Trade Drawer...Bosh?

Well, this has been an amazing season, following an unbelievably unfortunate and unlucky start to the season.  The team has rallied to get some great wins.  It's surely and exciting thing to see.

Star-divide

The one problem is, I feel as if we are treading water.  Outside of Bayless, of course Webster, and the sporadic playing time of Cunningham and Pendergraph, none of the developments appear as if they will have a positive benefit for our team next year.  Roy was already RAW, so it's not really a surprise he is shouldering the team as he is.  I mean, its Roy.  This reality led me to think, how could we improve our team this year, without sacrificing our team next year, or duplicating strengths?

I think trading for Chris Bosh, though a STRETCH, would be a great move.  Toronto is adamantly claiming they woiuld not trade him, but come one....he's not coming back we all know that.  Just the same way we all KNEW Kobe WAS going back to the Lakers.  It just is what it is.   The deal will revolve around Lamarcus Aldridge.  Since they would likely demand him, and other young talent in the trade.  Also, it would not rob them of ALL frontcourt talent outside of Bargnani.

Espn Trade Machine Money Workings

Proposed Trade:

TORONTO:

sends: Chris Bosh

receives: Lamarcus Aldridge, Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw, rights to victor claver, rights to Petteri Koponen, and possibly a first round pick

PORTLAND

sends: Lamarcus Aldridge, Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw, rights to victor claver, rights to Petteri Koponen, and possibly a first round pick

receives: Chris Bosh

Why would this trade entice Toronto?

Well...for one it is better, IMHO, than the trades suggested by ESPN.

Laker Proposal (Chad Ford): For instance the proposed "Andrew Bynum for Chris Bosh" trade.  Well, Bynum is certainly better than L-Train, now.  Might not be said for the furture, also he seems to lose focus.  In addition, Toronto would receive a plethora more talent, possibilities, and building blocks with out deal than the Laker deal.  I mean Bynum is nice, but with ours they receive $8 million in immediate salary relief, significant long-term relief when comparing the Aldridge and Bosh salaries, and not having to worry about resigning him later.  That doesn't even account for the European talent being Offered. Koponen is still developing but Claver is an NBA ready player.  The potential for a first round pick should also sweeten the deal.  Thefore our proposal should be MUCH more enticing.

Houston Proposal (Marc Stein):  This just seems foolish....without sending the cap relief that is McGrady's contract...i fail to see how any combination of players they have could yield Chris Bosh...However, we did see Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol just a few years ago, I digress.  Trevor Ariza, Carl Landy, Aaron Brooks, and Luis Scola....I might rather have Bynum...Plus, if they are all traded...who is left to play with Bosh?  Our deal is definitely better than this.

Other Possible Proposals:

Miami: They may throw something like this together, but that doesn't seem appealing to anyone except a cost cutting team... SEVERELY cost cutting.  They wont trade O'neal back there, seems redundant.  So It appears that Chalmers and/or Beasley would be shipped out in this deal.  Meh.  They would probably have to include picks and cash but, their assets don't really compare to our trade, and again...I might just take Bynum and picks...

New York: This is intriguing, since they will have major cap this summer...The trade would likely look something like this.  It makes sense since New York has desperately wanted to get rid of Curry...but WHO WANTS CURRY? !?!?  No one, thats why he's still on the team and has only played....84 minutes for them in two years...62 of them this year in 8 games...Come one...the Knicks won't even SHOWCASE him...he MUST suck.  This is an interesting trade sine they can send out Lee, a very good player.  Too bad they have no draft picks to sweeten the pot...Cash maybe?  I take our deal over this.

Chicago: Their proposal maybe along the lines of this.  Not really overwhelming.  They do not have the necessary pieces to nab Bosh and not duplicate talent already on the Raptors, or simply deplete their frontline.  Intriguing but it makes more sense for them to go after Boozer than Bosh.

Therefore, I feel our deal is the most beneficial to the Raptors, when considering the suggested deals.  As I stated before, the combination of Salary relief, young talent, overseas talent, and potential draft pick(s) is much more appealing than other combinations put forth.  However If they do not bite, I would not oppose adding Fernandez or Bayless (prollly wont take him since they have calderon and Jack) and cash considerations while taking out Claver, and our first rounder.

Oh, and to all those that are worried about not resigning him over the summer...well...I think we are a team with the most likely to improve given our players returning from injury...Batum and Fernandez are coming back soon. We will have finished with a winning record and made the playoffs (of course if we have BOSH and ROY), Pryzbilla, and Oden will be back next year....SO the future will look as bright as any in portland as opposed to going to signing with New York or the Nets.

I would love Bosh...

but I think it would be better to pursue him in a sign and trade this summer that way we know he would be around and Aldridge trades at his 12 million dollar level. I also think throwing in Rudy would make Toronto more likely to do the deal. Although Bargnani and LMA would be the softest front court in the history of the game (ok that may be a stretch).

I am just not sure pulling hte trigger on something like this now

is all that helpful…I mean it is not like adding Bosh will make us a deep playoff team this season, it will solidify our chances to get into the playoffs sure, but the team has got to be thinking longer term than tht at this point. I want more of our guys back from injury and performing well to strengthen our bargaining position. Right now teams will not deal evenly with us at all because of our injury situation. Hold pat until summer when any move we me make is more likely to reflect real value for value.

Only two things would hold up from this,

1, will bosh play here long term

2, would toronto do it

If both answers are yes, PULL THE FREAKIN TRIGGER!!.

Love ya LMA but after how much we have needed you this year, my friend you really havent shown up. As much need as we have for him he should be posting career numbers. We see him take over for stretched and i know im not alone in thinking “ok, here we go…..he is gonna go on a tear like he did last year.” But he hasnt yet……WE NEED HIM TO! I love the guy, but great players step up the most when needed the most. Brandon Roy

My guesses...

1. Well, if he wants to win, yes. Whichever stripped team that he goes to play with LeBron or Wade, our team is better. Now, if he is more interested in shopping or living in the big city, probably not.

2. It seems that Toronto would only entertain trading Bosh if they knew for sure that they can’t re-sign him this summer. Now, even though it seems like Bosh leaving is a sure thing for some people (me included), Toronto obviously has not abandoned hope yet. If Bosh goes to Colangelo and tells him that he won’t re-sign, they’ll move him…and the offer by itself seems more than fair, IMHO.

while this trade works

I think we would have to include Bayless or Rudy or Batum in the deal to make it a better deal than the Laker deal, (if the Lakers really are offering Bynum). Bynum would give them a legit front court, by letting them move the softest “center” in the NBA to power forward. In fact I wouldn’t mind sending Joel with LMA to them if they believe he will recover from this injury, getting Bosh would be worth losing Joel, LMA, and either Rudy or Bayless in my opinion. That type of deal though wouldn’t be considered until this summer as a sign and trade, which is why i feel Toronto will do.

by usmcr3049 on Jan 12, 2010 3:04 PM PST reply actions

From Toronto's perspective

Do you really want LMA and Bargnani as your front court?

by Escrote on Jan 12, 2010 3:06 PM PST up reply actions

no,

which is why I would do the Bynum deal instead. But if that deal is off the table, getting LMA+Rudy or Bayless would still be pretty good talent in return.

by usmcr3049 on Jan 12, 2010 9:29 PM PST up reply actions

Not for me! Trading away LMA + Joel + Blake +Outlaw + 1st rd pick + Bayless/Rudy +Claver+Koppenn?

That’s way too much man. Aldridge is not that bad guys, LMA + Outlaw + 1st rd pick + Claver would be more than enough. With Bosh having only 6 months left on his contract, we are the ones taking the huge risk. And now you want to give them even more players? What are you, a Raptors fan?

by VinnyB on Jan 13, 2010 3:31 AM PST up reply actions

I think you misunderstood me

I was not saying to trade LMA, Jole, Blake, outlaw, Bayless, Claver, Koppenn, and a 1st round pick for Bosh. I was saying I would make a different trade than what was propose in the OP, not just add to it. A trade of LMA, Rudy, Blake and Outlaw would work I believe, and would be a good trade for both teams. If we were to include Joel, the trade would have to be Joel, LMA, Rudy, for Bosh+someone’s contract to make it work, (not sure who that would be, I am too lazy right now to look it up). I would still do this deal, Bosh is much better than LMA is now, and we have no evidence that LMA will improve, infact this year’s start has shown us that maybe LMA has reached his performace level in the NBA.

Why give up all that talent...

when there’s no way of knowing he would return next year?? doesn’t make sense.

by jenstcy on Jan 12, 2010 3:12 PM PST reply actions

why would he not want to resign?

promising young core and Portland could offer him more than any other team? I personally would prefer a sign and trade after the season but I don’t understand how you can say he would walk. Do you have some inside info or sources or something?

by Escrote on Jan 12, 2010 4:00 PM PST up reply actions

To play with Wade or Lebron.

I remember last summer during the olympics the rumors coming out about how badly he wanted to play with either of them after getting so close to them. Bosh is a bona fide superstar. We couldn’t even convince Hedo to sign here. Hedo doesn’t have near the opportunities that Bosh would have in a big media market for endorsements.

Don’t get me wrong, I would like Bosh. But this trade would be a HUGE risk. One that could cripple our window real quick.

Even if he walks, it gives us 10 to 11 million to play with in 2010.

Sure, the guy we sign with that money is probably not as good as Bosh, but at least on a similar level with Aldridge.

Another option could be a lopsided trade for a big money guy. Given such, there are some options even if Bosh walks

I dunno. Very good team and he can get more money from us that anyone. I would think it sounds pretty attractive to Bosh. Also, he probably does fit quite well in “Keep Portland Weird” scheme.

If Toronto doesn't think Bosh is coming back (I don't)

then they would jump all over this deal.

And if Portland knew for sure that Bosh would resign here long term, I think we’d do it too. Bosh is a bonafide superstar.

That being said, this will never happen. Blazers would never roll the dice like that because if Bosh doesnt resign, we just gave away one of our building blocks (although I do believe it would give us some cap space, portland has had an awful history of attracting big free agents)

Get well Greg! Rip City is still behind you!

NBA ready?

I think that’s a real stretch. His career stats don’t exactly jump out and excite me. Not sure if those stats include his most recent play. I would say without a doubt the kid has NBA potential and he certainly has a variety of skills. Ready to me means he would be able to go out for most any team and contribute and I just that’s an overly optimistic appraisal of his current value. I do think he could be included in a trade though to sweeten any potential deal.

Brandon Jennings...

he didn’t exactly put up “NBA ready” stats last year but appears “NBA ready”. The Euro game isn’t all about individual stats like the US game.

I've seen exactly 1 game, mind you... But I have serious issues with the line "Claver is an NBA ready player."

That may or may not be the case, but it is HIGHLY QUESTIONABLE at a minimum.

I am not questioning whether or not he is "NBA ready"

I am just saying stats are deceiving in Euro ball and using Jennings as an example. If you have seen him play I trust your opinion over mine because I have only seen highlights and anyone with any skill looks good on a highlight reel.

but i dont think they want a point gaurd long term. they have calderon for 4 years and jack for 3, i think. Andre doesn’t make sense. Also, he is not expiring. Furthermore, I would rather have him than blake as our starting guard in Portland.

by kajuayn on Jan 12, 2010 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

Of course we wouldn't know for sure

But I would say the chances would be high. I can think of 4 main factors in determining whether anyone would sign:

1. Money
2. Chance to win a championship
3. Role on team (does he get his shots?)
4. Likes the city
5. Money (it’s important, and counts for 2)

#1/5: Since we would be able to offer a longer contract & more years than anyone else, money is taken care of.
#2: yes
#3: yes, he’ll be #1a with Roy
#4: this is the only question mark, and only because PDX is a small market. But the other 4 factors are pro-PDX, so I think the chances are good enough to go for it. I would say it would be a 90-95% chance he would re-sign.

This is the Trade Drawer so I'm gonna drop a new one down . . .

I do not like the Chris Bosh idea honestly, it sort of fits, but I don’t think he’d necessarily stay here. Either way it brings a good degree of uncertainty into an otherwise solid future. I feel like we’d be better off cutting some loose ends and renting a competent center.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yl6zkbp

Washington Receives: Portland Receives:
Travis Outlaw (F) Brenden Haywood ©
Steve Blake (PG) Dominic McGuire (SF)
Jeff Pendergraph (PF)

Brenden Haywood brings an intimidating presence back to the paint, and is a good-sized expiring contract to boot, meaning we wouldn’t have too many good centers on the roster next season. Dominic McGuire is a cap scrubber. Travis Outlaw has done good things here in Portland, and I love him to death. The same can be said for Steve Blake, but unfortunately I think it’s time for them to go. They are both expiring contracts as well, and would give Washington a good backup for Butler/Jamison at the 3/4, as well as a reliable PG in Blake who could soften the blow of Arenas’ suspension. Jeff Pendergraph is the choice I’d make over Dante Cunningham, but really it could be either one of them here.

At the end of the season this list of names dissolves into free agency, leaving both teams with open cap space (Washington with about $1.5 million more). As a kicker Washington would have an able young player to provide a backup banger in Pendergraph. I think this trade would work well with their roster, centering around Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison and working outward. Unfortunately one of those two is likely to be traded, so who knows whether this trade would have any chance or not. What do you think?

I think Bosh is utterly fed-up with being so unknown when he is so good.

Therefore a big part of the equation to him will be gaining maximum exposure. Portland cannot offer this. We just don’t get covered the same way as they do on the East Coast.

ignacio

by ignacio on Jan 13, 2010 1:33 AM PST reply actions

This would be just what Portland needs

I would give Toronto LMA, Outlaw, Blake and Bayless for Bosh. But ignacio is right – I can’t imagine Bosh coming here when he can get top dollar and play in a city that gets more exposure.

Also, I am still not convinced how well Brandon would play with someone that is of the same talent level. The issues with Oden and Miller make me think Brandon has some maturing to do as a player.

If Bosh and Roy could learn to play well together it would be one of the most, if not the most, devastating 1-2 punches in the league for quite some time.

by lil'stink on Jan 13, 2010 9:33 AM PST reply actions

Big 3

It seems to me that Roy + Bosh + Oden would be an incredibly versatile Big 3, each augmenting what the other does well and each bringing something different to the table. A good fit, as Dave would say. I know it didn’t click right away between Roy and Oden this year, but I think it was part of the necessary growth process as oppossed to proof that the two cannot mesh.

by zbrum on Jan 13, 2010 9:40 AM PST up reply actions

Portland doesn't need Chris Bosh. Portland needs the PF they already have to start playing like one.

i'll probably get ripped for this...

but i don’t think chris bosh is really all that superior of a player. i feel like a lot of his stats are based on the fact that he has been the #1 (and usually only) option on a pretty bad team. if you look at his stats, he is essentially zach randolph plus 1/2 block per game. yes, he is a better defender than z-bo but he is far from being a dwight howard presence on defense. while he is a better player than LA right now, i don’t know that he would be THAT much better than LA as a 2nd option. I guess my opinion is that we would be trading a lot of talent for a guy that is slightly more talented than LA and extremely more expensive.

by retirecards51 on Jan 13, 2010 10:13 AM PST reply actions

LMA still has upside. He just needs to figure out how to work low as well as hit 15 foot turnarounds...

I don’t know if he ever will, but he’s still young enough that there’s hope, at least.

Trade A:

Trade C:

5. Oden/Haywood

Steve Blake (expiring contract)

Toronto Gets:

Travis Outlaw

That is why these trades will never happen. Much of Portland's talent has relativley cheap contracts and the team has no big contract to throw

in a filler. Therefore you have to throw way to much talent in a trade to get a big name.

Is Bosh better than LMA ? Yes?

Is he is he Fernandez+Blake+ Outlaw better? No way.
