The sun will come out tomorrow -- -Junk Edition
Is it the weather? Is that why I have no morning Junk to get my day started? Hmmm. You peoples should know how I feel about that by now. One day of rain and it's like all that long hot summer weather has been vanquished from our memories.Despite getting soaked to the bone yesterday in an afternoon deluge, I really enjoy stormy weather.
So I was perusing the recent lack of love for the world's goodest Trail Blazer and felt a tinge of stress overcoming the fanclub. For the sake of the Loyal Order and its beloved Poobah, I am using the JD to promote one honest expression-- "We love you, man." Sheesh like I haven't worn that out yet.
So anywho, to keep it sanctimonious with the purity of Junk, and I apologize if its been done before, what is THEE worst movie of all time? For bow, it had to be Three Amigos. Talk about not meeting expectations.
Chime in Bedgereenos, and keep in mind (using the voice of that little orphan whose name I cant recall but I'm a big fan of) "The sun will come out tomorrow!" (or at least by the weekend. DAY

After Elaines critical review
I couldn’t bring myself to watching that movie even though I had bought it on video… bad investment
There are some people who aren’t smart
It took tooooooo loooooonng to tell the story. But everyone loved it. I don't know why
Three Amigos has some gems if watch it when it pops up on the dial. Paying for it might have skewed your experience. I have to suspend my expectation when watching it though. I can’t go into it thinking, “Alright! Three of the funniest actors to come out of the 70s and 80s in one single movie!” I have to watch it as if they aren’t in it.
And, “I love you, man”
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Regarding Elaine, I'm amazed Julia Louis-Dreyfus is now hotter with age. She's like a fine wine.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
that's one thing that always bothered me about Seinfeld
all these male characters thought Elaine was attractive and I just don’t find her attractive at all. It’s even worse than Jerry being able to date models.
The ones I've walked out, or nearly did, make a fortunately short list.
What was that sci-fi one with the John-Boy actor? They slapped a mole the size of a quarter on his cheek for that flick. I walked out of that one.
I also walked out of Pink Flamingoes.
I’m trying to think whether I’ve walked out of any and demanded my money back.

Yeah, you are right. I saw this on IMDB
I wonder what it means:
Archive Footage:

2. Rocky V (1990) (uncredited) …. Ivan Drago

they do flashbacks to previous Rocky's in those movies
so i guess they credit the people in the earlier flicks.

Three Amigos
is pretty darn funny if you’re not expecting a comedic masterpiece.
Worst movie I’ve seen is is tough to come up with because I usually forget about them or don’t bother to watch in the first place. But for me, Armageddon and Titanic are high up the list.
Armageddon is good
I love slow motion walking to dramatic music for 90 minutes.
Just like Horatio of CSI Miami.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Armageddon has Steve Buscemi, which rules it out for worst movie of all time
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

Titanic?
Decrapio’s descent into the icy waters was well worth it
There are some people who aren’t smart
using the Titanic
as a setting for a simple love story for the express purpose of emotional manipulation is crap. plus the acting wasn’t that great and neither was the writing. the special effects were all right. But the only good thing in that movie was the guy bouncing off the propeller which, when you think about it, is in fairly bad taste.

Worst ever? Pretty much anything with Steven Seagal in it.
Of course, Steven Seagal movies don’t necessarily try to be good. In the category of “Tried to be good and really sucked” I would have to nominate The Station Agent or the similarly dreary The Straight Story.

I heard some real horror stories from an ex co-worker
who left Viet Nam on a small boat that was so crowded they had to dangle their legs over the side to make room for more people. When someone died they just had to throw them over the side. I forget where he ended up (I want to say Israel but that doesn’t seem right) but he and his younger sister were intentionally separated from their parents and they spent over a year in a refugee camp alone. They had to fight for every scrap of food. He was eleven when he went into the refugee camp and wasn’t reunited with his parents until he was 14, I think. He was pretty nonchalant about it and said those kinds of things and much worse happened to lots of kids.

I don't really drink :-(
My parents got so drunk at my sister’s wedding, I literally had to carry my mom to the bathroom to puke all over herself.
She's never gotten sick from drinking
She was just drinking wine like normal, and my dad was drinking tumblers of whiskey, and he gave his glass to my mom to hold for a second and for a “joke” she gulped half a big glass of whiskey down.
She couldn’t walk 5 minutes after that.
My dad was so drunk that he was rambling about nothing at the end of the night to the DJ and photographer, and I made sure he wasn’t writing 10K checks or something dumb. He was GONE.
My mom has a beer or wine at the end of the night sometimes… this was her ‘college experience’ that she never had.
Neither puked until after everyone had left, so they kept their dignity.
I doubt that's right to remark
Mortimer is a great guy. Slamming on his mom seems really out of bounds…

He told me a story about back in the early nineties, nirvana was playing there before they got big. There was this crazy chick making a scene in the ladies room, she was getting sick, screaming at people, cursing, just totally hammered. So he had to go in there with some other people to take care of it. He walks in and sees Courtney Love sitting on the floor with her makeup and hair all screwed up and her skirt up around her waste, wearing no underwear and she kept screaming “You see that guy? yeah :(
i’m from family of 6 refugee siblings and reliving the story through my parents is just…unreal….but you know, ALOT of families/people go through that…sometimes the part about us living in a refugee camp for a year was more terrifying then being on the boat….
i’m not nonchalant about it but every family from that era had an amazing story (each very unique)…most of them very sad but it’s something we don’t openly share because it has been so generalized (pointing blame to myself too)…if you ever bump into an elder statesman who would discuss their story, it’s worth buying them coffee/lunch just to listen/share and feel the emotions from it….
i had a chance to do this with my friend’s uncle who was in the Japanese internment (camps) in Cali…i cried listening to him because i didn’t know that much about that dark era in our history…i’m not sure what the definition of an american is to everyone, but i see those who struggle before us as the true american pioneers…their sacrifices were unimaginable…
i’ve started telling my 4 year old the stories but she always ask if there were pirates…there were definitely pirates, but not the Pirates of the Caribbean that she’s thinking of….off my free flow response to ann:)

That’s not the illustrators fault. He didn’t green light an action movie about effeminate aryan acrobats fighting ninjas with sub machine guns. I was referring to the composition being perfect. Look at it with your eyes blurred. See the recycling symbol like shape? It’s nice.

I think the generally accepted narrative is that Oden is a bust
Oden’s going to have to be very good to change that narrative.
Are we sure about this? Hollinger and Dime Magazine just released stuff about Oden being promising. The second he starts producing, the insane amount of media coverage will be a good thing.
He’s so publicized that people will HAVE to take notice. Plus, America loves its redemption stories.

by Cablinasian on Sep 30, 2009 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions
The problem is that even if he's really good, our slow pace and his status as a non-go-to-guy
will make it hart to produce eyecatching box-score stats. The Hollingers of the world will write that he is good, but I’m not sure the coaches will select him over the likes of Bynum (who, for whatever reason, doesn’t have the same stigma as Oden— probably because he’s had longer stretches of impressive play).
so all he needs is an extended stretch of good play

1. SO hard for eastern splortswriters to stay up past their 10pm bedtimes, and /or

Does the slow pace really inhibit his statistics that drastically in the eyes of the public? He put up some pretty great numbers pre-knee chip injury.
PLUS, if we’re winning, the media hype will be that he is a dominant defender, regardless of if he is or not. People said he was a dominant defender last year and he definitely was not.

if he gets the minutes to get 12 boards, he’ll have more than 12 points. As an unathletic, out of shape, post-surgery, nearly post-move-less, depressed rookie he averaged 12.5 per 30 minutes.

that's true about the defense-- that reputation still existed for a lot of people
It will be interesting to see what the national narrative is about him should he put up a season where he averages 15/11 with good defense in 30+ minutes and 70+ games.
I expect: “Ooooh, Greg Oden… he may only be a decent offensive player, but he DOMINATES the game on the defensive end, as evidenced by the fact that the Blazers are in the top three in points allowed.”
(Who needs to adjust for pace?)

maybe
I wouldn’t be shocked by that.
I also wouldn’t be shocked to hear, “its great to see Greg Oden healthy and contributing, but look at Kevin Durant.”
At some point, the media will start to come down on Durant. Look at McGrady. If the “Thunder” lose 50 games and the Blazers win 57-60, the questions will begin.
We already know that Pelton/Hollinger/intelligent analysts will question Durant if he can’t get that -8.4 defensive on/off taken care of.

Greg doesn't need any stats...
he just needs to punch Bynum, Gasol, and K*be in the face…5 times each but he has to do it with that cheesy smile/grin afterwards while saying “your face is ugly” in chinese…
that will guarantee him a starting spot in the All Star game and be fan favorite

I recently watched it again. I had forgotten who all was in it. I e.g. thought Tinsley was at the side, but towards the end he jumps over the scorer's table and goes into the stands. And I had forgotten the role Big Ben played.

Didja see the punch Jermaine O'Neal threw?
Thank goodness for the other guy that the foot Jermaine planted to throw the punch slipped. It woulda’ been caved in.
IMO, the if Oden were to have an All Star Caliber season
the NBA would eat that storyline of a supposed “fallen prospect rising from the ashes to become an All-Star” up.
"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a woman healthy, wealthy, and wise. That's why you all are wiser than me. It's cloudydays."

We need to get this going. Can one of our creative writers come up with a good backstory?
I get the paper, so I don't care!
that's like a 5 minute segment on TNT right there
the NBA lives for these storylines (Kobe and Shaq BFFs last year, Nate and Dwight, etc.)
"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a woman healthy, wealthy, and wise. That's why you all are wiser than me. It's cloudydays."
We all know there are a ton of shots of Greg introspectively looking off into the distance
I get the paper, so I don't care!
His problem will be Bynum. If he can get that out of the way, he indeed could be an All-Star in the west.
"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard
Bynum… I dunno how much he gets the ball this year, as compared to last year. Artest is a much higher usage player than Ariza.
Plus, he doesn’t have the hype that Greg has. I still run into people who don’t even know who Andrew Bynum is… but they all know Greg Oden.

How many Blazers games will the average voter have seen in January? 1? 2? How many Lakers games? 5? Bynum has much more opportunity to appeal to the average fan by association with the Lakers brand.

Somebody explain this to me
where is the money in browsers?
Is it all just a scheme to drive traffic to the search engine of choice (Bing for IE, Google for Chrome, etc.)? Is there really that much money to be made from that? Or is there some other revenue stream that I am missing?
Driving traffic is a big one
Imagine how little traffic Microsoft would have across MSN, Bing, etc if they did not have their browser as default on around 90% of the purchased computers in the US. So they can’t afford to fall behind Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc because then they lose that traffic bump.
As far as I know, Firefox isn’t ever going to be major corporate force, but I believe they do nicely from their homepage. I’m not aware of anything Chrome and Safari bring to the table in terms of monetizing their software. I presume they want the same as Microsoft — to have folks directed to their services.
To a lesser extent, I think Safari was created because a.) Apple wasn’t happy with the browser options on OSX, which could reduce sales, and b.) Apple likes to keep things inside the Apple Ecosystem whenever possible, for user experience purposes.
All speculation.
The browser - while maybe not the operating system of the future as discussed in the article - is at least a major major component of it
Remember that the EU tried to force Microsoft to unbundle IE and Media Player from Windows, and partly succeeded? Those were the days. Now it really is an integral part of the operating system, and controlling that is highly important to Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook (yes, there will be a Facebook browser) and to a lesser extent Firefox and Opera and the rest.
As for driving traffic to their sites, yes that is also a very important part of the equation. Every percentage point in the search business – with the associated ads – is worth roughly 1 billion dollars.
"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard
Too keep you as long on their property as possible and collect data
I’m not sure if it will be a full-fledged browser – there are rumors about that – or at first just a toolbar a la Digg and also Google, but they are definitely working in this direction. They have the money, the developers, and the singularly focused founder to get it done.
"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard
I'd hope it's spent on better browser integration with IE/Firefox
I mean sure, they have plenty of money and vision to build a good browser. But their name recognition likely won’t translate to any browser market share unless it does something very unique.
It is becoming one of the default login/verification engines already
Along with Twitter, but Twitter really knows nothing about you as a person. Also heard this week Google has $19 billion flying around in cash and short-term assets looking for investments. Maybe they just buy some other prime web companies again. Though Yahoo kinda did that and then lost most of the founders and now doesn’t really know what to do with all of them.
"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard
It is becoming one of the default login/verification engines already
Only primarily for sites that want to expand into social networking (my favorite example is tv.com).
Now if they have aspirations of trying to be the OpenID of the internet, interesting. But I mean, Facebook still wants you to login to a non-secure web page by default. They’ll have a ways to go for a lot of companies to trust their security.
IE8 is horrible
But I think that you’ll be pleasantly surprised with Windows 7…provided you don’t go to a launch party.
(whoever thought up that brilliant idea needs to be keelhauled)
People use IE?
I thought IE’s only purpose was to visit firefox.com and download a browser.

At some point they were so prevalent that I feared future generations would think we used them as some form of payment, or as gifts for the afterlife put in the grave together with the dead like in old Egypt.

I am trying to resist the Oden hype machine
But is is getting tough!!!
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Here is Brandon talking about Oden
I don’t like to always break down every little word, but he did qualify a statement about Oden:
This is from Hollinger’s ESPN post today
“In the past I’ve always said, physically, he’s so dominant,” Brandon Roy said. “This summer I watched him, and he’s stepping up the skill. He’s not just beating on guys anymore, he’s doing little shimmies, jumpers with the left hand, jumpers with the right hand. The most impressive thing is that he’s facing guys up now and shooting that little touch shot. If he can continue to add that touch to his game, he’s going to be pretty dominant.”
I get the paper, so I don't care!
so what
he’s not gonna make the mistake “oden will dominate, book it”
this is what’s called “tempering expectations” .
S
The Princess of Blazersedge
Sport is my boyfriend
He did in his first quote, and then modified it later.
I know. I am just trying to stay tempered regarding Oden, so I am looking for things to help me.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Shouldn't he qualfy that statement a bit?
Does he mean better than he’s ever seen Greg at all, or the best he’s seen him since he became a Blazer. Those are two different things.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
And Ben just answered my question via twitter as well.
It’s based off of first hand accounts of what he’s seen only apparently. It’s still great to hear that he’s getting that much better.
Yes! Yes! In the face!

Fun article. Though by the end, I’m beginning to wonder if he likes anything.
Weird frustration for me. When people talk about Microsoft, it’s typically self contained (Sometimes Linux comes up). But whenever Apple comes up, it’s always compared to Microsoft (Typically “It’s still better than MS”, or “MS stole it from Apple,” even when it’s provably false).
Let some more Apple vs Microsoft crankiness commence.

But I understand others like PC’s better than Macs. Totally fine with me. People can have their own opinion without needing to argue it because when you boil it down it comes out to how comfortable you feel with the system.

I hate Apple Fanboys. I would never like to be the member of a society that would accept me ;)
Tech journalists are increasingly faced with prejudice, too, as to improve their measly newspaper payments they hold speeches, consult or write books about the products and companies they cover. This has led to a number of conflicts of interest, e.g. most recently for the Apple columnist of the NYT who was accused of being too soft when interviewing Steve Jobs and writing about the latest products. On the other hand, the columnist for the WSJ is hosting an annual panel where he talks to company heads a la Gates and CIOs.
"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard
And their problem is also: If they ask the really tough questions, those high-profile and high-ego company heads will just walk out the door and talk to other journalists who ask nicer (and sometimes pre-approved) questions, or accept to only talk about their latest cool new products.

Cocooning and us vs. them are indeed major social trends
In political news and opinioning it gives rise to figures like Glenn Beck (who manages to re-create old angst across the political spectrum). The media landscape is so diverse and fractioned that if I wanted to I can pretty much only read and listen to people who agree with me and warn of people who don’t agree with me. In sports it gives rise to team blogs, talk radio, columnists, etc. :)

I thought it was good to watch knowing it would be bad
I like to think of bad movies as ones that I thought would be good then hated it.
Battlefield Earth was terrible
that brings to mind The 13th Warrior … another nauseator
There are some people who aren’t smart
13th Warrior wasn't that bad... definitely better than Beowulf
Beowulf: “It’s time to fight? Time to get naked!”
Blazers win!
I was so drunk when I watched Beowulf the first time
I didn’t realize it was all CGI…. felt pretty dum the second time thru it… But I liked it… Grendel was pretty cool
There are some people who aren’t smart
I really like the first half of 13th Warrior, but it goes downhill fast once the "monster" is revealed
That is a common problem with monster/horror movies. Once the evil is revealed, it should still be scary and not make you laugh. Same with Brotherhood of the Wolf.

I know, but that was a different time.
That was before the “every kid in little league gets a trophy” culture began to invade. Now even minor accomplishments seem to warrant unnecessary exposure. I’m not saying I expect them to do it. I just wouldn’t put it past them.

They always put up banners for that crap. Are the supposed to just not put one up because they have to share it? It is still a good accomplishment.

But I COULDN’T STAND Sharon Stone. I just couldn’t take it anymore. I had to leave. She just irritated me to no end. It's best served cold, like revenge
Stone’s character is deplorable, so the fact that you hated her, makes her a great success; I believe she took home some hardware for it too. It’s a good movie, but you need to be in the mood—Barry white, silk, etc.

what is the best tactic for leaving class early?
got a gig worth about 75 bucks but it starts a half an hour before class ends, it’s a business outreach class, should i tell the truth, or just up and leave after getting contact info. from one of my peers? it is the first week, where people are dropping the class/adding it, so probably won’t be remembered, what should i do?
14736251
How big is the class?
If it is a huge class, then just walk out
If it is a smaller class, then talk to the prof about it.
Some do
It depends on the size of the class and how much contact you will have with the prof that determines if it is worth taking that risk. I think you should just tell the prof what is going on and then work through it with him.
if you dont looke like D Cunningham in the above picture it might not work so well
If you do, lay it on the juicy double

A different kind of question: What's the best/worse movie you've seen while on an airplane?
When I was young, I saw airplane (9/11 hadn’t happened yet), which I thought was hilarious, but made some people on the plane very uneasy. For the worst movie, A Knight’s Tale. I’ve tried to watch it again since then, and I just can’t do it.

Oh I forgot when they show the plane statistics on trans pacific flights
Where they show the plane (always over blue, no land around), how fast and what direction we’re flying in
Has the season started yet?
by SabasforThree on Sep 30, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions
On Cathay Pacific they have a camera that faces down from near the front wheel. Pretty nice for takeoff and landing, but a weird feeling when you come on that channel in flight and see nothing.
"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard
Ever land at SFO over the water?
Avoid looking out the window. The plane goes down, down, down, then levels off for the landing… and you look out the window and see nothing but water. Then the plane drops some more, and now you’re looking up at sailboats as you zoom by at 200 mph. Just when you figure you’re doomed, the wheels touch down on the tarmac.
Yeah, that is crazy. In Reno
The plane seems to drop out of the sky straight down into the airport.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Orange County airport does that for takeoff and landing
It’s to minimize noise to the neighbors there, not sure about Reno.
It’s straight to take off, then suddenly shoot what feels like straight up.
repost
I was flying from New Delhi into Ladakh, a former principality in northern india(now part of Jammu&Kashmir) a few years ago.
That was an unbelievable flight. Being able to look out the window and see the Himalayas jutting up through the clouds, barely below the plane was an experience I will never forget. As you get closer to landing, the plane descends as you start noticing shimmering, jewel-like lakes and patches of green in an otherwise deserted mountainous environment. The mountain tops are more at eye level now and as the plane makes a gradual bank you see in the distance a lone airstrip, that in the modern world would appear abandoned. The plane circles around the valley, dwarfed by the rising Zanskar mountains, losing altitude so it can begin its final approach. Now understand it takes a LONG time to get there, and you have already spent nearly 21 hours on planes at this point, so you have begun to feel comfortable and recognize all of the normal sounds that an aircraft makes. But nothing I have ever experienced on an airplane had prepared me for the sound of the engines seemingly going in reverse, in-flight to act as airbrakes, for our landing on this former military base at 12,000 feet. Your life is placed in the hands of the universe, as all travel in the Himalayan plateau is, and there has never been a more welcome and perfect landing.

Twilight was the worst movie I ever saw on an airplane.

Twilight sucks
In Her Shoes might be the worst airplane movie for me. I frickin’ cried because of it too, I was coming home from my grandma’s funeral. I laughed at the same time too because it was dumb to be crying over that dumb movie.
Never seen a movie on an airplane
I hardly ever fly. Although I think Airport ’77 would be fabulous.
I forgot a few on the airplane:
One that I just couldn’t put the headphones on for:
“Under the Tuscan Sun” with Diane Lane. I mean, Diane Lane is in it, and I don’t bother looking up. That’s bad.
Best movie seen on a train: Star Trek: First Contact.
Last year I fell asleep while watching "Vantage Point". Then I woke up when it was shown the second time on a loop, and thought "wow, that film has some lengths" ;)
"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard
I liked it, just the different vantage points mean the story gets repeated from the perspective of 8 different people. And falling asleep it became a few more making it really repetitive.

I liked that movie
but it was kinda repetitive

kinda going on a different movie topic
what movies have you seen that you weren’t expecting anything out of, but turned out to be pretty good?
Be Kind Rewind is one off the top of my head
"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a woman healthy, wealthy, and wise. That's why you all are wiser than me. It's cloudydays."
A small list:
Oceans 11
Rumble in the Bronx (only saw cheesy kung fu movies before hand)
Fight Club (I saw it long after people quoted it to death)
Wall E
BASEketball
Be Kind Rewind too

and the seventh born will be a wizard. A god amongst men.
My team went to the playoffs in my first year.
When it came out its seemed like another lame racist movie
My friend told me at the time that a racist goes to jail, gets raped by black guys, and decides that racism is bad after that. I do not regret not watching it after that description.
I believe he was raped by whites after recanting his racist stance
It is a lot more than that

If I recall correctly, that film came out during the overexposure of Elizabeth Banks.
Of all the movies Banks was in during 2008, Zack and Miri Make a Porno was my favorite.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
Role Models was my favorite movie of '08 that she was in
(yet another one that i was pleasantly surprised by)
"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a woman healthy, wealthy, and wise. That's why you all are wiser than me. It's cloudydays."
I'm a Kevin Smith, Jeff Anderson, and Seth Rogen fanboy, so my choice was a little biased.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
I liked Chasing Amy and parts of Dogma most
Hated Mallrats, Jersey Girl was sooooo lame, Clerks 2 is one of the worst movies ever and made me cringe with how bad it is, Clerks was more good because of how it was made than the actual movie (to me, though most revere it), didn’t see Zack and Miri.
His speaking engagements on Youtube are pretty funny, though when he brags about his Superman script and how it got ruined by Jon Peters’ suggestions… uhhh… everyone go read that script. It is GOD. AWFUL.
It is literally embarrassing. A wise cracking robot that winks at the end, stupid jokes, oh my God I hated it and I couldn’t believe he’d be bragging about it for years in interviews and his speeches at colleges and crap.
I agree that ...
Mallrats and Jersey Girl weren’t Kevin Smith’s best movies, nor was Chasing Amy for that matter.
However, I do love Clerks, Dogma, and the aforementioned Zack and Miri Make a Porno — as well as the animated TV series “Clerks” — additionally, Clerks II and even Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back were entertaining fares to me.
Lastly, I enjoy Smith’s candor and openness in his sit-down interviews.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.
I like his interviews more than anything he has done
I can’t get over how much I cringed watching Clerks 2, with it trying to be meangingful and all.
I ain’t seen Chasing Amy since it came out on video, I bet. It might not hold up. I was a kid then.
I really, really, really didn’t like the Clerks TV show. I dunno what it is… in interviews he’s funny. I like “him”, it seems like. But man, I just don’t like his movies.
Dogma didn’t need that poop monster. I liked most of it though.
and alanis morissette as god? Yeah that's good casting.
Memo to K. Smith: you can’t be puttin’ it on a pedestal. It’s cool you like her, but just don’t be so obvious.

- Mystery Men, with Ben Stiller (whom I normally dislike)

- Bring it On. A cheerleader movie with Kirsten Dunst? Never saw it coming.
- The Rock, back before they wore down that formula.
- Mallrats, which was surprising since I didn’t enjoy Clerks.
- Sneakers, now one of my favorite pseudo-tech movies.
Also, nothing personal, but I’d also like to cancel out your positive review of Be Kind Rewind. There’s 15 or 20 minutes of great movie hidden inside of a bunch of junk. That was a big disappointment.

do you know if the germans have really a big advanced version of scrabble?
can’t you just make up words by adding them together?
14736251
In theory you can pretty much add any subjects together and it will be a word in German. But for Scrabble, the rule is you can only use words that are in a dictionary similar to Webster, and also no names or places.
So Computer-Cornflakes or computercornflakes makes still no sense. Like in France, there is also a society to preserve the language, although less radical against influences from other languages. English words or fragments as well as “false friends” are pretty prevalent, especially in advertising and anything that gets heavily influenced by the US like pop culture and technology.

i liked this part
Travis Outlaw, who has passed the test on the first try only once in five seasons (two years ago), came in Tuesday night with two seconds to spare.
The players pair up and run the sprints together, and Outlaw ran with close friend Brandon Roy.
"Brandon wanted to make sure Trav passed this year,’’ Webster said. "So he ran by him and pushed him.’’
Roy finished with a plus 3, the second lowest time of the qualifiers. He didn’t run the test in the past two seasons because of injuries to his heel and ankle.
"My rookie year I did it in plus 5. This time I cruised it,’’ Roy said, smiling. "It’s a long season you know.’’

Blake is fit
Oden is moving well.
Dante and LMA have quicks.
Ime and Howard are in good shape for old geezers.
Surprised Bayless didn’t do better.
He has a lot of muscle to carry for a player his size. He would probably be among the fastest if you just do one set, but gets tired if you do multiple.
"I think he can still play" - Kevin Pritchard on Juwan Howard
Oden gives a lot of reason to be impressed with that number
It backs up a lot of the recent stories about his mobility and weight loss, the first time we’ve actually seen a test of his new mobility. A very nice surprise.
Oden ran the 3/4 court sprint in pre-draft camp in 3.27. That’s as fast as Roy, Sessions, Curry, Ridnour, Griffin, Green (+/- 0.01). If he is close to that again, that is a force coming down the lane as a trailer on the break.

I know I shouldn't share this but it reminded me that artists are all kind of crazy
I was Googling “menstral fluid” and I found this blog of an artist.
BS: Why did you choose to work in the medium(s) that you use?
MS: I love experimenting with different materials. I tend to always include some type of printmaking due to its repetitive nature and the delayed gratification involved.
I’ve worked with menstrual fluid. Ran tampons through my etching press. I chose these materials for conceptual reasons. This is used in the sexual abuse works. My interest here deals with sexuality and femininity. It is a way of addressing a personal shame that is the result of my childhood sexual molestation.
If you click the link, there is a photo of her paining called Red Rover, Red Rover 2004, menstrual fluid monotypes, silkscreen

A factually correct description of the hairstyle in the picture as a garment worn on the head that has a racial connotation since about 9/11
In quotations. And I said go ahead, flag me. And either someone did, or a mod came along and wanted no confusion. But I suppose Ben thought exactly this when taking the picture. Or some commenters would have.

Matt Groening never lived there. He is from Portland, same area as me.
I have heard that before from people from Eugene/Springfield and I don’t see why. I think they are going by the name, which is just a super common city name.
I believe The Simpsons are more Portland related
Many of the streets are characters in the show— Flanders, Burns, I cant think of the rest.. my brain is fading

It was streets near where he grew up.
Some people based off of teachers he had, and some not related at all but people make them fit obscure Oregon stuff..

Kearney, and Homer’s brother had the last name Powell. He was a car maker and had a company named Powell Motors, of which there was a local dealer that shared the same name.

NBA League Pass has some new options
For those of you who have cable or satellite operators with a lot of bandwidth…
* Get up to 40 out-of-market games a week during the regular season
* Watch all the games airing in NBA LEAGUE PASS at once on the mosaic channel
* Dual feeds of select games let you choose your home town announcers
* Catch up on games you may have missed each day with replay games
* Follow the action live online, with free access to NBA LEAGUE PASS Broadband
* Includes NBA LEAGUE PASS Stat Central, a live source for scores, stats, game previews and recaps
* Select HD games included*
I've never watched a mosaic channel.
The idea intrigues me, but I think I would need bigger than my 40-inch TV.

Now finally a new NBA rule I can get behind. That is annoying on TV, and would be really annoying if I paid a lot for my seats.
Other big rule change that teams were informed of today pertains to the league’s attempts to cut down on players standing while on the bench. NBA says it’s responding to “numerous complaints that the NBA and its teams received from fans during last season” about players standing – Marc Stein

Nobody will say something against players jumping up when something exciting happens, but a number of teams (Cavs for example) were really standing all the time. And 6'5'' - 7+ dudes kinda block the view.

I, however, don’t blame “Dirk Diggler” for giving the new head honcho the third degree, because it was apparently a sudden change of leadership without any community oversight. SBNation runs the show, though, so they’ll have to deal with the shift.

Jamie Moyer's season is over
He should be healed in time for Spring Training. But the Phillies were expected to leave him off their playoff roster, so does he have another year in him?
Maybe Jamie comes back to Seattle and joins the coaching ranks.
At this moment, Jamie Moyer is under contract with the Philadelphia Phillies for one more season.
For nostalgic reasons, I wouldn’t be against trading a non-prospect on the 40-man roster to Philadeliphia for Moyer — such as oft-injured relief pitcher Cesar Jimenez, who joined the Seattle Mariners organization at the tail end of the Pat Gillick era — although the 46-year-old crafty veteran’s salary for next season is a base of $8 million (i.e., $6.5 million plus another $1.5 million based on incentives met this season) and can increase another $1.25 million on top of that through performance-based incentives he can reach in 2010. At any rate, though, it’s pretty much a given that Moyer has already seen his last days as a Mariner.
In any event, I’d love it if the Mariners could somehow pry Adrian Gonzalez and Heath Bell away from the cost-conscious San Diego Padres. I don’t care if it takes a cornucopia of prospects — such as Brandon Morrow, Mike Carp, Juan Ramirez, Philippe Amount, and Greg Halman — to help solidify the offense and bullpen for 2010 and 2011. For the next two years, the M’s must bring in some talent to surround around “King” Felix Hernandez.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.

technically just the outside shots were filmed at timberline
all of the inside were done on an English soundstage. Kubrick was terrified to leave England and had incredible sets built to simulate all kinds of places. The most ridiculous was turning parts of the British countryside into Vietnam for the second half of Full Metal Jacket.

There was a movie with that one famous deaf actress filmed in Oregon
They filmed a little at the Burnside Skatepark. I don’t remember the name of the movie.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I think a lot of skater movies use Burnside skatepark
Love.

It is not a skater movie
It was mainstream, and it was filmed around the same time as Free Willy
I get the paper, so I don't care!
Ah, I see. I have actually filmed a lot skater footage there
Dang, I can’t find that movie.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
In case anyone really cares
And I know you do. It was, “Hear No Evil”
I get the paper, so I don't care!

Taco Bell is gross
meat is not supposed to be squirted out of a caulking gun
There are some people who aren’t smart
yea it tastes good
all “food” products laden with saturated fats and oils taste good. I didn’t say it didn’t taste good I said it was gross. And I didn’t even mention what the slobs who work there do to the food without your knowing
There are some people who aren’t smart
People at the Pizza Hut next to my house like to spit in the pizzas if you don't tip them. It's disgusting.
Love.
I don't get that
don’t they hand you pizza before you hand them the cash? What do they do, take the cash payment, see there is no tip, open the box up and spit in it, then hand it to you and say thanks for your business?
There are some people who aren’t smart
No they do this at the actual location. If you look like a person who wouldn't tip, they'd spit in the food.
Love.
so even if you did tip well
they’d spit based on their initial impression? How repulsive.

I used to like Taco Bell too
But I’ve had it twice in the past few years and dear lord did I feel crappy afterwards. That meat tastes good at first but then the little bits of meat-like-stuff gets in your teeth and it sits in your belly and you feel awful.
their meat is gross now
i will grab a bean burrito if I am desperate, but otherwise I’ve taken my business elsewhere.

The grilled chicken sammich they got is good
The non-breaded kind.
But yeah, they are way different then when I was a kid. Burger King and their Whoppers were the BOMB DIGGETY. Tasted like an actual burger.
Last time I had it, it was all mushy and sub-McDonalds. Gross.
But, the non-breaded chicken BK Broiler or whatever it is called is good.

That's the sour cream they use the caulking gun for
They use a weird elongated spoon/fork thingie to pick up beef etc.
Every Taco Bell I've seen squirts the meat out of gun
Taco Time uses a scoop …
There are some people who aren’t smart
Weird, I haven't seen that at Taco Bell in multiple states.
I wonder how they’d keep it warm. On the west coast, I see scooped out of one of the metal heated bins.
funny memory
back in HS we would all party out before greasing our guts at BK and one little prank we’d pull was to flick the burger pickles onto the windows. They’d stick real tight. Dang we was honery little pricks.

Gordita’s, Gordito’s something like that. I learned a very important life lesson that day. As a general rule it is always best to avoid any food that includes the word ‘garbage’ in its title

by dario argento on Sep 30, 2009 9:28 PM PDT up reply actions
The problem was less the quality of the food and more the quantity
there was just way too much going on in that thing for any one thing to stand out, so I immediately regretted my purchase. I will go back because I’ve heard nothing but great things, but as a rule ‘garbage’=/=food
