Junk Drawer 7/29 - Game Open Thread Edition

Ok basically I'm making this thread so everyone can practice for the season. Consider this our training camp.

Star-divide

There have been some game open threads this season, but summer league was a long time ago. So this is for all the trouts out there that haven't been practicing all summer and need to get in game shape.

So just post comments that you would post in a game thread. Post things that you expect to say a lot, or only a couple times in game threads. Or post something about this world about Rudy being a alien or something. The comments can build off of each other or be totally random. It doesn't matter. JUST POST!

if we could trade outlaw for a real banger

Roy, LMA, real.banger, Przy, Oden

Since LMA has such a pretty shot and plays great perimeter defense, he can surely play SG. And Przy (with his new 3-pt shot) and the real.banger can shift between forward positions like Lewis and Hedo did last year.

I wonder if LMA is ready to become a point-PF?

by idoltime on Sep 29, 2009 1:30 AM PDT up reply actions

you know even this line up might work

LMA, Bayless, Batum, Przy, Oden

Because it’d be like even more extreme than seeing Magic and Scott or Nixon next to each other in the back court. And Bayless, LMA, and Batum can guard anyone ever existing on the perimeter. It’s like.. pick your poison, but since they are all poisons you are just picking between different poisons. It’s brilliant.

by idoltime on Sep 29, 2009 1:37 AM PDT up reply actions

LMA would post up or shoot over the smaller PG defender

Bayless would drive past the lead footed SGs, Batum would be the same, and Joel would suddenly become a Shaq-like post presence once he is guarded by small stupid PFs.

I love Martell
Nicolas Batum, last season’s starter at small forward, admitted Monday that his ambition was to start. Moments later, however, when Martell Webster spoke, he relayed a different message. After starting two seasons ago and missing virtually all of last season with a foot injury, Webster said starting is not his primary concern.

“I don’t blame (Batum), that’s great motivation,” Webster said. “For me, that’s just not where my mind is this year, for this team. For me it’s just going out there and doing what I’m capable of doing and whatever it is that coach asks me. I don’t care about the starting position. That doesn’t mean much to me. Most importantly to me … is being on the court when the buzzer rings. I want to finish games.”

i was at the preseason

game he played in last year where he originally got injured and judging from that (which was a year ago) he was much better than he was the previous year. Looked much more aggressive, attacked the rim, very active. He looked great. If he can still do that after the injury, he’ll be a huge asset. I think he’d be great finishing games…unless we’re up by 2 or 3 and need defensive stops. Of course, depending on Batum’s improvement….

the problem is

talking about women’s uteris’ as if it’s still up for debate what we do with them is demeaning , derogatory and sexist.

I can’t stand how it’s used as a way to pander to the political right or left , to get money to attract uninformed voters. It’s dishonest and yeah there’s ton’s of other things we should be worrying about, litk corporate politcal contributions, seperation of church and state, et al..

no one flipping politician on the right could give a rat’s ass about whether a chic gets her uteris sucked clean when she finds herself preggo and doesn’t want to be preggo. He cares about the $ coming from the PAC’s and church groups (james dobson etc) and the voters who are religious and think women who abort kids cause their problems.

this recent post is about the politician on the right who hypocritically pointed out a couple days ago on the House floor that pregnancy coverage shouldn’t be mandated in health reform because “it’s an elective condition” ..

i think the bigger point to be made, in addition to what you are pointing out, is if you’re going to subscribe to preventative or elective verbiage in the health care discussion you need to start proposing a method for firebombing fast food chains and education systems not pushing for PE and general health ed. The hypocrisy, as you point it out has much bigger stakes than the money received—the cultural conscious of our society, and the health there of. that being said, i’m not trying to take away from your opportunity to drop f bombs left and right…

i get what you're saying entirely.

You talk about how we need to move past preconceived notions and I think that the idea that rich white men make all the decisions and shape society is one of those notions it’s time to let go of, whether it’s true or not. While I agree with you that it’s still party true that rich white males still hold the most power in our society I do think they’re influence has dropped dramatically and I don’t like the blanket inference that the opinions of white males are automatically influenced by previous generations of white male decision makers. Mostly it irks me when you make statements like this:

yeah well sure coming from your white male perspective it’s convenient to point that out
because I find it very reductive. To attribute someone’s opinion to the facts that they’re male and white is horrible.

I don't know why you're a feminist.

But I’m sure you have good reasons.

I think that any sort of group, feminists, NAACP, PETA, religious groups can be in danger of becoming another form of those they find fault with and some of the language you use (or how you say it) is, to me, indicative of this. “cause” groups should be about affecting change through positive action, not affecting change by pointing blame at others.

by DrivetheLane on Sep 29, 2009 1:55 PM PDT up reply actions

this would be a good reason not to read into the language

i use between another poster with whom I have developed a certain repore

“pointing blame”. You say this is what I’m doing, however if you read any of my further clarifications you would understand that is not my intent whatsoever .

Furthermore your use of “cause groups” to define what feiminsm and NAACP are prove my point.

Lastly, it is not a secret that American social norms and the gender construct in this country have been defined by white men. Period. That is neither a good or bad thing , it just is.

you’re right. it wasn’t the best idea for me to read into language with which you’ve already a mutual understanding with someone else.

I wasn’t saying you specifically are pointing blame. I know that you’re not. I was speaking in generalities with my last point. I apologize for not making that clear.

Any group with an agenda has a cause, thus I call them “cause groups”. I’m don’t mean this in a derogatory fashion though I personally don’t like “cause groups” as an institution, though I sometimes agree with they stand for.

I agree with your last point. You say it’s neither a good nor bad thing and I agree, which is why I don’t see the point in constantly bringing up the “white, male” argument when discussing feminism/gender issues.

I don’t think I’m nearly as educated in these issues as you, and it probably wasn’t the best idea for me to even say anything. I usually try to stay out of these conversations when they start on here, I was just irritated at a single comment and let my irritation get the better of me. I doubt we’re all that at odds at the base of things.

by DrivetheLane on Sep 29, 2009 4:11 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah word, im highly defensive, sorry for snapping

i was just tryin to joke around w/ Arkitekt.. he and i have had some really contentious arguments about this very topic and I was trying to poke fun at him..

I generally try to stay away from “why women/minorities are where they are” because it generally doesn’t solve any issues. Althought it’s always important to understand how we got ‘here’, It’s 100 x more important to figure out how to get away from ‘here’. YOu follow me?

In moving forward we always have to look back.

For my part, I apologize if My “white male social construct” comment offended you or anyone else, it was not my intent and I can see where you are coming from , because topically speaking it seems accusatory .

I asked him how he knew one of the knocks on him was about his basketball IQ.

"I read the blog, and I saw some of it,’’ he said almost sheepishly. "I wanted to write back on it, but I said some things don’t deserve a response. Everybody has their opinion, and me sitting and arguing about it ain’t gonna solve it.’’

It’s one of the reasons why Outlaw contends that he is one of the most hated Blazers and likely to be traded. He says he is "fine" with Portland ("heck, been here six years, it’s like a second home") but at the same time he claims he has never been embraced.

"I really do think that,’’ Outlaw said. "I’ve gotten some hate mail.’’

Just leave Travis alone!!!!!!!!!! He reads what you say.

If you guys have 20 teams in the league it is usually a good idea to limit the roster a little bit to make things more competitive between the guys who have tons of time scouring waiver wires vs the dudes or dudettes who dont have 23hrs a day to devote to FBB

are you guys doing roto or h2h?

FWIW I would think of dropping the 2 center requirement

You are right

But at the same time, I think having a biggish roster in a 20 team league will be part of the fun.

You’re gonna have to choose from the relative fantasy dregs to win…

by Mortimer on Sep 29, 2009 11:07 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it is cool to have a balance of people who are super into it, the spreadsheet crowd, against those who have other duties, and it is nice to structure a league so that you can level the playing field a bit.

big leagues→hardcores
smaller rosters→casual players

so I like to set them up to have a balance

I would suggest doing something like waiver dollars as well. I think it adds another level to the game

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

I will talk about DeJuan Blair no more forever

by jonestr on Sep 29, 2009 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions

With this

I think we’re trying for people who are pretty into it, or at least wanna try to be pretty into it. Make the waiver wire and FA more important, more strategy, less luck in the draft (though obviously the first few picks have a serious advantage).

I dunno how waiver dollars work…

by Mortimer on Sep 29, 2009 11:17 AM PDT up reply actions

you get a set amount of $ for the season and then you put in a waiver request with how many dollars you want to spend on that player. If you are the highest bidder you get them.

once your money runs out you are done on the waiver

Super sad face

Oregon senior cornerback Walter Thurmond will have surgery on his right knee and will miss the rest of the season.

The surgery has yet to be scheduled for Thurmond, who was injured on the opening kickoff of the Ducks’ 42-3 win over California on Saturday.

He would also miss whatever bowl game the Ducks would participate in this season.

if it can see your email in your Profile page the crawler can just grab it. (that’s the email it was sent to right? if not then they sold your email)

they probably ran a crawler in this JD and every new post in the last 90 days.

it would look for the word “by” and capture the names after the first space to the word “on”.

Amazing how good and young top climbers have become. This guy is 16, and is doing things most pro climbers with much more strength and twice his age never did. He'll likely become the best free and boulder climber of all time.

Warmup http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNLb8oIGK7w
Quite a lot of videos on YouTube

He has climbed everything up to X+ at age 11, and now 9a, XI routes. Some onsight, without prior inspection and incredibly fast. He can do routes that require maximum strength, that are very tough to stand for the legs, that exhaust you with their length, etc. all over Europe in completely different stones.

In all honesty

I think they should just kill the crazy homeless. They are no different than stray animals that no one wants. That cop is right. Cops should be worried about more important things, if we had a Homeless Control program like we do with animals, the world would be a better place.

by tominhawaii on Sep 29, 2009 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Can you think of a single homeless person, besides Kimbo Slice?

They never get better and write a book, a song, paint a painting, become a father or mother, get a job, or even get on some government program. Most the homeless here that live on the beaches all smoke meth. I think the homeless are the biggest internal threat to our nation.

by tominhawaii on Sep 29, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions

The crazy ones should be taken off the streets, I agree

Programs to help current sane ones get jobs, a place to stay, get back on their feet, and programs to get the crazy ones the crap outta there.

by Mortimer on Sep 29, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

And all homeless in LA should move to a small town somewhere

Where they can afford the rent. No program to help people get back on they feet will get them a job good enough to pay LA rent.

by Mortimer on Sep 29, 2009 2:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd be fine with prison camps

Ones where they don’t have to work and stuff, I just don’t think it would work. I knew of a homeless guy in Eugene who fell asleep nest to train tracks and the steps up to a boxcar smashed his face. I knew of him after the incident because he face was mangled. Some hospital fixed him, but I think saving someone who fell asleep next to a railroad track, is a waste of money.

"Human nature, in no form of it, could ever bear prosperity," John Adams wrote in a letter to Thomas Jefferson, warning against the coming corruption of his country.
Evidence of this shift in values is all around. Some of the signs are seemingly innocuous. States around the country began sponsoring lotteries: government-approved gambling that extracts its largest toll from the poor. Executives and hedge fund managers began bragging about compensation packages that would have been considered shameful a few decades before. Chain restaurants went into supersize mode, offering gigantic portions that would have been considered socially unacceptable to an earlier generation.

Someone with insider connections on RealGM who has been right before claims Greg has grown an inch since the Blazers drafted him and a quarter of an inch since last season

He is now standing 6’11.75" w/o shoes. By Timbo’s Subjective Guide To Player height that would probably make him 6’10.5" and by the NBA’s We Like To Make Our Players Bigger Than They Are he would be a cool 7’2" in shoes :)

But I think Rudy might have taken the record for most 3s in a game in just one half.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
