Celtics' Allen: Limit fans' role in All-Star voting
Celtics guard Ray Allen thinks it's time to limit fans' influence in All-Star voting, with Allen Iverson and Tracy McGrady, despite having little to no impact this season, both headed into the final hours of voting in position to start.

I bet the commish will have some influence on McGrady magically not making it into the starting lineup.
It would be a PR nightmare if McGrady made the lineup. Totally negates any credibility lent to what being an “All-Star” means.

2 suggestion
can’t take credit for either.
1) the less dramatic of a change option: go with the NFL model. Results of fan vote counts for 1/3, coaches vote is the other 1/3, and player vote is the final 1/3. or mix and match
2) I read this last year, and still like it. have the coaches (or could be players, or a combination of both), select the 12 all stars for each team. Announce these in late January to great fanfare. At that point, the fans can vote on the starters, having to pick from among the 12 players on each team. vote would be held by phone, text, internet, etc. allows fans to still pick the starters without the possibility of an undeserving player making the game.
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

I love the second idea.
That would be a great way to do it.
The NBA- so easy a Kaman can do it
I like 2 as well.
Have the players/coaches voting for people not on their team.

Ah, didn't see this before my post below
I could get behind this too. As long the players and coaches decide the team. Still gives fans something. Do it Stern.
i agree

its all about money
every time you vote T Mobile knows you saw their name…and they pay a hefty sum to be sponsors so they deserve that recognition.
however there is already a mechanism that recognizes the BEST players…the All NBA team…that is the one that should mean something, yet people still put a lot of emphasis on the AS team
All Star – most popular
All NBA – best players
I'm going on a Dave boycott until AK1984 is brought back.

I don't get the point of voting in someone like AI or McGrady at this point in their careers
can their fans really be THAT excited to see them loaf around and go 2-9 in the ASG? Do they just live vicariously through their favorite basketball player? "OMG Iverson made the ASG game again My life is complete!
You won.

I like fan voting for all star games because all star games are ultimately for the fans
But it’s gotten out of hand in the NBA. I think commissioner Stern will “fix” the results and we won’t see TMac in the game.
As for AI, well have you seen the Eastern Conference guards? Third in voting is Vince Carter! Fourth is Ray Allen! Neither of those guys deserve to start. I don’t really have much of a problem with AI getting in as long as Rondo, Derrick Rose, and Joe Johnson are on the team because IMO those are the only other Eastern guards who deserve to be all stars, and all 3 are borderline all stars.
In the West, Deron Williams probably won’t make the team even if TMac doesn’t start, which is a shame because he deserves to be in the game. But if TMac does get the start another deserving player like Billups or even Roy won’t be in the game.
Part of the problem may be that the NBA hasn't done a great job marketing new superstars.
Thus many fans cling to the old stand-bys. Or it could be a sign that less people are actually watching the games (but still taking a passing interest, so they vote for names they know).
the chinese vote skews it
notice all the rockets with high vote totals
The Leeroy Rule: being insistent >>>> being correct
Take fans all the way out
I know many won’t agree with that, since fans generate the dollars and it’s all for the fans, but it’s just not fair to more deserving players when China is stuffing the ballot box for tmac and team’s fans are casting votes for their own players even if they clearly don’t deserve it.
I say let the players select the starters (with the caveat that they can’t choose themselves or their teammates), and coaches choose the reserves as they currently do. Like Allen says, the players (and coaches) are the ones who know who has been playing well.
Media having a say, eh? I even feel like some of them have too much of an axe to grind. It just feels like players and coaches are most apt to give respect where respect is due.
Let's make everyone happy
Just build the roster by jersey sales. If you want TMac on the court you better put your money where your mouth is and shell out $69.95 for some threads. Maybe make it an official “voters” jersey with a logo on the shoulder and tag ten bucks onto the price.
Now Stern makes his money AND stupid fans can still cast stupid votes.
