I can't wait to play Phoenix this year.
Channing Frye to Start at Center for Suns.
http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/09/28/channing-frye-to-start-at-center-for-suns/
I cannot wait to see Joel and Greg school Channing at center when we play Phoenix. If he is the starting center they better look to score 120+ points per game if they are goona win any games this year. I don't have a problem with Frye other than he is not a starter on a winning team.

Good for frye
I’m excited to see that also. On offense his style will fit very well around amare. On defense, I’m not sure how they plan for this to work.

Phoenix plans for defense?
Since when?

Louis Amundson and Robin Lopez
are the hustle/energy/defensive-minded guys. Everybody else is gonna run and gun like a mofo.
Mike Wahle(OG), Walter Jones(LT), Chris Spencer(C), Marcus Trufant(CB), Deion Branch(WR), Sean Locklear(OT), Brandon Mebane(DT), Leroy Hill(LB), Lofa Tatupu(LB), Josh Wilson(CB), Justin Griffith(FB), Matt Hasselbeck (QB)

I disagree, a bit.
I do agree that any team running Frye out as their starting Center is in for a world of trouble, despite any other talent that team has. However, if you start him at Power Forward, he’d look a lot like LaMarcus Lite (15 and 6?) and I think he could help a good team from that spot.
One thing is for sure, his game is NOT suited to come off the bench.
Last thing:
I am VERY happy for Frye. It’s great that he’s getting this opportunity, and it sounds like he picked the perfect signing spot in terms of getting onto the floor. Now hopefully they don’t have to scrape him off of said floor when he plays a REAL center.

I agree
Frye excelled as a starter at PF. Not so much as a reserve player. In Phoenix, he and Amare will start, and I think it is moot as to who technically plays center. I think he will earn his spot in the league and show that he is worth some money as a solid servicable big man but not an allstar. I expect him to put up far better play in Phoenix with consitent mintues than he did in Pdx with few minutes.

not only will the minutes be more consistent
they have nash, and amare will be in the post demanding a double team. When he played for us he did not get teamed with a back to the basket big man who required a double team. (Oden was the closest we had, and he didn’t really req a double team yet. I expect he will this year) End result for Frye is this is a great situation for him.

Channing will knock down some 3s
to pull our centers out of the middle. This is not a great matchup for us, unless we build our offensive game plan around our centers, and that isn’t our usual offense.

Clearing out the key
allows Amare, Steve and Grant to work the middle.

As far as I'm concerend Channing can shoot those all day long
And with their center clanging 20 foot jumpers our rebounding advantage will go from big to ridiculous.

If he doesn't make any
If he makes them, someone needs to go out and cover him, which pulls our center away from the basket. Then, it is Amare vs. LMA for the rebound.
That is, unless we want our center to try to guard Amare, and foul out.
We should beat them, but the way to do it is to pound the ball inside to Greg and make them try to stop him. If we play a perimeter game with a matchup like this, we could lose badly.

if Channing starts shooting 3s instead of long 2s, his value goes up a lot
Phoenix should be drilling this into his head.

I'd like to see him play
But I can’t get angry at him, he’s too nice a guy.

Does anyone think Channing can guard NBA 5s?
Oden is going to have a field against the Suns.
Roy, Aldridge, Oden, Rudy, Batum, Outlaw, Webster, Bayless, Blake, Miller, Joel... Holy crap!

The truth is...
The 5 position as a whole is so weak in the NBA that having Channing play the 5 is only a huge disadvantage against maybe 6 teams all year.
Okur for Utah is a good example

This is a good point
in the west there aren’t many 5s who will be very effective. To bad they don’t have D’ant leading the team. I think he would’ve got this team into the playoffs on the back of 110 ppg.

No disrespect to the Suns or Channing,
but this shows the talent gap between us and Phoenix. Channing wasn’t even in the rotation last year and he will start there. and we weren’t as deep last year as we’ll be last year.

Channing’s different role in Phoenix would not be so much about the talent difference as it would be about a philosophical difference relating to coaching strategy.
They picked up a player that fit their system. Channing picked a team where his skills would be maximized. The question is, will it work?
There is more to an athlete than how fast they can run, they also better be able to see what they are doing and know why they are doing it.

I am far more excited for the Blazers to play Utah (Vegas gave them better odds than us of winning the title, plus the Millsap mess last summer) and the media’s “golden child” team, OKC, than Phoenix.
Honestly I mostly just feel sorry for Phoenix. They should have won at least one title this decade (like the Drexler-era Blazer teams).

when Channing improves his TS% above .392 in the playoffs wake me up
Dude can’t shoot now. Starter bench he still has the same shots only as a starter he plays against better defenders (starters).
He averaged 3.0 total rebounds per 36 minutes in the playoffs. Poor shooter, really poor rebounder it would appear he will be begged to shoot by opposing defenses while they double-team Amare.
I love Channing to death and really hope he is a different player for the rest of his career.
