Rambis has given [Martell] the freedom to make mistakes and play through them. He said he felt if he made mistakes with the Blazers, "I was going to get barked at and told not to do it again and get the ball to the point guard, yadda, yadda, yadda, etcetera, etcetera. Here, the coach emphasizes you play through it, you don't hang your head. You do it, you get back on defense and you forget about it."

not surprising
I’ve long advocated that Nate doesn’t let our young guys learn on the court – the quick hook (or even the fear of it) stunts their development.
While this is fully understandable the last couple of years, it hasn’t done guys like Bayless, Martell, and Rudy any favors. Sadly, Martell was not allowed this freedom back in 2005-06 through 2007-08, when it would have made a world of difference, and our team stunk anyway.

your point is?
B Roy was a 4 year college player who was much more prepared for the NBA than fresh from HS Martell was. We won a league-worst 21 games Martell’s rookie year, but our #6 overall draft pick was only played 17.5 minuter per game in 61 games while we concentrated on developing Ruben Patterson, Juan Dixon, and Voshon Leonard. Every other doormat team in the league throws their highly drafted rookies out there and tells them to go learn. What did we have to lose? more games?
Even in his 2nd year, he played sparingly behind Dixon and Ime Udoka, who led us to 32 wins that year.
I’m not saying we should have been sacrificing wins to develop Martel the last few years, but we seriously messed up by not playing him more those first 2 years.

Not too mention that Roy already could dribble, pass, shoot off the dribble, and drive well
All things Martell is very poor at.
Until he's not, Rudy's a Blazer.

Webster was almost included in the Zach-Frye trade
the coaching staff was fed up with Martell after the ’06-07 season because he acted like he knew it all…to his credit he came back the next fall with a better attitude (Marty Blazer!) and when he was ready to break out in ’08-09 then he broke his foot and Batum took over
2005 draft = epic fail. Classic example of how to overanalyze your way out of selecting CP3 or D-Will
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
well
he was pretty bad, if you remember he actually got sent down to the d-league

Indeed, Webster played for the then David Kahn owned and now defunct Fort Worth Flyers.
Yes, the same Kahn who’s the foolish Minnesota T’wolves President of Basketball Operations.
On another note, the star player for the Flyers that season was none other than Portland’s own Ime Udoka.

Pretty easy to get when you play for a crappy team
If what I just commented turns out to be wrong, please delete from all memory.
May not have been all Nate

just to pound it home
For the 3rd time
sure on a 20 win team shots are AYCE but on a 50 win team those shots are a lot harder to come by.
Also, Martell has had his chance when we were a 20 win team and did not take it, he didn’t have it and now that he does I do not expect him to ever be a solid contributor on a plaof level team.
Bayless and Roy= Fire and Ice (TM)
Spread the word
I love Marty and wish him the best
he is a great guy but he is a bit of a head case which I think was were a lot of his consistency problems came from.
Sounds like a quote from a rookie or 2nd year player.
This is year 6 of your career, Martell. Set the bar a little higher.
If Martell wanted to develop his game in a more nurturing environment, he should've gone to college
Not very many NBA coaches are cool with mistakes and inconsistency.

Thanks for beating me to it
It’s not like Martell deserved a long leash.

In Martell Webster's defense, he made a wise financial decision to skip the University of Washington.

He said the same thing on 1080 right after he got traded
That McMillan stifled him and made him play in a role that limited his production. He said he’s more of a playmaker than people think.
We’ll see how he plays, but I’m skeptical. My impression was that Webster was a poor ball-handler and passer. Even where he’s ostensibly good, shooting, he’s only above average, and pretty terrible if it’s not off the catch.
Also, Webster is going to be sharing minutes with Wesley Johnson at the 3. Neither is a 2. So isn’t Martell going to end up with the same amount of minutes he got in Portland?
Nate should pull players when they screw up
there’s a lotta talent on the bench that needs a chance too. fortunately for MW, there’s not enough talent in Minnesota to steal his minutes…..

well, it is the Timberwolves.
And they’ll be lucky if they win 25 games.
Go to Heaven for the climate, Hell for the company.
If I remember right...
Martell struggled for a while because he would do exactly what Rambis is telling him not to do: make a mistake and put his head down and get lost on defense. I like Webster but he had plenty of chances to grab the SF position and not let it go as a Blazer. He improved during his time here and was always a great guy but he just didn’t get it done. If he is receptive to Rambis over the long haul I would say it is a result of his maturation and not an indication of Nate failing to give him opportunities. Maybe his foot injury at the most inopportune moment played a role also by allowing Batum to make the most of his opportunity.

Agree, moslty.
I think he’s too soft mentally, to sensitive – just from what I’ve seen in his bdy language on court and some of the comments he made over the years in interviews.
He is still only 23
A fresh start in Minnesota combined with a lot of minutes might be just what he needs.

Nate must really be a jekyll/hyde type
Because he seems like one of the least excitable sideline coaches I’ve ever seen. The stoic, stern, arms-crossed blank stare is like 95%.
If Martell could have just done what Rambis is asking him to do, without being asked, he would probably still be here.
Batum
Martell was never, ever going to take that spot from Batum, so why is he needed here.
