Steve Blake Hospitalized With Pneumonia
A text message from the team....
---------------------------------
Steve Blake admitted to a local-area hospital where he is being treated for pneumonia. Expected to remain hospitalized for a few days and is out indefinitely.
---------------------------------
Brian T. Smith has some more details here.
Feels like Groundhog Day or April Fool's Day, not New Year's Day.
One thing to watch tomorrow night against the Golden State Warriors: who plays down the stretch in Blake's absence, Andre Miller or Martell Webster? Joe Freeman has a nice piece on Miller not closing games recently here. Against the small-ball Warriors Miller figures to get the nod.

PS CoRBBall and Blazerland beat me to the punch in the Fanshots.
PPS. LaMarcus Aldridge is listed as doubtful (left ankle sprain) for tomorrow night.

Well fortunately we're not short on guards
Maybe Patty Mills can see some playing time. I hope this leads to more Miller at the fourth quarter as well. Either way though, Steve Blake is still an important part of this team. Hope he gets well. Pneumonia doesn’t sound fun
The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.
Kings fan
Just saw that;
Its actually the Twilight Zone…
Roy is gonna take a game off – just in case – and they’ll call up Mills. Webster is hiding in the closet.
The new starting line-up:
Howard
Pendergraph
Cunningham
Bayless
Mills
Miller and Shav off the bench.
And they win again somehow!

Any win with that starting 5
would make my (new) year!
What are you impressions of Roy?
"He's just a very, very good basketball player. Very smart. Very heady. He can do a little bit of everything on the court. As coaches, when we scout Portland we kind of put him in the same category as Kobe (Bryant), LeBron (James), Dwyane Wade. We treat him the same. He's that good."

I would think that if anyone could have hope
it would be a Warriors fan. Except we’re playing the Warriors. I doubt they have much hope for us tomorrow.

Last I heard LA is still a game time decision too.
Boy am I glad we were the deepest team in the league, 1 through 19.

Can we all agree to call him LMA?
It makes my fingers bleed to type it without the M.

Who is "LA" anyway?
where does he play?
is he related to LaMarcus Aldridge?

Possible lineup for tomrrow night:
1 Miller
2 Roy
3 Webster
4 Pendergraph
5 Howard
Bayless backing up 1-2
Cunninghan backing up the 3-4
Randolph backing up the 4-5
I hope Aldridge’s ankle sprain isn’t that bad. Though I would rather see him get healthy than try and play and aggravate it.
πεντήκοντα δύο
i would expect Cunningham to start at the 4
with Pendy backing up both frontcourt spots. wow, just wow.
this also probably increases the likelihood that LMA tries to go, even if he shouldn’t
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.
-Nate McMillan Postgame, 3/4/2009
Pendergraph started the second half
against LAC. I somewhat expect him to start against the Warriors, with Shavlik backing up the 4-5 and Cunningham backing up 3-4. I don’t expect a lot of 3 guard lineup, because, well, we only have three guards now.

He was playing better, too
Maybe we have a reason why his shot’s been off this season. Pneumonia builds for a long time, typically, so it’s a real tribute to his drive that he was not only playing while ill, but actually getting better while physically getting worse.
Hopefully he responds quickly to treatment, but he could be gone for several weeks.
Pneumonia can take a some time to get over
I know it stinks for the team, but it really stinks for Steve. Two days in the hospital? Hopefully he’s doing ok.
unfreaking believeable.
brandon roy is the only real good blazer left on the playing roster
Not true.
Everyone seems to forget Andre Miller. Even if he’s struggling in the system, he’s still a very good player. Plus LMA might be back.
On top of that, we’ve recently seen how good KP is with scouting. Cunningham is serviceable, Pendergraph is ready to cover toughness and rebounding, Shavlik knows the system and can handle spot minutes, plus Howard has found a mini fountain of youth.
I feel sorry for any team who comes into Portland and underestimates the current roster, or the fans who will cheer like crazy for them.
You are right, of course.
I tend to be hyperbolic, which is not necessarily the most effective way to communicate.
Still, I’m wondering how Miller got his ironman reputation. Perhaps he’s just been transferring his injuries? Now I’m just being obtuse. :)
πεντήκοντα δύο
Every time Miller touches a player or opponent, he transfers his injury bugs?
Hah! Nice!
Not just the Blazers, but how many opponents have gone down during games this year? Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Chauncey Billups, Hasheem Thabeet, I must be forgetting a few.
If the NBA figures out Millers diabolical plan, we may win all our games by forfeit. Well, until we don’t have enough players on the court.
You may have been hyperbolic, and now obtuse;
but it was still a cute observation…

Miller has already gotten banged up this year
and bounced back. I thought he was going to miss games a couple times, but he never does.
No one can say...
Staff/Coaches: Lucas, Allen, and Nate. Players: Pendergraph, Mills, Batum, Outlaw, Pryzbilla, Oden, Fernandez, Roy, Aldridge, and now Blake. All have been injured or sick this season for the Blazers. Are you kidding me!!! Wow!!! No words lefte to say. No other team can say this has happened to them, ever. Wow!!!
Get Well Soon, Blakey
What happened to this season???? It went under the surgeon's knife. But its not over yet. Hold tough. This team will be battle hardened. Tough. Honed to a fine edge. They will be playing playoff style – nine man rotation – for a significant portion of the season. Dividends will be paid. - Tiparillo on Dec 15, 2009 11:48 AM PST on Game 26 Preview: Kings vs. Blazers on Blazersedge
speechless
WOW….unbelievable….I was hoping I would not feel that sick feeling in the pit of my stomach again this season…..
But as with all the others….I am feeling that same way right now….almost sick….maybe sympathy pains? I am beyond creeped out…..BUT I will be at the RG tomorrow night….still loud…and still proud….

Now If Andre Miller Misses a Game . . .
it will be a sign of the Apocalypse.
The mathematical probability of all of this happening to us in one season is ridiculously low....
I stopped feeling surprised after Greg went own. Now I just feel a little numb inside when I hear someone else is missing games…
"Rudy is not everyday a shooter," Fernandez said. "He's defense. He's passes. He's assists."
I laughed.
That laugh that Dave talked about when Przybilla went down. Not because it’s funny, but because I’d have to cry otherwise, and it is much manlier to laugh at adversity.

yeah same here
I dont think I could be anymore depressed than when Greg Oden went down. I was wrong, but still that day was the worst.

This is unbelievable
4 of the 5 starters from last season will be out the next game. Seriously?

Are the basketball Gods coming up with more creative ways to have our guys miss games?
what’s next, H1N1? (Just kidding…please, no more)
52 + 88 = 140% better team.
Sadly, I was fully expecting to read that Brandon Roy had shot himself with some fireworks at his party

don't ever laugh when a hearse goes by
Maybe the Blazers should consider quarantining their players in-between games. Just imagine if a flu bug were to “rip through the locker room”
(knocks on wood)
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Nate without his Binky?
Whatever will he do?

Pneumonia is no fun! That being said … WHAT!!! So, Brandon Roy is the only Blazer from last year to play (Martell was out with injury and Bayless/Shavlik hardly ever played) . I’m still proud of my team (albeit a “slightly” different team than what I was expecting this year) and will watch win or lose tomorrow. I dunno, maybe since GSW have had just as much luck this season and we’re a different team that from the last time we met you never know what will happen tomorrow! Just hope Blake and Aldridge are back by the time we play the L*kers! Also … if Rudy comes back when he’s hoping there’ s only 6 more games before he’s back and then Nic right after so when you think of it in terms of number of games instead of weeks it sounds much better.
Basketball?
We barely have a four-square team! Coach Nate better step up the rehab, he might be starting soon.
Miller – Bayless
Roy – Bayless
Webster – Roy – Cunningham
Cunningham – Pendergraph – Randolph
Howard – Pendergraph – Randolph
Perfectly reasonable lineup against the Warriors and Clippers and maybe even Grizzlies for the next week. Against the Lakers: Ouch.
Personally, I'd find it amusing if he experiments with Nellie-style smallball lineups against the Warriors
They ARE the Warriors after all, and I’d love to see what Miller-Bayless-Roy-Webster-Pendergraph/Randolph can do. I wouldn’t include Howard, as he’d slow the lineup down, and smallball USUALLY (but not always) focuses on fastbreak and quick play

Having had pneumonia
I’m surprised Steve was playing. It’s scary and no fun for sure. I spent a week in the hospital on breathing treatments and antibiotics. I don’t think he’ll back for a little while. Get better Blake.
That was my first thought.
I’ve never had pneumonia, but I certainly know people who have had it. They could barely summon the energy to get up to go to the bathroom. I’m amazed — and impressed — that he’s been playing through this stuff.
Get well soon, Steve.
I think it can vary a lot
I had bacterial pneumonia but could go about my life until I got antibiotics. But I imagine his is pretty bad, and I can’t image playing at a professional level.
I'm sorry but
This has crossed the line from tragic to ridiculous.
I can’t even…my mind doesn’t seem to be able to wrap itself around the sheer magnitude of this season.
One way or another…wow, this season will sure be memorable.
"We Believe" - Rudy Fernandez
It is ridiculous
But we are seeing roughly the same number of wins at this time last year with a really depleted group of guys. I don’t want to see anyone injured or sick but perhaps this serves as a good way to get the team to play as a team and not worry about minutes and roles but just play their butts off every single night. It’s also a good reminder despite the hardship that the game they play can be gone in the blink of an eye.
I figured out what happened to Artest;
he was home watching scouting tapes of the Blazers…
Is it safe to watch a game at the Rose Garden?

I’m in pretty decent shape,
but recently injured my back and knee.
I blame (watching) the Blazers.
[OK maybe its just a sympathetic reaction, but how many Blazer FANS out there are suffering injuries too?.]

I stepped wrong getting out of bed last month and now my foot hurts to put weight on...
I bet I broke my 5th metatarsal bone in my right foot… Wouldn’t that just be the pits?
Oh, and I had a 103-degree fever with a side of stomach flu for Christmas… I think the only thing that pulled me through was the guys beating Denver
Blazers win!

The thought of a blackout drunk Ron Artest deciding to hunker down and study game tape just made me laugh a little
Only a little?

Get back soon so you can help us win, and earn a better contract!
In Bayless I trust.

He has been playing better as of late compared to the very beginning…look for JB to get like 30 minutes…I see 15 pts and 4 asts possible for Rex
