Sounds logical, but I would have preferred Joe Smith

Ahh Juwan
I thought he’d retired, apparently not?
If he’s willing to sign for the minimum I’m okay with it.

Bring him on for the minimum baby! The more bigs the better!
I like Juwan. He’s been a servicable big for a long time. He would probably enjoy the lack of playing time he would see in portland also.

So what does that say about
Pendergraph?

He's a rook!
On a team that wants to go deep in the playoffs.
Juwan wouldn’t be around long, if at all.

Well if we sign him, it seems to show a clear cut philosophy
We want 4’s that can shoot and spread the floor. Rebounding is the work of our Vacuum Cleaner center combo and while important, is not as important as being able to spread the floor.

I'm for it
No risk signing him for the vet’s minimum for one year. Worst case scenario, we can throw him in a trade in February if it doesn’t work out.

Hmm... interesting
I just saw him play on ESPN Classics, A 2004 Lakers-Magic game (it’s the off-season, don’t judge me!)
Are we there yet?

Ha! I feel ya, I think I watched the same one.
Oh the desperation we fall to in the offseason.

Sounds like a good idea to me...
I could honestly care less what we pay him, just make sure it is a one year deal…

There was a rumor about him and Udoka a week ago. Guess it might become true, at least for a training camp invite.
By the way, for some reason although he is a nice guy he is one of the “All-Time Greatest NBA Cancers” according to FreeDarko, i.e. making their new team’s record worse and by their departure making their old team better. He is #4 on the list, with a “cancer effect” of 97 games. Worse than Marbury.

is that somehow factoring in the impact of his contract?
I remember he had a crazy contract for a while, that might have hamstrung his teams from adding more good players. I’ve never heard anything about his actual presence in the locker room or on the court being negative.

wow--i think its definitely possible
But Juwan never seemed like a cancer type to me.

Well, if we get him
I hope the Blazers are the cure for cancer.

He's the right "kind" of player KP should be adding to the roster
I’m just not sure he’s the best option that will be available
adding Howard and keeping Outlaw only intensifies the logjam at the forward position

Stromile Swift and Zendon Hamilton are also going to be invited to training camp. Pendergraph is going to be signed regardless from the looks of it.

Howard, Swift, and Hamilton all auditioning for backup PF
plus Pendergraph close to signing. Plus Cunningham already signed.
This may mean Travis is going to be traded for a draft pick (revive those rumors?) rather than a backup PF.

I doubt it
It means KP is looking for a guy we can bring in when Travis is being manhandled. Travis would still be the main backup PF.
If we are looking to replace Travis entirely as backup PF, I think we are looking for someone better than Howard, Swift, and Hamilton.

I would hope we get something better because of injuries.
Howard, Swift, or Hamilton might cut it for 10 minutes behind LMA, but I wouldn’t want them starting for him if he was injured.
KP has me confused this off-season, particularly around PF. He doesn’t draft Blair when he could have got him for low risk at 31 or 33 in the 2nd round. Then he tries to sign Millsap (after striking out with a 3/4 in Turk), then he talks to Lee, then he was reported to have least talked to Odom. So after passing on Blair, he apparently puts four FA’s that can play backup PF ahead of the point guard we needed all along.
That tells me he doesn’t see Travis as our backup PF. But I don’t know if he thinks Howard and Swift are 2nd string or 3rd string PFs.

well, we can hope they see Howard and Swift as 3rd string PFs
because that’s how I see them, as being equivalent to Shav, Diogu and Ruffin
Ideally, they should be looking to improve upon Frye, and that’s what adding Millsap or Lee would’ve done. I’m still hoping for a deal that includes Outlaw and the Euro-hold money for a quality PF/C like Turaf or Foster. The “toughness” issue hasn’t been addressed, and neither has “emergency” center (I’m not satisfied in the “LMA could play some 5 in a small lineup” fallback option)

This is how I read it
KP is keeping his options open regarding a trade for a backup PF. He would still like to get a strong rebounding backup, a quality player.
But he’s also taking out insurance in case a deal doesn’t come off, or perhaps we should say strengthening his hand, so he can say, “Well, we don’t need this, we’ve got lots of options at backup PF, so if you think you can hold us to ransom, you’re wrong.”
So he is ready to play this season, if need be, with Travis as the backup, but with these guys in reserve as well. He would like to strengthen that position, and will look to do so, but he doesn’t want to be in a position where he has to make a deal on the other guy’s terms.
In other words, I don’t think that signing one of these guys means he has stopped using his telephone. He’s just trying to strengthen his fallback position.
