I Hate This JD (with a poll about hate) - October 13th-14th Two-aught-Ten
So what's up with all the hating going on?
word of the day: idolita 1,212,6 "I have only words to play with"
The daily Junk Drawer (JD) fanpost is the place for true off-topic conversation and people's random thoughts. Its purpose was simple from its infancy; a place where people could come and chat about all of the "whatevers" that didn't fit with the rest of the site and even be loose in terms of byplay and humor. The goal was to foster community...to let people who wanted to get to know each other outside of what they could discern from the strictly basketball posts. We've had happy JD's, sad ones, drawers that looked like a sharing circle, drawers that resembled open mic night at the comedy club... and people have really become a family here.
So if you have a one-off thought, consider posting it here. Everyone else is doing the same, so you will find the JD an eclectic place where you might read something interesting, pointless, profound, or just funny within a few moments. The rules about importance and significance of the topic are suspended in each JD but keep some of these basic rules in mind:
- Be mindful that every image posted slows down the JD, so use discretion in how many you post (you can also link to images you want to share so that they will not overwhelm the JD). When you do post images, put something in the subject line of the comment so that the image can be minimized.
- Ad hominem attacks and swearing will never be tolerated
- Remember everything you write is visible publicly
- Don't use the JD call out or talk about users from other BEdge threads.
As you try and navigate through the junk drawer, remember that you can use 'Z' on your keypad to mark a comment as read and move to the next one and hitting shift-A will mark all comments as read.
First, everyone's hating on the Blazers. Next, we got media guys hating on blogging guys about supposedly hating on Brandon Roy. Finally, PG91 is being a total h8r to me for no good reason!
What are your thoughts on all this hating? In recent junk, some of us talked about the NBA players we hated the most. Why do we hate any NBA players and what does it take for our fanness to turn into hatred. Is it enough when a player is good and not on your team to actually hate them or do they have to do something else? Is on-court hating different then off-court hating?

But for the record
I only hate the haters. I’m not down on the team this season. I think they are gonna be great. I think everything we are hearing now is just an emotional hangover from last season. It can’t be that bad again…probably.

at the game the other night I had to sit in front of a group of people that were asking where Karl Malone and John Stockton were
and they also mentioned that Arvydas Sabonis was still a free agent though they didn’t know what team he played for. Also one of them mentioned how even though he never watches the Jersey Shore, he’s heard enough of the jokes about them that he finally gets the jokes, and to him it was all really funny. I hated listening to them.

I had my meeting with my business partner today after work, and he acted like a creep. I hated that.
Said he’d be willing to go to mediation to get to an equitable agreement for dissolving the partnership. Over a thousand dollars? Wow, that was pretty ridiculous. Can someone make a claim on future earnings of a company they are part owner of while saying that they cannot commit to the regular working aspect of the company as they first agreed on? Pretty lame.

That sucks
When I set up my company (2 member LLC), the attorney set up a buyout system I really like. I forget the name for it, but it is kind of a 2 way system that keeps either party from getting screwed over. It says you can’t ask for a buyout of more than you are willing to make. For example, if the company is owned 50/50, and you want me to buy you out, you can’t demand $500 without being willing to buy me out for the same amount (instead, obviously). I’m not sure if I made that very clear, but I liked the wording.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
that's an interesting take on it. In our situation I am 55% owner, my fiancee is 10% and the partner I've asked leave is 35%, and I know he can't offer us 65% of the value of the company.
We are set up as an SCorp, so ownership is shown as stock holdings. I’m not sure but I think if worse comes to worse, we as majority owners can just decide to dissolve the company and offer him his percentage of the existing assets. Then we could just start another one. I’m trying not to do that though because we are friends, but still if he’s not willing to work for it, I shouldn’t give him value that reflects potential earnings if he’s not willing to work there anymore right?

that's another consideration. I have also concieved all elements of the intellectual property that the company uses. The recipes, the menu, the names of our food, the artwork and fonts we use.
He provided one third of start up costs, and worked a little under half the time. So if we were to break it up based on that, his total in could amount to less than ten percent.

It's tough, but it sounds like if he isn't willing to be bought out for the cost of his share of the assets
You may have to punch your friend in the face. Or dissolve the company.

Sounds like a win/win for you
But other than that it sounds like it kind of blows for everyone.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
I had hoped that someone who was willing to participate a total of zero amount for the second half of our market season would not try and hold on to something he showed little effort for or interest in as time wore on.
So I’m hoping he kind of stews on it and realizes this may not be worth the fight. If he wants arbitration, my fiancee works at a law firm and we have free legal counsel. Or, I can dissolve the company. Or I can dilute his ownership percentage. Or maybe we can just vote him out and offer him his percentage of our current earnings. There was never a guarantee of getting our money back after all. I think I’m holding all of the cards, but told him I didn’t want to “do him dirty” so I guess we’ll see. I think there are ways for him to get out with a whole lot less than what I’ve offered him.

There's probably no reason for him to expect income on his shares
Depending on how you set up the company, of course.
Still on the Rex bandwagon.
one thing that kills me too is while we were buying our equipment he said, "we should just call this stuff a wash, we can't expect this money back."
and now it’s not enough for him to get his money back? But yeah, we don’t have a quarterly dividend or anything like that. We set it up that way because we, as owners, could take draws on corporate income without incurring employee taxes, and paying into SS and FICA. It’s so we could avoid double taxation right off the bat. The other thing is that because of our structure we aren’t required to file proof of stock ownership until our first annual meeting of shareholders, so as far as the Secretary of State is concerned his certificates don’t exist.

When we were just in Hawaii
We bought an original oil painting. We certainly had no expectation of doing such a thing. We thought we might get a print if we loved something, and it wasn’t too expensive.
My wife and I walked into a gallery, and we both really liked this painting. The woman who ran the gallery had painted most of the works there, so we assumed it was hers. She came over and started talking to us about this piece, and she got very excited. It had been painted by her 18 year old son. He had only sold one painting before, and they were asking very little for it. We ended up buying it, and her son came by the gallery, barefoot, and shy as hell. He seemed really humbled that we’d want to buy his painting. It was fun.

Yeah that miniseries is a must. It'll basically set the tone for the whole series.
It probably won’t be quite as impactful now that you’ve seen 33, but it’s still well put together.

I got pretty 'meh' about BG towards the end
but felt I needed to keep watching just cause I’d already invested so much time.
POTENTIAL SPOILERS
i started disliking the baltar story. Boy adama and his wife were kinda annoying. Other than that, I still liked it. I guess Starbuck’s stalker cylon was not really interesting. I still don’t really understand what happened to her. What was she?
BSG SPOILERS HERE
They’ve never provided a full answer, but the running theory was that Starbuck returned as a guiding spirit, to help them reach their destination (Provided by the same deity who gave us virtual Baltar and Six). She’s the one who put the final coordinates into the FTL system for the last jump. I was very unhappy with the last 45 minutes of the series, but accept they had trouble deciding on how to end it. I’d rather Starbuck have been revealed Tigh’s daughter, and the final cylon who had been resurrected via an unknown ship. The choice of Ellen as the last cylon was a huge letdown for me, she was one of my least favorite characters.
I didn’t enjoy the season 4 Baltar storyline either, but kind of ignored it. I found Leobin (the stalker) to be a more interesting and layered character than I expected, and the mutiny storyline was really well done.
SPOILERS (not really)
I just got annoyed and bored with all the mystic crap, to the point that I felt like that stuff started to overwhelm the things I did like about the show (tightly structured plots, a deep and complex fictional world, well-executed action sequences, constant intrigue surrounding true identities). It especially didn’t help that the writers obviously had no idea how to tie up all the loose ends they made.
BSG SPOILERS HERE
it really felt like Starbuck was supposed to be a cylon. Did the writers just out-think themselves…I guess?
I don’t really remember the last 45 minutes, strangely. In fact, I don’t remember the ending at all. I may need to see it again. Did everyone just keep looking around for a planet to live on? And why not live on the one that led them to earth, where Baltar kept dreaming of the baby?
HUGE BSG SPOILERS (replying to both of you here)
Sammy, I agree. I think they out-thought themselves and didn’t know how to close things out. They took a very easy way out of all the storylines in the final episode by assigning solutions to an unknown force.
Ash, at the end, they find the new earth, and will give up all their technology, in one of the more crazy leaps taken by a writer in the last 10 years of TV. And of course, the very end, where they show the virtual Baltar and Six on modern-day Earth to watch their history start all over again.
We’re going to start a new round of BSG soon over here. We really did enjoy it, and even the last episode was very well done, despite my unhappiness with the plot. The Roslin and Adama scenes were outstanding.
I tried too. Didn't get into it.

ESPN can't even hide the final score from the bottom scroll when watching a game replay
I never could understand why these things are so tough. Maybe they’re encouraging you not to use a DVR and to watch live.
I may not have watched a replay last season. If they fixed it finally, yay!
One of my recent favorite examples was ESPN Classic. The game was Blazers/Celtics, and I didn’t know which game it was, so I figured I could enjoy it all over again. Then, at the bottom of the screen:
Playing now: Blazers vs Celtics
Featuring: Larry Bird’s game-winning buzzer beater.
Thanks ESPN.
Hahaha
I just remember watching a replay, and figuring they’d be dumb enough to show the score at the bottom, and I was dreading the scores coming up and then I realized they never showed the Blazer game (the way I was covering it, I could see when it was done).
The next time the NBA scores came up, I watched to see if I was right, and yup… at least that game, whenever it was, they removed the score. Huzzah!
I haaaate when replays of classic games reveal the score in the info.

Amy’s is all organic so probably the reason for the price.

Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
I’ll have to look next time.
maybe they have more than one version of enchiladas, I was thinking they were somewhere under 3.
I do that a lot (not look at price) with what might be a one time or seldom purchased food item, I’m just looking for something I might like.

all because it cost a buck more.
Think about it, for one more buck you could be in enchilada heaven, but nooooo. You’re eating cardboard and cheese whiz because you looked at the price.

in eugene twitter war news:
@supwitchugirl aka the “i love my ducks” guys are beefing with @duckssportsnow via twitter because DSN is selling the domain names ilovemyducks.com and ilovemyducks.net. Also @theuosportsdude is involved. Who is this hacky bill simmons wannabe kid that writes about the u of o and is best known for
maliciously making fun of an underage Oregon Duck fan
as @jayjones (writer for DSN) points out. you can view where all this oddness started here (if anyone cares, it starts with a tweet from 7 hours ago).
this is all kind of screwy from the DSN perspective but it’s gotta be expected when you make it (relatively) big as swcg has with their videos. It seems like they should have already bought one of those domain names (i know that’s not their name but that’s what their famous for). meanwhile of course the uosportsdude got involved, all he cares about is page views.

the studies that you reference about the time of day not mattering, do they also mean how soon before you go to bed? A lot of studies show that you shouldn’t eat within a certain chunk of time before bed because you’re body will be working too hard to digest the food and you’re not very likely to sleep well.

Being sick is weird!
I am sick too. It ain’t the end of the world, but feeling crappy is crappy.
OH, I took a nap around 7ish to 9ish, I forget, and I had one of these dreams where you are awake but paralyzed. I ain’t had one since 8th grade. Sooooooo freaky.
My houseguest was home by then, and when I woke up and couldn’t move, I kept hearing a “whooooOooooOOooah” type noise, and I told myself “ok, you’re awake, and you’re in that mid-stage where you wake up and can’t move because of the stage of sleep you’re in or whatever”. I could tell he was standing behind where I was on the couch, watching what I fell asleep to on my laptop, because the way the light was cast over the room.
I was trying to move or say something with the hope that he’d say or do something, and it’d snap me out of my frozen state. It was very uncomfortable and weird, but I knew what was happening so it was okay.
The LAST time that happened, in 8th grade, was also when I was sick with something and I was asleep and woke up and couldn’t move and my waking-dream had a giant flash go on outside and I told myself it was an atom bomb and everyone here was dead, and that’s why I couldn’t move, and being dead wasn’t that bad.
#52
In my awake-frozen-dream I had tonight
I was on my couch (where I actually was, of course), and I kept telling myself the shadow behind me was my friend, but the dream kept invading and the “whoooooooOOooOOOah” noise was really loud and I kept waiting for the shadow to grab my neck to strangle me while I couldn’t fight back.
#52
I just have violent dreams
I knew it was a dream though, so I controlled it. I used to have lucid dreams a lot, but not so much anymore, sadly.
I asked my friend if I said anything during it, because I was trying to yell, and to move, and he said my hand went up a little bit and stayed in the air for about 30 seconds, but he didn’t wanna bug me because he thought I was sleeping.
#52
I’ve had those lucid dreams often, they give me a weird buzz when I’m fully awake.
I have this one where I go through the heart of a tornado.
Actually the tornado passes over me, but I live.
It scared me to death the first time. It keeps occurring so it’s not too bad, actually kinda awesome. Time and space distort a little bit. It’s still a little scary cause I have to get to a safe place or I will die, and usually I’m trying to save some people that are slowing me down. But every time the tornado goes right over me. And it’s not a reoccurring in the sense of place (different place each time). But when I see the tornado, I know what’s going to happen.

After everything I've read the past few days about the Brandon Roy, Nate McMillan, and whatnot, I wonder ...
what people’s reaction would be if Paul Allen canned “Sarge” and ponied up like $5 million per season to have this Idaho native — as well as former NBA Coach of the Year Award winner — lead the Portland Trail Blazers.
Also, to appease Allen’s infatuation with the Emerald City, this guy could even fill out his staff with old-timers who’ve got recent Seattle connections like Bob Hill, Bob Weiss, and Gordon Chiesa.

by LukeBabbittFTW on Oct 14, 2010 4:19 AM PDT up reply actions
If you're anti-Miller, then staying with Nate McMillan is your safe bet.
On a side note, I assume that Brandon Roy wouldn’t be fond of playing for the above pictured guy due to what’d be an increase in off-ball movement and, moreover, team-oriented style of play on offense.
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
I'm not anti-miller any more
I’m just not pro-Miller
I do like that Roy put his foot down today and told folks how it is going to be this year.

by LukeBabbittFTW on Oct 14, 2010 4:26 AM PDT up reply actions
Regarding Brandon Roy, it should be pretty clear to everyone at this point that Andre Miller ...
is a poor stylistic fit next to #7. Oh, and with regards to future coaching candidates, going after someone who preaches heavy amounts of flex cuts, off-ball movement, constant motion, and a fast or even medium pace isn’t in the cards.
I, on the other hand, be more focused on hiring someone who’ll demand effort out of the guys on defense, since it’s one area that Roy and everyone else could improve upon with better teaching.
Also, rather than do a total 180° turn when altering the scheme on offense, the new coach would just need to make it power-oriented — specifically with high pick-and-roll and side screen-rolls plays in lieu of the pick-and-pop — and, most importantly, can develop a hopefully healthy Greg Oden into a premier offensive weapon.
I, too, would like to get a power-oriented 3 skilled at cutting off the ball and slashing with the ball. The prime example of that is Andre Iguodala, who’d potentially work well in Portland alongside Roy if there was a new coach (e.g., Mike Fraetllo) and an off guard at the 1 (e.g., Kirk Hinrich).
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)
A new coach is at least a year out and only if the Blazers don't get out of the 1st round
It’s a tired argument. Folks have been talking about replacing Nate since Cheeks was the coach.
I used to go by tominhawaii. My real name is still Tom.
by LukeBabbittFTW on Oct 14, 2010 4:52 AM PDT up reply actions
Oddly enough, Mo Cheeks is a certifiably god-awful offensive coach. Nate McMillan, ...
however, has his downfall on offense not being a matter of efficiency or jumbled sets like Cheeks. Instead, the missing component with McMillan is him not calling enough plays for interior players and, moreover, what appears to be a small playbook that leads to poor in-game coaching and consequent trouble during a long playoff series
"Some things you can't unsee, bro." (The League)

I'm most interested in how gender ambiguity is rarely discussed in any substantial way.
In American society, we hear the voices from within the LGBT (i.e., lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered) community, but rarely will anybody — including supposed progressives like hardcore feminists, as noted here when the topic was broached between a certain someone and myself — touch the subject of gender ambiguity.
Oh, and from a basketball perspective, I’m still curious as to how things with Baylor’s Brittney Griner will play out over time. So far, nothing has come of the rumors — since Griner hasn’t yet been subjected to a gender verification test that I’m aware of — however, I do envision the possibility of a Caster Semenya esque hullabaloo bubbling to the surface if Griner ever gets involved in international competition.
Lastly, as an atheist, I feel gender ambiguity in countless human beings across the world is something that help debunk belief systems like the three major Abrahamic religions.

Go Blazers! Secure the Win!
This week's Pac-10 lines
Oregon, UCLA, Arizona St. and Stanford are all off this week, so its a short list.
Favored team on left, home team in caps.
USC (-2.5) vs. California. O/U: 52.5
Arizona (-24) vs. WASHINGTON STATE. O/U: 62.
WASHINGTON (-1) vs. Oregon State. O/U: 60
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
The bookies think a LOT of James Rodgers
I would make OSU a slight favorite, maybe in the 3-5 point range myself. They don’t seem to ever blow out anyone, their 3 wins have all been by less than 7.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I don't know that it necessarily means anything quite yet.
five games is a small sample, particularly when they’ve faced four good teams.
James is great, but Riley’s scheme doesn’t depend on any given receiver and Katz has shown the ability to spread the ball around.
Now, the Beavs do struggle with running QBs, and they’re coming off a big win… so I think it will be close. But I bet they win.
We'll see if Locker even bothers to run this week
Yes I know he had a cold and all that but he’s hardly tried much in any game this year.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
he's been running when open, and made some huge plays that way, especially against USC.
That kind of guy bugs the OSU scheme.
Esp. because they lack depth
If you look at BOTH OSU’s losses, their D just got worn up by the end of the game.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I disagree that the issues were on defense.
The main problem was that they played the #1 and #3 defenses and couldn’t sustain possession, so the defense was on the field nearly the entire game. Any defense is getting tired in that situation.
Except Oregon's :-)
But then again lack of ball control is in our plans.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
But they still outscored Ohio State in the second half
Albeit not by as much as they normally do.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
doesn’t Washington have a pretty good home-field? The bookies might be saying OSU is 2-3 points better even w/o Rodgers.
Not this year
They’ve already dropped 2 home games this season, one was granted to a top tier team but the other was to ASU.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Historically UW has been a very good home team
But not even the best home crowd can make up for a bad team.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
And they are in a very strong league
They’re probably a solid bowl team in almost any of the other big 6 conferences.
There isn’t a whole lot of difference talent-wise between 8 of the 10 Pac-10 teams. Oregon is slightly above everyone and WSU below.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Yeah, they do well at home.
I must think more of OSU and less of UW than the books; OSU’s losses were on the road to undefeated teams,
Excluding their games against OSU
OSU’s opponents so far this year are something like 21-3.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Its too bad they couldn't take one of those two against BSU/TCU
Because I think they would then have a decent shot at a BCS game if not the Rose.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

I have no clue or opinion on it, but since no one else replied:
He was supposed to be a plantation owner. Everything else (including kept slaves) is assumed.
this is part of it too
why did they get rid of Colonel Reb?
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/20/us/20mascot.html
It is part of a longstanding plan to recast the university’s image, still tarnished by its reputation for racial strife in the 1960s, to signal that it is more tolerant and diverse. Confederate battle flags were discouraged from football games years ago, and "Dixie" is no longer the unofficial fight song.
and: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Meredith
If you’re opposed to efforts to get rid of a Confederate soldier mascot at a school which rioted over a black student being admitted, what exactly is the implication?
I don't know if anyone said they are against changing the mascot

Is Colonel Sanders a racist icon now?
I don’t know of any racist stereotypes that involve a white suit.
I lived in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida over a 4 year period and spent a summer in rural Georgia and I heard the n-word more times in a weekend in Oregon than I did the entire time in the south.
Colonel Reb was most likely based off a black man. I figure he had to go for the “Reb” part because it imparts the Civil War.

That is ludicrous
That’s taking a big leap. I understand why they dropped the mascot just to avoid any confusion or implied racism. It’s not the Confederate flag, it’s a man or woman in a white suit.
But to say that someone likes the mascot or dresses as the mascot is a racist is bigotry.
Billy Idol was a rebel, so was James Dean, are they racist too now?

by LukeBabbittFTW on Oct 14, 2010 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions
that wiki page
Wasn’t clear on the exact origination, but it said it is possible that the mascot is a plantation owner:
Two years later, Colonel Rebel appeared for the first time as an illustration in the university yearbook.4 This illustration was perhaps drawn by the art editor for the yearbook that year, Billy Hix.5 Billy Hix often drew his depictions of the Colonel as a plantation owner in an ante-bellum plantation setting.6
Let's just make the colors red, white and blue racist while we are at it, because they're used in the Confederate flag.
The logo was a southern gentleman. That is it. He had “Reb” in his name and that’s why it had to go. Even making “Reb” racist is a stretch. They dropped it to avoid controversy, not to make an old white man in a white suit a racist icon. People are taking liberties with what they are considering racist and the need to pull their head out of their butts.
I used to go by tominhawaii. My real name is still Tom.
by LukeBabbittFTW on Oct 14, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions
perception is reality
Most people see an old southern white dude in a fancy suit, and they can help but assume he is a plantation owner.
I do see the irony. It is stereotyping, for sure, but it is likely not work the negative PR for the school. It is a loosing battle.
I got no problem with the school dropping him
Boss Hogg wore all white too. I think Gregory Peck wore a white suit in To Kill a Mockingbird. I get honestly offended when folks just assume someone from the south is racist.

my brother’s wife has a sticker on her car, and uses the “it’s what i grew up with” excuse. still waiting to hear a reasonable explanation for someone displaying that garbage.
Bazinga!
And to prove how junk the claim that it is about southern heritage
Georgia didn’t have the confederate flag on its state flag until after the civil rights movement began in earnest. Guess they didn’t feel threatened before then.
Its still a huge issue btw, has taken down 2 governors, 1 D and 1 R.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
There are folks who see it as a symbol of State’s Rights, etc, but in my opinion (which to be fair isn’t based on much experience), most people who display it and tell you that are racist dbags. You don’t just see it in the South— driving through rural Arizona, I saw the flag a few times. I’ll tell you what though, when I drove by “Reb’s Coffee Shop,” with a giant Confederate flag outside, I was definitely not going to stop.
There was a business in Portland
That started displaying the confederate flag. That business died real quick because of that.

The fanpost is about Andre, but on the graphs, I need to hunt for Andre’s name. Having his name in red, or with a different background on that rectangle, would be handy. Rut roh GB, from the Sun
The striker defied Alex Ferguson by claiming the boss was wrong to suggest an ankle injury had kept him out of action.
After England drew 0-0 with Montenegro on Tuesday, Rooney insisted: “I’ve had no problems with my ankle all season.”
And when asked why Fergie had said he did, the hitman replied: “Don’t know.”
That is only fuelling concerns talks over a new five-year deal will fall flat.
Out-of-form Rooney has missed United’s last two games following allegations he slept with a prostitute.

I don't believe it btw
There are maybe 1 or 2 clubs in the world that could afford Rooney’s transfer price. I think its just typical media over-exaggeration in the UK.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
yeah,. I think so too. He’s one of the most expensive players in the world and, even if he were trying to leave United (which, I agree, I don’t think he is. This article is making a mountain out of a molehole) I don’t think many teams could handle it.

England should have a winter break for their players. Dump the League Cup to make room, then use those dates to play four extra games during the fall and spring.
agreed. The fact that we’re always injured/sore/exhausted during the world competitions makes this strikingly clear. There have been talks about lessening the load for some time now but nothing has come of it and I’m afraid nothing will until the FA staff changes.

NBA TV brought on their "secret scout" about the Blazers.
Says Portland is crazy defensive inside when healthy. Speaks highly of Joel and Greg. Says you need to rebound and run against Portland to beat the bigs downcourt. Use ball movement and energy against their half-court defense, and force Portland’s D to move side-to-side.
I guess the “push Roy to halfcourt on an ISO” just isn’t considered a secret anymore.
Official predictions by the NBA TV guys
Playoffs are likely, despite more injuries, unlikely to have home court advantage, unlikely to progress beyond the first round, but everyone is interested in following the Blazers all year. But one of the analysts was Rick Fox, so take it as you wish.
That would be a fair prediction if we don't get Joel or Greg back
If we get just Joel, and everyone else stays healthy, we could get to round 2. If we also get Greg, and everyone else is healthy, I won’t put a limit on how high we can go.

Haha is the PS3 really this bad? I don't have one so I can't say.
I have other devices to watch Netflix on, but no PS3.
The hardware is very nice, but the software/firmware and its version of the Xbox Live online service has some serious flaws that especially seem to go on the nerves of people who don’t use it all the time. Microsoft also made a good decision about what is free on Xbox Live and what comes at a cost, whereas Sony always struggled with that balance trying to get more for the hardware while keeping the online service free which didn’t really work and inhibited the growth and features of it.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Interesting.
I think I have 4 or 5 devices in the house that do Netflix now, not counting the laptop. I can appreciate the PS3 offers the updated functionality, but I expect the existing equipment to retrofit with all the same features in the next few months, so it’s not really a buy factor for me.
Funny enough, I’m no longer using my xbox for netflix either. Too much power usage.

how does the scoring work? that's a huge detail
for example, when i played years ago, you could have anyone in the league on your team, but each player cost a certain number of points, and you had a point limit. for example, Brad Miller was awesome because he was cheap but put up a ton of rebounds.
if it’s a draft league, it’s gonna be a lot like football.

Except that stat hogs (cough, Stat Bo, cough) are much more valuable in FBB than FFB

Monta Ellis and Steph Curry last year had the triple advantage of a bad team, a banged up team (ie huge minutes) and a fast paced team.
Which is why Yahoo has Steph Curry as a projected first round pick
In FBB.

Last year e.g. Ersan Ilyasova was a good late pick for me in one or two leagues
I knew from watching him in Europe that he’s kind of like Rashard Lewis, but he went very late. Or Wesley Matthews. Someone already mentioned that players from slow teams tend to put up less raw stats like rebounds or scoring points, so that’s something to watch out for.
Also in that league it wasn’t that much of a problem since the roster spots were fairly flexible, but players who are eligible for e.g. PF and C or PG and SG can be a bit more valuable since you can use them alongside another strong player on a position they don’t play all the time in the real NBA.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
Like in FFB this year
A good example of a sleeper would be Peyton Hillis, Browns RB.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
cool, i'm in that one too.
i find it makes it MORE enjoyable, because you have a reason to watch other teams.
i don’t usually like watching any team but the PTB, so fantasy helps.
Bazinga!
first level of advice: make use of the yahoo rankings, and adjust according to your sense of who will have a good year— but the yahoo rankings do a lot of ground work for you.
2nd level of advice: don’t worry about building a balanced team on draft day— build your team’s strength in given categories— ie if you draft Dwight Howard in round 1, some people move away from drafting rebounders/shotblockers later on, but I prefer to build on that strength. You can always work on balance later via trades.
And think about players that can play multiple positions
E.,g. a lot of PFs are listed as PFs/Cs so you don’t have to worry about drafting as many Cs since PF is a much deeper position in the NBA than C.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Sarah, my biggest suggestion
is to continue to strive after what you wrote – not losing enjoyment in watching the Blazers just because you don’t have the entire team on your FBB team.
This year is only the second in nearly 20 years that I won’t be competing in FBB. I really enjoy it, but moving back here to Oregon is giving me the excuse to take a year off from the league that I started back in the early 90’s. I am looking forward to the break.
How do I do that?

How to assign a co-manager isn't hard.
It’s an option in the edit team window. But you have to know someone willing to do it. Co-managers can do most of the things the owner can do and sometimes it’s helpful to have a second person not only to handle the duties of a fantasy team but to go over strategies.
And, yes, what you said ^here.

Since you mentioned it, I don't have a team, and I've co-managered in the past.

Yeah I was kinda going to avoid fantasy sports this season.
I always get into the draft but never sustain my energy enough to see it through all season. So I think only a co-manager (or getting a co-manager of my own) would work for me.
On another note, 20 teams is just way too many! I hate how deep you have to go into the “talent” pool.
spes est dum anima est
Ditto for me on all points
Except the co-manager thing. Cab and I co-managed last year (he did a great job of taking the lead though). I figured I’d rather focus on watching the Blazers this year. I like to watch other teams specifically in relation to how it helps the Blazers, more than how it helps my fantasy team.
If I was doing it again though, I'd definitely want a co-manager, because you're right, it is easier
I’d check my mail, and Cab would already have ideas waiting in my inbox. Talk about easy for me!
Yeah.... ^ This is a requirement :)

I totally called her last year.
I wish we could make a keeper league. We’d get into the extra level. But I really enjoy the draft part of fantasy. I actually did a bunch of mock drafts just to play around.
spes est dum anima est
I’m prepping for my first ever keeper draft this Sunday, and we’re doing it auction style which should be intense.
That will be cool.
I did a couple auction style mock drafts. Those are fun. I can’t decide yet if it’s better to overpay and stockup on a couple top tier players and fill the gaps with whoever drops cheap or wait for other teams to do that and pick up the good deals that they don’t have the money for.
spes est dum anima est
Any good online references I should check out?

I use Yahoo a lot.
Just exploring their fantasy basketball area gives you access to lots of player lists and mock drafts and more lists. Especially if you were to end up going it alone without a co-manager (and probably no matter what) doing a couple of mock drafts is a good idea to help you see what to expect.

If my workload picks up significantly over the winter, I might have to hire a co-manager too. I’ll drop out of one of my ESPN leagues though where I barely knew anybody. Coincidentally that was my best one last year.

I don’t think its a good idea to overpay for the top guys— if you can get 1-2 of them at or below market value, great, otherwise go for the bargains imo.
One strategy I’ve learned is to nominate guys you don’t want early to get people to spend money on guys you wouldn’t take anyway.
cool I started doing that late in my last mock draft.

ESPN: LBJ, classified as hamstring tightness. May practice Friday.
Wade has a strained hamstring. They’re not rushing him.
You’d already know this if you were on the Heat Index instead of BE. What’s wrong with you?
Hat of ass.
"I think I killed off all the centers and now all the centers want to play the European-style basketball," O’Neal said before watching the Celtics beat the Knicks 104-101 in Stoudemire’s Garden debut. "There’s only 1.5 or 2 real centers left, Dwight Howard and Yao Ming. Every now and then Yao Ming steps outside and wants to shoot jumpers, but it’s gone more toward the European style. The days of Patrick Ewing and Rik Smits and Kevin Duckworth and Robert Parish, those days are over, thanks to me."
Wow I didn't realize how much he respected Kevin Duckworth.
And yes, he’s speaking out of certain body parts that aren’t his mouth. He seems to have an intense dislike of Joel and Greg for unknown reasons.
Nahhh this was more about the general intense dislike on the court
I don’t know what happened with the two of them, but I’m surprised they haven’t brawled yet. It wasn’t meant to be connected to the quote necessarily.
There are a ton of other centers that he doesn't mention either
Bogut and his teammate Perkins are curiously missing.
That last season in Toronto was such a sad thing to watch btw.
That’s a player who should have retired with his own team.
I don’t really have any memory of that, honestly. I don’t think I watched any games other than Blazer games and the NBA finals back then.
Ahh so you also missed Ewing in Seattle and Orlando
It was like watching Joe Montana play for the Chiefs. I’m sure there’s a recent basketball example but I can’t think of it.
Jordan on the Wiz would be the obvious one.
Though maybe you’re thinking even more recently. Iverson on the Grizz?
Even though AI had been through two teams at that point, it's not a bad example
He looked just so weird in that Grizz uniform.
Duncan’s totally a center, at least in the most important sense (dominating interior defense). He was never better than Shaq, but he’s a convenient bridge from Shaq to Dwight.
neither dwight nor duncan are as dominant as Hakeem and Shaq. Both Hakeem and Shaq had the agility of chinese acrobats. For big men, it is such a rarity.
true enough
but very very few others did either. I just think it’s dumb when people talk about the decline of centers. Sure Shaq is done and Duncan is getting old, but Dwight, Bogut and Oden are all rising stars, and Bynum, Marc Gasol and Kaman are all traditional low post players that are a step below. It’s not like the center position is dead in this league.

I heard somewhere that something like 60% of business failures occur because the partners won’t pony up enough capital to get it to the point where it’s profitable. That’s to say they would’ve succeeded if they would’ve borne losses (or small profits) for a bit longer.
Tell me about it
I had someone close down shop before the Christmas quarter, which was a worse decision than any Blazers GM has ever made. Could have saved a lot of trouble and money, and if done right still be a top global company.

ahhh... gotcha
I was referring to the S-Corp agreement which lines out what each partner is bringing to the table… if it’s not in there it makes it harder to prove… and I dunno what was agreed on in there vs. verbal communication

yeah, obv. if it’s not written down it’s much harder to prove. But when you get a partner in there who doesn’t really want to be there, it gets to be a pain in the arse no matter how you slice it.
Ive talked to a lawyer. As majority owners it's well within our rights to call
A stockholders meeting and vote for dissolution of the company. At that point we divide up assets based on stock ownership and can just walk away. I contact the SOS and dissolve it, then can reapply for registration changing the parent Corp name and continue to use the business name. He can’t force me to operate the business so he gets all his investment back. He should have taken my first offer, his money back, cause he’s gonna end up with a whole lot less this way. Also intellectual property remains mine no matter what, he has zero legal claim on it. It sucks because it’ll destroy out friendship but remaining in business together likely would have led to that anyways.

Lamar Odom.
I wonder if he finally busts out this year. I know it’s kinda passe to talk about his potential and the frustrations people have with him, but with the Laker’s not at full health, and Odom looking really really good this preseason (along with in the Worlds) the situation may be ripe for a bust out year. Which is scary.
An entire career of never living up to his potential.
It’s not like his skills or athleticism are rapidly declining. Everyone’s always agreed it’s been a mental thing with him. Maybe he’s just finally matured enough to be the player everyone knew he could be.

What are the incentives on the card?
I would say yes. Generally, signing up for any credit card for one time use benefits is usually a bad idea.
ew i just looked at a little chart thingy
if i paid the minimum it would take 15 years to pay off and cost 3200 bucks.
You've already done more research than many people.
Learning the cost involved with minimum payments is one heck of a sticker shock.
Paying the minimum on CC statements is basically never a good idea
unless you’re under some serious hardship.
Credit card companies looooove people who don't know about credit.
Take, say, two hours this week to learn what you can, it’ll be totally worth the time spent.
If you can hold another month for a computer, I'm not joking about Thanksgiving
Unless you’ve found an amazing deal right now, there are normally cheaper prices during the holiday season. It does depend a bit on what you’re looking for though. For example, I don’t know how much gaming machines will drop in price. Though a non-gaming machine might be at a great price, along with sales on video cards.
Well Black Friday deals will be for preconfigured machines normally
There usually wouldn’t be a wait for it to be built, it would be shipped quickly, or you could pick it up depending on the store.
You lose money when you carry balances.
Pay in full when possible and you’ll reap the benefits of whatever incentive program your card has while building a good credit record and bleeding off as little money as possible to the credit company.
But be careful... if you always pay off in full, credit companies can get cranky too
There’s a weird balance involved.
pretty sure they still exist

Yeah, probably.
They’ve raised my apr through the roof recently. I threatened to close my account recently and they offered me 15k bonus miles to stay. So whatever. I basically use my cc like cash and pay off my balance every month so my apr is actually of little importance to me.
EXACTLY
Pay for everything with a credit card, and then pay it off EVERY month; enjoy the rewards. Watch your credit score grow and Screw the MAN!
I'm not sure if the new legislation fixed this
But credit card companies liked to cancel people who never carried balances because they weren’t good for the bottom line.
Nonetheless, I think you’re doing the right thing.
i have heard about this
but it hasn’t happened to me. IMHO, if it did, then I’d probably just get another CC from someone else.

My favorite part is that when the U.S.-Soviet Union game was over in Lake Placid, Michaels had to stick around to call another game. So he did not get back to the hotel until much later, and he had no idea then that his words would become so memorable. In fact, someone at the hotel said to him: "That was great what you said."
And for just an instant, Al thought: "What did I say?"

so funny
The Great Dictator is an awesome movie. Funny and important at the same time.
The Tramp, Modern Times, The Gold Rush, The Immigrant, etc are classics too though the style is sometimes more goofy which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

In case you didn’t notice, I’m not totally on the Gordon bandwagon either after watching him not being able to penetrate or achieve separation from his man, dribbling down the clock to create a completely terrible shot falling out of bounds when it mattered in the NCAA final. He’ll likely stick around in the league, but his feet are slow and he’s not that strong putting him in a similar starting position as Babbitt when it comes to defending the SF spot in the NBA.

Rose has also come down a lot to reality with his inability to draw fouls and poor passing. But maybe Thibs can right that ship.

"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
considering his growth last year
he certainly has a chance to make the leap to PGOTF prospect.
Depends on whether he gets the second-year to third-year leap or hits the plexiglass principle.
yep, I agree completely. This year will go along way toward determining whether he’s an off the bench scoring guard or something more than that.
it will be interesting
the fanfest videos showed him distributing well, but i haven’t seen anything since to strengthen that opinion. Hopefully he makes a nice little jump to ~17 PER and gets us excited.
Armon looked like a very heady passer and "decider" to attack or to defer in SL
Sadly, nothing like that has transpired from the pre-season games. So yeah, Jerryd is still the best internal option for that future role.

I don't get that.
Westbrook’s asst% is top 10, and I’m actually pretty confident it’ll continue to climb this year.
ROASTED
I think Westbrook is an unselfish, good but careless passer who sometimes has really high assist totals from their pace. But he can pass.
#52
Not really.
It’s a misconception cause we’re young and undersized that we like to gamble alot and that’s why we win on defense. We do get a lot of steals and blocks, but more important is that the system is built not to gamble but to force tough shots. We give up a horrible FG% at the rim but from everywhere else on the floor, our opp. FG% was tops or near it.
I ain't going on that sort of stuff
Coulda’ sworn I saw numbers saying you guys were up there for fastbreak points (similar to the low pace of the Dre-led 76ers, but had a lot of fastbreak points). I can’t find it now on BBR.

I don't rip on him either
But I still claim there was a reason Bayless got mentioned in one breath with him leading up to the draft, and was projected a top 5 pick for a long long time. Riley worked out him and Mayo just days before the draft thinking about trading down and giving up on Beasley. And he made highlight videos from high school comparing him to Rose for similar reasons.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
How the player projects really has little bearing at this point.
I thought Westbrook was an awful pick at the time. I never thought he’d pan out at point. I’m a believer now.
I for one believe the projections were right
I’m not ULC, but I do think Jerryd will be a very solid guard in this league. If on this team remains to be seen.
"Listening to the media only increases your odds of failing at whatever you are doing" - Mark Cuban
I actually like Jerryd
and think you could very well be right. But he hasn’t proven he’s anywhere the playmaker Westbrook is.
it's a very unsubstantiated opinion
but I think a lot of Westbrook’s assists come off of fastbreak situations.
AST% is percentage of team baskets assisted, right?
With how many possessions Durant uses for free throws and how little isolation the bigs run, I think that Westbrook creating shots would be one of their only ways to score.
It’s this way for a lot of points probably, I’m just thinking out loud.
It's not my style, but if Jerryd gets traded
Then does really well, I will blame Nate. It will also break my heart a little.

I finished Once Brothers, the Petrovic/Divac 30 for 30 documentary
I was surprised to see it was done by NBA productions. As such, it’s very, very well done. very professional, good production work.
It’s also incredibly depressing. If you’re a Blazer fan from the early 90’s, I actually think it’s not a must-watch. You already know the basics (and the Divac details are now readable online), and it’s really tough to watch.
Portland is only mentioned as the place that didn’t give Drazen a chance, but they also openly state the reasons. Clyde and Adelman personally talked about the glut of guards (a candid shot from 1990 shows Vlade and Magic wonder aloud what Portland is thinking), and in a nice moment, Clyde talked about how the team had a “Drazen board” to track his progress after the trade and they watched every NJ game they could. In the bigger picture, it’s basically about Divac and his personal demons. It made for an interesting documentary, but it means the Blazers were a very small part.
If you don’t know that period, or are really big on watching historical stuff, it’s enlightening and worth a view.

"The Boy Who Survived the Plane Crash Learns That His Entire Family is Dead-- ...Just as he planned!"

This daring and devious boy, long wishing to be released from the shackles that family and loved ones bring, devises a devilishly dastardly plan to kill his entire familial clan and get away with it.
After spending months researching “How to survive plane crashes” online, the Boy puts theory into practice when the family was flying together to a funeral for his grandmother.
The first step was finding a patsy, and the Boy found the perfect one in the poor Pakistani shop owner who made the mistake of announcing on his public blog that he was “taking a trip to see my daughter and my new grandson”. The poor sap even declared what airline and time he would be flying… as fate would have it, it was the same flight as the Boy’s family.
Armed with that bit of knowledge, the Boy spent weeks preparing fake anti-American videos, diatribes that were later attributed to the poor, law abiding Pakistani man by the lazy national media.
Wearing a ski mask, no one questioned the incorrect accent or body structure, and everyone was so quick to blame this act of terrorism that brought down Flight 831 on the man whose only mistake was being mysteriously brown and announcing he was seeing his first grandson.
The perfect crime.

My favorites were from Glen Lerner "The Heavy Hitter"
He got in trouble a couple of years ago. He foolishly decided to take a murder case, apparently the first murder case he had ever taken (he’s an attorney who deals primarily with car crashes). The defendant was, as I remember, the man who cleaned his pool. So it’s the first day of the trial and – Glen “The Heavy Hitter” Lerner is not in the courthouse. Turns out he was on the East Coast on vacation….

PROOF.
In all the pageantry of the next couple of days, you can bet that only one blemish on the Jordan record will come up, and I suspect it will be mentioned again and again, because it fits a certain heroic narrative: Michael Jordan was once cut from his high school team.
Only, it’s not true. He was never cut from anything.
The story, instead, is that at his high school at that time sophomores, even the good ones, played junior varsity. As a sophomore, as planned, Jordan had a great season on the junior varsity, before progressing to varsity for his junior and senior seasons.
