This Old Junk - October twentiseventh of twooughtten
So every day, everyday people walk the line between right and wrong.
word of the day: pecksniffian
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts. It's a place for people to come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts. We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club... and people have really become a family here.
So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. Everyone else is doing the same, so you will find the JD an eclectic place where you might read something interesting, pointless, profound, or just funny within a few moments. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:
- Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized.
- Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated
- Remember everything you write is visible publicly
- Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
As you try and navigate through the junk drawer, remember that you can use 'Z' on your keypad to mark a comment as read and move to the next one and hitting shift-A will mark all comments as read.
While trying to figure out how I am supposed to get my free chalupa from last night's game, I was thinking about how different the fan experience is for everyone and wonder why people like to impose their own perceptions on another's experience. But I guess that's the definition of a conversation.
PS this is for u, 323!

It is yet another re-release, this time from 2005. Originally only issued 13 discs. Super-dooper rare. Not sure I even have one anymore.
It’s some pretty wild stuff, so watch out.

Has anyone mentioned that Iggy has requested a trade?
They just said it on ESPN.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
Someone get the paddles
to restart AK’s heart
Ben: "Pleased with the performance?"
Nate McMillan: "Yeah. I thought we played basketball tonight."
Okay, but then we are sans PG
Have to deal Przybilla, Babbitt, and Terry Porter for Chris Paul.
How funny would it be to send Dre back to Philly?
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
My point is include Andre in another deal
but then we are really stretching ourselves
Lineup:
Billups
Roy
Iggy
Aldridge
Oden
Bench:
Camby
Matthews
Cunningham
Johnson
Yeah, I’d take that team, though I bet in any Billups trade we would have to send out more than Andre. Still, just keeping Camby and Matthews would make it worth it.
Billups will only last so long
But that team contends for a championship this year. If Greg is healthy, that team is probably the favorite.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
Andre Miller, Luke Babbitt, and Elliot Williams still wouldn't be enough ...
financially. Dante Cunningham would have to be included in it or, perhaps, wait until Patty Mills is eligible to be traded in late December.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Iggy takes like 4 three pointers a game. (A third of them are fadeaways with a hand in his face.)
I think he could get in the high 30’s if he shot a tiny bit less.
But yes, Miller needs to be traded.

Following in CP3’s footsteps. If the team isn’t going to be able to win, he wants out. His agent has spoken with the team.

He doesn't even believe in his own team
what a shame
Just like can'tzano's parents didn't believe in him
Ben: "Pleased with the performance?"
Nate McMillan: "Yeah. I thought we played basketball tonight."
I believe the word is "talented"
though I guess I can’t tell how well that talent will translate into wins and losses.
All the NBALP games free on TV too
This “standard definition” is not getting along with my TV
Ben: "Pleased with the performance?"

He hasn’t found his range on the floor, but he’s doing everything else well.
Yeah, he's too talented to bust

Also Knicks up by double digits against Raptors away. Sign of things to come.
So far no. 1 missed FG, 1 board. I'll observe him for his first few games.
He was my complete wildcard fantasy pickup since he plays in a fast system and is quite talented.

Sixers can't have very good scouts. They forgot James Jones only reason for being in the NBA is hitting threes.
If there is one team that is in need of a consolidation trade, it's Philly.
Too many decent to good role players but not a #1 among them. They better hope Turner can be that guy. He has a chance, IMHO.

But that kind of skill would have been scouted
An ability like that doesn’t tend to appear out of nowhere.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
I would say it was scouted....
by the Blazers. They clearly saw something in him that few or no other teams saw, hence the trade of picks to get him. Based on the reports from his Blazers workout, it was his work ethic….his desire to get better. He asked for a Blazer coach to work with him on his shot as soon as his tryout ended.
If he absolutely tore it up in college, I would agree 100% with you. But so many skills get hidden in the college game because so much of what happens there is based on the specific system of any given coach.
I just think 2 games into a players career is a bit soon for me to say he has certain skills or doesn’t have them.

Haha, he looks like a slob.
I wonder if he was at this year’s.
I’m glad SOMEONE agrees with me. Ash thinks just because he’s tall and skinny he knows what he’s talking about.
This applies:
Regardingladiesmen…they don’t know what is good for them!! They are lucky they have us to tell them how to be. Sometimes their behavior is quite embarrassing.

you don't know what you are talking about
look at roy’s suit. It is soooo wavy. there is too much fabric everywhere.
AND, they are all sitting down, so you can’t tell how LONG the jacket tails end up because tailors are used to making them for regular people.
round guys look good in suits. Tall skinny guys should only wear really dark suits to hide all the waves of fabric.
If they’re filling the suits, the suits look good. I could understand your argument if they were wearing suits that were obviously way too big for them, but just ‘cause they’re tall and in shape don’t mean the suits look bad.

A 3-2 zone will shut down a 4 like Blake Griffin, though, since he can't shoot from beyond the arc.
The Clippers don’t have a guy who’s a real threat at shooting over the top — except for Eric Gordon, although he can’t create much for himself — as a result, a 3-2 zone was a solid defensive scheme.

From the fun recap of the game at McCovey Chronicles
Eighteen runs in a game started by Cliff Lee and Tim Lincecum? The hum you hear might be coming from the ballpark, but it could also be locusts. Careful driving out there.
Also of note: When Tim Lincecum’s brain went on screen saver mode in the first inning, I’d like to think that he was receiving some sort of signal from the ether. Something that said, “Hey, kid, just let him go back to third, and it will all work out.” Maybe without the bases loaded, Ian Kinsler approaches his at-bat differently. Maybe he hits his line drive two feet over to the left. Maybe this post-game writeup would have more references to dirigible accidents.
Maybe. Because that was the weirdest damned thing I’ve ever seen, and my explanation makes me feel better.

Have we talked about Clips fans booing their players down the stretch for missing shots?
As much as that token crowd could make noise, they made plenty when it became apparent they were going to lose. It made me feel bad for the players.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
that’s lame. I noticed that the place was basically empty with about 4 minutes left when the Clippers were still in the game. It’s funny ‘cause just yesterday I was talking about how cool it is at the Rose Garden ’cause no matter what we keep cheering and clapping. even when players lose a loose ball or a rebound or miss a second chance point we clap at them for the effort. it’s a beautiful thing.
Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
What must it feel like to be a Clipper?
Losing is bad enough, and that’s obviously a mainstay of the Clips. But getting booed is humiliating. Aside from the money, guys want to play professional sports to be appreciated.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
Griffin just posted something on his Twitter that I thought was strange but makes sense now
He thanked true Clipper fans. I’m guessing that would be those who don’t boo their own players
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
See, now the team and fans are training Griffin to be snarky
It will get worse.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
I also have fallen for Blake Griffin after one game
He was admonishing himself for giving up 6 offensive boards after going for 20/14/4 in his first NBA game. He seems to have a superstar type mindset. Really didn’t know enough about him when I said he would fail to live up to expectations. Injuries are the only thing that will hold him back. That sound like any other athletic big man we know?
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I can't imagine who you might be talking about
Griffin certainly impressed. I look forward to seeing how he does this year.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
If healthy he averages 15-10 at the very least
He’ll be efficient too. Only thing that may hold him back is guys being physical with him, but then he is a pretty physically imposing guy himself.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
He could get called for a lot of fouls if he keeps up the physicality
If you had replaced his body in that game with Greg’s, he would have fouled out.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
I'm surprised he isn't a better shotblocker with all that athleticism
But yeah, if Greg was that aggressive he would foul out in 15 mins every game and injure a whole lot of folks.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I'm not saying Greg would have committed more fouls
Although he might have. I’m saying he’d have been called for them. Blake got away with some over the backs, and some other interior fouling. They don’t give Greg the benefit of the doubt on that stuff.
He may learn to block more shots. I’d also say we didn’t really give him the opportunity. I don’t remember our guards taking the ball at him.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
I think that is entirely because of play style
Greg is an impossibly big, long-limbed individual and although he is quick and athletic, he looks gangly quite often. Griffin has a more compact frame and if more efficient in his movements so he looks more co-ordinated. I think that helps a lot.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
He has average wingspan.
Measurements:
Height(no shoes) – 6’8.5
Height(with shoes) – 6’10
Weight – 248
Wingspan – 6’11.25
Standing reach – 8’9
I will run naked through the streets if Oden wins the MVP this season...happily.
A 7 foot wingspan/8'9" standing reach with that athleticism should be able to block some shots
But yeah, he isn’t exactly super long limbed.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I was impressed by last nights performance, but the more I think about it the more I need to see more of him against a man to man offense to confirm his talent. I know the rebounding numbers were good last night, but it seemed like we took a step back last night getting defensive rebounds from the zone.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
The way he throws himself around reminds me of Martell in a bigger body.
Hopefully he doesn’t sustain injuries. I like watching him play and he’s kinda a ginger.
I was amazed at his quickness. For a guy that size, he’s as quick as a cat.

A couple days ago I was thinking about an Ethiopian restaurant in LA that's really good

Haha
I got food poisoning real bad once at this Korean wedding in LA, long ago, before I lived here. All of the white people at the wedding got super bad food poisoning.
But, it didn’t hit till the next day, and the day it hit, the last thing I ate was Ethiopian food at some nice Ethiopian restaurant. Spongy bread and lentils and ya dip it all and yadda yadda. That came puking up everywhere a few hours later, and even though I know it was the Korean food that got me so sick, my body associates that feeling with the Ethiopian.
So, Ethiopian food doesn’t sound so good.
#52
That doesn't sound fun
Ethiopian food is my favorite regional food, and it’s not really close.
There used to be a place in Portland that was the best I ever had. We went there weekly for about a year, then we moved to NY for a few years. The restaurant closed while we were gone. We had gotten to know the owners pretty well. They even got me a cake for my birthday., and they’d always send us home with crazy amounts of leftovers (not really from our meal, just extra food).
There are other Ethiopian places in Portland that are good, but not the same thing. The place in LA might be the best I’ve had aside from the place that closed.

I disagree with one thing in this quote, can you guess which?
“They were sending multiple guys at Brandon in the second half, and it’s hard to play one-on-three,” Camby said. “But we really didn’t need him that much in the second half. Our two best players are LaMarcus and Brandon, and when one doesn’t have it going in the first half, like LaMarcus, Brandon led us in the first half. In the second half, Brandon didn’t play well and LaMarcus did. So it’s good to have that balance.”

Some things come from preparation and work
Not everything. I feel lucky every time I look at my wife. I didn’t meet her because I practiced or devoted myself to anything. I just lucked out. She’s wonderful, and we’re wonderful together. It makes me feel lucky and blessed. I wish that feeling on others.

I don't mean to say there's not work involved

Rumor had it you guys were a few rows behind the basket on the Blazer bench side. There were a few good views of the left side of that section (looking at it from the free throw line), but not of the other side. I didn’t see any Bedgers, but it looked like a good number of Blazer fans were there.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
We were more to the left, and behind the basket
Not really on either team’s benches side.
Yeah, Blazers @ Clipper games always got a ton of Blazer fans. Later in the season, when it isn’t opening night and the fans of the Clippers have lost hope for the year, the tickets get dirt dirt cheap (like, 20 bucks for 3 rows from courtside cheap) and it’s almost a home game for the Blazers with how many of our fans are there. It’s fun.

It was a typical game in LA against the Clippers
Close for 3.5 quarters, then we win by 10+.
Happens every damn time I am at a Blazers vs Clippers game. Ugly wins.
Our bench was rough, Roy FINALLY got to the hoop (and got fouled), which we hadn’t seen yet… his jumper was on early… Dre handles Baron really easily… LMA was back to timid and indecisive LMA…
We didn’t play very well, but we’re a better team. Offensive rebounding, again, was the difference.
#52
One thing I noticed - Wesley had some problems with his handle, looked less fluid.
I think Roy is shooting really well too, lots of his misses look good but are just off. I see some of those efficient Roy like 12-14 type nights we are used to in the near future.

Wesley still pushed the tempo and stayed aggressive and played defense
So, even with his shot WAY WAY WAY off, he helped. It certainly wasn’t his night, though.

Ken Rosenthal on Freddy Sanchez's triple double
Now I’ve seen it all, but I shouldn’t say that, because in this upside-down postseason, surely something even more bizarre awaits.
The Giants not only scored 11 runs during a game started by Cliff Lee in the World Series opener, but – I kid you not – they also rolled out a startling new wrinkle.
A legitimate top of the order.
Freddy Sanchez, the team’s No. 2 hitter, felt terrible in his first round of batting practice, according to hitting coach Hensley Meulens.
By the end of the Giants’ 11-7 victory, Sanchez had become the first player to hit doubles in each of his first three Series at-bats, and the first Giant to collect four hits in a Series game since – ahem – Monte Irvin in 1951.
Sanchez, you may recall, was 2 for 16 in the division series. So was the Giants’ leadoff hitter, Andres Torres. Since then, the twin terrors are a combined 21 for 54, which equates to a tidy .389 batting average.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

I love PSU's librarians
Approached one because I was having trouble finding some old congressional records. Took her five minutes and she found everything I needed.

when i am unbelievably rich, and living like the count of monte cristo, i’m gonna fly around the country to basketball games to watch my fbb players play, instead of watching them on league pass
That's a good idea.
Maybe even hire someone to talk trash for you (call them President of Fantasy Basketball Operations)
Even if it isn't
I spent less to fly RT to Europe in summer three years ago than I spent to fly to NYC last year.

So Carmelo took like floor like a good soldier, got some love from fans and exactly as Masai Ujiri was hoping, the Nuggets looked powerful, whooping the Jazz. But that hope continues to fade. No matter what, Carmelo just doesn’t want to stay in Denver.
"They want to sit down and talk, but my thing is it’s way beyond this year," Anthony told Yahoo! Sports. "It ain’t got nothing to do with the new GM, Josh, the players. For me, I feel it’s a time for change. If I do nothing now, I’m never going to do anything. I feel like my time is now to make a decision if I want to leave or if I want to stay."

Pac-10 hoops media poll: 1 UW, 2 Ariz, 3 UCLA, 4 ASU, 5 WSU, 6 USC, 7 Cal, 8 OSU, 9 Stanford, 10 Oregon.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I think they could
Robinson is a great coach.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
That’s a lot further than I’d go. He did a great job in his first season, and he has a offensive system that can win some games with lesser talent, but he’s yet to show what he can do with a talented roster.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
He's a good fit for OSU
Which is a hard place to win due to its location and poor facilities (relative to the rest of the Pac).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
The Princeton offense has its limitations.
Last season, I’d say Kevin O’Neill was the best coach in the Pac-10 Conference with how he got USC to play NBA caliber defense.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Although what happened to Stanford?
Time was they were good.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Mike Montgomery was an outstanding college coach, and still is. He’ll keep Cal competitive even without all the talent they lost. He was a big reason Stanford was consistently good.
In the post-Montgomery era, Stanford was good for 2 years and the 2 reasons were both named Lopez. Once they left the cupboard was pretty bare, and the Trent Johnson situation was pretty strange.
From what I understand, Dawkins has brought it what some consider the top Frosh class in the league, which will be fun to see. Josh Owens returns after missing all of last season. Jeremy Green is the only returning player from last year’s team who’s a legit pac-10 talent though.

Dana Altman
He is a good coach but he can’t work miracles with little talent.
The team will get better (they already have a good recruiting class for next year) but this year will not be good.

Maybe Storyteller should send Cho a reminder that he still has to pick up the contract of Nic for next year this week
Unless he thinks having him become unrestricted and negotiating a new one without a CBA is a good idea ;)
Also see: Fernandez, Rudy
They're renaming the Pac-10 MBB coach of the year award the "John Wooden Award'
Makes sense.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
He hasn't been the same since he was attacked by those bugs in Cleveland
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
He was pretty good the next year also. For a while it looked like he’d be a very good starter.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
They were unable to pick a role for him
All those Joba rules probably stunted his development IMHO.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Maybe. Other young teams have called up young stud SP prospects to help in the pen though— David Price and Adam Wainwright being the two memorable recent examples— and then successfully returned them to being a starter. Joba might just not have the stamina or durability to be a SP, and given that it probably would have been better to groom him as Rivera’s replacement… but the value of a good SP is so much higher than that of an RP that it made sense to see what he could do as an SP.
I wonder if, in retrospect, they wish they’d never moved him out of the 8th inning role. Momo might have some interesting thoughts on this.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
How's the weather look like in SF btw?
Hearing rumors of rain tonight.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I agree
He could have done what Mo did before he was the closer, when he was setting up Wetteland.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Its a tough call to make with a guy like that though. If he can be quality SP that has so much more value.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
Esp. on a team that has issues with SPs
Absolutely.

People who bought this item also bought JaMarcus Russell Raiders jerseys.
That’s the difficult thing about predictions: They concern the future. When I look at old TIME issues on innovators and people that matter, they are pretty hit and miss.
The WAC gets another year to save itself
Fresno State and Nevada will remain in the Western Athletic Conference in all sports until July 2012 before leaving for the Mountain West and, in exchange, will pay a significantly lower exit fee after reaching an agreement with the WAC this week.
The remaining six WAC schools held a conference call Wednesday night to approve the agreement. In making the announcement Thursday, the WAC said Fresno State and Nevada each will pay a $900,000 departure fee, much lower than the anticipated $5 million it had hoped to collect from the two for breaking an agreement that they would stay in the conference for five years.
This means the WAC will have eight members in football and men’s and women’s basketball and other sports in 2011-12 after Boise State leaves for the MWC. The membership would include Fresno State, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada and Utah State.

Have we talked about how stupid Rambis is yet?
K. Love played 9 minutes in the second half of a game that went down to the wire. The given explanation was that Rambis liked how Anthony Tolliver was playing D on Carl Landry. Beasley and Darko stayed in.
This is getting absurd. Wasn’t getting big minutes for Love the whole point of punting Al Jeff for peanuts?
dont blame Rambis
blame his coke bottle glasses that warp the space time continuum and make your 9 minutes seem like eternity
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

The bigger problem I have with him is not last night
Its his insistence on the triangle with talent that can’t run it.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.
Based on the first couple games, I am going to have to sell on the idea that Aldridge is an all-star this year.
Not that I ever had high hopes about that.
I will run naked through the streets if Oden wins the MVP this season...happily.
