting to weigh the pros and cons and to dream on him becoming a trailblazer a little as it is never a decision that i will have to make personally.
he is kind of a ball hog
isnt he?

yes and no. he shared the ball with caron and antwan but not many others. last year before he got sat down he was averaging 7.2 assists a game with a lot of 10 ast games. but yes over the years he wasn’t been very interested in passing the ball to any inferior players. im wondering if he has started to mature now that he is 28 and been out with injuries and been replaced on his own team.
toxic
Gilbert Arenas is about as attractive as toxic sludge is to an environmentalist. The guy is going mental. He can’t play anymore and he can’t handle the fact that Wall is the new star in town.
I don't think Cho would throw the fanbase under the bus...
but I don’t have a good feel of his attitude towards our “culture” yet.
injury prone
just dont need another player that cant stay healthy…
My least favorite statement to hear .....
Arenas’ contract is large but we do have one of the richest owners in sports
For several reasons:
1. I think any businessman and any organization wants to, and should be financially prudent.
2. Overpriced players usually under perform. Don’t want to be the Knicks, or the Mets or any of those team with huge payrolls and bad teams.
3. Just an excuse for the team to raise ticket prices.
Just because we have one of the richest owner's
is not a reason to go acquire the worst contract in the league just because he might be starting to mature at age 28.
I think the results of the poll above pretty much tells the story.

non-starter
I was born in '52, and I believe in #52. Hang in there, GO.
You too, Przy: everyone knows you're the heart & soul of the Blazers.
