word of the day: ulterior
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts. Its purpose was simple from its infancy; a place where people could come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts. We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club... and people have really become a family here.
So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. Everyone else is doing the same, so you will find the JD an eclectic place where you might read something interesting, pointless, profound, or just funny within a few moments. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:
- Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized.
- Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated
- Remember everything you write is visible publicly
- Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
As you try and navigate through the junk drawer, remember that you can use 'Z' on your keypad to mark a comment as read and move to the next one and hitting shift-A will mark all comments as read.
If you start looking at the recently posted fanposts, you might notice that older JDs will be listed having new comments. Sometimes, these are just strange banters between some of the eclectic BEdgas that roam through old junks.. but often, these are attempts to get the 'Last.' comment.
Example: Here [Caution: Loading old junks can be dangerous to your hamsterscomputers and should only be attempted by the fleet of internet.]
This example is especially poignant for two reasons. First, the commenteur draws out the parallelism between the statement of 'Last' with the statement of 'First' to begin a fanpost. This is intriguing because while many people find 'First's to be annoying; most people ignore/are amused by/never notice 'Last's. Second, the commenteur ignored (again) the fact that commenting 'Last' on a fanpost that isn't close to expiration is just asking for trouble.

I like mine a lot. When I was researching what to get after my Dell(which I hated from the start) died I found, among other things ,that Asus are the second most reliable computers out there, behind only Toshiba. By reliable I mean their longevity. And they tend to be really affordable.

There’s a reason the BBB rated Toshiba with an F for their computer department before they started digging back out.
I have one
it’s OK, but has some weird things that go wrong with it. Like the power port seems to chew up the laptop adapter tips.
They've jumped into the market fast with a lot of models for fair prices.
Their quality is a bit up and down, and I’ve heard poor stuff about their support. (To be fair, nearly every laptop brand has some quality issues, though Asus is toward the middle of the list)
As a rule I’d buy an Asus for a cheap netbook, but I’d hesitate if buying one for my day to day work laptop.
I like mine, and they made it super easy to get it repaired when the HD failed

Brandon Jackson has been pretty useless. I got him free in a league with standard waivers, I’d hate to have paid a lot for him in an auction waiver league like the BEdge one(poor Cloudy). I should have played Stewart or Forsett…

the point system in my yahoo league is ridiculous. TO has 3 catches, 103 yards and a TD for 27 points. Rodgers has thrown for 131 yards and 3 TDs and he has 23 points… grrrrr

In my league its 15 yards for a point in rushing or receiving, while 25 yards for a point in passing. It’s also 6 points for any kind of touchdown, regardless of whether it’s passing, rushing, receiving, or even returning.

I know people are high early on the Pete Carroll era, but I’d’ve rather broke the bank on Eric DeCosta to be GM and brought in Brian Billick as head coach. I don’t know, though, for I’ll just be happy with winning the NFC West Division this season—even with a sub-.500 record.

football coaching is a young man’s game, which I think speaks against both Carroll and Billick.
In all fairness to Pete Carroll, he acts 10 years his junior.
My issue with Carroll isn’t age, but rather his mediocre history as a NFL head coach.

with platoons the way they are you are almost always at the mercy of a coach.

I feel like I know what I’m doing on the computer most of the time, and that website makes me feel like an idiot.

But really that isn’t the point. Its supposed to be a web portal for Blazer fans, most of whom won’t be that tech savvy.
I’m sure the guys doing it are just trying to put as much in there as possible to try and make it look different or fancy but its not actually providing the service that is required.

And that’s really behind the wave. Webdesign has become much more simple again in recent years after being all flashy (with Flash, duh) and artsy before. On the other hand you can assume more bandwidth for most customers, so you can add interactive and rich-media elements which they use as much as any team. You just have to be able to find and easily access them.

It just seems like a both websites are trying to blatantly illustrates how cutting edge they are. Both scream, WE ARE NOT YOUR AVERAGE WEBSITE!!!
Its better for people to enjoy a website and find the clever stuff as they go along rather than just to shove it in people’s faces.
That’s why, for all SBN’s flaws, I’m impressed. The websites are simple and (for the most part) functional but have some clever elements which make navigating and participating more enjoyable.

I will say that Posey’s had some awful luck the past few weeks— I can only remember a couple strikeouts— everything he’s hit is finding a glove. That said, he’s not hit enough balls hard.

hmmm, I’ve been following the team the past few seasons, and I’m not nervous at all right now (in stark contrast to what I’m like during Blazer games). I don’t get worked up for any other team… I guess since the Blazers are the only team I’ve been rooting for since I can remember.
the Giants are that team for me, with a brief break in recent years. Went to my first game at age six, Giants at Cincinnati. My dad’s been a fan since they were in NY.
I think this is the important factor.
I only get that way about OSU football and the Blazers, and those are what I grew up with.

I actually think this product COULD be useful
It you could set it up to be notified of your dog’s behavior. It ate three times, drank water twice, slept for 4 hours, barked for 1.5 hours and went outside once for 7 minutes. If you’re trying to track your dog’s behavior but have to work, that’s not bad.

It's a little bit overrated, IMO
It’s a “success failure”, a place so successful it’s starting to fail because they can’t handle it. The lines are insane, there is no seating and no process to get a seat, and the food is a good, but not legendary.
The wife, who knows her biscuits, rated theirs at an 8, which is very good, but only 6.5 for the overall food experience. I felt pretty similar.
Their process of bringing garbage and raw meat by us while we waited in line wasn’t helpful for our appetite. Can’t speak about the new location.
yeah, i haven’t been to the new spot, but the wait is intense. you gotta preplan i think.

Yeah, Eckstein has managed to make himself a legitimate major league starter— an overrated and not very good one, but still a legit starter. I have a lot of respect for that given his tools. He’s still annoying though.
Huff and Uribe have both had substantially better years than Eckstein (especially Huff) and Burrell has been excellent since he escaped Tampa. They are all way better players than Eckstein this year—- its just that in all 3 cases its a little confusing that they are playing as well as they ever had when all 3 looked done pretty recently.

I remember growing up when my dad would get up at 5am for some of the more important Manchester United games and he’d always get in so much trouble for yelling at really big goals. Giants have a really tough second half of the season. We play Dallas, @Philly, Jacksonville, Redskins, @Vikings, Philly, @Green Bay, @ Redskins. most of our divisional games come in that stretch and it’s very likely that NFC East is going to come down to a divisional record tie breaker this year.

The Niners org removed their support for Mike earlier this weekend, basically stating “well, we won’t replace him DURING the season”. His team responded by losing again. He won’t be in a good mood.
They won't say anything publicly.
Even if the 49ers were to snap their losing streak, turn around their season and win their division, people familiar with the situation said there are no assurances that Singletary would return even though he has two years remaining on his contract after this season.

A reporter asks some questions about last week’s game to the coach, he gives some answers, basically a fluff segment.
The reporter asked some straight forward, reasonable questions to him, and he flipped out and lost it, and took it out on the reporter on the air.
Afterward, the team said they have creative control of the segment, and had the reporter replaced to someone who they could trust would give them questions they want.
Yeah, it's a lost season for San Francisco at this point.

the frustration is understandable
more because they really never had a shot. It’s a charade to say that they are all in the same league when only about 45/130 teams have a shot to win the title at the beginning of the year.

You can understand the frustration though because they are in a system that was designed to prevent the little guys from breaking into the BCS. They’ve done all they can to schedule tough teams, gotten some bad luck with Va Tech not being as good as expected… and now they are passed by a team they dominated last year. As a mid major homer, I feel for them.
Ultimately what would be the most frustrating would be for Boise to get passed over for a Nebraska team that would only play one decent team all year (in the Big 12 C’ship). If that happened, it would be the ultimate indication that the big conference name is all that matters.

I think there's only three potential issues.
(1) health
(2) Bosh not being effective without a high usage rate and his perimeter defense not offering enough
(3) Wade and LeBron struggling to share the ball
but that’s being highly picky. The biggest concern is really the interior defense.

Interior defense is their weak spot, but that will only really hurt them against LA, Boston if they’re healthy, us if we’re healthy, Houston if they’re healthy and Orlando. Lots of ifs there huh.
I kind of think the only thing that could stop them is an injury to either Bosh or Wade. LeBron is a built like a truck though so even if they lose one or both of the others, they won’t blow up altogether.

I’d be more worried about teams with genuine quality bigs against them than interior defense struggling against penetrators.

Regardless of Bosh’s block numbers, he’s a poor interior defender. LeBron and Wade help, but they aren’t manning the middle, discouraging penetration at all times.

and I don’t feel comfortable making such confident assertions about players’ defense. So, either you watch every game or you trust the metrics more than I do.
I trust the metrics, read as much analysis as possible from decent scouts and watched a lot of Heat and Laker games last year
I wouldn’t have a clue about the finer points of players from most NBA teams but we get a lot of those games down here.
In particular, I have watched a lot of Mario Chalmers because I liked his potential fit on the Blazers.

How important is Kobe’s day to day regular season D if the Lakers end up with the one seed anyway?

He has been a great defender in the regular season

I think he has the capacity to be great, but is overrated over the course of the season. WE’ll have to just disagree there.

Its a question of desire.
Also, I think Kobe’s day-to-day defense and the mindset he has in that regard is a large part of what makes that bunch of offense first players (Artest excluded) a good defensive unit.

I have suspicions about Roy’s physical abilities to take his defense higher; I don’t question that the desire/effort would be there. Sure, defense is largely effort, but at a certain point, things like length, foot speed, size, and athleticism become pretty important.

Regardless of how tall he is, if wingspan is the determinant in steals (which is a reach, I’d say), imagine his wingspan on a little point guard. His arms are longer than Jason Kidd’s or Chris Paul’s… so he has the wingspan necessary. Make an argument based on quickness, maybe it’s more reasonable. But I don’t think you can knock his arms being only average.

Its a very basic thing, but if you have longer arms that the person you are guarding, it makes it harder for them to pass over/around you. So, if Brandon was guarding PG’s then it wouldn’t matter, but he’s not, so it does.

I don’t think 6’8" is all that great for SG’s period. I think it’s about average. When we’re talking about the reasons Roy can’t be a great defensive player, I think it’s legit to point out that he doesn’t have the wingspan of a great defensive player, because usually those players have above average tools.

I think on both counts he has enough to be a very good defender. Kobe has been a great defender most of his career, so I don’t expect him to live up to that.
The picture looks a lot different in terms of Kobe vs. Roy if Brandon is playing at least good defense rather than what he did last year.

For a large portion of last year, he was inefficient. He’s suffering more injuries. Lot of tread on those tires…

I see a bounce-back year of sorts for him. He’s finally taken care of the injuries he’s been suffering through and has all the extra motivation he should need from the Heat and the fact that MVP is an open race this year.
I see the 11-12 season being the first year of Kobe’s final descent into marginality.

Yep. Every once in a while, a "what's wrong with you? mine is working!" pops up.
For some reason, random people work fine. And streaming directly on the computer works fine, just devices.
Most of the comments on that site are complaints that the commercials will play endlessly instead of playing the video.
It seems like it doesn’t have to do with connection speed. I’ve experienced the problem before, although most of the time I don’t have any problems. The odd thing is that this has been affecting the site for at least a few months.

Don’t really know who this is aimed at. I don’t think any decent statistical analyst would recommend just taking the guys with the highest PERs and adding em together regardless of fit or whatnot. Of course scouting and systems matter.

Wayne Winston was his head stat guy. I’ve read a lot of Winston’s stuff and I don’t think he was as good as Cuban’s money could buy, especially since he has almost no experience with basketball and works solely from numbers

but, i would be surprised if this happens. first, i trust AK’s judgement on these matters also. second, Batum would probably be a better choice if someone other than a PG or Brandon is gonna initiate the offense.

Alls I knows is, I certainly ain’t watched him enough to know one way or another, and there are logical reasons it wouldn’t necessarily show up in his stats during his rookie season.
Not that I think he is a PG… I’m just hoping he can dribble and be a regular SG who can play defense and hit the open shot and be able to dribble at a level where ya ain’t screaming at the TV for him to pass it (like I would do with Outlaw).

It was real gimmicky, epecially at first, but ended up being a pretty funny episode. Family Guy was real funny, and I just started American Dad

American Dad got funnier once Bush left office
And they had to find new subject matter. Now it’s kinda like old family guy in that all the humor is story-based rather than just random sketches. Some of the characters are hard to like at first, but I think it’s pretty funny despite starting out real weak for the first couple seasons

Quick Fan Fest thoughts
I kept questioning if Matthews was #2. The 3 pointers in a scrimmage doesn’t mean anything, but he did truly appear to handle the ball like a normal SG, and not like, say, Rudy, who can’t dribble very well. I was surprised.
I couldn’t tell anything else about him. Getting hot from the outside for a game (though I am sure he can shoot at least decently) doesn’t mean much.
If anything, LMA looks skinnier to me. Good to see he can still hit the long two.
Batum and Roy look like themselves. Everyone kinda looked like how ya expect them to, and how we’ve seen them, and since Matthews is new and looks like he played well, I get why people went googoo gaga for him. No idea if he can pass, or handle defensive pressure when dribbling the ball up court, but he looked like a normal 2, dribblin’ wise, to me.

He had some semblance of ball control; it didn’t feel like he was chasing the ball like it does when Rudy dribbles. I’m not sure if it was just a fluky scrimmage, but it was promising.
It would be cool if he could bring the ball upcourt against some semblance of pressure.
He's still pretty young (24), I think he will still get better for awhile. His handles look better than the clips I saw of him last year, and certainly better than the old scouting report on him that poopoo'd his handle.
A Roy/Wesley backcourt would be hard to defend.

I think we need to see a lot more before we plan on them being the combo guards of the future.
Being a guard next to Roy means you let Roy do the heavy lifting, but ya need to be a very competent ballhandler and decision maker to allow Roy to pick and choose when to attack and not have to do EVERYTHING. I don’t think we can tell Matthews is that guy from a scrimmage with loose defense, no matter how good it looked.

I sat close, and LMA looked bigger to me, especially in the butt and legs.
I was impressed by Matthews as well. His handle was much better than I thought it would be and he is tenacious on defense. Dude has such a great NBA body, he has the hips and shoulders of a PF, but the speed of a guard. I think we are really gonna like him.
As impressed as I was with Wesley, I was equally disappointed in Babbitt. He looked just horrible.

There is a door that I either kick open or lightly punch open with my fist. I make it dramatic to be cute sometimes.
I was quite annoyed by certain things and when punching the door open like normal, I did it really hard and broke my knuckle. I’ve done that on this door twice. The bone is slowly getting thicker and denser, to be the ultimate clobbering machine Roybot!

It actually feels kinda neat
You know how when you’re sore after working out, and it hurts but it feels good? It feels like that.
It’s not like a PAIN-pain, like when I do my toe surgery. That just sucks. This is kinda neat, and like I said, the bone heals back stronger each time and soon it will be indestructable.

I developed a fear of flying about 3 years ago and I hate it. My whole life I NEVER had a fear of flying, and then just out of the blue during a flight ( coincidentally out of Vegas )
I started to nearly panic during the turbulence. I read about it and it’s a common fear to develop in your twenties. I’m working on it and getting better. My last flight wasn’t so bad, I’m getting better, but it still sucks. SUCH a stupid, irrational fear.

One of my friend’s dad has a huuuuuge fear of flying. He doesn’t want to talk to anyone before or during the flight. He won’t even sit next to anyone in his family on the plane.
Has he looked into any sand removal procedures?
Some are very affordable, and it’s a simple out-patient procedure.

then the other part is like…wait…the internet owners (comcast) should be able to do whatever they want…including speed up/slow down service to people.
comcast doessn’t own the internet, they provide people a way to connect to it… and they do slow people down/speed them up based on the tier they purchase, but they shouldn’t be able to affect the speed I can access ESPN when they have no ownership of the content…

basically it's whether or not comcast should be able to discriminate how fast they deliver content to you.
there was a case a couple years ago where they purposefully slowed down a guy’s connection because he was doing peer-to-peer sharing, and they didn’t want him bogging down their network (or so they said).
Should Comcast be able to do that? If yes, then where does the line stop? Should Google be able to pay Comcast to make them speed up Youtube and slow down others?

This guy wasn’t bothersome other than his volume. Otherwise, I found him hilarious. He complained to two different ushers about the music; the first one said, "it is what it is’’ then walked away. The second told him dryly, "the game hasn’t started yet.’’
He actually got up and went elsewhere before the scrimmage even began. Everyone in our area cheered and laughed about him once he did, and whenever Rudy scored I could hear him in my head.
He left behind his cup of beer.
He’s probably using the preseason games to gauge how well it’ll work. Might scrap the idea if peeps don’t buy in and it sounds too weak.

We often like athletes who are relatable to us.
I like like Kirk Hinrich ‘cause he’s allegedly a heavy drinker, I like Sasha Vujacic ‘cause of his style and taste in women, I like ESPN college football analyst Robert Smith ’cause he’s an atheist, et cetera. Shoot, I enjoy Charles Barkley ‘cause he’s outspoken and brash.
Heck, on a personal level, I know only one guy who’s a pro athlete — and he’s just a minor league baseball player in the Baltimore O’s system — thus, my only way of judging these guys is by associating something about them with my own self. Rather, my issue with Jerryd Bayless is his on-court demeanor that screams superiority complex — as he gives off that narcissistic BMOC vibe — along with his me-first style of play.
It's never good to match a strict hardliner with a cocky prick.

That might be why I dislike him, for I'm lazy and don't put out much effort.
Thought, the one thing that digs at me about him is that he doesn’t always seem too self-aware and, moreover, is overly cocky. It’s one thing to be very brash — which I am —however, it shows character to realize that there’s always someone out there who’s better than you at something, because that’s true humility.

Now, even though it’s a tad bit unfair of me to rag on Jerryd Bayless’ personality — for I’ve got Anankastic Personality Disorder (a.k.a., Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder), which is much different from the more well-known Obsessive Compulsive Disorder that’s related to anxiety rather than personality — he seems to display traits showing Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
I, by the way, am just playing armchair psychologist, so y’all should please, please take what I said here with a grain of salt.

That’s too bad, I hate when classes kill my pleasure reading. It happens way too often. I’ve been reading “The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet” for over a month now, and I’m really enjoying it but it’s nearly 500 pages and it’s fairly dense. It’s one of those novels where I’m happy to read it slowly and to sort of absorb it as I go on. The author (David Mitchell, whom I really enjoy) spent about 6 years researching it so the world is very in depth and the story is quite complex. I had planned on reading “World War Z” and “Dracula” in October just ‘cause I’m a nerd and I like to read books around certain times of the year that they can be associated with and both “Dracula” and “World War Z” being “horror” books I figured they fit in perfectly with the month of October. So I decided to take a break from “[…] de Zoet” and start up World War Z.
My classes seem like they’re going to be pretty awesome, but I did that on purpose. I was very picky and chose classes I knew would be fun. The Charlie Chaplin film class is already shaping to be quite fascinating, Japanese Painting Art History is going to be a lot more challenging than I wanted it to but the subject is really interesting to me, and Theater Appreciation is possibly the most awesome cake walk of a class I’ll ever have taken. We just got to plays each week and have to write a 2 page “response paper” to them.

In a way I'm relieved
But in the end, despite my feelings about what he did, I was watching and pulling for him. I don’t buy all the points in Bill Simmon’s article but I do think there is some merit in the idea that Vick was totally used to being around and involved in dog-fighting. I still cannot bring myself to forgive what he did, but I also can’t help myself pulling for him to do well.
So, in the end, I’m disappointed I don’t get to see the story play itself out. I’m also a bit disappointed in myself for being able to pull for a guy who did such abhorrent things.

But he was taking 20 hits per game, more than McCoy, and something like this was bound to happen, he’s not the biggest dude. If I were Vick
I would hope for Kolb to play well while I was out and to get traded to a team with a better o-line. The fact that he played so well behind those guys just makes it more impressive IMO.
I agree its likely they wait it out and put him back in when he’s healthy. Heard 6 weeks though, which is a long time in the NFL.

And maybe Kolb turns it around, but he didn’t impress against the Packers or us IMO. No ability to get the ball down the field thus far, we just planted our linebackers in the passing lanes and waited as the game wore on. vick may not be the most accurate guy but he’s impossible to defend properly, even if a team is consistently bringing pressure. I would bet the Eagles keep him all year if they’re still remotely competitive by the time he comes back. If they start losing every week with Kolb then I’d hope they would try to get something for vick at the deadline instead of putting him behind a patchwork O-line to finish a lost season, then losing him for nothing.

Missing Sidney Rice affected him more that I realized it would, and his line isn’t as good as it was last year. Plus, he’s flat out old. I don’t know enough about the vikings ownership to know if they’d spent exorbitant amounts to make the playoffs, but I think it would cause serious locker room problems if they traded for a replacement mid-season while favre was still healthy, no matter how bad he was playing. It sounded like the players dragged him back to some degree, and I’m sure some would stand up for him if something like that happened

Always found it incredible he could resort to his old swings whenever he liked. Saw it at one of his exhibitions – just pulled out the 97 swing a ripped an 8 iron 180 with no effort at all. I think there is a happy medium between his ugly Haney swing and the perfection that was his swing from 99-01 under Harmon.
