A Rudy question...

There is something that I don't understand about the whole Rudy Fernandez situation that I am hoping someone better versed in league rules and the CBA can help me with. Rudy says that he wants nothing to do with the NBA, does not like the style of game, is homesick, and wants to return to Europe. He states that he is no longer interested in being traded to another NBA team. The Blazers say that they plan to hold him to his contract.

If he really doesn't want to ever play in the league again, couldn't he simply retire and void his contract? I know that other players have retired while still under contract and they couldn't go play for anyone else, but were not bound by contract to continue playing for their original team. Isn't this a valid option in Rudy's situation? If not, why not? If so, how does it affect the Blazers?

I will look forward to what all the basketball business gurus have to say on this.

Thanks,

Dave
