Just wondering if we'll ever see Freeland in a Portland Uni?
There are a lot of trickle down effects as a result of all the injuries. Joel will not be opting out of his contract and it may scare teams away from offering a big enough deal to pry him away after his deal expires. If KP likes him backing up G.O., and I think he does, I imagine a new deal would be in the works.
Penderbeast should get a lot of run through the rest of the year and could have a solid grasp on the backup PF position when this season is over. Freeland brings a skill set more similar to L.A. with his perimeter shooting. Jeff P gives us the banger that is nice to pair with Aldridge. Would Joel F leave a $$ offer to play in the ACB to come over and be a 3rd string player here?
It's very possible the Freeland is the best of our EuroLeague assets with the smallest liklihood of having a future impact for the Blazers. I could see him being the final piece in a deal with one of our veteran PGs being moved to get some help along the frontline.
What do you thnk? Will we ever see JF in a Blazer uni?

I recently came across an article (through hoopshype.com) with a mention of Joel Freeland...
This british blogger names Freeland one of the “The 10 Best Basketball Stories of 2009.”
He seems to think that Freeland is ready, talent-wise…
Check it out:

I don’t know enough about him to say whether he is ready, or not. We certainly could use some big bodies, though!
Freeland's skillset is not that similar to Aldridge, it's more similar to David Lee only 6'11" tall.
He still had some defensive deficiencies (e.g. always recognizing when to help off his man in time, breaking up picks – and setting them) the last time I saw him, but he certainly looks close to NBA ready. With increased playing time and responsibility this year and still high efficiency ratings in both the Spanish ACB league and the international Euroleague games, he could be a good candidate to shore up our front court next season.
However, I also don’t think he would not come over to be a 3rd string player without playing time. He would want some kind of guarantee to be used in a similar way as Rudy, and he probably would want to be payed similarly to his ACB deal and not according to the rookie scale for a very late first round pick. Which would be possible, since he is a first round pick who has not signed in 3 seasons with the team that picked him, enabling the Blazers to sign him to a 3 year deal with cap space in excess of the rookie scale (we likely won’t have that unless Joel opts out) or the MLE. The Spurs will likely do that with Tiago Splitter next season, arguably one of the top centers in Europe right now. The Blazers might as well.
I'm torn
I’d rather see KP use the MLE for a veteran big man. If the 2010-2011 Blazers are going to compete deep into the playoffs, they’ll need more experience. Freeland would be on the same developmental “level” as Pendy and Ferno (if not a little bit “behind” them) next fall
Using JF’s rights as a trade “sweetener” might make the most sense
When reached 40 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Similar to LA in terms of being more offensive minded with shooting touch (like David Lee). Whereas Pendy is more of a banger (although he did show some shooting range in summer league).
“skill set” was probably the wrong terminology.
I do like the changeup with the banger off the bench. I think the PT guarantee will be hard for him to get. He could turn out great. It doesn’t matter if he spends his career in Europe. He’s not coming this year. If Pendergraph continues to impress, Freeland could be attractive to teams. If there isn’t a clear plan on how and when to get him here, we should look to move him for the right deal. IMO.

I could see him
as being a piece for a deal, although I would like to see him come over and play for the Blazers.
I'm not saying, I'm just saying.
Watching him play...
he’s still a work in progress. He’s not intuitive, but he has decent touch. But his defense is pretty questionable. Gets off his feet too much and can be pushed around. He’s a better shotblocker than David Lee, but worse at most other things (including, annoyingly, rebounding). Sort of a poor man’s Birdman.
Correct me if I'm wrong...
but wasn’t KP willing to renounce his rights and the rights to Koponen if necessary this summer to sign a FA? If so, wouldn’t that kinda indicate management isn’t expecting much from him?
