Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

This could be a precursor to the NBA season or not but makes me feel quite glad we didn't pick him up.

Brian Colangelo just invented the phrase:

“strategic rest”.

That sounds relaxing AND productive.

I didn't mean to turn you on

by dukedee on Sep 22, 2009 1:54 PM PDT reply actions

Indeed. He looked bad in the EuroBasket, and it's not just because it's a different playing system.

He is likely tired with little rest this year. And at 30, he’s starting to feel it. I’m really glad that deal didn’t go through, not so much for what would happen in the next year or two but for what would happen when he is 33-35 and no team wants to pay $10 to 12 million for him.

Apparently Toronto wants to pay him that....

I’m sooo glad that he skipped out on the Blazers. Best thing that happened all summer. I wonder what Brian Colangelo’s excuse will be for Turkeglue when he doesn’t play well in the regular season????

by jenstcy on Sep 22, 2009 2:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I know KP "moved on" after Hedo signed with Toronto

but at some point it would be nice to hear an explanation re: what Portland’s brass was thinking when they targeted Turk, on July 1st.

(At least, beyond a shallow/surface explanation. I can always go back and read the notes from the first week of July or listen to interviews with KP or Nate, if they’re still archived)

Sure, we can all breathe a sigh of relief now, but don’t forget that Portland did make a 5/50 offer to Turk. So whatever thought process that led the management team to make that decision is still very much in place

It's all about SPAM, baby. Spend it or lose it...

They wanted side pick and rolls with Oden, hoping to turn him into Dwight Howard.

10 mil/yr isn’t a bad contract, it’s his age that’s the issue – I get that. But if you’re the Blazers, looking to make a trade 3-4 years down the road, 10 mil is easier to move than 4 mil. Teams usually want to unload bigger contracts and keep reasonable ones, and since the Blazers will be over the cap from now on, it’s easier to match up salaries with a bigger contract. There were trades the Blazers wanted to make the year before RLEC (when they were still over the cap thanks to the Steve Francis buyout), but didn’t have big enough salaries to match.

Don't like answering a question with a question ....

…. but why worry and complain about stuff that didn’t happen?

Doesn’t matter whether it might have. It didn’t. Casting aspertions on Pritchard in this case strikes me as Major League nit picking.

That's an absurd, half-baked analogy.

I’d gladly let a porn star — even one who has a butch hairstyle — fellate me for free; however, I surely wouldn’t give Hedo Turkoglu that ill-conceived contract offer. Man, those are two entirely different situations.

a porn star, then that’d make her a pro. Besides, I’d be thinking with a head other than the one on my shoulders at that time.

Paul Allen wanted action

this offseason, and KPs feet were in the fire. he knew HT would not accept the Blazers offer, but he had to make his boss think he was doing something, even though all he wanted was Andre Miller. not only do GMs have to fool other GMs, they have to fool their bosses sometimes, too. crafty!

KP knew no such thing. Wheels said that KP was very PO’d that HT walked away from the Blazer’s offer

Agreed

I was skeptical from the very beginning about signing him and now I’m extremely glad we got Miller instead. The only other “possible” (well at least in our amateur gm minds) move that I would have preferred was a trade for Kirk involving Trout/Blake with a more minor PF signing with the extra cap space. Overall, a nice summer of almost-mistakes turning into a solid signing.

indeed.

I didn’t exactly want Miller either, thinking his contract would be bad. I was very pleased though to find out he had a real reasonable contract and am glad to have him aboard. It’s funny how your perception can change on a player depending on the kind of money they’re making. If Miller signed a 3-4 year guaranteed deal I’d hate it. Not because I don’t like him but because I think it would be more than hes worth. Same with Hedo, that contract offer was just atrocious, 2-3 years at around 7m would have been easier to swallow. Hedo could have helped, but not help at a 5y/50m level.

by Bskey on Sep 22, 2009 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

yup

I would have been on board with a 2-3 year/20-25 million dollar contract for Hedo… but not 5/50+.

by jksnake99 on Sep 22, 2009 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

with all due respect

if KP had made a 2-3 year/20-25 million dollar offer to Hedo, we never would’ve heard about it, because Turk’s agent would’ve dismissed it out of hand

very true

point is, we came way closer to signing Hedo than we should have given his asking price.

Turk's a Good but not Great player.

Both he and Milsap should be sending gift packages to the Blazer brass if they haven’t done so already.

I think Milsap is actually worth the contract he recieved

He is a young player who is improving, as opposed to Turkoglu who is just going to get worse as he ages.
