Putting Junk Behind You Drawer - 10.20.2010

So I don't think this is working out... but it's not you; it's me...

Star-divide

Word of the Junk: misanthropes

The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts.  Its purpose was simple from its infancy; a place where people could come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor.  The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts.  We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club... and people have really become a family here.

So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. Everyone else is doing the same, so you will find the JD an eclectic place where you might read something interesting, pointless, profound, or just funny within a few moments. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:

  1. Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized.
  2. Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated
  3. Remember everything you write is visible publicly
  4. Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.

As you try and navigate through the junk drawer, remember that you can use 'Z' on your keypad to mark a comment as read and move to the next one and hitting shift-A will mark all comments as read.

Junk because you were going to anyways, h8rs. But remember that when things seem bad they are never as bad as they seem. Like, have you noticed how today's date is 1020 2010? Noticing the small things is one of the keys to a good life and a good junk. And remember, the NBA season is less than a week away.

That's tough.

Although I’m unemployed myself, it’s not too bad due to family circumstances allowing me a certain set of responsibilities that’s coupled with room and board. For most people, however, being unemployed is a drag and makes life difficult, which can be a rough go.

Poor baby ...
To illustrate that sometimes unpleasant interaction, James took the unusual step of retweeting some hateful Twitter messages to his 900,000 followers on Tuesday afternoon. On Wednesday, the Miami Heat star said he did it to show people what he deals with on a daily basis.
“I just want you guys to see it also,” James said after the Heat’s practice Wednesday afternoon. “To see what type of words that are said toward me and towards us as professional athletes. Everybody thinks it is a bed of roses and it’s not.”

Netflix released 3Q numbers today.
“In fact, by every measure, we are now primarily a streaming company that also offers DVD-by-mail," said Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder and CEO.

Hacking Netflix.

by Timmay! on Oct 20, 2010 4:40 PM PDT reply actions

hopefully that encourages them to put newer movies out to steam.

I’m streaming kid shows right now for my daughter. And I’ve had the same two dvds for about a month now. And one of them I haven’t even watched yet.

by hoodieNation on Oct 20, 2010 4:56 PM PDT up reply actions

There was definitely some luck involved along with the ingenuity.

It was also very smart to not include the words delivery or mail in their company name. They were very forward thinking.

by Timmay! on Oct 20, 2010 5:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Hastings calculated on that, along with DVDs being much cheaper to ship than VHS enabling his business model

Amazon bought a company named Lovefilm. Always feels like I’m getting erotic movies in the mail.

There definitely is some weirdness in their attachment to Patty

Either both KP and Cho are a big fan of his, or someone above them is. So you’ve made a reasonable assumption.

Perhaps PA is concerned that he’d lose out on the next Aaron Brooks?

Wait 6 more months and it'll start feeling dated

There are dual core 1.5Ghz phones on the horizon, and triple-core may be on the way. With the triple core, there would be two fast cores that can be shut down, and one slower core that will stay on at all times and would actively load balance the other two cores, so the phone is immediately responsive to any needs.

They have a transformer that plugs right into a normal socket so they are much easier than the old style low voltage stuff which required a hard wired transformer.

They are touch activated and you have a choice of lighting color, including one that mimics incandescent bulbs. The wire that goes from the wall wart to the light is very thin, and you could possibly run it in behind some base board if you have it.

I used one of these in a walk-in closet that had no light

I had an outlet about 18" from the closet so I got an electrical cord and the above type fixture (with built in switch)and hid the wire in the gap under the floor molding and into the closet. Then attached the fixture directly to the wall. Works pretty well

I think the difference is mindset

I see targets as really important. Keller’s production has largely come from TDs, and as we’ve seen the last two weeks, they’re far from a guarantee. Witten is still getting a lot of looks in the offense, which I like. Now, saying that, I have Keller and I hope that he’ll continue to score TDs.

I don't know if comparing an amateur baseball game to the NBA is fair

I place coaches harping on officials in a different category.

I think there are very few players who can get a positive result, even down the road, from staying to argue rather than play defense— certainly much smaller than the number that do so.

However, I admit my analogy sucked.

it's definitely hard to understand the strategy at first.

at least it was for me.

One key thing I’d note is that it’s a lot easier for a hitter to hit an opposite-throwing pitcher. So righties hit lefties, and lefties hit righties. That’s why they bring in a left-handed reliever to face a right-handed hitter, and vice versa.

by Cablinasian on Oct 20, 2010 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow.

So I mentioned this a while back: I’m watching a TV series on Netflix, and out of nowhere one episode will have a missing dialogue track, so you can’t hear voices.

They finally fixed them… all but one. I finally decided to have some fun with it, checking at least once a day (which dings them to pay for the whole episode), and clicking “report problem” afterward. Still, over a week later, no fix.

And today? Instead of fixing it, they switch that one episode to “DVD only” and left it at that.

Harry Bosch: "Everybody counts....or nobody counts."

by 92wastheyear on Oct 20, 2010 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Here it is.

It looks like they do indeed source from higher quality to avoid double-encoding off DVD sources:

Our best sources are electronically delivered mezzanine files, or high quality D5 tapes, and the highest bitrate encodes of these sources really look as good or better than DVDs. Digibeta tape sources can also generate good encodes, but some sources just are not as good, regardless of the bitrate used for encoding. We also encode from DV tape and even on occasion from DVDs. We get HD sources for many titles, even if we only have the rights to stream SD. The HD sources permit a better SD encode than working from SD soures.

he'll definitely have lower raw stats

The decline in usage will end up in more threes and better FT%, so that might make up for the drop in points.

by jstbeachy on Oct 20, 2010 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions

ugh, he's certainly got some points. From a business perspective though this really gets tricky.

Do you keep a guy who can’t give you anything this year and holds you back from doing anything to shore up his position just because he’s a good “character” guy? On the other hand he will still get paid right? And get paid quite a bit more than the average American who I believe earns around $46,000 per year. Also even if he’s released that won’t preclude him from earning a spot on another team or even the Trailblazers once again, and really he’s a guy who wouldn’t have earned such a spot if it weren’t for all the injuries the team had last year. So many sides to look at, I haven’t come to an easy decision myself about the whole thing, and my decision doesn’t have any impact. Would not like to be management on that one.

I made so much bread this summer it was stupid. It used to freak me out because the process can take quite awhile and if you screw it up you might not know right away. There is quite a bit of art to it, and a lot of finesse to do the really good stuff. I’m still in awe of good baguettes. I just don’t think you can make them at home, and I rarely say that about food.

I'm a Greg Oden honk, yeah.

Even when I was still a Sonic fan, I liked Oden more than Kevin Durant.

I've tried to make them, but pro bakeries have special ovens that really help with the whole thing.

They use steam ovens which you can mimic at home, but it’s not quite the same. Also making em takes at least 24 hours and it’s some of the most delicate dough I’ve ever seen. Also the flour you use really has a lot to do with the way the bread turns out, not just the type of flour but the technique with how it’s processed, where it’s produced and the fineness to which it’s milled.

Switching weekly, 9 stat categories, and results carry over

So if you win your matchup 5 to 4, you don’t get one point but it carries over as 5 wins 4 losses for the rest of the season. Then gets added up. I think division winners automatically qualify for playoffs and then it gets filled up.

the stuff is on reserve in the library, which means we can check it out for two hours and it has to stay in the library, but since i live so far from campus it’s a real pain. I’ll find a way to get them done. I might go to campus early tomorrow, before my class starts, and browse the readings and then write the papers. They’re supposed to be very casual, really just summarizing what the author is trying to say and why it’s relevant to our class, I just can’t do it since I don’t have the books and I don’t want to buy three 40 dollar books when I already bought the three books for her class that were originally required.

I looked for it for about a half hour and couldn’t find it. The school’s computer system was changed over the summer and nothing saves in the same place anymore. :/ It’s all good cause I’m nearly done again.. It’s easier the second time around.. but that was still 4 hours of work down the drain. The bike I’m using is my dads old one. The chain is my age and I’m actually amazed that it handled 2 months of me riding uphill on it heh. I’ll just go and buy one tomorrow or something.

I wouldn’t be too concerned with the character of a role player either. As long as there is an established leader and wins+money to keep a player in check, things shouldn’t fly too far off of the track.

yeah, there’s quite a few NorCal natives living in the NW, plus a lot of people jump on the bandwagon of any successful West coast team (except for LA I suppose), plus Tim Lincecum is a NW guy… I think those are all factors.

Outside of the Yanks/Red Sox/Cubs/Cardinals/Phillies, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Giants have the next largest number of fans worldwide.

I wonder if MLB baseball could work in Omaha, NE.

It couldn’t be any worse than the disaster of poor fan support occurring right now in Tampa Bay, FL.

The only issue is TD Ameritrade Park isn’t being built to fit a larger capacity, as that’d’ve been the smart move if the objective was to someday bring a professional sports team to a small, yet potentially viable market. Heck, if football has worked this long in Green Bay, then baseball could work in Omaha.

My team

Russell Westbrook
Gilbert Arenas
Rashard Lewis
Al Harrington
Dwight Howard
Andrew Bogut
J.R. Smith
Ben Gordon
Marvin Williams
Spencer Hawes
Ersan Ilyasova

I mean, they’re all starting level players. I always say “forget about it” with turnovers, and my FTs will be rough with Dwight, so I hope Ben Gordon is playing a lot and the others can help too.

by Norsktroll on Oct 21, 2010 7:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Don't like the Arenas, Lewis and Smith picks but I guess those three could single handedly win you 3's in a given week.

Love getting Gordon, Hawes and Ilyasova (assuming you got them in pretty late rounds). Marvin Williams could end up being a good pick depending on how Atlanta use him.

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 2:38 AM PDT up reply actions

I got all 6 kinda late... especially Ben Gordon, who I wondered if he was injured and I just didn't know it

He was on the board a long time, especially since he’s on a bad team with nobody and he will hopefully be healthy.

Arenas is a wild card who can give big time production… he’ll get steals, 3s, FTs…

Lewis is 3s obviously, and the random game he gives more.

JR Smith I wasn’t crazy about either… I was at a friends house and distracted the whole draft, and it was my turn and I didn’t realize it so I got a dude I’ve had before. He won’t ever break out fully, but he’ll get a lot of different stats and have huge nights.

#52

by Mortimer on Oct 21, 2010 2:41 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm guessing no one likes Gordon cos he was hurt/sucked last year and is playing with Stuckey/Hamilton/Bynum

I think he will be a damn good fantasy player this year. Probably not for me though. Still haven’t got my strategy set yet though.

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 2:43 AM PDT up reply actions

I prolly got too many 3s now

Maybe.

Lemme check my draft order… drafting #9 in a 20 team league sucked, because it took so long between picks. I think I took Westbrook second, since he gets a lot of assists and everything (but a bad percentage and turnovers).

#52

by Mortimer on Oct 21, 2010 2:45 AM PDT up reply actions

Here is my draft order

1. (9) Dwight Howard C
2. (28) Russell Westbrook PG
3. (45) Andrew Bogut C
4. (64) Gilbert Arenas PG,SG
5. (81) Rashard Lewis SF,PF
6. (100) Al Harrington PF,C
7. (117) J.R. Smith SG,SF
8. (136) Ben Gordon SG
9. (153) Marvin Williams SF,PF
10. (172) Spencer Hawes C
11. (189) Ersan Ilyasova SF,PF

Arenas looks high, but ya gotta consider how many teams there are of course.

#52

by Mortimer on Oct 21, 2010 2:46 AM PDT up reply actions

A good center rotation, with a few scorers, and then some pick ups who just gimme whatever stat I find I need most

Has been my recipe in the past. I didn’t win the JD league last year, though. I won other leagues 2 years in a row, but they were mostly dummies.

#52

by Mortimer on Oct 21, 2010 2:48 AM PDT up reply actions

Is Hawes gonna start?

Who else is a center for Philly? Speights? He’s a tiny center.

#52

by Mortimer on Oct 21, 2010 2:49 AM PDT up reply actions

Hawes will certainly get minutes

Think he’ll be behind Speights though…

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 3:00 AM PDT up reply actions

Dwight Howard might only be the true stretch

Since his FT% and turnovers might knock him out of the top 10 for the entire NBA.

I think the rest of my players have a good chance to finish above or at where I drafted them (if Arenas is healthy, he should be at least #64 in fantasy).

#52

by Mortimer on Oct 21, 2010 2:51 AM PDT up reply actions

turnovers tend to even out. They usually end up depending on the schedule.

by medmelon on Oct 21, 2010 3:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Was it that bad?

I remember it wasn’t top 10 for sure… but what he does well, he dominates, and I always just boot turnovers anyways. His FTs will hurt though.

I reached a bit with Holiday and Teague in the autodraft, but i think they’ll have good seasons. The thing is I only have like 1 big man. Beasley and Villanueva are not exactly rebounding PFs.

I agree

Lotsa 3s from each, Jamison rebounds… I have a feeling Jamison will be hurt more than usual because the season is really for nothing, so minor injuries become injuries a vet will sit out for… and Bargs will have some awful 2 for 14 shooting nights.

Esmerelda the Ghost hears the front door click, and the familiar float of her husband is a sound she has heard countless times before… but for reasons she can’t quite explain, she doesn’t turn to acknowledge him. She pretends to not know he is home, feeling his dead stare from behind.

But you do seem quick to label a relationship a lame duck when someone gripes in the JD. I agree in principle but gotta be careful you don’t assume a relationship is lame at the first sign of difficulty. There is a lot that goes into a relationship and it ain’t all fun is all I’m saying.

I did that with GB because he has expressed such sentiments over a long period of time

I remember you not liking that, but he wasn’t happy and hadn’t been for a while.

Every relationship has problems… staying in one for no reason other than you’ve been together is silly. That happens a LOT, me included. There are normal problems, and then there are ones that pretty much mean the entire relationship is flawed.

I’ve had plenty of loooong relationships, with mixed results. Relationships are perfectly good and I always support them. But if someone is sticking around out of habit or they don’t even really like the person… I say, end it!

Well I'm screwed then!

Didn’t do a whole bunch of dating before I was 18….or at least it was veeeery informal ; )

It don't mean you're screwed at all

I know

Just trying to bring some levity. I think it totally depends on the person and generally hate arguments that suggest you shouldn’t do things till an arbitrary age or until you have had x number of previous experiences to base your decision on. Not that that’s your bag at all, I just tend to react/not be able to keep my mouth shut when I see stuff of this nature.

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 4:44 AM PDT up reply actions

Just so you know, I wasn't really talking about the GB thing

I didn’t know you weighed in on that TBH and I was fairly out of the loop anyway. There have been a couple of times I’ve just heard you say something like ’you’re young, just get rid of him/her’ in response to an ‘ugh, my bf/gf is so annoying when they do x/because of [insert personality trait]’ type comment. I agree people need to get out of toxic or boring relationships sooner because its just a waste of your life but when people have a whine and a moan it doesn’t always mean they’re unhappy or don’t like the person they’re with.

That’s my 2 cents – I think you are doing a good service just so long as it’s aimed at the right people.

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 4:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I doubt I've done that to anyone here where it wasn't correct.

I mean, who has relationships they’ve talked about here?

Porgy? GB? The one dude who was just buying a ring to shut his GF up? I mean…

I don’t think I ever took normal griping and turned it into “oh dump that dude/skirt”.

#52

by Mortimer on Oct 21, 2010 4:34 AM PDT up reply actions

Porgy is one where everyone over-reacted a bit

I dunno dude, I probably don’t have the experience like you or GB to really talk about relationships. The comment up there probably comes off preachy and I’m sorry for that. Just seems like you don’t really think young people should get tied down, which isn’t always true IMO.

As I said, its only a couple of comments so I’m not saying you’re a constant downer or anything (you’re the ray of sunshine around this place!) and I certainly don’t have heaps of examples. More of a feeling based on limited sample size I guess.

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 4:41 AM PDT up reply actions

I think I am very supportive of everyone's real relationships, and will be there for my pals

But my perception may be incorrect.

I think the right young people can definitely be happy for a verrrry long time, and it’s no biggie. Everyone is different. What I don’t like to see, a pet peeve of mine if you will, is when young people are in long relationships with someone who actively makes them unhappy.

And that’s a lot of relationships, sadly. The good ones should be celebrated and encouraged!

My young friends who have gotten engaged/married in the past, ever since my friends started doing that in college… I have always urged them to wait, except for a few instances. Just because there’s no harm in being “sure” with such a big decision.

I still love you MB and I know you got a good thang going!

I'm thinking about proposing the following trade to Ark

Mine: Nash and JRich
Ark: Tyreke and Kevin Love

Thoughts?

by medmelon on Oct 21, 2010 5:08 AM PDT reply actions

I don't know if I'd do it if I were him

Love is a fantasy beast. Then again it is Steve Nash.

Its a pretty balanced trade.

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 5:11 AM PDT up reply actions

If Ark needs assists and especially 3s bad then it might work

problem is Nash and J Rich are at the peak of their value while Evans and Love could both improve quite a bit cause they’re still young. And on the flip side Nash’s age could finally catch up with him.

I wouldn’t do it if I were Ark.

Can I get an Armon?

by Magnum on Oct 21, 2010 5:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I think I'm the same

Who knows with Nash though – he’s pretty ageless and might even go back to scoring more with Amare gone.

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 5:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Who knows

His commitment to staying in shape in terms of diet and work ethic are best in the league. I say he has a couple left in him and he might go longer than that.

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 5:30 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah, that’s what I was thinking too regarding Amare, even more for JRich. I was between offering JRich or Gallinari, thought the first would appeal him more.

by medmelon on Oct 21, 2010 5:28 AM PDT up reply actions

JRich could have a nice year

Depends on how they integrate Turk though. I definitely don’t think Ark would do it for Gallinari and Nash, but what would I know?

by MadBlaze on Oct 21, 2010 5:31 AM PDT up reply actions

shoulda started with the lower offer and then countered with a slightly better one, but one you can still live with

or an offer you KNOW he wouldn’t take so that a decent offer looks amazing by comparison

Can I get an Armon?

by Magnum on Oct 21, 2010 5:34 AM PDT up reply actions

it's hard to decide in a vacuum

Does Ark need 3 point shooters that bad? Can you afford to give up assists? Does he want 2 Suns players?

Personally, I think K. Love will end the year as the best fantasy player out of that bunch. I would do it if I were you and had someone to help with assists.

Can I get an Armon?

by Magnum on Oct 21, 2010 5:12 AM PDT up reply actions

the thing is, i’ve drafted 3 more pgs. And need some help on the rebounding front.
And he has DeMarcus, AK, Biedrins, and Okur.
It’s tough to put Nash on the block, but I need a decent big man. Brook Lopez by himself won’t cut it. And i don’t want to punt rebs that much.

by medmelon on Oct 21, 2010 5:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Am I having a brain meltdown or is there an AK other than AK47 in the NBA?

You do need another big man, but Ark’s big man combo isn’t that great without K Love. Okur will be out for a while, Cousins will be inconsistent especially early in the year and Biedrins is a nice 4th big but not much else. If Cousins immediately starts destroying fools it could be a different story though…

Can I get an Armon?

by Magnum on Oct 21, 2010 5:28 AM PDT up reply actions

yep, missed the 47. lol at “destroying fools”.

by medmelon on Oct 21, 2010 5:30 AM PDT up reply actions

since you need boards more than a 20, 5, 5 guy

I would target K love and pick someone besides Evans from his squad to trade for

Can I get an Armon?

Mhm, I think I see a pretty creative out-of-the-box option for the first month

After then, it fluctuates a lot anyway on the waiver wire.

Alternative would be to upgrade my guard crops to get more assists.

Done. I don't like it: Shelden Williams. But with everyone out, he'll start at PF for the Nuggets.

He’s averaging 29 minutes, 9.9 points, 8.8 boards, 1.3 steals, 1.3 blocks in pre-season. I take that.
My guard options were not that great, will observe how this develops the first few weeks.

I see that Deanna Favre is using her husband's amusing indiscretions to shamelessly peddle her new book.

Here’s the story.

This, by the way, is the money quote that caused me to cackle like the soulless heathen I am: “I can tell you that faith, I’m a woman of faith,” Deanna Favre said. “And faith has gotten me through many difficult struggles. It will get me through this one.”

Ugh, maybe it’s just me, but I can’t stand either one of them; they deserve each other. Yet, clods throughout the Midwest — and all across the U.S. — will slobber up this insipid tripe, so more power to the Favre’s marketing machine.

Hehe, yeah. There's a lot of injuries going around, and the Yahoo tool doesn't have them yet until next week or so.

As a public service, some guys who still should be out a while and aren’t really worth owning and definitely not worth starting yet:

Perkins (February)
West (injured, 10 game suspension)
McGuire (Bobcats)
Boozer (December, though of course he’s quite valuable)
Jamision (knee, questionable for start of season)
Beaubois (foot, November, still in boot)
Andersen (knee, December)
K-Mart (knee, January or later)
Harrington (foot, questionable for start of season)
Jerebko (achilles, could miss most of season)
White (December)
Amundson (December)
Udoh (December)
Rush (5 game suspension)
Bynum (late November)
Hobson (out for season)
Maggette (doubtful for start of season)
Redd (knee, out until at least all-star break)
Flynn (hip, out until at least end of November)
Azubuike (knee, out until at least December)
Childress (questionable for start of season)
Oden, Joel, Pendergraph, duh (one site says Oden out until at least mid-December)
Dalembert (out until at least mid-November. My fail)
Evans (1 game suspension)
Ed Davis (out until at least mid-November)
Okur (questionable for start of season)
Josh Howard (out for start of regular season)
