D-Day Minus One (OCT 25th) Junk
Things can only get better right? A lot of great memories from last season which at one point seemed to be a total goner as far as exciting moments go.
Some of my favorite games from last season
Spurs @ Portland (Oden Vs Duncan)
Bulls @ Portland (Oden beast game)
Warriors @ Portland (Great comeback game)
Blazers @ Dallas (Miller's 52)
Blazers @ LAL (Crazy late in the 4th)
Thunder @ Portland (MARCUS CAMBY)
Now with a new season on the horizon there are new hopes for us. We have already endured the worst that could happen last season.

I got to the arena early
And got a text from a friend saying he had been activated because Dante was sick.
When he appeared in the tunnel to come out for warmups I just about lost it with everyone else. Unreal.

what a crazy weekend
totally disconnected from teh internetz and I just found out about Oberto and Bayless. Gotta say surprised by the latter. Hoping ULC can control his rage ;)
the transaction list in brp’s FBB league sure is a who’s who of NBA superstars

It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
Something like that
Hey I got Super Mario Chalmers instead of Nate Rob, I’m happy.
Nate was my joke pick.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I was looking at Super Mario as well
Dre is our team’s only PG right now. But we got like 10 PF/Cs. Autodraft FTW

It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
I have 4 centers in my ESPN league
Granted one of those is Okur and we have an IR spot but I’m going to kill it on rebounds (and double doubles, which is stat category in that league).
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
double doubles are a fun category, i played with them a couple seasons ago

I would be in pretty good shape if our league was a double double league

Can I get an Armon?
ESPN Insider gives you a tool of letting you know your projected standings
Mostly knowing where you might be weak.
I’m good in everything except assists, I have a bunch of ball hogs and I’m fine with that. I’m not horrible, just projected mid-table out of ten instead of top 2-3.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
It was in the draft
There was a tab for Insiders only that had projected standings and listed all those categories, so I was able to figure out that I needed to focus on drafting rebounds, ft% and pure scoring later in the draft for example.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
hmm
I wonder if you can use it on a complete team so you can identify stuff you might be overlooking
especially the percentages because it’s not always easy to see how much someone shooting 15 times a game affects your stats
Can I get an Armon?
Its all guesswork in any case
ESPN’s projections may be no more or often less valid than anyone else’s.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
aside from unpredictable injuries
they’ve been pretty solid for 80% of the league. It’s the vets who finally break down and the rookies/young guys who break out that are hard to predict.
Can I get an Armon?
Doesn't seem to be an equivilent tool
Their tools for fantasy basketball aren’t nearly as good as they are for fantasy football probably because a lot less people play FBB.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
you think?
I play fantasy baseball, but I don’t know a lot of other people who do
#5
It's true, my v key doesn't work properly
I figure because baseball lends itself to stats so well
that fantasy baseball would be more popular than fantasy basketball. And IIRC, fantasy sports started with baseball.
Can I get an Armon?
David Lee would be boss in that league.

I could have picked him in round 1
But Wade was still on the board, I took Wade.

i bought it off of PSN Store and am playing it now, in honor of it being halloween week.
the atmosphere is a little unnerving, but the “acting” is so terrible
still on the early part of the game. i’m getting the serum to save richard, who was apparently just attacked by a giant snake
you're further in the game than I figured
how are those camera angles working for ya?
Can I get an Armon?
they are fine so far. i’m used to playing games like metal gear solid, so the cameras are no big deal. it’s the controls that are annoying
I played the director's cut of the original
I’m sure they’re basically the same.
I never finished the game. I got stuck. I was missing a gem to a door to the lab (I think). Never did find it. This was before the widespread use of strategy guides.
Can I get an Armon?
Yes.
Kings Field was also a great game.

"The Time Traveling Dad Causes the Second Atomic Bomb to be Dropped to Help His Son Pass a History Test"

SOMETIME IN THE NEAR FUTURE— College is almost impossible to get accepted into, even for the son of rich physicist Walt Kroepke. Walt knew his son needed every advantage a father could provide.
When his son kept getting questions wrong on his history exams, Walt Kroepke took matters into his own hands: being a real whiz at time travel type stuff, he decided to go back in time and make his son’s answers correct.
In the first pass through time, only one atomic bomb was dropped on the country of Japan near the end of World War 2. Unfortunately for the citizens of Nagasaki, Walt’s son mistakenly wrote that TWO bombs had been dropped, leaving a father only one choice.
Walt’s son’s incorrect history answers have led to the death of 7,831,197,924 innocent men, women, and children.

Time travel is tricky.
I wonder if Walt’s son might, in fact, change his answers in a time line constructed off of a two atomic bomb history to something else that is wrong. Fate has a way of reasserting itself. I learned that from the Final Destination movies.
Walt's dad only cares about the timeline of his present.
Alternate timeliness and wackiness created by his monkeying around in the timestreams don’t matter to him, nor the lives lost.

"Xantar The Murderous Cyclops Makes a New Best Friend"

2 weeks prior to this photograph, Senor Medrigo (notorious crime boss) approached Xantar the Murderous Cyclops with a simple offer—
Decapitate Felipe Ruiz (known ladies man, and rumoured to have romanced Senor Medrigo’s favorite mistress), bring the head to him, and Senor Medrigo will generously cover all of Xantar’s numerous gambling debts.
Xantar did what Xantar does best, and that was murder. He found the Latin playboy seducing a wealthy widow 1500 miles to the South, and quickly fulfilled his job.
During the slow drive back, Xantar realized what he had been missing all along: a friend who would just LISTEN to him. Felipe doesn’t judge, doesn’t scold, he isn’t just waiting for his turn to talk. Felipe… listens, and loves. Xantar needed that, more than he ever knew.
The stink of the rotting flesh has soaked into the carseat and Xantar’s nose, and the flies are slowly covering every square inch of the bag. But Xantar can’t sell out his new best friend to that vicious crimelord, Senor Medrigo… not after all they’ve been through.
Together, Xantar and his new best friend will make a new life together, far in the North, away from all this madness. It’s the only way.
Oh, Xantar!

He needs to get some court time sure but the D-League is a guards league and the Idaho Stampede play almost the opposite style to the Blazers. I don’t want him going down there and running amok in an up-tempo system – I’d rather he learn how to play in practice and the odd garbage time run.
Of course, I want my momo to see some good bball, so I wouldn’t be too disappointed if he went down for awhile.

It's fascinating that marriages between "double cousins" are expressly prohibited by north carolina law
As double cousins only occur when two pairs of sibling marry and have kids. So what happened that made the state of NC say damn we need to make sure we prohibit this? “We can take cousins interbreeding but double cousins breeding is genetically like siblings breeding! Just say no!”
Is it weird to anyone else that laws against cousins marrying vary so much from state to state

I don't do wins and losses because it's too easy to end up with an unbalanced amount
I’ve got the Kings as the upstart team in the West. I like their big man rotation and young duo of Evans and Cousins.
I see the Rockets, even with a limited Yao, getting back into the playoffs while the Suns fall out again.
I see the Knicks taking the up for grabs 8th spot in the East because of a weak Atlantic division.
I see the Celtics struggling quite a bit in the regular season due to their age and the grind of a long season.

what more need be said?
Ok fine, I’ll say more.
An uninterested Baron Davis and no backup PG to replace him or even a playmaker at any other position.
No depth, minimal defense.
Griffin will be a fine offensive player, but that’s not enough to get the Clips out of the basement.
Can I get an Armon?
yah, but second to last? i think they finish around 10th in the west.
Also, the Rockets are not making the playoffs. period. healthy yao or not, they suck. Hornets or Kings or someone else will sneak in there.
they were a 42 win team without Yao
Lee was a good pickup and just having Hayes in a back up role instead of starting will be huge. I think that’s worth 4-5 wins.

"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Dallas over the Fakers eh? Not the strangest thing you have predicted
Portland won’t be under 50 wins not after getting 50 in the most injury ravaged season OF ALL TIME.
The Nuggets will be worse but they won’t be a .500 team unless you’re predicting Carmelo leaves midseason.
I agree that the Grizzles will slip, but I don’t think they’ll be under 30 wins.

East reaction
Miami will be a good regular season team, but they won’t get 70, more like 65. Mike Miller, Wade and Bron already have minor injuries. I don’t think that bodes well.
It’ll be a cold day in hell before the Knicks (as currently constructed) get 47 wins. 41 wins is more like it.
I don’t think the Nets will improve quite that much.
The Bucks will be better and the Cavs will be worse than what you have listed.
Orlando will get about 60 wins again.
Atlanta will drop a few wins but they’ll be over .500 still.
Can I get an Armon?
If the New Jersey Nets obtain Carmelo Anthony, then I'd swap records with them and the New ...
York Knicks. With the Atlanta Hawks, you’re probably right that I’m too harsh on that team. I could’ve given them a couple more wins at the expense of either New Jersey or New York. As much as I love the Milwaukee Bucks, I’m down on the signing of Drew Gooden and am curious to see Scott Skiles and Corey Maggette co-exist. Regarding Cleveland, that team isn’t as terrible as bottom-feeders like Toronto or Minnesota. Lastly, I expect the Orlando Magic to dominate this season.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Do you want to register these with me?
I had a fanshot a couple of weeks ago and took ‘official’ predictions from several for comparison at the end of the season.

I deleted my post describing why Rudy might think differently about some things than US players and why US fans don't understand that when it seemed like it was a lost cause. Honestly didn't expect him to become the winner of pre-season.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Yeah, I do believe a lot of American fans took an ethnocentric view toward Rudy Fernandez ...
from a societal standpoint. Yet, that kind of cultural disconnect happens from time to time, since different countries have their own unique folkways and mores. In America, it’s not really custom for a disgruntled employee — specifically in professional sports, as the case is here — to openly ask for his release. It’s too bad Fernandez didn’t have his agent(s) push for a trade quietly in the background — which was reportedly the case with Martell Webster and Jerryd Bayless — for the overdone public backlash by the obtrusive sports media and neurotic, hysterical fans wouldn’t’ve occurred then.
It is what it is, though.

There is a huge difference between Jscot and Rudy. Rudy isn’t a little kid who is forced to be with a bunch of mean Oregon kids and Jscot didn’t make an announcement to the entire school on the first day of school that he hated it there and wanted to go home.

he would be a terrible NFL coach but a potentially good NFL Offensive Coordinator …i can see him go on the path of Bobby Petrino.
sounds like he has an out in his contract for the NFL
I’d meet BRP at the airport, not flee!! - fanfaraway
He doesn't
His contract is ironclad, he has a buyout starting at $4M this year and decreasing every year of his deal.

As bad as the CSNNW thing is
It isn’t this bad:
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/FoxCablevision-Dispute-May-nytimes-56894097.html?x=0
The feud between Cablevision and the News Corporation has already resulted in an extraordinarily long blackout of programming. Now it threatens to shut Cablevision customers out of the World Series.
The News Corporation’s Fox and local stations in the New York metropolitan area have been blacked out for more than a week in the three million homes served by Cablevision. The negotiators have dug in their heels; the two sides have not spoken to each other since Thursday afternoon.
More than just the tens of millions of dollars in payments that Cablevision makes to the News Corporation are at stake. The dispute is also about the government’s role in the battles over Americans’ access to television channels — battles that seem to be happening more often as stations envision higher fees as a substitute for declining advertising revenue. A long blackout increases the pressure on local and federal lawmakers alike.
But both companies feel that the fight is worthwhile. Cablevision says it wants the government to intervene, while the News Corporation aims to hold out for the price it believes it deserves for its popular TV shows.
With Fox set to broadcast the World Series starting on Wednesday night, a huge lever for the network, the News Corporation’s advice to Cablevision customers who do not want to switch service providers can be boiled down to three words: buy an antenna.
There is one deadline looming before then. The Federal Communications Commission has given the two companies until the close of business on Monday to provide evidence of "good faith negotiations," which is required by law in disputes over what is known as retransmission consent, or contracts that allow cable systems to carry programming on local stations.

Jerryd has cost Curtis Jerrells his roster spot on the Hornets
He was waived again, after Demps had just acquired him last week from the Spurs. He’s a pretty hectic trader (also waiving Shakur, and doing the deal for Green and Smith that might not have been necessary had they waited for an opportunity like Jerryd).

Now if only they would actually launch this year's version of Gametime
http://www.nba.com/2010/news/10/20/nba-check-in-announcement/index.html
NBA Digital today announced the launch of NBA Turnstile, the first professional sports multiplatform check-in application that will reward fans for attending and watching live games, and connect them to social media platforms such as Foursquare, Gowalla, Twitter, Facebook, and Fanvibe through the league’s digital products.
Available during the 2010-11 NBA season, NBA Turnstile will be accessible through NBA Game Time, the NBA’s mobile application that provides video highlights, scores, statistics, player information and more.
NBA Turnstile, developed in conjunction with Fanvibe, will combine virtual and location based check-ins for fans during all NBA games allowing them to compete against each other to unlock virtual badges, earn NBA prizes, and receive special discounts. The innovative application will reward fan loyalty with weekly, monthly, and season long badges, in addition to unlocking virtual content tied to special NBA events during the year, such as Christmas Day Games, NBA All-Star, and The Finals. Overall, fans will be able to access NBA Turnstile through Web sites, mobile, and select connected devices.

To get Americans to watch.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
To explain luge team relay: It’s a mix of a double, a woman single and a men single, and in the finish you have to raise up and hit a target (kind of a cloth) that opens up the start gate at the top so the next one can start. It’s okay since you get a lot of action in a short time, though only a few teams dominate (most nations have problems even having quality guys in 1 or 2 disciplines).
Biathlon mixed is 2 women and 2 men running a relay. It’s pretty good competition since a number of teams don’t have 4 good men or women for traditional relays, so e.g. countries like Sweden and Belarus and Ukraine put special effort into winning that putting their best guys on the start while some of the major countries (Norway, Germany, Russia, etc.) often have an opportunity to test an up-and-coming athlete in a major event. It’s fun. Usually it’s 2 women first followed by 2 men, though I think you could mix it in theory but that would result in traffic jams on the round.
Slopestyle looks great in videos, so I guess it would be a fun discipline.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
when skiers try to look like snowboarders, it just looks weird. Like when rollerbladers tried to do skater stuff. It is just too weird looking.
It looks weird when amateurs try it. For the pros, there’s little difference in what they can do in terms of jumps and grinds. Skiers look even more dramatic since everything is flying around on spins.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
i am biased because I was a skateboarder. I like watching some of the acrobatic ski jumping, but I think sno-park skiing looks weird. Reminds of of snow ballet or whatever that was a LONG time ago. haha

Does Patty have to get waived by today or signed by today? Like, what’s the default value?
He is signed. They have to trim down the opening roster to 15 or less today, so either Pendy or he or both get waived (or in the unlikely even, Pendy gets traded. Patty can’t be before end of December).

PURRREEEE!
http://www.bigtennetwork.com/dpp/about_us/Gus-Johnson-to-Double-Big-Ten-Network-Workload
America’s favorite play-by-play announcer, Gus Johnson, returns to the Big Ten Network for a third season, and will call 23 Big Ten men’s basketball games this winter, more than twice as many as the previous two years.
Johnson headlines a new season of basketball on the Big Ten Network that will include nearly 160 men’s and women’s basketball games and pre- and post-game shows, as well as Big Ten Basketball and Beyond and the award-winning The Journey: 2011 Big Ten Basketball.
Twenty of Johnson’s 23 assignments will be regular-season conference matchups or Big Ten Tournament games. His first conference game is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 27, when Indiana hosts Penn State at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. Johnson also will handle play-by-play responsibilities during the network’s Super Wednesday doubleheaders beginning in January, as well as selected Tuesdays and Thursdays during the conference season and all three of the network’s Big Ten Tournament games.

Responding to question about why his team had problems lining up properly vs. Bama last weekend.
http://blogs.knoxnews.com/ward/2010/10/dooley-quoted-vols-playing-german-role-in-wwii.html
“Right now we’re like the Germans in World War II. Here comes the boats, they’re coming. You have the binoculars, and it’s like, ‘Oh, my God, the invasion is coming.’ That’s what they did, they were in the bunkers. It’s coming, they call Rommel — they can’t find Rommel. (Pretending to speak into a radio.) ‘What do we do? I’m not doing anything until I get orders.’ (Pretends to look through binoculars.) ‘Have you gotten Rommel yet?’
— "All right, and the Americans were the exact opposite. We hit the beach, and we were on the wrong spot. ‘What do we do? I don’t know, but these guys are firing and we better hide over there and blow some stuff up to get up there.’ They weren’t looking for (help). That’s where we’ve got to make that transition.
— "I don’t want the German people to get upset at me. I’m not attacking them, but that’s what happened. You had one group, they weren’t worried about what the plan was and orders and all that. When the war hits, things change. You’ve got to go. You had the other group, and they go, ‘Wait a minute. They told us the invasion was way further north’ where we had the empty tanks and we were hidding Patton out. ‘We weren’t ready for this, now what do we do?’ ‘We better wait until Rommel tells us what to do.’

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Why is it weird? Did I miss something, or not factor someone in?
With no Bayless, it means we got 1 spot left, and Pendy is done for the season, in the final year of his contract… of course we waive him and just keep Patty, because… why not?
And you know me, I ain’t exactly a big Patty believer.

I think he just means it’s weird that with everything that happened, or could’ve happened, this off season, we ended up with Patty Mills on the final roster.
Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
Yep
Patty has been considered gone for a couple of months now. This is clearly not a Nate decision and I don’t think its a Cho decision…..
It makes sense from a roster depth perspective I guess, but that assumes you’d be willing to play Patty if we have an injury to Dre or AJ

And Rudy is still there.
I wanna go through the posts from earlier in summer and call out everyone who said Rudy was guaranteed not playing with us this season.
There are more than you can count
I’m stoked that I talked about Rudy all summer as a relevant player and someone who would still be here. Makes me more unique!

I kind of feel for T4L
He was the leader of the pack when it came to be sure that Rudy was gone and also was 2IC on the Bayless bandwagon, behind ULC. Now he has no Bayless and all the Rudy he can handle.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I've said before that I think he is sort of overbearing in the frontpage stuff
He was also somewhat arrogant in dismissing any conversation of Rudy’s role or how he would fit should he come back (as he has). So maybe I shouldn’t feel sorry for him.

no, he said he understood the move and Cho's logic, though he might've gone Boone.
but that Oberto would shut up if he didn’t see the court from December-April.
You are fairly upset about it, as much as one can be about the fifteenth roster spot. You said sub-Juwan, Pelton says better.

KP2 had a good assessment of the Oberto signing. If you wait until the eve of the season, your options become limited, and Oberto is enough of a pro to not become a distraction when he's not needed but play good when he is.

I would prefer a young valid option side by side with Oden long term (such as Joel Freeland, or even better), but right now that's not what the Blazers were looking for.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Besides, Oberto > Howard at least defensively, and in scoring efficiently around the rim. So it's all good.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
I've watched him with the Spurs and internationally. He's better.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
he’s been a below replacement level NBA player each of the past two years, and he’s not getting any younger. The fact that he was a very solid C in ‘07-’08 is irrelevant.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
The bad thing about Howard is that we had to use him in 73 games!
And he had a PER of 10, 7.9 in the playoffs. Oberto can still play within his career averages, which is 11. This summer he had some very good stretches, playing extensive minutes and even recording more steals and assists than turnovers. When we use him for 25-30 games, it’s all good. He understands team defense, he is at least as tall as Pendy to challenge shots, he doesn’t foul as atrociously, and he can hit shots inside and pass from the high post. That’s all we need.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
We’ll see. I don’t think he’ll kill us, but I would prefer Josh Boone, Dwayne Jones or <insert random hungary D-leaguer who can rebound and isn’t stuck in molasses here>
MPOTCP>PGOTF
Where is Josh Boone?
I think a lot of d-leaguers may have the Pendy problem of fouls, and aren’t wise vets with decision making like Oberto is (prolly).
#52
Boone has a bum knee and is out of the league
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
And he was once in the playoffs.
Maybe he would win us one more game, probably as KP2 points out at this level it doesn’t matter. Just hope we have to use Oberto intensively for just 25 games, and then maybe sporadically for 20 more over the season where he sees garbage time or 6 minutes in the 2nd and 3rd quarter.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
I would prefer a foul happy D-Leaguer who can move faster than a snail than a 36 year old who has been below replacement level each of the past two years.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
It could be worse: The Indiana Pacers are starting McBob, the Nuggets are starting Sheldon Williams, and the Sixers are starting Spencer Hawes. Wohoo.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Start maybe, I just think those situations are even worse than ours. At least we can hope to have some combo of Camby, Joel and Greg healthy for 50 games.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
there are certainly teams that are in much worse positions than the Blazers, that’s obvious.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
I don't wanna look over rosters today
That is tomorrow. Who are the Lakers 14/15th men? The Magic? Celtics?
I totally get about worrying about our backup backup big man, because with our injury history lately, there is a good shot he’ll play. So, I get worrying about Oberto.
#52
Derrick Caracter, Devin Ebanks and Theo are the Lakers 3 worst players, probably. Better than ours.
The end of Boston’s bench is god awful with Daniels, Finley, etc.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
The Wolves as likely the worst team in our division and conference have Lazar Hayward, Anthony Tolliver, Kosta Koufos and Nikola Pekovic. Then again, their starting five isn’t that good either, unlike e.g. on the Hornets where the starting 5 is great but it gets very shallow very fast from there.

I gotta complain about something.
In general, it really annoys me when a guy who used to be good but started sucking 2 years ago gets a spot like this over a young, hungry Dwayne Jones type who I believe would be much more productive.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
however, it probably isn’t a difference that shows up as more than a win (and possibly not even that), even if I’m right.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
If what Cho is thinking is the same
That a Dwayne Jones-(type) wouldn’t equal many more wins, if any, even if things go really good for him… then I think the time lost developing a young dude like Jones (is he still young? I swear, we’ve all brought up his name a million times over the years because of AK’s love of him, but I know NOTHING about the kid) over just having a vet who can prolly give the same WITHOUT the practice time spent working with him… that may be what puts it in Oberto’s favor.
Ya don’t gotta teach him the basics and then the details of the defense (I know we’re simple, but it’s still gotta have a learning curve), offense, and all that nonsense.
Someone who isn’t me needs to look into Jones’ career and see why no one likes him.
#52
Just FYO
These are his D-League stats for last year. I have to believe he is an NBA level rebounder, and I trust AK when he says that DJ is a great post defender. Would be more forward thinking to go this route IMO.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Yet somehow he hasn't got a shot for 2 full years
His last NBA season getting decent minutes (the only one he has had in fact) was reasonably productive, but not earth shattering. Perhaps there is something missing or something wrong with his attitude. I don’t know.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
It is odd
A good sized big, who can play 40 minutes a night… even against sub-par competition, 17/16 is impressive AND it’s an athletic guards league, so scoring that much despite not likely playing with good playmakers AND staying out of foul trouble despite everyone driving all day and rookie refs…
Yup. I don’t get it. How can he slip through the cracks?
#52
There's just such a world of difference between D league and NBA

We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
he's been with the Spurs
and they decided he wasn’t right. when that happens with players, I gotta think Von Wafer type attitude problems.
It's gonna take a while
He came in with a mostly-formed roster, and he isn’t likely gonna make HUGE changes.
The subtle changes he will make will take time to judge. Way too soon now, and way too soon by the end of the year.
#52
If Matthews/Roy/Rudy can handle being the backup PG guy
Or Armon, I guess… it opens up that guard logjam, gets more minutes for Rudy and easier to fit Matthews in, and we get a lottery pick (most likely) for a lottery pick that we hoped could work out and didn’t.
I think it’s at least a push, which is fine with me, and could turn into more depending on the pick.
I don’t think it hurt things, AND lottery picks are fun.
#52

The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Patty party 2.0 is here
That little Aussie battler is gonna climb up the rotation and into Nate’s heart!
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I like it for a few reasons
Bayless wasn’t a good fit with Brandon or Rudy. The Rudy/Bayless combination was truly awful whenever we saw it. Maybe he and Brandon could’ve worked it out, but he isn’t great at spacing the floor. It always looks awkward when he’s off-ball
BRP also reported that there were some serious chemistry issues, as Jerryd wanted out. I would rather have a happy, playing Rudy than a disgruntled Rudy an dBayless, like last year. I think last year’s poor early season chemistry was a big issue.
I think those all could be true
If they weren’t seeing signs that it was gonna work, I don’t mind at ALL calling it over early and getting a really nice asset like a lottery pick.
Plus, we got guards-a-plenty as it is.
#52
Or the Bobcats, with a glorious center combo of Nazr Mohammed, Kwame Brown, and DeSagana Diop.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
They are serviceable, but I wouldn’t want that as my big man platoon. He was overpaid already in Detroit, and hasn’t noticeably improved since then. With the lack of Felton and a couple of guys who are rather dependent on moods, I’m not as high on the Bobcats as last year where they had especially an incredible home stand.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Nazr is not in the same class as those other two
He put up a PER of almost 20 last year and was very effective defensively. I’d be totally comfortable with him as my starting centre, injury history not withstanding.
Can’t say that about Kwame or Diop.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I didn't watch him in recent seasons, so I ain't no expert
But he always seemed like a smart player who was tough, did what he did and didn’t try for more, made good passes, and knew how to play basketball. In a 14th man big, that’s not bad at all.
We won’t have to spend anytime teaching him what to do, don’t need to develop him, don’t need to WORRY about him.
Like Norsk says, if he’s playing Juwan Howard level minutes, we’re screwed, but he’s a tougher dude than Howard (in actual toughness, and not hacking someone every 5 minutes toughness) and better at defending bigs. He isn’t a GOOD player who you want playing a LOT, but he isn’t someone I think we’d worry about much when he’s out there.
He just won’t be a capable replacement if we have lots of injuries again. But, no one would be.
And he’s likely better than “Random 6’10” d-league big who started playing basketball in college" at playing a few minutes a game, here and there.
If you can point out non-Dwayne Jones d-league bigs that we’d be better off having… like specific ones… I mean, I don’t know them that well so maybe there are some dudes we could get that would definitely be a better player this next season. And I dunno why the great Dwayne Jones, as a legit big, still hasn’t found a NBA home (if he still hasn’t— I ain’t been following things).
More athletic, certainly. But I don’t know if most would be as intelligent or trustworthy. And I bet if we got 1 from the d-league, and really worked with him, AND he was already a smart dude, we would get more from him in the long run than Oberto… certainly. But, for this season, ya don’t gotta put a lotta effort into Oberto.
#52
Oberto was a very solid C in ‘07-’08. He’s now 3 years older, and much suckier. While he’ll play better D than Howard (it would be impossible not too), he’s much, much worse than Juwan offensively.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
Dwayne Jones not finding an NBA home perplexes me
He is just too dominant in D-League not to be a capable garbage man in the NBA. I don’t get it.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Nice thing about Oberto over a young guy
He won’t take up space in practice. You tell him once where to be, and he’ll be there. A young guy will take coaching time, even if he’s not getting many minutes.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you.
Fabricio Oberto > Jeff Pendergraph > Juwan Howard.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
I wouldn't call either of them good.
if the goal is to make a choice that won’t rock any boats in the locker and will put a solid body into the practices and for taking fouls towards the end of the quarter, Oberto is the greatest signing Cho ever made of all time as a Blazer GM of all time. But expecting him to even play adequately is a reach, let alone good.
Mills should attack him with a boomerang
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
I think they win it in 6 or 7

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
CJ Wilson and Colby Lewis are not chopped liver. As a tandem, they are about as good as Cain and Sanchez, probably a little better actually.
The clear cut pitching advantages for the Giants are Bumgarner>Hunter, Wilson>Feliz and middle relief.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
I think Wash will stick with Hunter
I also honestly believe the no-DH advantage for the Giants (which could lead to Wash having to make a tough decision on whether to pinch hit for Lee in e.g. 7th inning of a close game as well as getting Vlady into the OF) is bigger than the DH advantage for the Rangers, and they have that advantage 4 times.
Tossup series, to me.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
I was speaking specifically to Game 4.
That is the only clear pitching advantage for SF, and it could be partially negated if he goes Holland.
Even if they go Hunter, they’ll like bring in Holland like they did vs. NY.
HOMER
Yeah, I see your point.
fwiw, bullpen is a big edge to SF. Wash has shown that he doesn’t trust Naftali Feliz to pull of the “manly-man” saves that Wilson gives you. Plus, his regular season and postseason stats don’t measure up to the Beard’s.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
been meaning to ask you
Wilson is WAY outperforming his xFIP. Is that something we can count on? Seems like he always lets a runner or two on, plays with fire.
I don’t think Wilson is really a sub-2 ERA guy, but he still was 2nd among all relievers in WAR, and I do think he is a guy who focuses more when runners are on and will consistently outperform his xFIP, yes. I think his FIP is more in line with where I view his true talent level.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
xFIP is just FIP adjusting for HR/FB
looking at the past years, I’m not sure if we can rely on a 4.2% rate. 4.5 last year, 13 the year before… it’s so hard to evaluate relievers.
Even by xFIP, he’s better than Feliz. Its possible that both he and Cain purposefully pitch to the park knowing lefties have a real tough time hitting HRs at AT&T. That could explain the HR thing. I think the stranding runners deal is real with Wilson, though I could be wrong.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
I don't thikn he's inferior to Feliz at all.
He’s better. I just don’t think it’s a massive difference over the sample size of a few innings, you know?
I think its a substantial difference
and I think the trust to use the best reliever in the 8th is an advantage for the Giants also.
K/9 and BABIP columns are worth a glance, btw.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
If they win 4 games before Texas does, I think they’ll be in good shape.
Objectively, Texas is a slightly better team. Its very difficult to argue otherwise. The Giants can do it though, homefield helps since it gets Guerrero into the outfield or out of the lineup 4 times.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
what’s funny is cliff’s greatest strength is his control which leads to him never walking anybody. the giants’ lineup is so terrible and swing happy that it almost negates that.
uribe’s gonna hit a 3 run bomb cause he’ll swing at a first pitch curveball from cliffy
i could see the Giants scoring a few the first time through the lineup.
He’s just ridiculous when he brings the curve in the second time through. They don’t score from innings 3-7 I bet.
I like Tim
he’s a Husky. I like him, despite messing with you. But he doesn’t seem at the tip-top of his game, and the Rangers lineup is better than the Braves or Phillies. The Phillies should be good, but they were awful, awful, awful against Cincinnati and seemed to be off against SF.
he's faced a crummy lineup and a struggling lineup
I get that he’s still great, it just seems like he’s more hittable.
I mean, he’s not Cliff Lee, but the only time an excellent lineup in the Phils’ (they are an excellent lineup— 3 games against the Reds where they sucked doesn’t seem relevant to me) where on two weak oppo HRs and a fluky 3 run inning featuring a 2 strike HBP and a fluky sac bunt. He’s more hittable than Cliff Lee though, I’ll give you that.
MPOTCP>PGOTF

If the doctors can do the tests and clear him medically, then the player has to decide when they are ready to go out there and give 100%. Greg is clearly not there from a pain or confidence standpoint, so we give him time.

If we’re running Brandon isolation, we need shooters on the floor.
would rather Andre so that he can take advantage if the opposition only has one decent guard defender on the floor and that guy checks Roy.

I think that underestimates just how important spacing is in our late-game sets.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
I bet Keith Bogans will do as much for Chicago as Wesley Matthews does for Portland.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
I'm proud of myself for predicting Ronnie Brewer would be a backup 3 rather than a ...
starting 2 in Chicago. Here’s the RealGM report.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
i wonder what the minute spread will be there for Bogans, and Brewer (once he’s really healthy)
I’d meet BRP at the airport, not flee!! - fanfaraway
I hope Brewer gets 25-30 minutes
He was my last round flyer in fantasy.

That's pretty much a given

Simmons and House wanted Matthews on the Bulls, but Simmons agreed finally that it was a good pickup for the Blazers

It's cos its not sexy 'getting lots of steals and making awesome plays' defense like, say, Batum's
He is a solid defender.

by southern oregon on Oct 25, 2010 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions
Harris should be
But he wasn’t last season. You underrate Dre’s intelligence on the defensive end. It covers up a lot of his physical limitations. Of course he is gonna get burned by the quick little PG’s, that doesn’t make him a bad defender any more than Chris Paul is a bad defender because he can’t deal with taller/more physical PG’s.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Really?
If you believe in defensive metrics at all then that is wildly inaccurate.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
None are totally reliable and there is no catch all
But the sum total of the different metrics out there is certainly indicative of performance IMO.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I just don't think enough data of importance goes into these metrics to make them useful.
I also suspect that are error-ladden even more than most advanced metrics and, thus, are harder to make comparative statements with.
I love dMult
That is my favourite one atm. Even though that adjusts for almost everything to try and isolate and quantify a players defensive efficacy, you still can’t trust it 100%. Context is so important for defense, and you can’t adjust for that easily.
I agree with you to a point I guess, but I do think what is out there is fairly indicative, just not determinative.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Maybe for the 2012 sloan analytics conference I'll do a paper investigating this.
I’ve been looking for something worth putting teeth into.
You should
Figuring out how to make defensive metrics better has been the next step for a couple of years now. Its a tough one.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Yeah, one might need better data than is available for the public to really measure defensive effectiveness.
But a piece that sufficiently shows the drawbacks of current metrics is bound to lead to a better metric in theory. Then an NBA team can hire me to enact my vision on their super secret data set. Ergo, that’d rule.
I'd love to be an NBA statkeeper
Especially one that had to observe and report the more complex stuff the teams are interested in. Even just boxscores would be OK, though.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Being a statkeeper would be fun.
Being the analyst and having a team of statkeepers that I could train to look for certain things would be epic.
You can be the analyst
I’ll be one of your minions. You don’t even have to pay me that well…..
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
: )
Works for me. Travel costs are included right? Its only one wee small flight…..teehee.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
haha
For sure. I think we may need to charter a jet of our own just to get the team to each destination so we’ll just swing out a bit to grab you.
Perfect
It’ll only cost an extra tank of gas or two
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Once they've approved paying for the jet, the gas should be easy to get.
But with how long that flight will be, we will probably do training and reviews on the plane.
I just decided that I am going to win the Nobel prize in basketball analytics. Shortly after they invent it to recognize the enormity of my contribution to the field.
is this because there are no good defensive stats?

partly. The defensive stats we do have paint the picture of Dre as a very solid defender and Mathews as average to below average. That was his rookie year— he should improve— but there’s no evidence for him as a defensive stud.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
based on what i saw last year, Mathews has the tools to be a good on the ball defender, while Dre doesn’t anymore… not to say Dre is bad a defense, he is what I would qualify as a crafty veteran help defender and is good at post-up defense on other PG’s… I think Matthews will continue to improve his defense, while Dre’s is headed in the other direction due to age
I'm a grown man stuck inside the mind of a 3 year old
by The Arkitect on Oct 25, 2010 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions
the reason Dre's good defensively
is cuz he’s a boss at defending the 2-5 compared to other points. He’s great on switches.
He did a good job on Kobe in the playoffs, can you visualize Dre guarding him?
by southern oregon on Oct 25, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions
That is a redundant argument
And he didn’t do a good job, he got roasted. I don’t know why people think that is an argument for Wesley’s defense.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
although, to be fair
Kobe was hitting tough shots and playing very, very well. I don’t think Nic would’ve done much good against him either.
I lack an opinion of Wes’ defense. Rather than cobble together stuff from last year, we’ll get to actually watch and evaluate starting tomorrow. It won’t take long to see what he’s all about.
It may be that Kobe was playing out of his mind
But nothing I saw in that series told me that Wesley was some kind of lockdown guy. If he is, or has developed into that, then great. But that series being used as an example? I don’t get it.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
That's what I think
He looks so much DIFFERENT than I remember him looking in my mind’s eye, and it made me realize I didn’t know anything about Matthews.
He’s beefier, moves better, looks like he can actually dribble at an NBA SG level, is throwing lobs… I don’t know this player at all, so I wanna see him.
I just can’t think it’s reasonable that he’s THAT good, and just a year ago wasn’t drafted. Or why I didn’t notice how beefy his body is, since I tend to notice that sort of thing even if someone is just walking across the street.
So, I am skeptical but kinda eager to see what he’s about. Definitely more optimistic than I was before, when I just felt he’d be a solid bench player who won’t kill us but will be way overpaid.
#52
I've gone from totally down on the signing
To intrigued but still dubious as to why he was given so much.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
it is completely unbelievable that all of a sudden this kind of player just emerged from undrafted land. Normally undrafted guys are awesome at ONE thing, but ok at the rest. He SEEMS to be well rounded. It is remarkable…and tough to believe it until I see it.
Espcially seeing as the reason he went undrafted from what I've read is that he was too small to be an NBA 3 and didn't have the handl;es for an NBA 2
Now we’re giving him minutes at the 1?? I know Roy will handle the ball etc but it Wesley is bringing it up or shows some moves off the dribble then wow I’ll be confused as to why everyone whiffed on him.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
He did an average job on Kobe in the playoffs. Kobe was just as efficient as he normally is. He was not held in check whatsoever.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
Kobe was far more efficient than usual
He shot .523 while scoring 32 PPG for gawds sake.

KGW games streamed for FREE by Blazers
http://www.iamatrailblazersfan.com/PressReleaseDisplay/tabid/297/ItemID/1992/Default.aspx
The Trail Blazers will stream all 16 KGW broadcasts live online, in high-definition, throughout the 2010-11 season, starting with the season opener tomorrow night against the Phoenix Suns at 7 p.m.
The Trail Blazers, who are the only NBA team that plan to stream games this year, streamed 15 KGW broadcasts last season, charging a small fee.
“We are extremely excited to facilitate the expansion of our viewing audience via a free stream this season," Trail Blazers Chief Operating Officer Sarah Mensah said. "We take pride in staying on the cutting edge of new technology and in connecting with our fans in new ways."
The 16 KGW games throughout the season include three matchups with Phoenix, three against the defending champion L.A. Lakers and two against in-division rivals Utah and Oklahoma City.
Fans can sign up by visiting trailblazers.com. An FAQ is available on the website that details the technical specifications required to receive the broadcast stream.
The stream will feature television commentators Mike Barrett and Mike Rice, as well as studio analysts Terry Porter and Michael Holton, and studio host Adam Bjaranson.
Pre-game (30 minutes prior to tip-off) and post-game shows (30 minutes following the game) will be included in the stream.
Streamed games will be available exclusively to fans in the team’s broadcast territory in Oregon and Southwest Washington (within a 150-mile radius from Portland). Fans outside of the Trail Blazers’ 150-mile broadcast territory can also see games online as part of the NBA League Pass Broadband package. Details are available at NBA.com.

What I do know that his eyebrows are very comparable to Bayless’.
by ireallylikejerrydbayless on Oct 25, 2010 3:33 PM PDT up reply actions
He is Bayless 2.0
More eyebrows, more athleticism, more speed, more defensy and more combo guardy/WTH position does he play…..y.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
The same skill
We just haven’t seen it. He could drive and draw fouls pretty well. The reason I like him is because he is good defensively and has a nicer looking stroke from 3, despite the results so far.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I can't say he's a better shooter yet.
Nothing I’ve seen suggests that, though I haven’t seen much.
Bayless came in as one of the best foul-drawers in the league as a rookie. He could get to the rim. As athletic as Elliot is, I hear nothing about that from him. He’s all raw. Maybe he works out, but no more combo guards.
Elliot is gone after this season…not a Cho type
I’d meet BRP at the airport, not flee!! - fanfaraway

I just looked at their respective college stats and they are remarkably similar. EWill actually drew fouls at a higher rate in his Soph year than JBay did at Arizona.
I just became slightly higher on EWill than I was 2 minutes ago, which isn’t saying much.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
it's not fair for me to criticize Elliot without seeing him.
I just don’t know if he can get to the basket consistently. If so, he might be a successful combo guard.
The scouting report is that he can but he can only finish with his left hand
He is certainly a project. Just happens to be one I think is worthwhile.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
in the few times that i saw him, the one thing that bug me about him (as with Jerryd) was they were hesitant when they got the ball
I’d meet BRP at the airport, not flee!! - fanfaraway
I don't mind really good combo guards
Like Brandon.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
he's not a combo guard as I see it.
He has a clear position defensively and is definitely a shooting guard. That’s like calling Kobe a combo guard.
I don't really see him as a combo guard
It was more a comment that he often doesn’t look like a sg on offense. I’d crap my pants if he started running off more screens without the ball in his hands.
We should bring in more scrub big men; they make good curse fodder.
The more natural decision-making is what I like about Armon. He just needs a lot of shooting work so defenders respect him (Ben pointed out Lawson sagged off to the paint. That won’t work).
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
if he can shoot, he's a good fit with Brandon.
that’s the key. Is he Nic or Jerryd in terms of learning a jump shot.
Jerryd's range always seemed limited to 20 or so feet
From 3, he always seems like he is pushing it, looks un-natural.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
In that regard
I see Armon as Jerryd, with broen mechanics and a slow release that need fixing, whereas Elliot has a nice compact looking action that I think is closer to a finished product.
Pretty much the only area in which he is closer to a finished product, but SIL.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Indeed
But he already had a serviceable shot his rookie year. Armon looks worse than Dre from 3.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I believe that improving your shooting is generally easier than anything else.
All Armon needs is that. He already plays defense and passes, doesn’t have potential to. I’ll take that over guy that has potential for everything but has little guaranteed.
If Armon develops a 3pt shot (just hitting at over 35% say)
Then I feel like he can be our starter in a couple of years. If we are aiming for a championship then I think we make a big upgrade at PG and it is a moot point.
Armon’s distance shooting is the only thing holding me back from being bullish on him as a prospect.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Elliot is extremely dependent on his left hand. He's not good dribbling right.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Indeed
Lots of work to do. I like what he’s working with though.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
DeRozan is extremely athletic but can’t seem to put that athleticism to use in real-game situations. So far I fear Elliot will have similar issues.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
As e.g. ideally compared to BRoy who is very athletic but also has the handles and shot to go everywhere he wants and be a threat from everywhere. Just being able to dunk with a free lane won’t be enough.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
I think the difference maker is defense
He can be a truly great PG defender IMO. If that happens and he develops his 3pt shot, he is worth keeping.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I don’t see Elliot as a 1 at all. That’s like saying Hayward will play SG ;-)
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
He is a tweener at present
I think he has to follow the Bayless/Lou Williams path, but if he can do it with better defense and distance shooting….
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I don't want Bayless or Lou!
We just traded Jerryd away because combo guard didn’t work next to Brandon.
If Wesley is playing next to Brandon for large stretches this year
We sure ain’t worried about having people play out of position….
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I don't know how much we'll end up seeing that.

I don't see what the problem with the Shiancoe call was
He’s going to the ground with the point of the ball clearly below his hands, then it hits the ground and pops up into his hands. I thought it was one of the easiest calls of the night.

the Vegas lines tend to me very similar to KenPom’s. If you were a betting man trying to make money on college hoops, the way to go would be to scour the web for injury news and that kind of inside info for the small leagues that Vegas won’t be paying as much attention to. I’ve noticed there are a few lines every season in the Ivy league that are free money.

Have you read this book
It talks about how pro gamblers do make a lot of $ off of small leagues.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0306811561/ref=oss_product
The Odds
For sports gamblers in Las Vegas, nobody cares who wins; it’s by how much that matters. In The Odds, Chad Millman follows three professional gamblers through a year of college basketball, where meticulous research, betting discipline, and instinct clash with addiction, and no one relaxes until they’ve lost it all.
The three colorful gamblers Millman expertly portrays are a high-rolling career “wiseguy,” a slacker wannabe, and a bookmaker who sets the lines on games (for example, Iowa over Indiana by 4-1/2 points, meaning if you bet on Iowa, you win only if Iowa wins by five points or more). The idea behind the betting line is to lure bets (hopefully, losing ones) and make a profit for his casino from the action, but more importantly to stay ahead of those who pounce on a weak line like hungry wolves. Millman provides the answer to what makes these wiseguys tick: “While the casual bettor weighs common sense and financial realities with every bet, the wiseguy pushes those aside… [his] battle isn’t with what makes sense; his battle is with anyone who gets in the way of making his bet a euphoric experience.”

MPOTCP>PGOTF

He will probably also always be a high TO guy. But he will also average 10+ assists so long as he has decent pieces around him and I think he will be NBA all-defense calibre on the other side of the ball.

I get the statistical comparison but attitude and maturity are huge factors when it comes to having a productive NBA career.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
Thus far, Steve Francis appears to be a good comparison for John Wall.
Then again, I’m not sure how much attitude — good, bad, or indifferent — will factor into Wall’s career.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
I only make the point in this instance because Francis was such an egotistical guy
He would never concede anything or adjust for the good of his team. Wall strikes me as the opposite of that. If anything, Arenas is more Francis-like, 3pt shooting notwithstanding.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I still think Wall will be a terrific talent, especially once he is surrounded by better talent but even now
He had some really strong numbers in pre-season. His outside shot is a work in progress, but it’s not unlikely that he can soon lead the league in steals and fast breaks ;)

Simmons insinuated it was already an issue early on in his college career, then got better and now somehow resurfaced. Sounded like there could have been shouting matches or similar stuff.

Wasn't it Indiana that tried Mike Dunleavy, Jr. at shooting guard?
Amazingly enough, it worked pretty darn well for the 2007-2008 season.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
Dunleavy is pretty mobile though. Hayward is laterally stuck in mud. He’d look worse than Rudy trying to get past most SGs.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
If he refines his off-ball movement, then he may end up all right at the 2.
I, however, am neither high or low on Gordon Hayward, but somewhere in the middle.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
“In high school, I didn’t start off the best, but I worked my way to the top by the end,” Turner explained. “In college, I didn’t start off the best and worked my way to the top by the end.”
Mhm, apparently Simmons was not the only one hearing those rumors. Interesting link.

Turner's fall has been pretty epic, yet he still hasn't even played his first NBA game
Even so, the people who were saying Brandon Roy was Turner’s floor as a prospect might want to think again, too.
The only member of the Elliot Williams bandwagon
I remember reading some Philly fans who were sure there was no way Turner could be worse than Roy
They seemed to forget that Roy is a damn good shooter with no weak spots on the floor while Turner can’t really shoot to save himself at present.

Okay, I’m done. So there’s this bar in South Beach. And tomorrow, if the Heat lose to the Celtics? They’ll pay your tab, up to $25 . So if the team that’s been together four months, without their designated shooter, with two players having had injuries in preseason, lose to the defending Eastern Conference champions featuring four Hall of Famers and an all-world defense, you get your beers for free. Note to owners: Do not let hobos find out about this deal. It’s a great promotional tactic, but if the Heat win, are they going to keep this up until the Heat lose? Have we mentioned they’re in Boston tomorrow night? Because they’re in Boston tomorrow night.

this is where I point out that I called him the LeBron of MLS, not the LeBron of soccer.

i’m ready for the 2014 cup, aka the one where mwanga channels an in-prime ronaldo and the us stuns brazil in the final
And the games are on at normal times
Since Brazil is only four hours ahead of the Pacific time zone.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yeah, that’ll be nice. And ,as for Cloudy’s comment, I’m jealous of your optimism. English fans tend to be super negative until a month or two before the WC starts. It’s nice to be able to root for both countries, and it’ll be much easier in 2014 since the odds of USA and England being in the same group again has to be Infinitesimal.
Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
I want them to at least make the quarters next time
Unless they draw a tough team in the round of 16, like say Brazil or Spain.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Depends on the region
For the US its basically a formality since most of the rest of the teams are not anywhere close to our league.
In Europe, it can be hard depending on which group you draw.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
In the past, the last round of qualifying in our region has been a group of 6 teams— you play everyone home and away— and then the top 3 qualify (and sometimes the 4th team gets to playoff for a possible spot if FIFA decides it).
they are changing the format slightly for the next cycle though.
basically you play a bunch of matches against teams from your region (our region is called CONCACAF—the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football) and as long as we don’t do worse than Mexico and 2 other teams (e.g. Costa Rica and Honduras), we qualify.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
It does suck that we won't go to Mexico
Sure we always lost but those games were fun.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

world series odds:
Rangers -135
Giants +115
Rangers 8:1 to sweep
Giants 18:1 to sweep
MVP odds: Cliff Lee 11/2; Josh Hamilton 6/1; Buster Posey 8/1; Tim Lincecum 8:1; Cody Ross 11/1; Brian Wilson 30/1
-
Wilson might be a good value there. Brian actually led all players in the NLCS in Win Probability Added.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
i think buster is actually worse value than ross. he hasn’t hit the ball real well other than game 4
Ross was a waiver wire pickup
he very well may continue to be the Babe, but there’s also a chance that he becomes Cody Ross. Past success by fringe guys doesn’t mean this fringe guy will continue his hot streak.
Wilson’s easily the best value on that board imo. I’d rather bet Hamilton 6/1 than Cody 11/1 easily.
Huff 18/1, Torres 25/1, F. Sanchez 20/1, J. Sanchez 20/1, Uribe 16/1, Cain 16/1, Burrell 20/1
CJ Wilson 22/1, Andrus 18/1, Kinsler 14/1, Young 12/1, Feliz 35/1, Cruz 11/1, Vlad 12/1
Field 12/1
Andrus, Kinsler and Vlad aren’t bad values there.

I guess he would
I occasionally see reference to him as a SF or a 3/4 even and I honestly cannot ever remember them playing him at 3. I’ve seen them play him at 5, but never at 3. That I recall.
At Nova he was the designated non-guard
So he played all 3 front court positions.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
At Villanova, Dante Cunningham split time with Will Sheridan at center for two seasons ...
(i.e., 2005-2006 & 2006-2007) and started over Antonio Pena at center for two seasons (i.e., 2007-2008 & 2008-2009).
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
In Jay Wright's 4-outside/1-inside motion offense, Dante Cunningham was strictly a 5.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
The New Jersey Nets with Trenton Hassell was proof positive that playing someone at the 3 who can't ...
hit a 3 is a dumb, dumb idea.
http://www.82games.com/0910/09NJN8.HTM#onoff
The one small forward for the Nets last season who could stick it from long-distance efficiently was Jarvis Hayes, who had decent +/- numbers on offense. Unfortunately for Hayes, however, his defense is atrocious; hence, non-factors on offense such as Hassell, Chris Douglas-Roberts, and Bobby Simmons all got some playing time at that position, too.

b. Marginal utility of fat is falling for Jack; marginal utility of lean is falling for his wife.
c. Marginal utility of lean is negative for Jack; marginal utility of fat is negative for his wife.

If Jack can’t eat fat, then marginal utility for eating fat is negative. Likewise, marginal utility of lean is negative for his wife.
A is your answer, I do believe.
MPOTCP>PGOTF
^ right
If Jack can’t eat fat, any fat his wife eats makes his marginal utility for eating it negative. And visa versa.

I think the simplistic breakdown is:
offense: Rangers, big
defense: Push
Rotation: Rangers, slightly
Bullpen: Giants
but the Rangers offensive edge is definitely bigger than the Giants bullpen edge. The Giants have to bank on home field advantage, grit, scrap and “it.”
MPOTCP>PGOTF
They can do some things and scrap
And jinx the Ranger D into making key errors.

it does with Greg's unreliability thus far.
Camby’s not the type of player who can post up weaker big men, Greg is. So, by having Camby play with Roy dominating the ball, and then bringing in Greg with weaker opposition and basing the offense around him, I think you get a better impact.
Ginobili came off the bench. I have no problem with Greg doing so as well. Plus, it helps with the foul trouble issue.
i disagree
id rather put our best big on the opposing team’s best bigs. greg’s defense matters more to the team than his offense.
