Brandon Roy All-Star Starter

Good job with making the team B Roy, seems like every year he becomes a more solid all star pick. his first all star pick was generally accepted though some were surprised, last season everyone considered him a legit all star, and this season reporters and coaches referred to him as an easy all star pick, no doubt in their minds.

He keeps improving every year. What could be next?

Do you think he'll ever start an all star game? Yes or No

Why he could start

  • He has good enough numbers
  • He's respected around the league
  • Kobe's the only other SG on this years west all star team.
  • Kobe will retire soon
  • If the blazers become a conference finals team over the next few years, that will give him more exposure
  • They may change the way the starters are picked, not just fan voting
Why He could not start
  • Kobe get s the L.A. fan votes
  • They probably wouldn't start him at the Point or Small forward
  • Not as commercialized as most all star starters
  • Fans vote for starters as of right now
  • The northwest doesn't get a lot of media exposure

I disagree

While name recognition holds WAY too much sway for selecting all-star starters, there are many ways a player can earn that among the general public.

- Did he make a big impression in college?
- Is he among league leaders in major statistical categories?
- Does he have any major sponsorships?
- Did he do well in the dunk contest?
- Is he in a big market?
- Has he delivered a memorable performance in the playoffs?
- Has he exposed himself on the internet?

Some of these things are outside of his control, but others are not. Let’s hope he takes the route of a deep playoff run over fist fighting a ref en route to fame.

Greg Oden exposed himself on the internet

And he’s not getting an All-Star nod.

What gives?

Love it.

This stuff is never going to get old.

Last year I worked hard but I came down with a Staph infection, so I had to sit out for 3 weeks. This year I didn't catch no Staph infection so I was able to work out full. -Big bass Trav

Brandon kind of answered this yesterday

he’s not going to spend his offseason making commercials, he’d rather hang with his wife/kids

so unless Portland wins a championship and Roy is the MVP, I don’t see him getting the necessary votes from the internets

When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

He went to school in the Pacific Northwest

So no. He was not exposed in college. That year it was all about Adam Morrison vs. JJ Redick (Gonzaga/Duke respectively).

Not like the Utah Jazz... it's about REAL jazz. Go Dawgs, Go Blazers, Go Tarheels!

Unless his talent level gets so overwhelming that it would be foolish to NOT vote for him.

I say no.

He’d have to average 30/6/6 to do that. Portland’s market is just too small for the level of stats he puts up to support an All-Star starter.

by Arby on Jan 29, 2010 1:43 PM PST reply actions

You don't think he can average that?

Well, maybe not with Nate at the helm, but it’s certainly possible for him.

Brandon is just too good at too many things. I say he’ll start, but not until the Blazers make a couple of deep playoff pushes.

He won't start until Kobe retires... (even if he deserves it)

I just hope A.I. never gets traded to the Western Conference…

nash

steve nash is retiring soon too i would wager, thats two open spots at starting guards. leaving just paul williams and roy left for those two spots, assuming there isn’t any other guards you can see going from not being on the all star team to starting on the all star team

Monta Ellis

I don’t like his lack of efficiency, but he plays in Cali, and puts up big numbers.

Paul will get the votes over Brandon

unless Brandon leads us to a couple of championships.

Brandon’s unlikely to start before Kobe retires, then perhaps.

There hasn't been any significance to being an all star starter since they enabled fan voting

As it’s been pointed out numerous times, undeserving, but popular players get votes. It’s not a measure of basketball talent, but rather the marketability and popularity of the players. Why should we care about Roy’s popularity? I’ll take the approval of the coaches and selections to the All NBA team over staring in the ASG.

You won.

by Magnum on Jan 29, 2010 3:34 PM PST reply actions

More popularity means more revenue for the team and more recognition for the city.

More revenue means the team gets closer to profitability. More profitability means the team is more likely to remain a Portland staple, whether it stays in the Allen family or is picked up by another entity. So, although on the surface all star selections seem meaningless, in the big picture they are anything but.

by zaruga on Jan 30, 2010 10:55 AM PST up reply actions

how does popularity outside of the PNW bring in more money for the team?

The Blazers are already on national TV a bunch and the Rose Garden sells out. I doubt jersey sales are the missing piece in profitability. The team isn’t going anywhere for a long time anyway.

You won.

Only way it happens is after we at least get to the Finals a time or two

we probably have to win even to make it happen.

Clyde only got voted to start ONCE in all his years here. And that was only after we had been in the 1990 Finals and the 1991 WCF.

How did you guys win that?

I think the only way Roy is a starter is if the NBA does away the fan voting.

But clyde was a starter 3 times, also, so anything is possible. Did the fans vote for the starters back then? I don’t know.

Two of those stars came after he went to Houston, and after he won a title

Yes fans did pick the starters, it was pretty much in atena voting only. So stuffimg the ballot box was much harder (though there are stories of teams doing this) and presumably the voters were a bit more knowledgable

So that means it would likely be even harder for Roy to get voted in then it was for Clyde, who also had the added exposure of being in the dunk contsest year in and year out

Here's who we have as SG starters on the West

Brandon Roy – POR
Kobe Bryant – LAL
Eric Gordon – LAC
Monta Ellis – GSW
Kevin Martin – SAC Tyreke Evans – SAC
Ronnie Brewer – UTH
Jason Richardson – PHO
Arron Afflalo – DEN JR Smith – DEN
Corey Brewer – MIN
James Harden – OKC Thabo Sefolosha – OKC
Tracy McGrady – HOU Shane Battier – HOU
Jason Terry – DAL
OJ Mayo – MEM
Marcus Thornton – NOH
Keith Bogans SAS Manu Ginobli – SAS

I don’t see many that scream All-star. Manu? Maybe back in the day. OJ Mayo? maybe, JET? No. TMac? If fans continue to vote. Harden? Hardly. Tyreke Evans? Maybe but he’s a PG right? I guess it doesn’t matter really. PGs and SGs get voted in as Guards any ways. What’s my point? Idk. Roy does have a lot to compete against for starters.

Being a Blazer fan is not exactly healthy.

I like that the NW doesn't have media exposure

Keeps us from too many bandwagon fans and boosts that sweet underdog image

No fancy dunks and highlight athletic plays for BRoy...

Because Brandon doesn’t appear on Sportscenter often, if ever, he can’t win fans votes. Fans can’t appreciate 9-12 and leadership many nights but they appreciate Kobe’s 9-24 because he gets 3 highlight dunks. Just blame Sportscenter. And hey, popular opinion was that Mili-Vanili was great so I’m with Brandon: starting is not important. Getting there is.

Brandon will never, ever start an all-star game; but the coaches know. They doubled and tripled him in game 1 and they always say: “let every other Portland player beat them.”

BRoy will make the all-star team almost every year for the rest of his career if he is healthy. But he will never start.

by jcuw94 on Jan 29, 2010 6:37 PM PST reply actions

ROY=Micheal Red of the West Coast

He just doesn’t get media exposure even though he is much better than Red ever was.

If Roy were to avg 27+ I think he might get on SportsCenter a few more times with 40+pt games but then he isn’t the teamplayer he is.

Addendum: More APG!

I would actually in my ideal is to run Roy at mostly the PG, get his assits to 6-7 a game, with his scoring dropping slightly, but can still take over and demand double teams, and have Martel/Rudy play off him starting, with Batum at 3, LMA then Oden etc etc.

Derek Jeter...

would probably start the ASG if he were put on the ballot. The recognition is nice, but you can’t count on fans to get it right, and because they never do it’s fairly meaningless anyway. The ASG itself is a joke as well. Just give the stars of the first half of the season a certificate and let Nelly and BowWow play ball outside their studio.

O.J. Mayo could surpise people but probably won't because he plays for memphis

Kevin Durant could possibly be moved to SG like he did at the beginning of his career tho that’s highly unlikely. Don’t count on Kobe retiring anytime soon though. When Kobe does finally hang them up, Roy is sure to get it. He’s the consensus number 3 SG in the league. A couple more playoff appearances should cement that sentiment.
