Andre Miller - first impression at Media Day?

Wow -- I am excited to have Andre on the team and really look forward to what he can bring.

But I have to say he made a terrible impression in the live feed with Casey at Media Day.  He came in complaining about answering questions, something about having already done all this before at some point, and then threw down "I'll answer just 5 questions."

To his credit, Casey gave him 5 questions and thanked him for being there, and then stated that he wanted to convey to Andre that he wasn't going to ask him questions if he wasn't in the mood for them....

But it gave out a strange impression, in my mind, especially compared to the attitude and excitement conveyed by every single other player I saw....

Am I off the mark here?  Or did anyone else feel disappointed or at least kind of surprised by his attitude?

At first it seem odd but then again I’m fairly certain Andre’s reticence is known. Honestly I’m more concerned with him getting more than 5 dimes per game off than how many questions he answers.

Reticence is easy even with 100 questions. It is called deflection. You can still look fine while saying nothing.

to be honest

Besides Martell, it didn’t seem to me like anybody wanted to be there per se. I don’t blame them, basically an entire day of talking to the media for people who aren’t really starved for attention.

My complaint

about the attitude is that they are making a load of money…and lets face it, they started at 11 and were done by 5. I work from 730 to 530 every day, and make less in a year than Andre makes in one week. Not to mention he gets a few months off to vacation, compared to my few weeks. Granted, he works on some holidays, and has to be away from family and all that, blah blah blah, but private jets, 5 star hotels and 150 bucks food per diem doesn’t sound that bad. I dunno, sorry for the rant, but the dude could be jovial for half a freakin’ day for what he is paid. Some of these pros really forget how far off from reality their lives are compared to average joe (or dave).

whining about it publicly us rather classless.

Ultimately we all have bad days where we don’t present our best side, and so I’ll raise my eyebrow and hope it was just a tired guy frustrated with being asked the same questions every day for the past month. I might get cranky too.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

Not that it is an excuse, but I don't think he knew his terms of the interview was being broadcasted

It was a convo he had with Casey off to the side. The camera was running, and Andre thought he was at that station already.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

Yeah, I thought the whining....

…was pretty unprofessional. Casey explained it away, that Miller had just gone through a live chat when he signed.

I was hoping that he was joking about answering only 5 questions.

Miller was .... disappointing.

Howard had a great interview. He could turn out to be the best 14th man we’ve had sitting on the bench. He seems like someone a young player would want to talk to in order to get through tough times. Howard had great things to say about Webster today.

Quick just said he had talked to Roy today and he felt that Roy wanted Blake to start.

He was very emphatic. He said that Roy told him he would be very uncomfortable playing with Miller, or words to that effect.

Things could easily change during preseason, but I think this is going to get interesting. Quick predicted that the training camp would get so competitive that he expected fisticuffs, or at least players having to be pulled apart during practices. Maybe that’s Nate and KP’s plan to toughen up the team.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Sep 28, 2009 4:18 PM PDT reply actions

Perhaps.

But if you watched Miller and Roy today there couldn’t be two more different personalities. That may have nothing to do with their ability to play together, but it sometimes can.

From past experience, I do not trust Quick that far...

In another article mentioned below at O-Live, Roy is very complimentary of Miller. So, either Roy speaks with a forked tongue (and is trying to take away some of Nate’s authority) (which I doubt) or Quick is speaking with a pitchforked tongue looking to stab somebody. In any case I do not see these comments as the kind of comments that Brandon would make (he is classier than that).

I'm just reporting what Quick said about his conversation with Roy.

Draw any conclusion you want, but obviously Brandon isn’t going to keep talking to Quick if he gets misquoted too badly. Anyway, here is the exact quote of what Quick said today.

“Brandon Roy, I don’t know what he said on your show, but he was very, very, adamant that look right now I am very comfortable with Steve Blake, pure and simple. He said: ‘if you put Andre Miller and I out on the court right now we would be very awkward, it would not fit, and I am very, very, comfortable with Steve Blake.’ He was absolutely adamant about that. I think that’s a very key thing for people to realize as they enter training camp.”

Quick goes on to explain his (Quick’s) reasoning why it would make sense for Blake to start, and finally concludes “I’m just saying don’t be surprised if Andre Miller comes off the bench for this team …”

Again, I’m just reporting what Quick said. Draw your own conclusions.

Thanks for the exact words

It’s a very surprising quote. Not quite on Monta Ellis-level, but I’m surprised to hear Brandon say that.

It doesn’t mean that Roy and Miller can’t eventually become ‘comfortable’ together on the court. Just a barometer reading of where things are right now.

Exactly, it's just where things stand at the moment.

As I said above, “Things could easily change during preseason”.

Mike Barrett also said tonight that Brandon was openly supporting Blake to start today. So Quick may be overemphasizing what Brandon told him, but he isn’t out in left field since Barrett heard something similar.

BTW, here is the audio link to Quick’s statements, which appear in the last 15 minutes or so of the file. He goes on for quite some time on this subject.

Exactly, it is non-news at this point.

I, too, think it makes sense to start Joel Przybilla and Steve Blake, with Greg Oden and Andre Miller ...

finishing games. Przybilla and Blake can get their 20 minutes per contest playing the first 6 minutes of the first and third quarters along with the first 4 minuets of the second and fourth quarters, which’d then allow Oden and Miller to get their 28 minutes per game during crunch time. It’d be the best of both worlds.

Greg's going to win the starting job, unless he gets hurt

Oden said he loves Przy, but he plans to be the starter

Joel said he’ll be ready for anything (whatever role, how many minutes. He also prefers to play on a winner. No one asked him about his contract option…)

Unless Nate has an overriding reason to bring Oden off the bench, Greg will be starting

Nate said he’ll challenge all the players not to complain about their PT, after the team dinner tonight. He said “if you don’t like your role, come see me, don’t pop off to the media” or words to that affect.

GO, Andre, and Martel should start if they earn it by showing that they are better players.

By playing Greg and Andre more minutes and allowing them to finish games, you seem to be saying that you think that Greg and Andre are better players than Joel and Steve. And I agree.

But you also seem to be espousing a unique philosophy, a playing rotation where inferior players start even though the better players want to start and have come right out and said so. Would you follow the same pattern with Martel if he proves to be a superior player this year over Nic?

That would be three better players who want to start, coming off the bench? If I am better than the other guys at my position, I want to start! The minutes can be adjusted when I start just as well as if I am coming off the bench.

The NBA is about the $. Bringing superior players off the bench, and possibly hurting their market value is a recipe for player personnel problems. Teams have done it with a single "sixth man" in the past, where they can still feature that player as a scorer, but with more than one guy, it would seem to me to be stretching the concept a little too far.

To me, the best players, the players that make the team perform best, earn the right to start. That is a tradition that has been established with good reason.

There is more to an athlete than how fast they can run, they also better be able to see what they are doing and know why they are doing it.

it was made pretty clear earlier today

that Nate is more interested in finding players who fit well together as a unit. We talked about this back in July when McMillian first talked about Blake remaining the starter. Brandon and Steve have synergy that only happens when 2 guys have played together for awhile. Can Roy and Miller develop a similar familiarity on the court? Sure, but it’s going to take time. I see no problem with Blake starting each half and Miller finishing the games, as long as the team is winning. If the Blazer players let their egos get the better of them and “cause a distraction” (as the media likes to say) then they’re going to get a “come to Jesus” meeting with Nate. If they still don’t get with the program KP will start making some phone calls. There’s enough depth on this team that no one should be complaining about not starting, or how much they’re playing. McMiilian is selling “all for one, and one for all” tonight, and it’s up to the players to “buy in” or bug out

Unit, God, chemistry. I get that

It is a long season and there is plenty of time to develop chemistry using the best players. If Greg, LMA, Roy, Martell, and Andre are the best players, and will eventually form the best unit, then they should be given the chance to start and play consistent extended minutes together. Looking into the future is also part of a coach’s job.

If swapping in another player will make them better at playoff time then that player will have earned his right to play and start. I guess I am saying that I just hate short term, narrow minded thinking. It is all about matchups and winning in the PLAYOFFS.

We are going to win in the regular season no matter who starts, that is really not what I am concerned about. A secondary concern that I have here is to make Roy less of a one on one ball dominator, and more of an efficient off the ball slasher and scorer. I look forward to Roy developing his game further, and despite his comfort level with Blake, I do not automatically buy the idea that he knows what is best for him.

I couldn’t agree more. This “we got a whole lot of players we need to take a look at” mentality has got to come to an end, at some point. Roy said it best yesterday “you can play a rotation of 10 guys at the beginning of the year, but it’s not going to tbe that way, later” If injuries don’t thin the herd, then KP will need to make some tough decisions

In the meantime, Nate needs everybody to “buy in” and play their butts off during every possession they get out on the floor. The complainers will weed themselves out, it’s inevitable in a group dynamic

I enjoy the regular season, but it is the playoffs and advancing in the playoffs that really get me going. And I don’t want any politics or personal preferences to get in the way of that. Best players vs best unit
It is a long season and there is plenty of time to develop chemistry using the best players. If Greg, LMA, Roy, Martell, and Andre are the best players, and will eventually form the best unit, then they should be given the chance to start and play consistent extended minutes together.

You also have to keep in mind that the 5 “best” players don’t always end up being the best unit. Blake and Miller are very different players with very different skill sets. Most people consider Miller to be a better player overall, but he isn’t better in every situation. Steve Blake is an excellent 3-point shooter while Andre Miller is a 21% career 3-point shooter.

You have to ask what skills the Blazers need in a starting PG playing next to Roy. Roy does a lot of the same things that Miller does, so he might not be utilized very effectively playing next to Roy and Blake’s ability to spread the floor might end up being more valuable. Even after Roy and Miller have time to develop chemistry the starting lineup might be more effective with Blake instead Miller, even though Miller is the superior overall player.

When you have this much depth

it’s ok to “think outside the box”. Your best players should play the most, but there is no rule that says the best players have to start.

True, but they are openly saying they want to start.

I personally believe this is part of what we were seeing at media day with Andre. He is likely looking considering his market value in two years and does not want to take any bigger hit to his pocket book than necessary. Can we blame him? I can also see how Dree could be quite angry with Brandon if he is really saying these things. Elbow me, but don’t mess with my future paychecks!

by KINGofMACct on Sep 29, 2009 8:31 AM PDT up reply actions

Market value in two years?

If he’s effective, starting or off the bench, it’s three years.

And this is probably his last contract, either way.

This matters for younger guys, but market value isn’t in the picture for Andre.

Angry with Brandon? Guess what, Andre, this is Brandon’s team, not yours. You are going to have to earn HIS trust and respect, and you have to EARN it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brandon and Nate have discussed this and everything Brandon is saying is planned. This is about TEAM, not about Andre or anyone else.

Andre is a professional. Even if he’s bugged, he’s going to go out there and try and earn it and prove it.

And if Andre plays 28 mpg but doesn’t start, is that really going to hurt his market value anyway? Not at all. It sends the message that he’ll fill any role to win, that he’s all about team. It will help his market value.

And I’m glad he wants to start. Who wants players who want to sit on the bench?

by jscot on Sep 29, 2009 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm sorry, but it is only two years guaranteed.

So, from Andre’s perspective, and rightly so, he should be concerned. I doubt, from the way he talks that he thinks this is his last two years of NBA basketball. If it is, it is very bad for Portland because it likely means his playing ability is about to fall off considerably.

And yes, this is Brandon’s team. But it is also LMA’s, Rudy’s, and GO’s team. And now it is also Andre’s team to run on the floor. And Andre is a proven leader in this league. He and Juwan are part of what Brandon was calling for, now he is going to have to realize that he is dealing with grown up men, not seriously flawed, immature boys like Randolph and Miles.

It is the coaches business to decide who starts! It is Brandon’s business to make it work on the floor. If there is any behind the scenes stuff going on as you suggest, then whoa to Brandon for going along with something like this because it is ill advised. (especially going public with it)

In my opinion, Brandon is going to have to back down on this one, one way or the other, because it is just plain wrong to mess with someone else’s pocket book. And, no matter whether it is ultimately true or not, it is apparent Andre sees it that way, and others on the team will see it that way as well.

Also, we should not underestimate the effects of Andre’s passing ability on team leadership. Greg beamed yesterday when he was questioned about Andre. LMA also beamed about the possibility of getting out on the break with him. Rudy is also looking for him to be the passer that gets him the ball instead of Sergio. From my playing experience, distributing the ball well makes you a leader, going one on one, as Brandon might be doing now may earn you some awards for scoring, but it rarely makes you someone that people really want to listen to.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Brandon a lot, it just that he still may have some growing to do both on and off the court. And Andre just may help him do that. If Andre is the better player, and makes the team better, then he should start, whether Brandon likes it or not. If Brandon is taking sides in this thing now, in which case I will have to hear it from his own mouth, then he is out of line and he needs to apologize to Andre at least personally, if not publicly. If he doesn’t, then we may indeed have problems here that will run deeper than this situation and will spill over with other players.

There is more to an athlete than how fast they can run, they also better be able to see what they are doing and know why they are doing it.

Andre was told before he signed

that he may not start.

No one is messing with his pocketbook. That’s just not true. He has to earn it.

That’s the message from Nate, that’s the message from Brandon. Nate has said all along that Blake is the starter. Did you miss that? So Brandon is saying the same thing. Nate also said that the players know on the floor who is effective even before the coach does.

Don’t worry, if the team is better with Andre starting, Brandon will be on board. He wants to WIN. So does Nate. If Andre earns it, Andre gets it. If Bayless comes into camp and takes the starting job, he’ll get it. Nobody gets anything on this team they haven’t earned, whether they have a max contract, they are a $7 million a year free agent, or a rookie.

Blake HAS earned it. It’s his. It’s up to Andre or Bayless or anyone to take it away from him, and to do that, you have to make your game fit well with the other starters so that as a whole, it is a better unit with you in the game. That’s it. End of story. Play ball.

jscot, please don't get this thing all twisted up. Can we try to be resonalble and cosistent in our positions?

This sidebar got started when AK said that it was just fine for BETTER PLAYERS, players who, had apparently, according to conventional wisdom, earned the right to start, don’t get to start even though they want to. You, seemingly expressing some agreement with AK and accepting the premises in play, chimed in that it was ok to think outside the box when the talent level is this high.

The rational questions are:

1. Should better players start? My answer is unequivocally yes if that is what they want. If not let’s take Roy and LMA out of the starting line up as well.

2. Would not starting when he is the better player be a justifiable offense to AM? My answer is a definite yes. I.e. not something he should be expected to happily adjust to.

3. If you were AM and Roy was publicly calling for you not to start even before training camp, would you be offended? My answer is yes! If this is OK, then let’s have LMA call for Joel to be taken out of the starting line up because Joel hurts his game. Roy is not a coach, and should not act like one (let’s do away with the conspiracy theories, err excuses for bad behavior). Personal one on one talks between Roy and AM are more appropriate, and more typical of good team leadership.

4. Is it ANDRE MILLER’S right to believe that not starting might affect his future earnings? (I.e. don’t starters generally make more than reserves?) How would you like it if one of your coworkers was calling for you not to be promoted (to upper management) when you knew you are the best fit for the position? A. They would be hurting your pocketbook. B. You would have a right to be angry over it. C. An apology would be necessary.

In summary, the best players should start when the regular season starts. These are the players, by definition, no matter who they are, that will give the team the best chance to win in the playoffs. Players should work together as peers and advise each other (communicate with each other) accordingly (don’t make a practice of going behind one another’s backs). And coaches should decide lineups and rotations without asking players to become snitches.

Do we have some general agreement here? I would hope so! Can we admit that we really do not know what the behind the scenes facts are and that the best we can do is agree in principle on those parts of the story that are factual and public?

There is more to an athlete than how fast they can run, they also better be able to see what they are doing and know why they are doing it.

Thanks for numbering things, that helps to break it down.
1. Should better players start? My answer is unequivocally yes if that is what they want. If not let’s take Roy and LMA out of the starting line up as well.

I absolutely disagree. The coach’s job is to put the most effective team on the floor for a full 48 minutes. Often that means that the best players start, because the players who start usually play the most minutes. That is not a given. Travis would have liked to start last year, and by the minutes given to him Nate considered him a better player than Nic, but he did not start. Rudy got more minutes than Nic, but he did not start either. Apparently Nate thought Rudy was a better player, and Nate was willing to play Brandon at SF to get Rudy on the floor, but he didn’t start games that way.

This is why I say outside the box thinking is ok. There is nothing magical about starting. There just isn’t. That focus is individualistic rather than team-centered.

2. Would not starting when he is the better player be a justifiable offense to AM? My answer is a definite yes. I.e. not something he should be expected to happily adjust to.

My answer is a definite no. Not when he was told before coming that Blake was our starter.

Should he happily adjust to it? No, he is a highly motivated player. I’m glad he wants to start, and I don’t expect him to be happy about not starting if he doesn’t.

Should he professionally adjust to it? Of course, he’s a pro. And he will, if it happens. And he’ll work really hard to learn how he can make adjustments that will win him that spot. He’s not just a pro, he’s a student of the game. He’s going to be drawing up plays for Nate and talking with Brandon, etc, etc.

And if he does or doesn’t start, he’s going to be working on synergies with Brandon and other starters. He’ll get lots of game opportunity to work together with them, and they will become effective together.

I personally could care less. The person who has to be convinced is Nate, and he’s saying the same thing. If I’m going to be upset, it will be with Nate. And I wouldn’t be upset with him, either. Andre is a professional. He’s not a rookie. He knows the game.

But then, I like a challenge. Does Andre? He’s overcome a lot of challenges in his life. If he comes in with a sense of entitlement, we won’t get the best out of Andre. If he comes in with a chip on his shoulder knowing that he once again has to overcome challenges to get what he wants, we will get the best out of him.

Best fit. That’s your words. If my boss is looking to promote someone, and they go around talking to me and my coworkers about who would be the best fit for the promotion, they aren’t going to be talking about who has the best legal knowledge, the best finance/economics knowledge, or who has the best IT background. They are going to be asking who is the best fit for that particular position.

But this isn’t even that. A better parallel would be if a supervisor were already in place. And I get hired into the company, and the boss goes around asking people if he should promote me over the guy who is already there, and doing a good job.

Those coworkers are going to look at me and say, “You know, our current supervisor is doing a good job. This new guy looks like he’s good, we know he was good at doing that job in his prior company. But we need to see how he’ll fit here before we’re going to be thrilled about any change. We’re comfortable with what we have, it’s working well. Let the new guy prove himself for a while, fit in, show that he fits with our department and that he’s going to be as good here as he was there.”

That is exactly what Brandon is saying. There’s not a thing wrong with it.

There’s no backstabbing, there’s no snitching. Brandon is backing up what Nate has been saying all summer. Andre is going to have to do more than prove he’s good at his job. He has to prove that, not only is he good at his job, the department will run more smoothly if he takes Steve’s job.

The difference between Andre’s position and a typical work promotion situation is that Andre will get a chance. If I’m hired into a new position, I might never get that chance to run the department and show I can do the job. But Andre is going to get lots of chances to play alongside Brandon and the starters. What is said now matters little. It’s what he does when he gets those chances that determines everything.

I think the main issues will always be

If there’s a player who is clearly outplaying his “competition” during practice and this player isn’t getting as much or more PT at whatever the position, the rest of the team is going to be wondering “why?” This has been seen in numerous situations in all of pro team sports, and when the back-story reasoning is distilled it usually comes down to, 1) how much money the two players have been guaranteed, or 2) the front office is telling the coach who to play (perhaps as a “showcase” for a pending deal…Shareef Abdur Rahim comes to mind, in semi-recent Blazer history)

It’s never as easy as Nate makes it sound when he says “the players will decide who get the most minutes” There are “office politics” in every business, and NBA teams are no exception. The GM’s job is to make sure that the roster is “well-balanced” to mitigate these potential PT conflicts while still providing enough quality depth at every position to overcome (the unexpected, but inevitable) injuries

PT is more of an issue than starting

and I note you talked about getting the most PT. I agree.

If we’re talking about who gets the most burn, it should almost always be the best player, unless there are positional conflicts. But you wouldn’t want a banging PF who is a great rebounder but can’t score playing a lot next to Joel. Fit matters, even if a player is overall “better”.

I've said...

…all along that the big signing The Blazers made this summer was extending Brandon Roy, Andre Miller was secondary.

Only time and results will show how Andre fits in. But I’m not upset at anything Brandon Roy has communicated. Roy has played with Blake, so saying he is more comfortable right now with the guard he has played with in the past should be expected.

If you listen, Roy also talked about working to expand his game to include more off the ball skills. Roy talked about expanding his game to work better with Andre. He’s just saying it might take some time. That’s fair. That’s great actually.

I’ve also always felt this team will use what works. If the reality becomes the starters play better with Blake? Then I think Blake starts. Andre should be excited that he could be a major piece of a 2nd unit that would be a starting unit for many, many other teams.

It’s about team. I’m glad everyone is competitive. I’d expect both Blake and Miller to want to start. But ultimately it will become about what works best and we haven’t seen that yet. Everything is speculation. But ultimately despite what Canzano might say, or what Andre Miller might want, in my opinion as Brandon Roy goes, so goes The Blazers.

Maybe Miller thought we wouldn’t sign him if we weren’t going to start him and maybe he’s realizing that perhaps that isn’t true? Well that’s a lot of maybes but Miller needs to realize it’s all about the team, and that team is Brandon Roys not Millers.

I think it makes sense to start

the players who earn it in the preseason. We can pontificate about why someone needs to start in front of someone else, but it all has to be earned on the court. Anything else is just wrong.

If you earn a starting role, and you want to start, then you should start! Who starts and who doesn't should not be a political matter.

There is more to an athlete than how fast they can run, they also better be able to see what they are doing and know why they are doing it.

That fits his profile as outlined by Timbo in his extensive bio piece. He was never a big friend of opening up towards fans and the media outside of the court.

It was worse when he felt like his current organization didn’t treat him right (Clippers, …), but always prevalent.

Joel said on the news the best part of Media Day is when it's over.

None of the players like it except maybe the rookies. Andre has never been a big media interaction guy, it doesn’t have a big impact on my view of his overall character. He’s one of the nicest guys in the league but not afraid to speak his true feelings or thoughts. Nothing wrong with that.

Here is Canzano's "back story" on Miller's media day meltdown
Andre was kind of cranky around here. We figured out why. It’s why we absolutely don’t "bury" a guy. I like his competitive nature. This is why Miller was mad. Apparently when he was signed and brought to Portland he went through his physical, he did a lot of the promotional stuff. He recorded some of the teases and the radio and TV things that he needs to do. He did that before, thinking that when he showed up on media day that he wouldn’t have to do it again and unfortunately when he got here he not only had to do it all over again, he had to get his physical, he had to do the radio stuff all over again…he was put behind a rookie in the order. So, here’s a veteran player who’s with the Blazers who had a rookie going in front of him who was taking extra time. So Miller was doing a little bit of pouting and that’s what this was about.

Vets hate these things

Actors/directors gotta do press junkets for their movies and shows as well, and it’s just something that gets tiring… even if they know it is part of their nice job and how they portray themselves matters.

I don’t think this is a big deal that Dre was chippy, and if anything I like it from him, since that kind of ’I am sick of this crap and will respond to it" attitude does translate to the court.

I find his reaction...

…disturbing. But at this point that is all.

If it’s a portent of future problems? Who knows? Sure, this franchise just made him a multi-millionaire. Sure I’d think showing up for something called media day, and I’d at least be ready and willing to deal with the media. It’s called Media Day!!?? Coming in with the attitude that I’m not answering questions or only 5 questions, doesn’t make much sense.

Yep, I’m a little disturbed at his attitude. If you don’t like media scrutiny and attention then playing in Portland is going to be a problem.

At this point. I’m now paying attention. No harm, no foul, maybe a bad day. But for a guy we brought in at least in part to be an example and veteran leadership, his attitude was disturbing.

I mean really, we signed Juwan Howard to a one year deal for far less money and he stood on a moving dock on a hot day and talked for 1/2 an hour about how wonderful it was to be a Blazer.

It really is my feeling that these guys while maybe not liking media day, should consider it part of the job. It is what promotes the franchise that is paying them. The media inpart creates the product that they themselves use when negotiating their own contracts. Come on! You’re an N.B.A. professional basketball player. The fans and the media care, you’re making a wonderful living playing a game. Someday it will all be over. Enjoy it while you can. How often does being abrasive with the media work well? Hasn’t everyone learned the best thing to do is embrace the media as positively as possible?

The fact that due to his attitude we even have this post, and are even asking these questions is indicative of what is wrong with his attitude. It’s disappointing that Andre launched his media day “season” with such a thud.

Come on Andre….we forgave you once for saying The Lakers were your favorite team growing up, we’ll let this slide…but we are watching….

"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"

by Krang on Sep 29, 2009 11:50 AM PDT reply actions

That's pretty much my reaction too.

I didn’t like his attitude, particularly after being touted for his veteran leadership, and he is obligated by his contract (it’s in the CBA) to do events of this kind. But it’s a minor infraction. Hopefully by next year he’ll be a little more into interacting with the fans.

It’s very cool that the Blazers set up the live video chat with the players. There were about 5000 fans on-line yesterday following/participating in the video chat sessions. I thought all of the other players, with the possible exception of Bayless seemed to enjoy it. Joel, who hates Media day seemed to have a particularly good time joking around and laughing all through his session.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Sep 29, 2009 12:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Did anyone notice that Bayless seemed concerned with the

lack of questions he was seeing on the monitor in front of him? He kept asking Casey about it. Casey diplomatically gave him a line that he (Casey) was in control of what questions got through. Apparently not many people sent questions for him to answer. Poor kid. Not good for his ego.

It’s a cold world until a person learns that this life will never be about the individual. Life goes on. A star today, a has been tomorrow. MJ even gets dogged now days. Hopefully Jerryd will grow up, stop trying to be the "star" and end up being happier. In the end run he has got to take care of himself emotionally, something that I hope Greg has learned this year as well. No one can please all the people all the time, the best he can do is to please himself with his efforts.

What is does the word, “bandwagon,” mean anyway?

Yes. I felt a little bad for him.

He’s gone from the center of attention after the 2008 summer league to now being almost forgotten with no place in the regular rotation. But he will almost certainly get a chance or two when injuries strike this year. He needs to stay positive (I know he will stay ready) and make the best of those chances when they come.
