JD 01-20-10
So my wife gave birth to baby #3 on Monday.
Since I don't have to go back to work for the rest of the month, how should I spend my time when everyone else is asleep?
So far I have been kicking around the idea of comparing the health care debate to the Blazers Point Guards. Sebastian Telfair is playing the role of the current system (not in the long term health of society). Steve Blake is Medicare/Medicaid (does some things better than Telfair, but can't do a lot of things well either). Chris Paul is a single-payer, universal system of insurance (far superior than what we have, but we can't get it because it is too radical of a change). I am still looking how to work Andre and Bayless into this topic. Thoughts?

Norm got screwed by NBC too
He got fired by that executive who used to run MTV when they wouldn’t run videos by black artists. That executive is also friends with OJ, which is why he wanted Norm Macdonald fired.

When I was a kid, I read that people would ride mules or donkeys down this trail on the side of the Grand Canyon, and I had a fear we’d go on a family trip to there and take the mules/donkeys down and I would get the one that is dumb and would fall off the edge from the top.

Conan said it best the other day
He was talking about someone not liking it and Conan said, “That’s because you forgot to get high before watching it”.
It was a cheesy movie
It’s like one of those virtual rides at a theme park. A totally worthless story but cool effects.
I tried coke on new years and like minutes later I told my wife I was addicted
I want to try crack now
what’s the difference?
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
I don't know
I only had like 3 grains of rice of the stuff and won’t do it again. My friends roommate had some lying around and he convinced me to try it at around 1 in the morning.
No, never done crack
Mushrooms would be nice to do again. The ones I had didn’t mess you up, just made you happy and think funny thoughts.
#52
Yeah
Last time I took them was well over 10 years ago and we went swimming. The surface of the water looked like paisley.
My dad always recommended them to me
He warned me not to do acid, or at least that he hated it. It’s too much, he said.
#52
Acid's not bad
I wouldn’t do it these days, but if you’re doing something fun with fun people then it’s fun.
I feel like I should try it
Like, half a thingy of it at least.
My brain can get the best of me during normal times, so I do worry. I can get dark and weird, and if I can’t control it…
#52
Take it and go on a hike or bike ride
The only time I ever did it and was bad, was at a scary Chinese restaurant. I was freaked out by all the flies.
The worst part
Is my good friends down here aren’t good for acid takin’.
Only ones I wouldn’t trust or think it’d be fun.
Salvia is sold close to me, I might try that. It’s legal, too.
#52
I've thought about that too
Mushrooms here are like 5 times more expensive than they were in Oregon 10 years ago.
Yeah, in Amsterdam
Since I don’t enjoy smoking, I figured it’d be a good way to try it.
And, since I always need more than most people of ANYTHING to get the same affect, and that was always true with pot, I bought TWO.
I ate one, didn’t feel a thing. Didn’t know it took longer than smoking it. Ate the 2nd.
I was GOOOOOOOOOOOOONE.
#52
I've had them 2 times
I sat around feeling nothing and then after about an hour it felt like someone clubbed me with a stoned shovel.

It was kinda lame.

I've done my fair share of acid and mushrooms. Acid's like anything else, once you've done enough, you learn to control it, or at least expect what's up next, and the fun is gone.
Cocaine is great fun, and thus not much fun at all: Too much is WAY too much. I avoid it now. Maybe once every few years, but that’s been a few years now since I made that little rule.
By the way, “Mortimer” i hope you will let the real Mortimer go soon. He’s really a nice fellow and a lot of good fun here at BlazersCentral. He doesn’t know anything about any drugs nor does he have any use to your DEA intelligence office.

Definitely not.
I remember having to work in an undergraduate social psychology lab pretending to agree or disagree with the real subjects. I did this every monday from 10am-5pm, we had a lab session every hour. I was still frying from the night before and basically had to hang out in a small garden just around the corner and tell one of my friend to get me when it was time.

I wandered around the forest for a long time. It was amazing in there.

I goto college at WWU
in Bellingham WA. There is a place called the arboretum next to the campus. It’s basically a hill with a bunch of bike trails and a radio tower on top and it also has a big watchtower that you can climb up and look at the bay from. It’s beautiful on any occasion but a bunch of us tripped and watched the sunrise from the top of the watch tower. It completely blew my mind.
Keep the faith.
Did anyone fall off the tower?
From watching That 70’s Show I have come to believe this happens a lot!!

the only reason I'd buy an old car that needs work
is if someone (either the seller or a friend) would work with me to fix it up. I would love to know how to work on cars. Right now I can change my oil and tires and that’s about it.

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
Hasslebeck at his best was/is certainly good enough.
His problem though – every time he got/gets a little frustrated he’s an interception machine.

They need to start grooming a franchise qb now though
Tebo would be a good tight end and he’s a winner, I just don’t know if he’s an NFL caliber qb
They really do have a lot of good pieces, but a QB is needed.
They’re starting to remind me of the Raiders who for years had all kinds of talent but couldn’t do a thing.
I just hope Pete’s game translates to the NFL.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
No doubt, he's better than Mora.
With all the wildcat offense popping up, Tebo could make it somewhere for who he is now.
But Pete’s USC offense looked more like a typical NFL team than wildcat.
Still though, I wouldn’t be disappointed if Tebo came our way.

The second sentence is redundant...and there's no dramatic pause before the punchline...it's just BAM...first sentence funny.
You could give it a little more punch by asking a question, pausing, and then answering it.
“You know what one of the toughest things about relationships between two women?”
(pause)
“Trying to decide who makes the sandwhiches!”
(crowd laughs)
“I mean seriously—who is going to be your go-to sandwich maker if you’re both chicks!”
(crowd finishes laughing, claps)
the pause could be really big, espeically in a lesbian joke that might make people curious/uncomfortable/whatever
Then they get to release it all when you deliver the punchline
you are really good at that..
thanks for the great feedback :)

Maybe Prez can answer this
My “Book of Useless Facts” book claims that most villains in the Bible have red hair… TRUE?!
#52
I can't say conclusively, but Abraham had two sons
Jacob and Esau…Jacob’s name was changed to Israel and he’s the father of all the Israelites…the “good guys”
Esau became the father of the Edomites…“bad guys”
Esau literally means “Red” in Hebrew, so I’m assuming that’s where your book of useless facts’s fact is coming from.
He had red hair, but not named Esau because of it.
The name Esau came from the red pot of beans that he sold his birthright for.

not good
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
Ricky Rubio against Victor Claver, next Saturday 1-23, 9:00WT.
Live and legally for free on ACB.COM (lurk and find 360, or ask me for help).
That´s a tough one, but I could do it.
Rudy wants a bigger role in a team that have Roy, Webster, Batum, Bayless, LA, Oden… And he could play better with a point guard he´d be used to play with. Now that Sergio is gone and he´s been injured everything seems to be more uphill. Ricky would fit right now.
Ricky won´t come to the NBA until 2011 or 2012. Now with Oden on the dock I think Blazers window doesn´t open until 2012-2013. By that time Ricky will be probably the best player coming into the NBA, with lot of experience under his belt, having played for the highest titles out of the NBA, and with a nice rookie contract.
Let's not get out of control
I find it unlikely that Ricky could ever reach the level that Bayless was at LAST season even!!!!!
#52
No way!!!
If Ricky develops a jump shot and/or 3-pointer he’s miles ahead of Bayless.
If not, then I go with Bayless.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
that being true,
he’s shooting better. Although I think it has to do with him not being considered an true outside threat, and his defender leaves a bit more space, which translates in easier shots.
Stats 3pt:
07-08 in 34 games, 29/101 (29%)
08-09 in 22 games, 23/53 (43%)
09-10 in 18 games, 19/40 (48%)
one funny thing, this season he has more steals (44) than turnovers (31)
Space or no space, 48% is not bad.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
w0rd
The line is a lil’ shorter, but that’s a very nice percentage.
19 for 40 isn’t a grip of shots, but last year and this year shows he can hit it.
#52
If we ever landed Ricky, I’d die right here and now.
I can’t see it happening, but I got a right to dream.
Oden will be slammin so many balls….woah did you see that alleyoooooooop to Rudy.
Stop it Mort, just stop it, you’re making me do it again.
I blame you for my Bayless hate.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
Also...
He´s shot 22 three pointers in the last six consecutive games (ACB and Euroleague games) and he´s made 15 of them(68%). He still hasn´t a jump shot but he´s draining threes when he has an open look.
The 3 point line is at 22 feet 14 inches in FIBA this year, while the NBA is at 23 feet, 9 inches. It wasn´t a problem for Rudy and Navarro when they come to the NBA (it was at 20 feet 50 inches for the FIBA at that time), and it won´t be a problem for Ricky either.
Nice,
I’m 100% from 3. When I made my first I decided to put a toe on the line from then on.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."

Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
I’d like to see if he keeps on making progress.
Frankly, I had a hard time watching him last year. This year not so much, he proved he puts in the work.
I’d give anything for him to not have tunnel vision.
Romance me with that Roy rainbow shot which took flight from way beyond the arc and sailed so high that before it came back down to earth sealing the victory, it kissed the rafters and said "You're mine baby."
Maybe. I like Bayless too and he´s also young.
By that time Bayless will have three or four years of NBA experience, while Ricky will have two or three years of experience as the starting PG in the best team out of the NBA and in the Spanish National Team, playing some Finals. Probably even.
I think Ricky will be a Nash type of player, with better defense, while Bayless will be more a Monta Ellis type. If both reach their ceiling I´d go with anyone. Even again.
As the team is constructed, maybe Ricky is a better fit, because he doen´t need the ball in his hands to be effective, and he makes his teammates better.
If Ricky's body develops
And he can play the defense he appeared capable of playing in the Olympics, I don’t have much doubt he’ll be quite a bit better than Bayless.
How does Ricky’s body look this year?
#52
He was adorable last year
But if a bank robber broke into my home, I don’t think Rubio could protect me. I want a PG who can do that.
#52
I think you may have hit the nail on the head there.
How good is Bayless without the ball in his hands?
Good question, because I’m not really sure – just haven‘t paid attention to it.
There have been times when I thought, "what in the world are you doing", but then I’ve also seen him working hard without the ball. But I haven’t really focused on that aspect.

Yep, that’s Andre Miller – the victum.
If the damn guy would only stop wearing those short skirts and crotchless panties, he wouldn’t be treated so poorly and with such utter lack of respect.
There should be a law against treatment like this. (Of course with the Congress we have, give it time. If you can link it to global warming it’s almost a shoo in.)

LMA's defense is actually pretty solid, especially on the perimeter

RIP Dan Fitzgerald
Who helped start the Zags on their run towards becoming a consistent national power.
Link: Fitzgerald dies; built Zags’ foundation
Quote:
Dan Fitzgerald, the coach who built Gonzaga into a national basketball power but resigned before the school began its current run of NCAA tournaments, has died at the age of 67.
" I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Fitz. He’s had a huge impact on how we still run the program, how we work, how we prepare. What we do and what we achieve now has Fitz’s imprint all over it.
" — Gonzaga coach Mark Few
Fitzgerald collapsed Tuesday evening in a restaurant in the suburb of Airway Heights. He was pronounced dead at Deaconness Medical Center in Spokane, according to a nursing supervisor at the hospital.
The cause of death was not immediately released.
Fitzgerald recruited John Stockton to campus, took the Bulldogs to their first NCAA tournament in 1995, and built the coaching staff of Mark Few, Dan Monson and Bill Grier that has put the Bulldogs in every NCAA tournament since the 1999 season.
Fitzgerald was 252-171 as coach from 1978 to 1997, and also served as athletic director.
“He was an unforgettable personality,” Stockton told The Spokesman-Review. “He was loyal — incredibly loyal — above all. He was there for anything and everything I’ve ever needed, ever asked for.”

oh to be young and having such questions again....
well, let me tell you a story, DS, that might be relevant. or not, who can tell?
I get a work order that a computer in the library is not working. I call the appropriate staff member to ask what the problem is. I am told that the monitor says there is no “hardware connect”. I am assured all the cables are plugged in. I ask if the monitor is turned on and am again answered in the affirmative. So I tell them I’ll come down to look at it and hang up. I go down there and do you know what the problem is? The monitor is not turned on. yeah…..
so is this real life? I say yes. As real as it can be for now. The question in my mind is “what composes real life?”
by DrivetheLane on Jan 20, 2010 9:07 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
if the monitor is not turned on, how does it say no "hardware connect?"
by Starvin' Marvin on Jan 20, 2010 9:09 AM PST up reply actions
i've never seen the monitor display "no hardware connect"
I have seen them display a message saying “no signal” which is the message a monitor will give when the computer is not turned on but the monitor is. When i got there, the computer was turned off and so was the monitor. As is usually the case in this job, who knows what was actually going on when the computer/monitor “didn’t work”.

An all-white basketball league? Some seriously want it
No joke
Link:
Whites-Only Basketball League: All-American Basketball Alliance Bans Blacks, Foreigners
Quote:
A whites-only basketball league aims to launch in twelve cities this summer, according to a report in the Augusta Chronicle. The All-American Basketball Alliance would also ban players born outside the United States.
The league’s commissioner, Don “Moose” Lewis, claims that he doesn’t “hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now.” Thus, he says, the All-American Basketball Alliance would be “a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like.”
The report includes additional shocking quotes from the commissioner:
Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of “street-ball” played by “people of color.” …
“Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?” he said. “That’s the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction.”

The problem as I saw it
and what got me most worked up is a number of people told her that her question had insensitive/highly racial connotations and she kept going. I think one person directly told her she was implying certain races are genetically pre-disposed to crime and her response was “could be”. I think that type of response led to the harsh tone of my and others replies.

13 yr old straight out of Providence RI!!!!!!!!!!! 634 fo life!!! In p-town city right now and BR0Y is mvp fo sho
i remember the "could be" response
being towards something that was asking if she was really that ignorant, which is a completely inappropriate response. if someone had just explained why her question could be offensive without making any personal remarks about her (which I didn’t see happen) things probably would have died down. unfortunately, one of the sadder things around here is when someone puts their foot in thier mouth, there is no shortage of piling on. and the piling on does not come in the shape of edifying discussion.

"could be" was when one of the junkers asked her if she realized what she was saying

yeah. as i remember it that comment was:
do you realize that what you’re saying is insensitive or are you really that ignorant?
and she responded with what i interpreted as a dismissive “could be”
but perhaps i’m misremembering.

is there ever an excuse for insensitivity?
assuming she didn’t know the complexities of the issue (or was repeating something she read on yahoo, as she stated but did not link) then yes, her lack of knowledge led to an insensitive question. but this is no reason to berate her.

Insensitivity is one thing
but, and again speaking only on my own behalf, her responses/posts led me to conclude she had a concrete racial point in mind she was trying to make or joke about, and the Yahoo reference was a straw man – basically I’ve got this idea, and here’s something I read that backs me up. That got me pretty riled up.

Again, the "could be" in response to
a poster telling her that her question (Is that why the crime rate in PDX is so low) was basically saying if there are a lot of black people in an area, their race alone and nothing else is going to lead to crime was what elicited my own harsher response. That was, imo, deliberate on her part and meant to fan some flames. Everybody is entitled to make their own conclusions, but that was mine

I met a traveller from an antique, rain soaked land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Odenmandias, Center of Centers:

The stuff is always piping hot and the chicken is delicious. They dont really put too much into the batter so its a pretty thin coating of that and a lot of chicken. I am nervous that his reliance on his athleticism may come back to bite him, given the nature of his injury. He may have to find other ways of getting open besides jumping higher than anyone else.

Martell seems to be back to where he was pre-injury… and he had the exact same injury, so that doesn’t worry me as much as if it was Joel’s injury or something involving leg muscles

Martell didn’t/doesn’t rely as much on jumping to get himself open. I think Martell just worked to dang hard that summer. Outlaws may actually be a symptom of the way he plays.

or that he worked too hard this summer as well, remember this is the first year he came into camp in shape… a stress fracture to the fifth metatarsal is not a jumping injury
Most fifth metatarsal fractures are caused by accidents that cannot be prevented. However it is important to wear proper fitting footwear and avoid playing or running on surfaces that are uneven.

bottom line. I don’t think either of them would pick up the necessary slack from losing Miller and Haywood won’t get this team to round 2. The only way this is ok, in my mind, is if Przy (knock on wood) is actually gonna have his career ended over this injury. We don’t need 3 centers and renting Haywood at the expense of Miller does not make sense in the short or long term.
by DrivetheLane on Jan 20, 2010 1:11 PM PST up reply actions
just remember miller is a short term rental as well. I don’t see any deal out there that guarantees getting to the second round, but in this case it would free up space to develop our young pg’s more for the future which is why I think this would get done over trading Blake

by The Arkitect on Jan 20, 2010 1:14 PM PST up reply actions
i'm not sold yet that Miller is just a rental.
i think we can win a championship with him as a starting PG instead of Bayless.

by DrivetheLane on Jan 20, 2010 1:14 PM PST up reply actions
I don’t like the idea of trading one of our bigs to get another big… I think we need to thin our deeper positions like pg or sf if we’re making a trade
#7, #10, #25, #52, #88
by The Arkitect on Jan 20, 2010 1:15 PM PST up reply actions
I'm not sure I'd consider Howard a "big"
in the sense that losing him hurts us depth wise. Pendergraph has shown he can play the 5 effectively enough to hold the fort for when Oden and Pryzbilla are back and then be the backup 4. Howard wouldn’t be here next season anyway most likely.
by DrivetheLane on Jan 20, 2010 1:21 PM PST up reply actions
ok, but neither Oden or Pryz are playing this year, and we need another Big this year… so why trade one rental Big for another? sure Haywood is better, but we need depth at the position this year otherwise why do the trade at all and not just ride it out with who we have?
#7, #10, #25, #52, #88
by The Arkitect on Jan 20, 2010 1:24 PM PST up reply actions

by DrivetheLane on Jan 20, 2010 1:25 PM PST up reply actions
This is pushing it
Blake + Patty Mills + Dante works for Haywood
Throw in the Draft pick this year and maybe a future and they might nibble.

I'll give Washington 50/50 on voiding his contract
He is untradeable since his contract is basically deadweight for four more years (I think) and ties up a lot of a team’s cap space.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I think it’s 80/20 they void it…

by The Arkitect on Jan 20, 2010 1:17 PM PST up reply actions
I would think that
But a gun charge is not an act demonstrating “moral turpintude”, as bad as it is. Dogfighting sure but unless there is a specific clause allowing a void in case of a felony, I don’t see it as that likely.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
i think his guilty plea brings that moral turpitude thing in to effect.
breaking the law is breaking the law. The Wiz will do whatever they can to void the contract and Stern won’t deny them if he doesn’t have to. the players union will most likely be the ones putting up a fight.
I think the contract gets voided.
by DrivetheLane on Jan 20, 2010 1:23 PM PST up reply actions
from what I read, the being charged with a felony is enough to void his contract under the morality clause

To avoid a prolonged suit though. Interesting to see how the NBA would handle that situation capwise.

And he’s been on a list as one of the best defenders for the whole season. So we’re getting pretty close to accepting a month at this point.
i'd go with a month too.
i know Webster is hot when he’s shooting the 3 really really well and making 4 or 5 a game. but even without being “hot” he’s still been perhaps the most consistent I’ve seen him in his career over the last 20 games or so.

From Randy Hill via Fox Sports.
COACH OF THE YEAR: Scott Brooks, Oklahoma City Thunder (Quarter-pole pick … Brooks). Houston’s Rick Adelman is a popular choice, but it sometimes can be easier coaching a team of low-paid overachievers with an us-against-the-world mentality. Adelman still would be a fine choice, but Brooks has actually transformed a team of young hotshots into one of the league’s top defensive squads.

Durant's no longer a significant liability. He's not great on that end, but his length does bother players at times.
Westbrook and Sefalosha put a ton of pressure on their opposite numbers. They just play hard and bother the other team.
Collison, Ibaka and Thomas do a pretty good job defensively on the interior, Ibaka in particular in my opinion.

I think that its really interesting
I found it when looking for dreaming about fancy restaurants yesterday. Going to one of these places would be awesome.
Keep the faith.
definately
but it looks like it’s crazy hard to get a “golden ticket”… I’ve been to a restaurant in Madrid for which he does the menu and is run by one of his disciples and it was AMAZING, but not quite as amazing as el Bulli seems :)
i couldn't help but wonder how much that meal must have cost.
i’m guessing it was 4 digits
by DrivetheLane on Jan 20, 2010 4:45 PM PST up reply actions
The restaurant has a limited season: the 2010 season, for example, will run from June 15 to December 20. Bookings for the next year are taken on a single day after the closing of the current season. The average cost of a meal is €250; the restaurant itself has operated at a loss since 2000, with operating profit coming from El Bulli-related books, and lectures from Adrià.
Keep the faith.
interesting.....
that they operate at a loss. that means the meal must be extremely reasonably priced. for that much i’d probably eat there once if i could get in. even those rabbit guts looked good.

Just had a very weird auction on ebay
The article description, ratings, etc. all looked good. But for some reason it constantly switched between offers made for the product and no offers made (starting price). The only explanation I have is that the seller was throwing out offers because he had set the starting price too low or wanted to make a private auction or something like that. I hope I didn’t end up with this, it got very weird at the end. I won’t transfer money for that if I did.

he’s almost too clinical. his movies all look fantastic, but completely lack emotion for me. i think the exception was the boot camp part of Full Metal Jacket and that was mostly due to DiNofrio.

That lack of emotion is what he's often going for
The common theme of his movies is the loss of humanity, so he often tries to get the performances to mirror that.

Until I read the Arthur C. Clark book that was written in tandem with the film….all the parts were there in the movie …but I was like “WTF was that all about?” after watching it. I read the book a little later and then went “Ahhhh!! So that is what the cavemen ..and the space ships..and the star child was all about!!”

well the short story is the scene at the beginning when the monkeys see the first monolith, is when the evolution of man from the animals is sparked,
by an outside entity which could best be described as god. Not a denominational god, but rather one born of more universal principles. Immediately after it’s appearance the monkeys become aware and begin to use technology, in this case the bone. Fast forward to the next scene and we see a spaceship in the exact shape of the bone, symbolic of the breadth of our evolution but holding true to its origins, albeit not consciously. In this time man has progressed to the point where he has mastered his environment totally (in his mind) although he has still not moved past the violent tendencies which have driven his evolution. At this point the need for god in man’s world has subsided. This is when the new monolith appears as a reminder that man has essentially mastered nothing, and has just reached a minor understanding of his place in the universe. But he is arrogant and man’s arrogance even goes so far as to give his intelligence to a machine, and in doing this, man plays god. But he does not have the wisdom to give the machine proper reasoning, and in doing so, creates a dilemma in the machine that leads to his own destruction. The only one who is not destroyed is David Bowman, because he can see enough the arrogance of man, and is deemed evolved enough to make another step towards universal enlightenment, his rebirth is illustrated with the starbaby. I hope that comes across alright, it’s hard to read the whole thing in this tiny window.

I took some time to watch an episode of Cheers on my DVR
lol…I think you pretty much nailed for the most part got more out of it than I did (such as the sub-text about technology and the ongoing need for God). The God (or as Clarke envisioned it, an alien intelligence) found the hominids (proto-humans) suitable for an evolutionary nudge. The modern Humans found a second monolith on the moon …this was a signal to the alien intelligence that Humanity had evolved enough to leave their own planet and were ready for the next step in evolution. The mission to Jupiter followed the signal sent out by the 2nd monolith. The computer stuff on the trip (and the events that followed) was implied (in the novel) to be caused by the alien intelligence as method of getting David Bowman for the final step of the evolution …the star child. The subtext the you discerned about the interactions with HAL and technology general was pretty well done in the movie …but wasn’t mentioned in Clarke’s novel.
It should be noted that while Clarke and Kubrick outlined the story together, the screenplay and novel were written simultaneously..so they have some minor differences ….like which planet the Discovery was going to ….Saturn instead of Jupiter….(no biggy, right?)

i liked it so much because it seemed to say that the politics and all that other stuff didn’t matter. for the soldiers, it was all about sticking with the guy next to you. Eric Bana delivers that line, which I think is the core of the film.

This was my take on the movie as well
the soldiers do what they’re ordered to do, and they have their fellow soldier’s backs. If anything, I saw the last scene or so as an anti-war commentary – the general tries to clean up the bloody mess on the ground floor of the field hospital, and he ends up making it worse. I saw that as an analogy for the US military presence in Somalia, but that’s just my read on it.

i now realize that just having it there was a statement. same thing with the movie. when you have a government institution in a movie, politics come in to play. perhaps not overtly, but they are there. even what blazeraddict is saying, the movie is making a political statement by being anti-war.

depending on what happens at the Oscars, Crash could stand as the worst movie to win Best Picture.

That film would look great in 3D. Imagine the runner coming right at you when running at the beach.
Rocky in 3D would be 10 times better. Running and boxing in your face.

Oscar snubs (my personal selection in no particular order)
Martin Scorsese not winning for Goodfellas. Instead it went to Kevin Costner.
Stanley Kubrik not winning for 2001.
Citizen Kane did not win best picture. It went to How Green Was My Valley.
Vincent D’Onofrio not winning best supporting actor for Full Metal Jacket.
Marlene Dietrich not winning anything for Witness for the Prosecution. Not sure even the movie did win anything.
James Cagney winning an Oscar for Yankee Doodle Dandy but for nothing else.
Jack Nicholson not winning for The Shining.
Gene Kelly not winning for Singin’ in the Rain.
Sidney Poitier not winning for In the Heat of the Night.
Anthony Perkins not winning for Psycho tied with Jimmy Stewart not winning for Vertigo.
you forgot
Raging Bull losing to Ordinary People. which is the greatest mistake in the history of the Oscars.

A few observations on the "Point" guards tonight.
1. Tom in Hawaii hates awesome players cause they’re so awesome. Clearly he is jealous, or fearful of Andre Miller, cause he is awesome and we are lucky to have him, cause if we didn’t we wouldn’t have won that game, I don’t care who else we had once Roy left the game I was like “OH CRap” and then he was playing and I was like “SWEET”. And then we won, so in your Face TIH.
2. Jerry Bayless can run like the wind.
3. Steve Blake is great if you want someone to completely stop the offensive progression, say like pushing the pause button on the fast break, he is also really good at making the worst pass available on the floor ie; passing into a double team, or passing to the audience. He is also really good at not taking open shots, Nate must love this because it does not instantly result in a turnover, this also give Steve time to wind down the shot clock and then make a pass to someone who isn’t expecting it, or B can’t do anything with it, and then the shot clock expires while someone else has the ball and then Blake’s all “YOUR BAD!” He plays nate like he plays the basketball game like a suckerface.
4. Patty Mills was completely forgettable in tonights game, the experiment is over it’s time for the team to do the right thing and trade mills for Lebron James and Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul.
I was blinded to that by sick alley-oops and facials

Macgruber movie red band trailer
filmdrunk sums it up nicely:
I’ll be honest, I thought making a movie out of the MacGruber sketches was a colossally stupid idea at first. But let one of the Lonely Island guys direct, throw in fat Val Kilmer as a villain named "Dieter von Cunth", and make it a hard-R rating, suddenly I’m cautiously optimistic. I also love Kristen Wiig whenever she’s not playing Gilly or the Target lady. .

I think he would be the most special in a system like Utah’s, where it has order and good halfcourt schemes with a bunch of cutting off picks, a system that relies on everyone being able to pass. They also run quite a bit, so he could use both of his main skill sets: breaking and offensive movement.

His D is much better and he has a great "whatever it takes to win tude"
He is a much better player than Steve in just about every way[not hating on Steve]

agreed
I wonder if it’d be better off for both parties if Rudy was traded.. considering Portland would probably get good talent back and Rudy would get a chance to maximize his talents in a different system

I don’t want to make serious personnel decisions because our system has issues. A system is easier to find than a Rudy.

I agree
but if Blazers management decides that this system is the right one of the future…..

then there is a big issue in management, because our offense is pretty easy for good teams to scout in a playoff series.

i want to see more data before i come to a conclusion
Houston was the absolute worst matchup for us in the playoffs last year. Plus, Portland probably wins that series if they don’t come out so terrified in Game 1 anyways.

A system that emphasizes no fastbreak points, very little interior play, and isolation is not hard to scheme against. Good coaches have given us fits already by simply sending a trap at Brandon when he’s above the three point line.

with oden out
who are we going to rely on in the interior?
I feel like we were really starting to emphasize getting the ball into Oden before he got hurt

we were? Maybe he was getting more touches, but that was mostly Andre force-feeding him, and there was an article written by Jaynes the day after his injury talking about Oden not getting touches.
It is an offense that is possibly the most basic in the NBA, that is built around jump shots and isolation. Trying to build players around this scheme is insane to me.

He's a motion/transition player trapped in an isolation/halfocurt offense
It’s frustrating, I’m not suggesting Nate tailor the team to Rudy, but we have some good athletes who can move and pass – we should do this

when he does he dribbles for 15 seconds then does a turn around fade away

but that turn around fade away is not a good shot

if you want to complain about people dribbling around and jacking up a shot, Rudy is like sixth on the list of Blazers. He barely makes ‘em, but at least he doesn’t take that many.

his one major weakness is his inability off the dribble, but he knows that and doesn’t try to do it often

To quote Norsk yesterday, this is what you missed:
* Greatest monsters
* Tom hating Miller (and why?)
* Something about chicken, cooking and cold feet
* Women, am I right?
* Some basketball/game discussions
* Politics
* Other random discussions and pictures
I think Norsk nailed it pretty well.
