Rice Puddin'

Mike Rice.  The man.  The legend.  We're talking Merlin, Confucius -- and if you go waaay back, even The Swami.  Anyone remember the swami?

Well, I love me some Mike Rice.  He's funny, but he also really knows his ball.  So, for all you Mike Rice afficionados out there, here are some highlights from last nights game:

  • "If Vinny Del Negro benches Baron Davis, he'll go eat for a month"
  • Rasual Butler is not pronounced "Ras-ool", but rather "Rash-yule"
  • 3:14 to go in the 4th, Rice breaks down Batums movement and coverage of angles.  Great commentary.
  • PDX fast break and Rice says "you learn in Junior High to turn the defender".  Clippers Fail, Rice is disgusted.
  • Mike Barrett comments this year in the west, you aren't going to waltz into the postseason like you have the last couple of years.  Um, right, cause ... it's been so easy to get in lately.  Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
  • 1:54 to go in the 4th, Rice yells "Get in there!" on a Roy And-1 attempt. He's not a homer, really!
  • Rice can't eat too much in New York, he's off to Rutger's practice session.
  • Says Roy was in preseason mode, but looking better now.  I wonder if that's a mode learned from Dre?
  • Notes that Camby is integral part of Blazers, while Blake and Trout are gone in cap moves, leading to huge FA acquisition by LA: Ryan Gomes.  Says a better model for building is Presti's in OKC, and predicts a great OKC/PDX rivalry.  Says Lakers are on the way out and really need Bynum back.  To which I say, "Um, Pau?"  Would you trade Oden for Pau, if LA would take it?  Discuss.

Other random game notes:

  • Roy clearly asking the refs for a board to get the dbl-dbl at the end of the game.  Then catches the last shot of the game, an LA airball, to try to get that board. Still talkin to the refs a lot.
  • Bjarnson may be more telegenic than Bob Akamian, but, let's face it, Bob was the better studio host.  Bjarnson, between stutters and miscues, calls Roy's 7/19 effort "efficient."  ummm .... no.  Also says everyone gets a mulligan, which is not to be wasted on the Clippers.
  • Jeff Pendergraph on Talkin' Ball was awesome.  He's not a smooth talker, but he was better than most player's I've ever seen at sharing how the players approach things.

And now, I leave with some immortal words of wisdom:

I like Mike Rice and I cannot lie
You Blazer fans can't deny
that when Rice cuts in, mispronouncin'
Callin Violet Palmer a has-been
you get pumped, wanna stand and cheer
cause you think he's had too much beer...

So Blazers (yeah) Blazers(yeah)
Has your color man got the call (hell yeah)
Well make it, make it, make it, make it, make that crazy call
Mike Rice got game

word.

How come Rice and Merlin hate each other?

I used to go by tominhawaii. My real name is still Tom.

Because Merlin is always trying to steal Rice's thunder

that is why Rice refuses to be in the same room as Merlin.

He is a little crazy and a total homer, but the dude knows the game

I loved how he broke down the Griffin/ B-Roy jump ball, and explained who Griffin was going to tip it to and why. In all my years of watching basketball on TV I’ve never heard anybody else go into that kind of detail on a seemingly routine play.

At the same time, I totally understand why he drives non-Blazer fans nuts.

He did that twice last night, i think

the other was a batum/griffin jump ball? something like that. I hadn’t ever heard anyone explain jump ball strategy before either, and it was cool. My first response was “wow, I didn’t know there WAS jump balll strategy” and now I’’ve got something new to watch for in games. I never played, so, I try to learn more about the game when I watch.

As to being a homer, I dunno. I mean, he does actively want things to go the Blazers way, but at the same time, they are both always so careful to announce the correct result, and they never criticize the refs for making a correct call that favors the opponent. When I watch other announcing teams, I see a lot more glossing over the “get it right” aspect in favor of “the refs are out to get us” angle, and even when replay shows the refs were correct, the other announcers don’t always acknowledge that. So, to me, Rice isn’t as bad a homer as some other folks, even though he might pull for the blazers more obviously than some other announcers. Also, as an ex-coach, I think there’s a view of officiating that’s different than most of us have. maybe more … adversarial?

I like mike and mike broadcasts

largely for the foul thing you mentioned, they watch the replay and let it drop if it was the correct call…

Mike Rice makes me laugh out loud even when I am watching the game by myself…

The problem is, when they get off track they get REALLY off track..

I do think that they heard some complaints about not talking enough xes and os last season and that be why they went as far as covering jump ball startegy. Mike Barret was half chuckling chuckling as Rice was telling you where the ball would go, it seemed like something they planned to do before hand on a lark to provide more game detail thinking people would think it was over the top detail. People found it rather interesting.

I also like his line about Vinny getting and leaving Baron on the bench that he said right before the eat for a month bit…

I love me some Mike Rice too

he’s a weird combination of smarts and tom-foolery, and it makes the game fun to listen to. Having said that, I don’t listen to many other commentators since I watch all my games on Comcast (I know that makes me a part of the evil empire).
I like him!

I will be sad when he gets fired for sexual harassment or some off the cuff remark.

Mike's so much fun. Hey, it's a game

I would trade Greg Oden or Pau Gasol. I would trade Greg Oden for Lamar Odem. I would trade Greg Oden for Steve Blake.

yes/no/no

I hate liking Pau. But damn is he good. I know I’m not supposed to like Lakers, so, I just hope he gets traded somewhere I can cheer for him. Also, Lakers – Pau = good for us.

To me, Wild Rice is always entertaining, often informative, and just plain fun to listen to. The wife thinks he’s the best analyst around because of his humor.

if you go waaay back, even The Swami. Anyone remember the swami?

20 years ago, Rice had this bit where he spoke in a falsetto and used a woman’s name. I don’t remember what he called himself, but it was just as bad as you can imagine it was

Little did we know back then what we were in for…for the next 20+ years

But I don’t want the Snapper and Pat Laugh-at-me back…I’ll settle for Mike n’ Mike, thank you

then I met him and boy was I right. I was young too, just wanted to say hi.

ball movement, player movement

the calls will all even out, over the course of the game/season

Steve’s schtick got really stale. I’m glad Jones is healthy and has a national job, but he was a shill for Stern’s empire even though he drew a paycheck from the Blazers

I do remember that

I believe it was often when he called in to the post game show.

When we first got Rice I thought we really lowered the bar. Guy drove this Snapper fan nuts.

Now that we have more commentators than players I can’t say that he is the worst.

nothing

purests hate it apparently…but watching the homer broadcast is fun…

If you can watch the game

these guys being homers isn’t so bad, but if you can only listen to them then you would think that every call is going against the blazers in some kind of conspiracy.

game note

Pretty sure Roy was asking the ref if he could give the game ball to McMillan for his 200th win, not about if his rebound counted.

NAte's Blazer W-L should crest over 500

in a couple of months. He’s 12-13 games under, right now

and he’ll pass Rick Adelman as 2nd most games coached in Portland history at about the same time

You really think we're going to lose one of the next 12-13 games?

When the world knows Nico Batum as "The Inevitable", I'll be very happy with where he is as a player.
