I'm going to dream...

…of a post season miracle where we hang tough, slide into the playoffs and Greg makes a super-human return to action in time to compliment the heart and guts in took from the other guys to get us there… it’s good to dream!

GO BLAZERS!!!… get well Greg!

While it would be nice to have him back

I don’t think its worth the risk. At all. We should all want him 100% when he comes back, and not even so much as 90%.

Get well soon, #52

Please Greg, no cane. Get a walking stick, a really BIG walking stick

that you can clunk people on the head with when they start the, “Greg Oden is old”, joke-a-thon.

The more important thing

is that he can have the entire off season to train so he’ll come back where he left off.

by ericande on Jan 14, 2010 10:05 AM PST reply actions

I love Greg and all

but I don’t want to rush him.

I have a son coming off a broken leg and my fatherly side is having the same precautionary feelings towards Greg.

I'm skeptical about Oden's potential impact on the team

when he gets back, particularly given that he’s been pretty raw. Witness Bynum’s lack of impact last year.

I do think it would be huge for Greg, though, to psychologically prove he can get back and also have another full offseason to train. Just need Paul Allen to call up Hakeem and have him run Greg ragged in the post for a couple hours a day over those couple months now.

I agree

The psychological benefit could be worth it, depending on his mindset.

Lots of medical experts on here, aren’t there? Who knows whether it would be rushing it or not for him to come back?

I agree on the psychological impact,

not only for Greg, but how about the other team. That would mess with their heads.
He doesn’t have to do a lot of leaping to give an inside scores pause, and, no need to be pulling him for fouls… :-),
after all, we don’t mind limiting his minutes. Have some fun out there, Greg.

I agree as well

There’s something different about a season ending injury & an injury that just wipes out most of the season, from a psychological standpoint. If he can get back for even a couple games this year, I think that would lessen the urgency he may feel all summer long and therefore give him a head start as to getting into the groove next year.

Of course, don’t play him before he’s healthy. That’s a no-brainer. But what a joy it would be if he was truly healthy and ready to go for a couple of games this year!

by zbrum on Jan 14, 2010 2:07 PM PST up reply actions

My only worry is that even if he's fit to play again

he’ll be too rusty and end up with some scoreless games. I think that would hurt his confidence even more.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

It would be nice

But I don’t want him to rush it, if he’s healthy around playoffs time that’s fine but it takes time to get into game shape and while I’ll take a rusty Greg over grandpa I’d rather see him be 100% and in game shape come next year.

I'm not saying, I'm just saying.

by RyanRTE on Jan 14, 2010 10:23 AM PST reply actions

Based on the original time-line

for recovery, Greg could be back in May and full stride in June.

Nate left open the door at the time by saying “unlikely” return, but
also set the stage for a ‘miracle’ comeback.

He would make a difference.

Greg Oden is the Blazers Edge!

Save him for next year. There is no need to take a chance. Barring a miracle, there is no chance we make it very far in the playoffs anyway.

The tall one replies, "No, if you were me, I'd be short."

I'd rather he take the full time off

And be close to if not at 100% in October.

What an amazing story it would be

We are a team firing on about 7 cylinders right now. With Greg back we instantly jump up in terms of height, and we can arguably match up with any other team in the NBA.

I genuinely think that there’s a good chance he’ll be back. Bones typically heal up stronger than they were originally, and he didn’t have any ligament or tendon damage. After about 3 more weeks of real recovery he’ll probably be able to go full force in the gym. and shortly there after full force in practice.

I need to go to that game — the circle will be complete. I was there when he went down, and I want to see him get back up again.

If Rudy thought his ovation was loud — Greg’s will be insane!

It would be a huge psychological boost for Greg to come back this year.

Greg, Pendy, DC, and Jerryd may have more in common than people realize. They all have the determination of a bull dog. This young secondary core has what we really need, toughness . Greg said it when he went down and he is still saying it now, “I’ll be back!” That may sound like a line out of a movie, and it is, but you just can’t keep guys with attitudes like that down—make it real GO. Over the next couple years the doubters are going to be like fleas jumping off a dog that just got a super duper flea collar.

I believe

the sooner he returns the better. He just needs to be on the court. Getting a couple weeks of basketball in at the end and THEN having the summer to continue the rehab, conditioning, basketball drills, etc would be great.

Unless he gets re-injured. But what are the odds of that?!?!?!?

by StuckeyDuck on Jan 14, 2010 12:53 PM PST reply actions

If he's healthy, he plays.

None of this lets save ‘em til next year garbage. we might as well call up the D League and rest everyone since this season doesn’t really count.

by JK47 on Jan 14, 2010 1:10 PM PST reply actions

Good idea!

LMA could really improve his post moves with some playing time in the D League! :)

by JonathanPDX on Jan 14, 2010 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

I have been hoping he would be back for the playoffs.

We are playing well enough to get there. We will certainly need all the help we can get. If the doctors clear him, go for it. What a great comeback, and nice visibility for the “Bowie” crowd.
I was thinking of keeping it as much of a secret as possible till game day, then “surprise” Greg be playin’ tonight". Time to review your game plan. As we noticed before, Greg on the floor impacts the game.
Great help, great experience, great media hype, pretty much great !

Willis Reed

What happened to this season???? It went under the surgeon's knife. But its not over yet. Hold tough. This team will be battle hardened. Tough. Honed to a fine edge. They will be playing playoff style – nine man rotation – for a significant portion of the season. Dividends will be paid. - Tiparillo on Dec 15, 2009 11:48 AM PST on Game 26 Preview: Kings vs. Blazers on Blazersedge

Greg will not be back this year so that we can get insurance to pick up the tab

on his salary.

As far as “rushing him back”, that’s bunk. If he’s pain-free with a clean bill of health let him play. That’s like saying Rudy shouldn’t be playing right now because we “don’t want to rush him”. If a player is pain-free, let him play.

Patty Mills - PG of the future. Book it.

by Blazerholic on Jan 14, 2010 3:21 PM PST reply actions

Agree.

I was going to post something, but Blazerholic pretty much sums it up. When his patella is totally healed, Greg should play as soon as he is back in shape. But you’re right, the Vulcans would rather have the insurance money, probably to pay Pete Carroll.

by vanceanthony on Jan 14, 2010 3:44 PM PST up reply actions

If it ended up making the difference

between making the playoffs or missing them, the Vulcans would rather have him back.

If it is the difference between a first round exit or making the second round, they would rather have him back.

If it is the difference between a four game sweep in the first round at the hands of the L@kers or losing a seven game battle, with an extra home game, perhaps more television revenue, etc, they might well prefer having him back.

Merchandise sales of Oden jerseys will probably be a lot higher if he comes back. Media hype over the team is always good for the finances, and this would generate a lot of hype.

Here’s what the Vulcans DON’T want. They don’t want Nate to resign because Greg was ready, and Nate wanted to play him, but they held Greg out for financial reasons.

If he is cleared by the doctors to play, the insurance probably won’t pay his salary even if he doesn’t play. The insurance is there to cover when a guy can’t play, not when his team holds him out.

If we're down 3-0....

in some series, and Greg has been looking awesome in practice, let him in… (I realize financial insurance conditions may overrule this). But I’d like to see him play again.. he was REALLY getting it…
