10/5 A New Beginning JuNK DRaWeR
Ah, and so begins a new pre-season with a "A New Beginning" junk drawer. It all seems so poetical (ha!): A new season, new faces, Martell Webster seems to be doing well on a suddenly (potentially) much better T-Wolves team, and on a personal note, I'm eating a little crow, going back to former employers I thought I'd left long behind, and asking for work again. Ah, the spring of autumn.
Speaking of new beginnings, did you know the Death card in the Tarot signifies new life (generally)? It's the idea of letting go, whereas The Devil card (often) means clinging to things unnecessarily. Perhaps the most shaking card is that of the Blasted Tower, which carries the strong implication that foundations were not built on solid ground. Oh, let us hope, BlazerManiacs, that our feet are on solid bedrock and if not, that we realize the sand for what it is before it's too late. Then again, the old must drop away for the new. I don't know where I'm going with this … Here's the Junk:

It beeps once then if he barks again, it shocks him. Now we don’t put it on him, we just push a button on the collar when he barks and he stops and comes and sits at our feet.

Better coach
Better tools/ability on defense
Better mindset
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
Hollinger: “A 2 in a 1’s body. Still needs work on handle, left hand and decision-making”
He’s a better outside shooter than Jerryd (though Jerryd could get up there), but Jerryd has better handles and draws far more fouls. Neither will be a classic point guard any time soon. It’s just funny to me that people think the Spurs have a solution for a time after Parker, and we don’t.
Going with Hollinger’s profiles, there aren’t even many PGs out there who would fit what we need. Some like Augustine have the outside shooting ability but have a lot of other weaknesses. Some like Mayo who seems to have the shooting down might work next to Roy but aren’t real PGs – and he can’t drive past quick players though that’s Roy’s role anyway. Outside of Paul there seems to be no complete player in development, and he would be hard to get and Hollinger seems to believe in his knees becoming problematic down the road.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Well, nobody’s probably really concerned because by the time Parker hangs ‘em up we’re looking at a pretty different Spurs team as Duncan and Ginobili are both older than Parker.
There is a pretty good chance Parker knows that as well and bails next summer as the top free agent aside from Melo
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Steph Curry would be perfect on 1 side of the ball
But our perimeter D would suffer a horrible horrible death, and I think he’s untouchable. Deron Willimas would be good (he played a lot of 2 at the Olympics) but there would be a BE riot, and he’s untouchable too.
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
Like against Phoenix?
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
wait until christmas
that’s not a statement of “you’ll see,” that’s just how long it’s going to take to know what the options for this team are. How does Matthews look on the wings? Are Oden and Przybilla back? Is Fernandez working, or is he worth anything? Is Bayless getting where he needs to go?
Then we can decide who we need to trade for.
I suppose
I still think a consolidation trade in the offseason was the way to go. Right now we have too much good but not great talent.
Don't Criticize
Yeah
Problem is we seem to be in wait and see mode. I don’t want another season of waiting, then a season adjusting to a new PG…
Don't Criticize
Well, we’ve contrived to spike Rudy’s trade value by waiting too long and acquiring a replacement in advance, don’t seem willing to part with Batum unless we’re blown away. So I think we’d be pretty underwhelmed by what we could get for what we consider “expendable.” And right now the most urgent need for our roster might be someone like Dampier.
For now, though,
I don’t see what’s the matter with another year of Miller. He was more than serviceable for you guys last year.
I thought he was pretty good too, but people questioned his “chemistry” with the rest of the team.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
He is just a bad fit with everyone but Greg
Maybe not so much this year but we’ll see.
Don't Criticize
I thought he was one of the biggest and most underrated reasons
you guys were able to win in spite of all the injuries.
but now they’re buddies!
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
I think that was overblown early in the season.
Andre and Brandon were playing well together until Roy’s hammy acted up.
Roy’s best month of his career was December of last year.
You sound like jk
Check back, I agree he is. He is no good on quicker guys though. There are a lot of those types playing PG now.
Don't Criticize
who is good on the quicker guys, one on one?
The pool of those guys mixed with the pool of PGs that can shoot mixed with the pool of PGs that can create their own shot is very limited. Like, Chris Paul.
There are a lot of people better than Dre at it
Also, I don’t think we need shot creation from the one. Just shooting, decent defense and an ability to get everyone involved.
Don't Criticize
Name many PGs who are available and can defend plus hit the three.
Basically, Mario Chalmers-types. There aren’t that many.
Remember what happened in the playoffs with Blake? We had only one playmaker, and it killed us. I think our point needs to at least be able to break his man off the dribble and get into the paint.
Billups, Conley, Collison, Hinrich, Felton, Hill, Holiday, Nelson
Maybes – Augustin, Gibson, Beaubois, Douglas (All would need improvement/adjustment to be starter quality)
I’d take any of those top guys over Miller
Don't Criticize
what part of Conley do you like?
the low PER, high turnovers, or low scoring efficiency? Those are my favorites. :)
Lower career TOV% than Miller
Similar TS%
You saying Miller is a low scoring efficiency, high turnover guy? : )
Don't Criticize
Okay, let's take it one by one.
Billups. Ok, cool. Although he’s not a great defender of quick point guards anymore, much like…. Andre Miller.
Conley. Is small and will get abused by any kind of bigger guard, very inconsistent. You’d take him over Andre Miller? Um.
Collison. He’s available?
Hinrich. I like him too! But there are some character issues that make attaining him unlikely.
Felton. Is Raymond Felton.
Hill. Not available, not a great playmaker.
Holiday. I like him too! Liked him pre-draft. Not available.
Nelson. Not a defender at all, benefits from Howard’s interior help. Also not available.
Augustin, Boobie Gibson, Douglas? There’s no way they’re on the same plane as Andre.
Beaubois. Not available, no playmaking skills, not a great defender.
Fair enough
I guess I was liberal with available. We had opportunity to acquire/interest in a lot of those guys.
As far as Conley goes – the league is tending towards smaller, quicker PG’s so I’m not that worried. Miller and Billups will post him up, sure. Davis too. Who else?
Don't Criticize
I fear we either have to go all in and trade Nic/LaMarcus/Greg, or go unconventional

Meh
Projection: 13.0 pts, 4.0 reb, 5.5 ast per 40 min; 11.63 PER | Player card
• Solid outside shooter off catch or dribble, but rarely attacks basket.
• Great footwork and fundamentals on defense, but a bit undersized.
• Can play both guard positions but more a scorer than passer.
Hinrich has clearly lost some zip with the ball. He posted among the lowest usage rates at his position, and his decline in field-goal percentage can be tied directly to the shocking rarity of his shots at the rim — he took only 16.9 percent of his attempts in the basket area.
He’s not a good enough outside shooter to thrive that way. Hinrich sunk 43.0 percent of his long 2-pointers and 37.1 percent of his 3-pointers, both of which are good marks, but between the paucity of free throws and the lack of layups, he was subpar in both TS% (52nd among point guards) and usage rate (57th). Between not creating a lot of shots and not making a high percentage of them, his offensive value was pretty limited.
Fortunately, his defense doesn’t appear to have suffered. Hinrich has quick feet, great fundamentals and has cut his fouls, making him one of the league’s best wing defenders even though he usually gives up inches.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban

like Pelton said, he needs to hit at 40%+ from three to avoid being an utter liability on ‘D.’

Boiling water jokes? Are we the frog and is someone turning up the heat?
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
the analogy Rich Cho used about how at 211 degrees F water is just really really hot but one more degree and it boils. so if people on the team can each do a little bit extra, one more degree extra, they can do greater things.
i read it in an article and then Jeff Pendergraph pretty much repeated the speech word for word. it was funny.
like yesterday, at one point, the JD was at 211 degrees. if we all could have done a little extra, we could have made Timmay boil over.

And it wasn't even me.
"[S]ince men enjoyed very great leisure, they used it to pursue many kinds of commodities unknown to their fathers, and that was that first yoke they placed upon themselves without thinking about it, and the first source of evils the prepared for their descendants. For, besides continuing thus to soften body and mind, as these commodities had lost almost all their pleasantness through habit, and as they had at the same time degenerated into true needs, being deprived of them became much more cruel than possessing them was sweet; and people were unhappy to lose them without being happy to have them." -Jean-Jacques Rousseau

it would have been more entertaining if Cho would have used some complicated aeronautics formula to make his point. I’d like to see Jeff parrot that back.
At 211 degrees Fahrenheit, water is simply hot. But add just one more degree of heat and water boils — and boiling water creates steam, which used to power locomotives
i just wanted to hear Cho say this sentence out loud.

Facepalm. Well so far, KP could have done the exact same job as Cho.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Also, Cho should know that in greater heights with less air pressure water boils at different points. So in his image, winning should get easier the higher we go.

hmmm
I am hoping that was just oden throwing out numbers without really knowing what he is saying.
At any rate, it appears he has learned his lesson by taking better care of himself.
I can see where 300 would happen pretty easily
Mom cooking him fried food, can’t really moe because of the knee, etc. What I took away from his statements was less “omg greg got huge” and more “he’s learning good eating habits.” Said he was at 270 and still shedding weight, which is what’s important
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
he also said something about almost quitting drinking. When Roy was asked about it, he said he thought that was really good, a step in the right direction.
The speculation has been Greg must’ve been hitting the sauce pretty hard for other teammates to talk about it. Of course we are talking about BRoy who has probably never drank a beer. Who knows how much he’s actually been drinking the last couple of years.

Or the 30 bucks that they priced them at this year.
I love Groupon. It blows my mind that all the businesses that sell stuff on there don’t realize they aren’t gonna make hardly any monies.
I saw businesses complaining about it on the news a few days ago. An oyster bar in Portland was hoping they would sell around 100 coupons and ended up selling 1,600. They are mad about it cause they aren’t making money. How do you not think of the worst case scenario when selling your product on there?
More importantly
It’s free marketing. If you’re confident you hae a good establishment then you just recruited a bunch of new business who should return, sans groupons, in the future
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
yeah
another lady that had a small business was worried that if she did it, she would basically be giving away merchandise to people that might not return.
She should be more confident her store is awesome, or just close now
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
That's a huge key
A really small business may not have the financial resources to absorb that much “discount” while waiting for the return business.

Early word is that the marketing aspect is overrated
Most businesses find people who use groupon come in, have high expectations, don’t spend extra, and don’t come back, with random exceptions.
Groupon has been selling it to stores as a way to build repeat business
So there’s frustration on the business’ part that has been building recently.
But you’re correct. Not a surprise that groupon users have high expectations, don’t pay well, and rarely tip.
we averaged about 12 dollars per day in tips for the farmers market. That's for three people working four hours.
and that’s not 12 dollars for each of us, that’s 12 dollars to split up between us. It was really frustrating.

it’s hard to know what to tip at a farmers market stand or something like that… do you tip the same as a restaurant? you didn’t get the same service? but you still should tip… but how much… now he’s staring at me… I don’t know what to do… I guess I’ll walk away with my change… mmmm… this kebab is good… i should go back and tip… but that’ll be awkward… best to avoid eye contact

hee hee, this is how I’ve felt in similar situations all the time, and I’m an over-tipper from growing up in a family of waiters and waitresses.

I don't know what I can say without sounding greedy, but when I go to a bar I usually tip a buck a drink

yeah for sure. that’s lame. I think we tipped you when we came. Unless I’m feeling really broke I usually give at least a dollar in those kinds of situations. The only place I find myself not tipping all time time is coffee shops and pizza by the slice. I’m sorry people are mean, TD :(

It didn't bother me as much as I hated it for the people helping me. Making a dollar an hour was kind of embarrassing

it's less work, but there's a level of service at most bars that is above what people expect to get at a farrmers market
for instance I put a ton more work into a building than you do into a sandwich, but I don’t get tipped at all… (that sounds snarky)
.
.
Anyhow, fwiw, I tip a buck or 10% in these situations (whichever is more) but I understand why people don’t

The term businesses used was "entitled" I believe
It tends to be younger folks who don’t have much money, but expect everyone to take care of their needs.
I’ll see if I can bring up the article, as long as everyone promises to not let it break down into a “what is a tip” argument.
Some basic numbers...
42% of businesses overall who used Groupon said they would not do so again.
Profitable businesses gained more from Groupon than unprofitable ones, who often said it actually hurt their bottom line and did not bring repeat business (13% return customers). 1 in 5 profitable businesses also would not use it again, and were typically happier with the promotion (31% return customers)
Restaurants were the most unprofitable category, describing Groupon customers as “entitled,” poor tippers, and definitely not repeat customers. Spas, on the other hand, were the most profitable (though their Groupon-using customers were still bad tippers).
I'm a little confused by the article
because in one place it seems to refer to whether the business overall was profitable, and in another it appears to talk about whether the promotion was profitable without a clear distinction.
I think the details are in the doc they link.
There’s a distinction that is placed on that; whether the sales that day were profitable vs the business’ overall profitability.
It's a similar demographic to Woot users
It’s not like people who cut out coupons from papers or collect them out of packages yet in terms of demographics. Not nearly mainstream enough yet, mainly just techies.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
I’ve tipped based on my service for the few groupons I’ve used. I used one at a restaurant in SE that I know forget the name of and the service was so terrible that I tipped poorly but would have done the exact same if I didn’t have a groupon. And I haven’t been back due to the terrible service, which is too bad because the food was delicious.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."

i don't know what Criterion Collection is, but I do love that movie.
that seems like a lot for a DVD, isn’t it?
Criterion is known for having some of the best transfers of films as well as lots of good extras on the discs plus cool cover art. they also take a lot of foreign films or other influential lesser known films and give them a really good treatment. although, i did just look through their entire catalog and there are a couple Michael Bay movies….
anyway, it is a little bit extra for the dvd, but criterion is usually worth it. also, the regular price on TRL is 29.95 so it’s on sale at this price i think. i don’t buy them often but if it’s a good deal, i’ll spring for these editions.

If the fire department were acting as free-market actor, they would’ve negotiated an exorbitant fee to provide their services.
which, it seems, the guy said he would pay and they turned him down.
this almost reminded me of mob “protection” except the fire department didn’t physically start the fire themselves cause the fee wasn’t paid.

naw, it's definitely a covered loss

As well they should since the insurance company has to account for the higher risk of insuring them.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
i'm not an underwriting expert, but I don't think rates go up more than 33%
insurance is very socialist in that respect, they spread the increases out over all of the higher risk people so that no one person becomes unable to afford the product.
Or they might just refuse to insure them
That would work.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
he doesn’t actually live in the town, though. I would think the fire dept might have the law on its side. Karma, probably not so much.
i wonder if they pay taxes that go to the town or just the county and if the fire department’s only source of income from the rural areas is that $75 fee.
conceivably, the 75 fee might be in addition to whatever tax money they get from the town and any incorporated rural areas the fire department covers.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
by DrivetheLane on Oct 5, 2010 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions
I presume similar.
That they aren’t paying taxes that go to fire department in the unincorporated area, so they’re required to pay for services. Happens in a lot of unincorporated areas.
As they noted, if this wasn’t enforced, people would never pay until their house is on fire. It’s a bit like fire insurance, you can’t buy it when your house is burning. And if all people don’t pay, there are less services that can be funded.
It’s an ugly situation all around.
i guess i don’t see the problem with just paying when the house is on fire.
heck, just make it 75 fee once a year or 500 if they have to put out a fire on a house that didn’t pay the 75.

It was 75 once a year I believe.
The article as a bit one-sided, it looked written to instigate folks. I’d rather see it be a bit more well-rounded, and explain WHY it’s not allowed to pay as it happens in more detail.
I see problems on both sides here, but the article leans toward “poor guy! they wouldn’t put out his house because he wouldn’t pay for services he wanted!”
the article makes the accurate assumption that people with the means and ability to stop a crisis from happening
should stop a crisis from happening.
yes. this is the biggest problem.
what happened, in the end, is that the city decided these people’s houses, belongings, and pets weren’t worth $75.

My wife asked that.
My understanding in these situations is that the fire dept has a duty to save human life regardless of status. But if someone lies about a person being inside who isn’t there, the person would likely be up on fraud charges.
it's interesting...this situation is a microcosm for a lot of public services
i don’t see the difference between this and universal health care. people die of silly things all the time because they can’t afford the price of treatment.
it’s ridiculous to me that a bunch of firefighters would actually stand there and watch people lose everything because of $75.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.

ultimately
this sort of thing should be mandatory. There’s basically no additional marginal cost for the fire department to cover one extra house within the coverage area. It should never have been optional.
It's a tough spot they're in
It’s possible they used to put out every fire, regardless of pay, and were losing significant money because nobody paid until there was a fire, and it was unsustainable.
The article doesn’t cover that either way.
I’d rather the incorporated area simply tell them they won’t offer service, but will help them set up a volunteer fire department for the unincorporated area, and they can work out payment as they wish. Or the unincorporated area should accept being part of the city and paying taxes to get fire service without the 75 dollar a year fee.
I feel absolutely awful for the guy, but the situation is not simply the firefighters’ fault. They probably don’t enjoy standing there and watching a person’s life basically burn down.
This is a much bigger issue with governmental services and decisions on where to live and the expectations involved. Of course, the article doesn’t really delve that deep.
all I'm saying
is once you go through the effort to expand your infrastructure to cover the county, you may as well make it an out and out government service. Collect the money as a tax instead of as an optional fee so this situation doesn’t come up.
If that’s not feasible, then I’d be with you that a volunteer deal is the way to go.
I don't think they're allowed to collect taxes on unincorporated areas
I think that’s the crux of this entire situation. So yep, either incorporate or build your own fire dept..
Or form a special district
That does the same thing. That’s what they do in Oregon and throughout the west.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
ahhh
hrm I always thought we paid fees to the township where our cabin is in Minnesota. They maintain a lot of smaller roads and stuff. Interesting.
Example of a special district
Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue:
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
you'd have to charge more than 500 bucks
that would mean if there was less than like a 1:7 chance of your house burning down, you wouldn’t pay the fee. It’d probably have to be more like 20,000 bucks to make the system work.
the article gives us the impression that it’s just the fee. This is me being jaded in the opposite direction, but lots of people live in unincorporated areas because they hate “the government,” just want to be left alone and don’t want to pay taxes. And sometimes, you face the consequences of that.
Of course, these people sound like they might just be really poor, since they didn’t have enough insurance coverage either.
Depends on the area of course
I live in unincorporated Washington County and its one of the bluer areas in the metro (although that’s a fairly recent trend).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yep
those folks better get their own fire truck and cut their own fire lines. Sometimes those people form a community of volunteers. It is Tennessee, that shouldn’t have been a problem.
It's easy to be underinsured though, just because of inflation
But I think they have a habit of not paying the fee, for one reason or another:
The Cranicks said they also forgot to pay their fire service fee on time about three years ago. But the fire department at that time did not hesitate then to put out a chimney fire and let them to pay the fee the next day.
And I’m not sure how much poverty fits into it, since they refused a check for emergency expenses and will be living in their RV.
http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/southeast/2010/10/05/113824.htm#ixzz11VgKXqES
Again, they should've saved his house and billed him afterward for their services.
That way, everyone wins.
yeah, they coulda billed him the full amount of the services.
Bill him a days worth of pay for all the firemen, the gas, wear and tear, water, etc.
That’s pathetic. Stuff like this just makes me want to move into a cave and avoid humans for the rest of my life.

probably not worth it.
if insurance is paying the limits of the policy, their net loss won’t be enough to be worth suing over. I don’t think punitive damages are allowed in a property damage case. I could be totally wrong, though. I know nothing of TN law.
right. the laws that apply to medical professionals in emergency situations likely don't apply to volunteer firefighters.
also, what happens when someone’s house is burning down, and their name isn’t on the list because of a clerical error?

It’s only $75 and you never know when a fire will strike. It’s sad, but if they didn’t enforce the rule then other people would not pay the fee, which I’m assuming helps keep the FD running properly.

The cheerleaders at Bridgeport, Connecticut’s Central High School have a problem. Because parents are such buzzkills and the school board is populated with old people, the girls are not allowed to wear the skimpy uniforms that they ordered during the summer. OMG, that’s such … Wait, sorry. That’s all wrong. Reverse it. It’s the adults who want the skimpy uniforms, and the kids who are complaining about wearing them. Yep. Me return to Bizarro World now.
Them’s the uniforms in question, to the right. (Sans the skirts that the girls say were too small for them).
“It really hurts our self esteem,” said Ariana Mesaros, a senior on the team. “I am embarrassed to stand up here dressed like this. Is this really how you want Bridgeport to be represented?”
Several of the cheerleaders stormed their local district school board meeting to complain about the unis, imploring the board to order news ones in which the midriff is not exposed, and the skirts fit. The board claims that the uniforms were appropriate for the sizes that the girls reported the previous school year when they were ordered. In other words girls, they’re saying you got fat.

This won't help
A 33-year-old Silverton man is accused of fighting fire with fire.
According to the Silverton Police Department, Stewart Michael Hooper allegedly poured gasoline on his supervisor’s 1987 Ford Thunderbird on Saturday morning and then set it afire after learning he was going to be fired.

This is what you meant to ask, methinks

It doesn't get any better than this.
Speaking of which, I need to order league pass soon, so I can yell at NBA if the online signup breaks again.
Dang you Schonz
All other radio announcers pale in comparison to you.
But seriously, particularly not fond of Wheels.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I liked Wheels a lot for a while. He’s got some strengths— he’s very good at describing a play, telling you what is going on. For preseason, I think he’ll be fine actually since he won’t shriek with delight or get so depressed he can barely call the action. In the regular season, his swings of emotion make the gdt seem even-keeled.
He's a total homer
Not that the Mikes aren’t to some extent but not nearly as bad.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
as I've said before...
Rice is our best broadcaster by a mile, and when that’s the case, your broadcast team needs a complete overhaul.
Truly unfortunate
I feel like I learn something from Rice once eery 5-10 games. Not good from your color commentator
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
The SF Giants broadcast team is so incredibly good, it makes the Blazers shortcomings more annoying. The Warriors play by play guy annoys me, but I really like the analyst, former Blazer Jim Barnett.
to be fair
most local announcers are pretty bad. I like the announcers for both LA teams, but can’t really think of anyone who’s great beyond that in the NBA.
Jerry Reynolds. I like him too. Unfortunately, he’s paired with the awful Grant Napier.
I like the Knicks, Nets, Spurs, Lakers, Clippers, Timberwolves, Hawks and Wizards broadcasts.
The really bad ones are (in no order): Portland, Houston, Oklahoma City, Boston, Cleveland, Miami and New Orleans.
The rest I either can’t remember anything about or are around average.
You mean Bill Walton?
Not kidding, he’s doing some Kings games as color guy this year.

I grew up in Minnesota when Kevin Harlan was the local radio guy. What a guy to get you through some really awful seasons.
he had sayings for every player
“Spudd Webb goes coast to coast on the world wide web!!!”
for Tom Gugliotta “Gugolugolyugolyugoly!!”
“Kevin Garnett rides the magic carpet in for two!”
when the color commentator would say stuff like “let him take that shot until the cows come home,” Harlan would start mooing if he hit another shot or two.
My favorite Harlan saying
“Flight (insert player number) cleared for takeoff” when a player goes up for a big dunk.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Yeah, he really is quite good
Only one I like better: Gus Johnson.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
The Knicks (Mike Breen,Clyde Frazier, GuJo when Breen is doing ESPN games) and the Nets (A team of Marv/Czar, B team of Ian Eagle/Jim Spanarkel) have an embarrassment of riches.
The East coast teams (except Boston)
Are good.

where did that monster offensive season come from with him? changing parks and lineups explains part of it, but not nearly all of it.
Safeco to Fenway is huge for a right handed pull hitter.
Maybe there was a psychological effect of playing in Safeco?
I also wonder if a pull hitter in Safeco would try to compensate too much and screw up his swing.
The right/left disparity in Safeco is rumored to be a major reason in choosing Smoak over Montero.

Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
can I ask you a cast iron question?
Is it okay to cook lots of liquids, even letting them fully reduce in a cast iron pot? Doesn’t that strip the seasoning off?
it should be fine
the seasoning is oil which will repel water. If you notice a drop-off in performance, it’s not hard to re-season.
you can, but the boiling of the water will pull oils out of the patina
which weakens its resistance to rusting. Make sure to run it through a full seasoning process afterward
Blazers win!
yeah, but does the rice pick up the cast iron flavor?
It is a new trend in japan to cook rice in a cast iron. It is sort of retro actually, since they did it that way before rice cookers came out. for a while, everyone used a ceramic stove top bowl thingy, but it breaks pretty easily. Now the trend is cast iron, but there are complaints of flavor. I dunno for sure.
I'm sure there will be some change in the flavor, of course it should be barely noticable
Just make sure to re-season after you’re done
Blazers win!
I'm lazy and just cook rice in my ricemaker.
Only thing is you don’t get that burnt crust. If I wanted that, I think stone is best.
Thanks
i think those break pretty easily.
We have zero counter space, so a rice cooker is out of the question. We have about 3 feet of working space. A rice cooker would take up a third of that.
we are using teflon right now
in the meantime. Might try to find enameled something for less than $1 million dollars.
That's fine,
but stay away cooking sauces with acids. So no wine reductions or tomato-based sauces. The acid will pick up the iron flavor immediately.
Oh,
you’re talking about a cast iron pot? Enameled? If it’s enameled it should be fine for most anything.

this is crazy— he predicts them to go 46-36 and that’s with 72 games projected from Bynum. Kobe is not projected to decline at all— for whatever reason, SCHOENE is projecting some serious, serious regression from Odom and Gasol.

Basketball statistical analysis still needs a few more generations of improvement
But as I’ve noted before, I don’t feel it’s a perfect sport for statistics. They can help, but can’t nail it.
Though as Jeff Ma points out, statistics become most valuable where they point out something people don't see
But well, I really have a hard time seeing how this team should be any good. If Varejao goes down just for a few games, they pretty much have to trade for a big man immediately.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Yep statistics have plenty of uses, but they're still not reliable for comparisons and predictions
They certainly can flesh out detail that the human eye misses.
PG: Mo Williams, Ramon Sessions, Daniel Gibson
SG: Anthony Parker, Joe Graham, Danny Green, Christian Eyenga
SF: Antawn Jamison, Jamario Moon, Jawad Williams
PF: J.J. Hickson, Leon “The Jerryd Bayless of PFs” Powe, Samardo Samuels
C: Anderson Varejao, Ryan Hollins
Except for the PG position, that’s a pretty terrible rotation. And even with more experience that doesn’t get much better.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
yeah, its less far along than I thought based on last year.
Several issues at play:
- compared to baseball, WARP is not as accurate to describe that past
- compared to baseball, there are bigger issues in projecting the future based on the past, especially when it comes to changing teams. Its also hard to project which players will take big leaps and at what age people’s games will fall off a cliff, if ever.
Yeah,
It seems pretty obvious what happened with Cleveland, for example. LeBron’s stats are worth X number of wins, so subtract those wins from Cleveland’s total from last year, and you get about an 8th seed. Team sports don’t work that way, as opposed to baseball which is basically an individual sport masked as a team sport.
Warriors projected to nab the 4 seed.
Wow.
I’m a fan, KP2, but these projections seem way, way crazier than last years and I’m very very dubious.
Yeah, I'm no longer trusting him after that
The Warriors are NOT making the playoffs unless some strange stuff, really strange stuff (like every single western all-star from last year suffering season-ending injuries stuff) happens.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
If they're .500 that would be amazing itself
But .500 won’t make the playoffs out west.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
People are very excited in the Bay Area
Not “We’re winning a title!” excited, just “they could be fun to watch this year and not stink!” excited.
35+ wins is certainly possible. 45+ seems difficult.
I like a lot of their guys, but the mix is not all that perfect. The backcourt would need a bigger player. Lee and Amundson both could use a true C next to them, and while I really like Biedrins as a backup he’s not intimidating as a starter.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Yeah, I got the Golden State Warriors at around 35 wins.
I’m not a fan of its team defense or Monta Ellis, who’s too inefficient as a #1 option on offense.

Hollinger says Atlanta, and counts no success in the playoffs, very low pace, high rebounding rate and low steal rate among the similarities.

Do NOT screw with Bolivia's President
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/05/evo-morales-kicks-video_n_751431.html?ir=Sports
President Evo Morales kneed an opposing player in the groin during a soccer match against a team of political rivals after an apparent hard foul by the opponent, images of the altercation broadcast Monday show.
In video aired by local stations and posted to YouTube, the player is seen collapsing to the ground after Morales walks up to him and knees him during Sunday’s game against a team led by La Paz Mayor Luis Revilla, a former Morales ally who turned against the president earlier this year
Witnesses said Sunday’s bitterly fought game, whose final score was 4-4, ended with two players from each side being ejected.
Morales was not among those kicked out, but the player who fouled him was.
Members of Morales security contingent tried to arrest the player, Daniel Gustavo Cartagena, immediately after the match but Revilla interceded.

Chip Kelly is awesome
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindducksbeat/2010/10/oregon_football_in_which_chip.html
"If you go to Dairy Queen every day and get a Blizzard, the Blizzard doesn’t taste as good on the sixth day, you know what I mean?" Kelly asked, reaching for an analogy. "If you get one once a week, or once every two weeks," it tastes better.
Pinned down on the Blizzard question, Kelly said his personal record for consecutive days of going to Dairy Queen for a Blizzard is two.
His favorite: Chocolate with Oreo Cookie.

But it makes me love Kelly more.
At some point, folks will figure out how to stop it (because that always happens) but for now, this is pretty cool.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Is there anything super schematically innovative in there?
it seems like the conditioning is by far the more important point, which is underlined by teams doing reasonably well vs. Oregon in the first half, then getting clobbered in the second.
Its a more complex system than Florida say runs
Florida’s spread is more based on pure speed, not as much on misdirection or on QB decision making (Thomas has to make the right read in the Oregon system).
But on D, the answer is definitely no and there is no question overall that conditioning and depth are the keys.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
What other schools run the zone read? UCLA seems to have a version they copped from Nevada in the Pistol, I think Texas A and M does, Michigan’s offense looks a lot like Oregon’s…
Michigan is probably the closest
Denard Robinson is a lot like Dennis Dixon, unfortunately including the tendency to get hurt (he’s come out of the last two games with injuries).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Michigan is probably the closest I have seen to what Oregon Runs… but it relies on a bit moree trickery than oregon does
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
Because they don't have the talent
Oregon uses less trickery now than they did two years ago. A lot more power running plays.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Rich Rodriguez relied on trickery at WVU too… even when he had Slaton and White running things (who were perfect for the offense) I think it’s just something he builds into his spread
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
Denard Robinson is pretty incredible—4.3 with super elusiveness and pretty good decision-making. Other than that the team is relatively average.
Without Robinson they are not a bowl team
With him they could indeed win 8-9 games.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Part of it is also the competition
In the Pac-10 you use trickery because you can get fast defenses (like say ASU or Stanford) to over-commit to one side and then hit them in the other side. Its why Oregon did so well against USC last year, they used USC’s team speed on D against them.
In the Big 10 you use it because Ds aren’t that fast.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I think Big 10 defenses have generally been higher quality than Pac-10 over the past decade, with the exception of USC at its peak. Look at the number of defensive players from Iowa, Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan are in the NFL.
Its a completely different style out there
Go watch a HS football game in the midwest and its dominated by defenses, unlike out here where offense tends to rule the day.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Exactly
the talent on defense at top Big 10 schools has been better than at all the Pac 10 schools outside USC. On offense, it’s reverse.
Also, the Big 10 tends to be in the schematic stone age, with a few exceptions (Joe Tiller).
Which is also why elite Big 10 teams tend to, more often not
Lose to similar level teams from the SEC/Pac-10 that are more schematically advanced.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Sportscenter broke it down a little more than usual this morning… where it varies from other spread options according to them is how Kelly uses the Blockers and get’s his O-linemen down field ahead of the runner
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
And Kelly just keeps it random
Oregon could run or pass on any down and distance most of the game, that’s what keeps you off balance.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
except when he thinks Thomas made the wrong read... then he makes him run the same play until Thomas get's it right

I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
his winning is earning him some tolerance
but when/if he starts losing, people are going to bring the hate in boatloads, since he does a lot of borderline stuff.
Did you listen to his explanation of the onside kick?
Apparently it was planned on the second Oregon kickoff since they had noticed a weakness in the Stanford return game there.
That’s one smart coach.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
He said they wanted to test to see if the weakness they had seen on tape was still there
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yeah, I think that is cool
sorta breakin’ the unwritten code of onside kicks should be done in case of emergency only. Kinda cool, kinda gimicky. He would have probably won without it.
Flashy risks like that are the kinds of things that COULD backfire if the wheels start falling off.
I thought it was more a necessary risk than a gimmicky one
At the time, the Oregon D couldn’t stop Stanford and that TD was the first time they had momentum all game. That kick was the game changing moment

I agree completely
They scored there and it was a 4 point game. Completely changed things.

It’s amazing that at such a high athletic level, they could be conditioned that much better than their opponents.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
that's cool
it’s absolutely the case that the real difficulty isn’t the length of the game, but the lack of recovery time between bursts of exertion in a football game. So it makes sense that exaggerating this in practice would really really help your conditioning.
They also practice in the morning
Which keeps the athletes from staying up all night partying since they know that practice is hard.

My music collection is sooo damaged
I’d say 20-35% of y songs aren’t complete anymore, plus the ones that didn’t transfer at all
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
I'm pretty sure my HD is scratched
It corrupted a lot of my data, including my OSX kernel, so I used a Linux disc to boot it and transferred all my data to my buddy’s external. Then installed Linux on my computer and put my data back on. We noticed there were an absurd number of error messages when we were transferring data off my computer, and apparently they were all correct
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
And now my computer crashes when I hae fewer than 8GB space on my HD. So yeah, pretty sure there’s scratches o the outer ring of it

Definitely excited to still have a functioning computer, I definitely couldn’t afford a replacement right now. But I don’t even know where to begin restoring my music

Many people woulda given up long before you and just spent the money on a new one

Most people suck
Actually, I also really didn’t want to program a new remote. I haven’t gotten around to syncing it with my computers since the computers have been replaced. There are a bunch of components, and it’s a somewhat involved process.
I think I’ll sync it now.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
It's nice how just opening something up,
looking around and putting it back together with clean whatever contacts and connections that needed cleaning.
I had figured that was the problem before I opened it
And I did some experimenting to mostly rule that out. Though it’s still a possibility.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
I figured out I don't like Dave posts where he just says "name 1 or 2 players who will do x"
Everybody says who he thinks those players will be, everybody agrees or disagrees, and then just Zs ahead. No real discussion.
Controversial posts that require people to post longer comments are much more interesting.

Tom gave me a good idea in Dave's podcast post: If a Blazers was a car/truck...
We already had beers and movies and such in past fanposts.
I’ll start with a suggestion of Greg as a Ford F-150, Joel as a Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra, and Camby as a Toyota Tundra (a Cambry would be too small, hehe).

I saw a lady trying to park hers at school today. She backed up about 5 times trying to park it, which was unnecessary since the spot was plenty big and she had enough room to just pull in. I’d kill Joey Pena because he framed me for pulling Heidi’s hair in the hallway outside of our second grade classroom and I had to go sit in front of the principle and she called my mom.

Mao
Biggest genocide in recorded human history and it’s not that close
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
He committed genocide long before that
Killed 800k dissidents during the Korean war, for example
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
And I would argue that some of it should be put on his doorstep
He pushed forward as to not lose face after finding out that his economic policies weren’t going to work
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
Depends on if you include the entire death toll from the Great Leap Forward
Which was estimated to have killed 20-65m Chinese. He committed more traditional genocide before and after this as well
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
The Northern Chinese were warring with teh Southerners long before Mao came along.
Mao just got serious about it.

Timbuk2 does some good stuff, and if you wait, they’ll sometimes have a good sale with a big price drop.
oh, I’ve got a nice Timbuk2, I’m just a whiner. The fact that I had to bike with it as well makes it a bit more difficult. By the time I even get to school I’m exhausted and my back/shoulder are angry with me. And I walked a decent ways to pick up my second pair of glasses just now so had my shoulder is mad at me.

I bought a fancy laptop bag with my Dell a few years back but it doesn’t go high enough on my back. At the tightest setting for the strap I still end up with the laptop banging into my bum all day long. And it’s impossible to bike with a bag that doesn’t sit very tight on your back/shoulders.

Which makes it all but useless. And then your favorite artist can try to additionally sell you tickets and merch over it. It’s seriously one of the dumbest things Apple has done in a while, though I’m not sure if it was their idea or if the major labels said “wouldn’t it be totally cool if you did that?”. So they would let the whole neighborhood burn down if none of those houses had payed the fee?
I am struggling here.
Does anyone know of a product or issue in engineering that is a current event? This assignment is so dumb and vague.
It's disgustingly broad.
“Identify a contemporary engineering issue/problem or product of interest to you. Research this topic by reading articles published after September 2009.”
A splitting headache and the vagueness of this assignment are combining to make me a very unhappy camper.
I hate this class already… the teacher is a grad student who has no idea what she’s doing.
I only need to get as detailed as the article does.
It’s a memo, so we’re expected to produce a brief two page memo on the topic.
The collapse of the bridge a few years ago and the engineering problems of aging infrastructure.
The failure of the levees in New Orleans and the repairs necessary to prevent future incidents
The failure of Twitter due to the fact their traffic is outpacing their ability to engineer solutions to keep up (Causing the well known image of the “fail whale”)
It's not for sure an engineering issue
But the ongoing San Bruno explosion has led to tons of articles on the problems with high pressure propane lines through the US. Might be too early to have concrete data on this one yet.
So a mechanical engineer, an electrical engineer and a civil engineer
are debating about theology.
The mechanical engineer says, “God must be a mechanical engineer. Look at the human body. So many different parts working in harmony together.”
The electrical engineer says, “No, God is an electrical engineer. Look at the nervous system and how well designed it is.”
The civil engineer says, “You’re both wrong. God is a civil engineer. Who else would put a waste disposal pipeline right through the middle of a fantastic recreational area?”

Yeah the good part is that there should be a lot of data about it

Observations
Matthews-You da man
Batum-Simply awesome.
LMA-Good opener.
Dre-Its amazing how much you can play well while looking like you don’t care.
Rudy-Why must you confuse my dislike for you by playing well?
Luke-You are NOT Brandon Roy, don’t take fade backs off the dribble.
Dante-INFERNOLICIOUS!
Blazer Crowd-Great job sticking around til the end for the most part.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Batum's dunk
soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo soooooooooooo sick
he flew, he seriously flew
Agreed on Matthews. Dude is a beast.
None of our rookies looked like they belong at this level. I did find it funny that Rudy was stuck playing with all three of them, though.
Johnson looked fine
Williams is clearly a raw talent and Babbit needs to work on shot selection (he took 2 good shots and made 1, the others were crap).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I didn't see it, but my one observation from the box score is that the Los Angeles Clippers still suck.
They had basically two plays
A little screen and roll and then iso.
They kept doing things like taking shots they had no chance of making.
Aminu was junk for the most part, a fouling machine, Bledsoe was decent and Griffin really is a very raw talent.

Here's my draft board.
I probably would’ve gone with Avery Bradley at #16, Damion James at #22 — even though my homeristic instinct would’ve been to pick Quincy Pondexter, who I admit wouldn’t’ve fit at the 3 here due to his weakness from deep — and reached for Brian Zoubek at #34.
Plus there are no minutes for Marty if he was still here

Interesting. He looks like a good athlete in his college highlights and his combine numbers are quite good.
He looked like a legit NBA athlete to me in summer league.
I’m not expecting a star, but I am expecting a good offensive role player, maybe not this year though. I like tall players who shoot 50/40/90 as Sophs.
I hope I'm wrong and that he develops into player who can do some things. I am wrong alot, so he has that going for him :)
I think his main problem right now is that he is a true tweener. 4’s overpower him, and 3’s are too fast for him. His best chance is probably to gain 15-20 lbs of beef and be a stretch 4.

Although the refs tonight were clueless, not knowing he had fouled out.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Pendy fouled out too, bruh.
"So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."
yeah but it was after aminu
and aminu wasnt leaving and the refs were just maxin and relaxin bout it
but i was looking forward to reading all about how Wes Matthews is the final piece for a ring and how he’s now the 2nd best blazer of all time and will work with Batum to bring about world peace and an end to hunger.
Well, I've wrestled with reality for 28 years and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it.
He'll be terrible, but my fear of Nate McMillan possibly playing him extensively has subsided.
I, by the way, am still not sold on Wesley Matthews, who’s been getting a lot of hype lately.
I am drinking the Wesley kool-aid. Dude looked so good in person. The hips and shoulders of a power forward and the speed of a guard.

I look forward to discussing the crappyness of Wes in Dec.

I think you will be disappointed then! Wesley is gonna make you happy this year me thinks.

Come Christmas, we shall see how his numbers line up this season ...
compared to his rookie campaign. It could go either way.
Dario fail :(

I doubt he plays any power forward, but the similarly built Ruben Patterson was used there in ...
the past. for both Seattle and Portland. Of course, Welsey Matthews is a different type of player than Patterson.
Matthews is more perimeter-oriented than Patterson on offense, which is a good thing.
Regarding the “Nanny Raper,” he was a tweener forward because of his limited skill set and mental incompetence.
LOL no I don't think he will be playing any power forward for us. He just looks like a power forward that got hit over the head with a cartoon hammer and squashed him down.

a bulky, bruiser as our primary perimeter defender
we’ve always been looking for a guy like that. wes fits the bill, but i still think we were bidding against ourselves with that signing.
PHILLY!
Not me anymore. I really like what I've seen from him so fart.
It was gonna take a contract that Utah didn’t want to match to pry him away. I say job well done.
Also the contract was front-loaded so it won’t be as bad in the coming years.

Regarding Wesley Matthews contract, I'd've preferred to see annual descalating ...
salaries rather than escalating salaries. The hit this season would’ve been the same — so as to deter Utah from matching it — however, it’d’ve shaved off a lot of money in the later years of his deal.
So Randy Moss is coming back to MInnesota? says ESPN
Wahh?

New owner
But his is crazy. I think they’d be better off going after vick
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
Yes it would
I think Moss would be frustrated at Favres bum ankle underthrowing him on every deep ball. But it would ruin their draft for next year
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
Nope
The only one of the players not likely to make the roster that played was Mills.

Btw, I think the "OUR HOUSE" chant is truly super lame
After tonight. Didn’t work.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
So un-Portland
Now what IS Portland was the “Let’s go Blazers” chants started in the 300 level at random points throughout the game with no prodding by the announcer.

how long until kahn reaches mcfail status?
i mean… johnson (who will never be more than a glorified role player) over cousins, and then he trades away jefferson?!
PHILLY!
Breaking from the BBC
Liverpool (the once proud but currently struggling EPL side) is to be sold to the group that owns the Boston Red Sox.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Btw, does anyone actually use those Chalupa coupons?
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I don't really understand why I do.
It’s more of a hassle than anything to go out of the way and get them. And chalupas aren’t that great. But it’s a tradition … the Blazers score over 100 and I have to get chalupas.
No. Even when it's drunk time and I do go to T-bell I don't get chalupas.

Me either
I can’t remember the last time I went to Taco Bell.

I just spent the last hour or more on geni.com making my family tree
I was surprised how productive I was. Without any physical documents, I was able to get 6 of the 8 great-great grandparents on my mothers side, as well as all 4 great grandparents (along with their birth dates and birth places).
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
I thought this was interesting
“I thought we were tight on defense and guarding the ball rather than our man,” Roy said. “That’s the biggest adjustment we’ve made this year, really focusing on guarding that ball and moving with that ball instead of our person. Only the ball can score. Your man can’t score if he doesn’t have the ball. He’s really a decoy. So the biggest thing is helping and trusting that if I get beat I have four guys rotating to help. Not one, but four guys helping.”
From Freeman’s recap.

Yeah
I’m just wondering if this actually marks a conceptual shift or just that they are now doing what Nate has been drilling them on.

Chasing the ball sounds like his M.O.
I recall people saying he is not an advocate for strict man to man stuff.

i’m sure oregon has one with a laser tag room, a giant arcade, maybe 60 xboxes hooked up to xbox live to play madden on, etc…
Too bad Luke Babbitt looks not like Lucky Luke. Maybe when he grows back his hair. Rudy looks more like that.

From BtB
One person familiar with Mills’ situation acknowledged the Hornets have had internal discussions about Patty as have two other teams – including an Eastern Conference title contender.
Don't Criticize
He did mention that there was a backup plan for being cut
And didn’t seem to think it would be in Europe. Could the “Eastern title contender” be Atlanta? I guess maybe Chicago too. Title contender is a stretch for both those teams, but I don’t see the Celtics, Magic, or Heat being interested. He’d fit well on the Heat but they seem thoroughly disinterested in youth and upside
it's true, my v key doesn't work properly
Magic might work if they like the fact that he can hit the three
Other than that, I dunno where he would go.
I’m calling Hornets.
Don't Criticize
Yeah, with Pargo out, their backups are Willie Green who is rather a 2 and a guy named Mustafa Shakur

Patty was sounding pretty coy on media day too
He’s definitely going somewhere. I see it being in the NBA for this season at least.
