Technical Policy

The new policy is a classic case of solving the wrong problem.  The real issue is the declining quality of referring in the league in the last decade or so.  Certainly, players have become more demonstrative in their disagreements.  However, this is just shooting the messenger.  The players have a point.  The refs consistently make bad calls and maintain easily documented biases.  Over time, the players will adjust and the technicals will decline.  Unfortunately, the problem of bad reffing is just being masked once again.  The league needs full time, independent refs.  Change will not happen.

exactly,

this can’t last, there’s going to be 4 technicals a game at this rate.

Sheed alone

would kill this policy.

I think if it winds up standing all season that Paul Pierce will make a serious run at 42 TFs. He just LOOKS like a Technical waiting to happen.

With any rule change, one of two things happen

1. Refs get bored and stop calling it a month later.
2. The refs keep calling it, and the players actually adjust, and the T’s get called a lot less.

Either way, this is a really hard transition period right now.

And I agree, the bigger problem is the refs themselves. Perhaps if players can no longer express their displeasure with officiating on the court, they’ll express their displeasure the way they should have for the last 20 years: Through the players’ union to Stern directly, then through the media if necessary.

I’ll be fine if I never see the “Duncan Face” ever again.

I'm guessing

this is the face where Duncan turns with his mouth dropped and his palms pointed upwards with the look of utter disbelief, that he, Tim Duncan, committed any sort of egregious foul… I hate that look with all that is holy. It literally makes me want to punch Greg Popovich in the face, among many other reasons…

yeah

I hate the players carping at the refs all game, but you gotta allow them the initial reaction IMHO.

These guys are intensley focused and frustration at a whistle is to be expected. It is the long drawn out sniping at the refs, running down the court behind officials running smack, that sort of stuff are all technicals in my book…

I know what the rule says, but in my world Armon’s T is not a T, Gordon and Aldridge are. Was the other one on Dre’? I think it was, he usually enters T territory in my book.

Maybe Dre will drive to score more and not simply attempt to draw fouls.

That T on Gentry in game 1 made me happy as well…

it's hard to watch now

but keep it up. They players will adapt, and in the end the game will be better to watch because we won’t have all the technicals or all the demonstrative whining.

Of course this assumes they can apply the policy fairly to all teams and players, regardless of star power, which I have 0 faith in actually happening.

I think there is a difference between someone using body language to express frustration, and directing that frustration at the referee.

And there is a difference between being frustrated and trying to intimidate the refs. Still, I agree that if it keeps up over time, the game would be nice without the nagging and pouting that we’ve come to expect from so many of the leagues stars.

If a player smirks or makes a stink face, is that a T?
That’s so much different than shouting at a ref.
Also, if a player shouts or vents his frustration away from the ref, such as toward his bench, is that a T?
Games will be 4 hours long if so.

Yeah exactly my point. I like the idea of cutting down the excessive complaining

But subjectively punishing AND fining players for having emotions is rubbing me the wrong way. What’s bothersome is these tech’s mostly get called when the average viewer hasn’t even noticed anything, ie. not egregious offenses. What I’m loathing seeing happen is a game where four technicals are called against a team resulting in made free throws, while the game is decided by three points or less. THE NBA, IT’S FANTASTIC!!!!

Given the labor and management situation

this looks like intimadation of the players by the league. I like the general idea of stopping some of the excessive whinning but this is too much.

by Jacksonville on Oct 27, 2010 10:55 PM PDT reply actions

yeah

the problem was there. Mostly the problem exists with the biggest stars – Kobe, LeBron, etc. Instead of just applying a common-sense approach, they have to completely go to the opposite extreme of calling every ticky tack thing. Except of course they won’t call it on the absolute worst offenders – the stars, so the rest of the league will suffer instead and nothing much will actually improve.

and just wait until the playoffs. you think the Refs are going to eject a Kobe or LeBron in the 4th quarter of a playoff game?

Armon's T was just silly

It almost looked like he was raising his hands to say that he’d fouled on the play. The others in last l=nights game I was okay with. I actually think this will cut down on the whining especially by the stars of the league. And I do hope that each technical is reviewed before a fine is levied. Armon shouldn’t have to pay for his T.

by NWfan on Oct 28, 2010 9:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Armon raised both arms seemingly out of frustration

Then quickly raised one arm to cop to the foul. It hardly seemed like it was meant to manipulate or subjugate the ref. My question is will we see players get ejected for this stuff, because if so we could really see some refs deciding games…

Honestly it wouldn’t be a bad new rule if they just enforced it throughout the entire game and not in moments. If they called the technical everytime a player reacted wrong then I would be fine (including the Kobe’s and the Lebron’s).

The fact is they wont and this silly rule just effects non aggressive whiney teams like the Blazers (Blazers rarely get technicals, they got 3 tonight). In other words it’s not needed.

interesting to see how this plays out

I would hate to see a late game missed call that results in a quick technical because a player reacts, then the play gets reviewed and the player is correct. The call may get reversed but the technical foul shot will still be taken. It could be the difference between a win and a loss. Other scenarios abound as well.

by mlsinpdx on Oct 28, 2010 12:03 AM PDT reply actions

did you watch

the Clippers game tonight? Techs assessed to Eric Gordon and Andre Miller were both ridiculous. They both had horrible “no calls” with contact on the shot and then they had the “nerve” to look at the official and pat their arms ina demonstrative motion that clearly “upstaged” and “insulted” the official to the point he deemed a technical was neccessary. I mean ok we get it Stern, you want to LOOK like you’re doing something to appease the fans but how about instead of this ridiculous policy, you instead follow the suit of EVERY other major sports league and bring an independent system in to officiate games. Oh thats right you couldn’t do that AND manipulate games and the schedules as well….. silly me.

I think the coaches should get yellow hanky

They get to throw it out on the court once per half to review the play. No whining by players or coaches just a simple hanky to signal a review.

I actually think it can be fun to watch the reactions to play (it gets the home crowd into it). I’m more opposed to players who constantly whine going down the court after a bad call…those are a lot more annoying to me.

The emotion and reaction is part of the game.

Another potential fiasco issued from David Stern's ego...

…I find this as bad as that switch to the new ball a few years back-the one the players said was nicking their fingers. I don’t give a lick about excessive complaining-I think players have every reason to complain given the woefully inconsistent nature of the calls they deal with every game. I think the success of the Magic/Bird NBA generation went to David Stern’s head a LONG time ago, and that manifests itself in needless dictates from on high like this one. And I’m intrigued by the suggestion (from the Fox site, I believe) that this is an attempt to intimidate players in view of the ongoing labor negotiations.

by Modal Rounder on Oct 28, 2010 1:10 AM PDT reply actions

It already looks like a cure which is worse than the disease

It’s going to interrupt game flow like when the Clippers had a fast break but a T (on Miller I think) was called.
It’s never going to get enforced fairly. That’s just human nature and stars will tend to get the benefit of the doubt. Roy was probably guilty of a T or two according to the new rules but he didn’t get called.
Players reacting with emotion (something we want to see) will be confused with players complaining to the refs (something we don’t want to see)

It won’t be long before it swings a game and starts a media storm.

YES. This is kind of a big deal to me. Don’t penalize the other team because you want to call a technical right now. It’s a case of the reffing being more important than the game.

Football and hockey have delayed penalties to not disrupt the flow, the NBA needs to as well.

When they did this a few years back

They were handing out T’s like candy on Halloween at the beginning of the season , but by the end it was the same old calls. Will this year end the same?

by runanjum on Oct 28, 2010 8:21 AM PDT reply actions

Has anyone else watched some NBA games this year

other than the Blazer games? These are already not being called evenly around the league. Here is a list of all the techs called this year, and how they were called on. See any on Kobe? Lebron? Wade? Duncan? KG? CP3? You can stop looking, because they are not on there. The only “star” to get a T so far is Melo. And anyone who watched the Laker/Houston game knows that Kobe did what Andre did about 4 times without a whistle. This is my problem with this rule, there is no way they can do it fairly. But my biggest fear with this rule is Steve Javie, because of the free preview of League pass right now, I have am actually going to look up the games he ref’s and going to watch them just to see what he does with this rule. I can’t wait to see him throw Dwight Howard out of the game with a 2nd T because he dared to raise an eyebrow to him after a foul call.

The NBA where amazing double standards happen.

by usmcr3049 on Oct 28, 2010 8:36 AM PDT reply actions   2 recs

This is the only concern i have with the rule

I fully expect that Pierce and Garnett will get T’s but Kobe, Wade, Lebron don’t. Those three are the most abusive of the infraction in the league.

by NWfan on Oct 28, 2010 10:04 AM PDT up reply actions

Eh, we'll see. So far I don't like it. Wildly inconsistent in the three NBA games I've watched so far this season.

Miller gets T’d up, but then the very next possession Baron Davis does the exact same thing but worse and gets nothing. I do like the idea of less complaining but at what cost? I have a feeling this rule is here to stay though.

Penalty <> Crime

Hey, I hate players whining… But this rule is too subjective. And to give these ticky-tack infractions the strength of a Technical foul? It not only makes people complain about this rule, but it reduces the strength of other technical foul penalties…

I mean, if you’re going to get tossed for raising both arms, you might as well be taking out the opposing player while you’re doing it… hard fouls on breakaways, that can cause injury? Hey, better use of a T than a sideways glance at a zebra…

I’d prefer it be a penalty that doesn’t stop play, and once you get to 4 of them, the opponent shoots 1 Technical Foul shot. But it’s a team foul concept, not an individual one. And I’d also like to see that kind of penalty for players screaming “hey” (Brandon, and other stars do this WAY too much) trying to draw the foul. Shut up and play, already…

by Visionary2 on Oct 28, 2010 7:23 PM PDT reply actions

I'm with you

Brandon’s yelling drives me crazy. I’ve wondered how many times he didn’t get a call because the ref is thinking, “Did you just call me blind?” But mostly it just feels arrogant to me.

As far as the techs go, I’m all for cutting down on whining, but I’d change the rule to “you may express yourself once for no longer than two seconds and without undue agression. After that, it’s a t for sure.”

By the way, superstars will be called for this, but only with their team ahead in 4th quarter 20 point blow outs or very early in the first quarter of games that cannot make a difference in standings. It’s call CYA.

by Interested on Oct 28, 2010 10:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree...

….under Stern the N.B.A. seems so paranoid. Everything seems based on the philosophy of using fines and power to keep others from doing or saying things that The League thinks makes them look bad….

And I agree, I’ve never watched a N.B.A. season and thought the problem with it was that the REFs weren’t calling enough technicals.

Players have changed. If the league doesn’t want as much show boating or fist pumping, jersey tearing….fine….

But the real problem has been inconsistent policy applied by the refs throughout the season and from team to team, player to player.

    Fix the Refs…not the players.
