How old is Juwan Howard?
His son (and namesake) just committed to play basketball for Western Michigan.

Crazy that an NBA player had a kid as a teenager?
Next thing you’ll tell me he wasn’t married to the mother at the time of conception.
could we have the first father-son team ever next year?

Nate's son is at Arizona. Don't know if that counts. And then there is John Lucas though I think he retired before his son became a pro. And Patrick Ewing. And Kemp of course.

Nice comments guys
my son will be 20 when I am 38
he’ll be 17(and declaring for college) when I’m 35 and i would never say 35 is old.

24.9 years of age
That’s the US average age when a woman has her first child. And so for every woman that waits until she is 33 there is another at 18 who has her first child. Stats from http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_age_of_wom_at_fir_chi-health-age-women-first-childbirth
ON the other end of the spectrum, I have colleauge’s that will be 60+ by the time their children enter college…that is also a really daunting prospect.
Thank you for the statistics
I am just a little perturbed to see a person who had a child at a young age completely trashed. It’s offensive actually and makes me sad. I had a child at a young age so I take this type of stuff personally.

Perhaps "completely trashed" is an overstatement
but Howard has been irresponsible in his private life, unfortunately. He probably wasn’t really mature enough to handle the “opportunities” and temptations well.
Not everyone is mature enough to take on the responsibility of a child at 18. Of course, lots of people aren’t mature and responsible at 33 or 50, for that matter.
Ultimately, it is not a person’s age that determines whether they are ready to be parents.

"the absurd news"
um , that’s pretty rude if you ask me , maybe he isn’t “trashing” him but um, making snide comments about age offends me in this case because like i said already, i am a young parent.
IS ANYONE ever ready to have a child? What does age of a parent even mean ? You know?
it just really offended me that’s all.
Nothing persoal against the great authors of this site, I know ben wasn’t trying to inflict a personal wound against me but still i read that and was like “whoah, come on!”

the absurdity comes from the combination of: juwan howard is still in the nba (unusual to be that old), his son is good enough to earn a college scholarship (also unusual), that he earned the scholarship while his father was still playing in the nba (VERY unusual) and also that he was named juwan howard, jr (not unusual but the icing on the cake).

not to mention that jr. decided to pursue basketball which is no guarantee either.
it’s a very, very unusual situation.

for some further perspective: the only players older than juwan howard in the nba are lindsey hunter, brent barry, shaquille o’neal, kurt thomas, grant hill and kevin ollie. that puts him in 7th out of roughly 400+ players, or the top 2 or 3%.
so while it might not be unusual to be 36 with a high school senior aged child in the real world, doing so while maintaining an nba career is quite difficult.

Oh, come on, Sophia
That was nothing.
I can offend you a lot worse than that without even trying. You are giving Ben too much credit, that was really quite weak as far as offensive statements go.
Probably “bizarre” would have been better than “absurd”, which gives the impression that there is something stupid about it, and there isn’t really. If it is a good thing, it isn’t absurd, and if it is a bad thing, it isn’t absurd, either. It just isn’t absurd no matter which way you cut it. It is highly unusual if not unique. Poor word choice by Ben.
I propose that we roast Ben alive for 36 hours (carefully moderating the temperature so as not to induce sudden heart failure), consign him to the rack in a Spanish Inquisition prison for three days (maybe he’ll stretch enough to play in the NBA AND become Catholic AND learn to speak Spanish to Rudy), and then let Juwan Jr dunk on his head 300 times, each time saying, “I’ll show you ABSURD!”
Think that is good enough?
