Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Well, Canzano actually broke some news.

After Ben made some ominous comments in April/May about Allen's health, I figured something was going on behind the scenes. There was a lot of smoke for there to be no fire.

The big parts of the article:

"Allen was sick at the end of last season. His skin looked gray. His eyes were sunken. He shuffled around during the Blazers-Rockets playoff series, sometimes with a doctor alongside him."

"While the front office was chasing free agents, and while the players were working on their games this summer, something more significant was going down -- Allen went underwent another heart surgery.

'I'm fine, finally,' Allen said Tuesday. 'I'm much, much better. I hit a few bumps in the road.'"

Canzano seems to love writing about people with medical issues—not much for privacy.

You know how people pray for the ill at church, often by name?

It is starting to get some attention by caregivers.

Kinda funny. Potentially, in the future, not being aloud to pray for people at church without paperwork.

Canzano prays that someone will be ill

so he can have something to write about.

really Blazers Edgers?

I love how this post is about Paul Allen having serious heart issues and half of the comments from viewers make it about the writer. None of the four comments so far have been about Paul Allen and his recovery. Interesting..

Honestly-a very relevant story being that it pertains to the owner of the team this website is dedicated to but it’s becoming way too trendy to hate on JC on this website that you can’t let the opportunity pass you by!

I have a secret: he’s just a dude who writes a column for a dying newspaper who happens to have an outlet to speak his mind on a radio station that you don’t need to tune in to.

Some of you waste way too much of your precious time loathing a dude who doesn’t care what you think about him.

Best wishes go out to Mr Allen and his family. I’m glad the surgery was a success. I’m extremely relieved to hear the news-the way the media has cast Allen’s #1 guy, KP this summer makes me think that if Allen had to sell, or heaven forbid he died-that would most likely mean the axe for KP with new ownership.

C'mon, at least we didn't call Travis stupid.

We aren’t being that trendy.

I’m really glad he is doing well too. He has been an incredible owner, and of course, is always building something so crazy it blows my mind. We should preserve some of his stuff so 1000 years from now when people look back, they will think we all got around by traveling over a mile below the surface of the ocean in a submersible yacht (with a bar).

I guess I’m just prone to getting off track.

Our prayers for your continued recovery are with you Mr. Allen!

here's the deal though

P. Allen never issued a press release saying he had heart surgery. There was never an announcement from Vulcan. This seems to be the first we’ve heard of it.

Apparently JC caught wind of the situation and decided to make a column about it. Did PA save this very interesting fact and say, “I’m not going to make this public and save it so I can tell J Canzano at Blazers media day so he can write a column about it.” That’s possible I guess. It’s also possible that JC found out about it and then ran with it all the way to the presses.

The point is that usually personal medical issues are considered private. Sports is a little different because the performance of the athlete depends on their health and reporting on medical conditions is often done and is sometimes mandatory (the NFL injury report—Jets got fined for not disclosing Favre’s condition at end of last season). Sometimes reporting on the health of a player is supposed to be done (Dwight Jaynes saying Pritchard broke the law by telling ppl about Darius’ knee). But here, we’re not talking about a player, we’re talking about owner. Does the owner’s health affect the future of the franchise? Sure it does. But doesn’t the health of the owner of any business affect the future of it? Probably. Should we still respect peoples’ privacy when it comes to medical issues?

If PA went up to JC at practice and said, “Hey, get a load of this. I had surgery last summer . . . blah, blah, blah . . .” then PA obviously wanted JC to write about it or didn’t care. But if JC found out about it some other way and wrote the column, he was leveraging a “secret” about someone’s medical history to sell papers. That’s seems wrong to me. Maybe it isn’t, but I just want to respect peoples’ privacy more.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
