Brandon Roy is selfish
After reviewing an article over at Hoopshype I started thinking about how much of a 'leader' Brandon Roy really is for this team. While almost all of Blazer nation believes he is or will become the greatest Blazer of all time, I sit here believing he is no more of a leader than Zach Randolph was. I have now realized that our very own Brandon Roy has become one of the NBA's most selfish players. While many Blazer fans are blinded by their fandom and loyalty towards the Blazers, many NBA observers and writers have seen the light as to the player that Brandon Roy really is.
On the court:
He has very good all-around ability, but I cringe at how he squeezes the ball for much of the shot clock. It will be interesting to see if Andre Miller can keep the ball long enough to at least run the offense before Roy runs to it and goes one-on-one. I think that selfish part of his skills needs to change early in the game to allow teammates to gain a flow. He will find out that he would become much more potent, like Kobe has found out, when he plays more of a decoy early and becomes the assassin later. I anticipate Miller having a calming influence, allowing him to flow to a much better season. Hoopshype
It's clear KP knows Brandon is selfish. Why else bring in Andre Miller when so many fans were clamoring for Roy to play the point more? Roy's unwillingness to pass at the beginning of games have cost us too many times. Why do you think Travis Outlaw shoots the ball every time he touches it? Because he knows if he gives it up to Brandon, the ball will not come back to him. Kobe Bryant's maturity over the years to begin deferring to his teammates early in games has improved his ball club tremendously and made them the most elite team in the western conference. This maturity on Kobe's game has also helped him contribute more when the team needs him to hit shots in the 4th quarter. Brandon's ability to take over games in the 4th is undeniable but without having teammates that have contributed all game, teams are able to throw double and triple teams at him without worrying about the impact Roy's cold teammates will make.
When looking over Brandon's stats compared to team stats it is clear that Brandon Roy has decided to rely more on himself and less on his teammates, showing that he has taken his game to a new level of selfishness. He has increased his field goal attempts and free throw attempts while also shooting at 48% from the field compared to his teammates who only shot 46.5% from the field, showing that Brandon Roy is taking all the good shots and passing to teammates when they are not in a position to score. Brandon's assists are also down from last season while his turnover rate has risen.
Off the court:
And there they were afterward, signing autographs – for free, mind you – for hundreds who snaked around the PGE Park outfield. When you consider Brandon Roy pulled in $49 per signature at a recent signing in Mill Creek, Wash., it was a display of sanity and at least a modicum of good taste. Dwight Jaynes
Sorry, that just doesn’t seem right to me. Maybe it was to raise money for charity. If so, I guess that’s fine — but even then I think I’d advise a player to just sign the autographs for free, have someone keep track of how many he signs and then just have the player write a check that would balance out to 50 bucks per signature. For a millionaire, not a big deal.
Here is an ad for Roy’s 90-minute appearance, with no mention at all of charity.
Off the court Brandon has shown that he is also a selfish person when it comes to money. While negotiating his 80 million dollar contract, Roy had the nerve to charge 49 dollars per autograph during a session. Why do you think he hasn't married his long time girlfriend? If they were to split up after marriage, she would get half of everything he's got and everything he has worked so hard to get.
Conclusion:
Overall I think it is clear to see (atleast to me) that Brandon Roy is a very selfish person. He does not care about his teammates, he wants the accolades for himself. He constantly tries to defer attention to his teammates to cover up this fact but I think some people are now starting to see through this act that Brandon puts on. I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes, “Those who do not hate their own selfishness and regard themselves as more important than the rest of the world are blind because the truth lies elsewhere.”

Dude was asked to score
and score he did. In his days at Washington he did much deferring as the coached asked him to take on more responsiblity he did. Here in Portland he is asked to shoulder the load, sometimes that equals “selfish play” as he adjusts to finding a balance ala Kobe. He is not a selfish player though and he will adjust to our talent as it matures.

I miss sarcasm in text ;)
Ok, so judging by the posts below this must be a joke…right?? Either way I do like it if he is a little bit selfish to the effect that he must win. The article referenced was written by someone that has never seen Roy’s game or a stat line, but I hope a part of it is true. Michael Jordan will go down as the greatest of all time because he was selfish. He absolutely had to win, and that need pushed him to be the greatest player/ego/star to ever venture on to an NBA court. Brandon shares this passion, and that “selfishness” will benefit us all :)

Okay, I think and hope that was tongue in cheek -- for good measure this is a comment I lef tint eh fanshot side on this article
Roy is difficult to pigeon-hole. He is certainly not selfish, however. He came into the league on a team in a deep rebuilding curve and in his second year became the main option on offense. He is asked to score.
Saying the closest comparison to Roy is Tony Parker? Roy is NOT a PG. These talking heads don’t get how special a player Roy is. What Roy is definitely not is an incredibly fast, jitterbugging PG in the CP3 or Tony Parker mode.
Comparing Roy to Kobe? Roy will NOT shoot you out of a potential win like Kobe is prone to. Roy is not a classic shooting guard. He doesn’t look to hoist the ball up everywhere. Roy is an absolute gamer, a great athlete who will show you enough to beat you and keep you guessing. Roy is Bill Russell-like in understanding that scoreboard says who wins and who loses, and that eventually you will be judged by your contributions to team goals: Championships.
Roy’s ability to consistently score inside without relying on straight line speed, small-PG penetration, consistent use of elevation, or posting up is otherworldly. Roy sees an edge, takes the ball in against multiple defenders, and finishes at the rim with room to spare. Every time he does that, he again announces to everyone watching the NBA, "I am just that much better at basketball. I am that neighbor kid you could never stop from scoring. And you know what? I’ve moved here to stay."
It is hard to be something new, or to represent old-school basketball to a generation tamed to pigeon players into the few classifications they can understand. Clearly, Reggie Miller saw Roy for how special he is. And Artest, one of the leagues better wing defenders, knows, too. I only hope that fans and announcers in this league can get past their prejudgments and just watch Roy all-out ball. Maybe then they will learn something.

Do you know why he plays Basketball instead of Football? Because he gets 1/5th of the attention in basketball but he’d have TEN other guys stealing his thunder on the gridiron. How are you gonna be a star when there are ten other guys on your side alone all asking for the ball?! In basketball there are only 4 other guys and usually two of them are big and just out there to hit people (like Shaq) so they hardly count. Or maybe that’s hockey but either way I’ve made my (your) point.

Brandon Roy's problem is NOT that he's selfish...
Its just that in his NBA career he has shown he needs the ball in his hands to create opportunities for himself and his teammates. And because he is so good with the ball in his hands, and the majority of his teammates weren’t, he had the ball in his hands a lot. Which is why he might be perceived as selfish.
In actuality he was relatively unselfish as he ranked 4th amongst shooting guards last year in Assist Per Game. So I’d say yes, Brandon needs to do a better job at creating w/o the ball in his hands which Andre Miller should help with. But I’d also argue that when the ball is in his hands he is NOT selfish.

actually, I kind of hear what your saying, but comparing Roy’s leadership to that of Z-Bo immediately kills any point that you were trying to make. Roy may be selfish on the court, but that selfishness on the court usually results with a win. Z-Bo’s had the opposite effect. As for off the court, he has donated plenty of money to charities, scholarships, public parks, etc. And he is engaged to be married as far as I know.

I wonder about sarcasm and satire from time to time. Are there people that truly have the inability to recognize it? Their brain just isn’t wired for it? I think there is a certain percentage of people where that is true.
There also must to be a set of people that have some sort of “-ism” stuck in their mind, and when they see a headline or certain code words, their “-ism” gets triggered. Even though the person may usually get sarcasm, they came into the conversation with a chip on their shoulder, and it disabled their ability to spot it.

yeah there are mental problems, types of autism that can make it hard
to detect sarcasm. Lack of cognitive development and injury can also cause an inability to detect sarcasm. Though it is true, devotion to an “-ism” can definitely impede the ability to detect sarcasm/parody. e.g. all the onion articles that get mistaken for real news. People are sometimes anxious to defeat something they feel is attacking something they care about, alternatively, people are also sometimes willing to believe outrageous things about people they do not like.

Roy is no more selfish than Kobe. I mean that in a good way. Roy is very self confidant, he is the one we want taking important shots and handling the ball down the stretch. One of those Bill James adapted to basketball studies that I can’t cite from memory rated Roy as the most efficient player at his position in the NBA. More importantly, his teammates recognize this and feed him the ball when the game is on the line. Outlaw jacks it up whether Roy is on the court or not. As for autographs, who cares. I’ll never pay for one, and if you don’t want to pay for one, you don’t have to. This is a really stupid post.
by mactastic on Sep 21, 2009 8:55 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
That Hoopshype article was interesting...
The players ahead of Roy were:
Chris Bosh:
It’s time for Chris Bosh to show that he can put a team on his back or ask management to bring in a veteran star to help him along.
D-Will:
When healthy Williams, Chris Paul and Tony Parker are the best all-around point guards at this juncture. I expect Williams to move into the Top 10 after this season if he puts in a full healthy year.
Amar’e:
The Suns are going back to their 7 Seconds or Less offense and Amare will be playing center… I expect him to average 27 to 30 points a game and help Phoenix secure a bottom playoff position this season.
Carmelo:
I don’t like his shot selection and that is why he shot 44 percent last year, but don’t get it twisted because he is a matchup nightmare. He is the best offensive rebounder in the league playing small forward when he commits himself. His post-up ability brings double teams and when he is focused, he is a pretty good defender. The Nuggets just need more leadership from him and more consistency on the offensive end every night. He is their most talented player, but he is not their best player because of these inefficiencies.
So, just to clarify. B-Roy is sooo selfish that he was passed for players who:
1. Haven’t carried their team and hasn’t demanded to management to change the players on the team.
2. Can’t be considered elite because of too many injuries.
3. Won’t be the star in a system designed to score a hundred points a game…. for a 7th seed at best.
4. Don’t lead there team as the star and shoot 44% from the field.
Oh, then it goes to Pau… which I don’t even want to start talking about.
I’m sure glad Eddie Johnson is giving us lessons. I was pretty sure B-Roy was in the top 7 last year, but of course, a selfish player can’t be one of the best…

I agree that the “selfish” reference is out of line.
The unfortunate thing is I agree with much of the rest of the writer’s overall point. I too would like to see Roy decoy early in the shot clock and the game and take over late in the clock and the 4th qtr. He just shouldn’t describe Brandon as selfish. Brandon is effecient and knows what works.

I cringe that the OP could spend this much time writing up this ridiculous argument. Anyone who even entertains the thought of Roy being selfish has clearly never met the guy. He is one of the most genuinely nice guys I’ve ever met, which is unbelievable considering who he is. He is just as good of a person as he is player. Period. Oh yeah and what Brandon wants is a “CHAMPIONSHIP,” not an MVP. I just don’t understand how people can say he’s selfish if they watch any of his games. Roy is outside the top 30 in points in the 1st quarter, but 5th in points in the 4th. He scores when we need him too. If he wanted individual accolades, he’d just win a scoring title, which he could do. He wants to win.

Ol' S&M has really drilled the hole right through his cheek this time.
I think we should all contribute $49 towards a fund for a lifetime supply of shark skin spackle to keep his cheeks in good repair. Otherwise he’ll have to use those dirty socks he keeps in his room to stuff the gaping holes (hmm, gaping holes, add 3 more letters and that’s one of my favorite epithets, but that’s beside the point). That would look disgusting and he’d have terminal bad breath. C’mon people don’t be selfish now!

It's cheaper to hire Antoine Walker for this, who reportedly is talking to 4-6 teams about a comeback because he's spent his $70 million
He could also be our go-to three point shooter while he lectures the team on being unselfish. I hear that is an important quality for our forwards and guards.

Every successful needs a Roy!
Dude, come on. Selfish or not, The Natural has lead this team to where it is today! Without Roy’s “selfishness” he would have passed to Travis, who would have pulled up for a 15ft jumper over 3 defenders, lowering his % of his fg attempt. Meanwhile, Roy, instead of pasing to lower BB IQ players on the team, he continues to get to the rim for a game winning lay-in. I’ll take layins any day over a pull up or a rudy 3. Do the math.
I do read through Brandon. He is determined to bring us a much deserved Banner reading 2010 NBA CHAMPIONS!

right on the money!!!
“Nah, I’ve dropped some pounds,” Roy laughs, and admits many people have noticed the new look. “The odd thing is, I didn’t play much basketball during the summer months. In fact, it’s pretty safe to say I hardly touched a ball.”
So, what was the key, and why the change? After all, Roy had never been someone who was considered to be too heavy.
“After taking a little time off after the season ended, I just started swimming, like every single day. And, I really got into bike riding. After doing this for a while I stepped on the scale and I was at about 203 pounds. I played last season at about 216. I was like ‘whoa,’ and figured that was enough.”
Instead of trying to be Micheal Phelps or Lance Armstrong in the summer, he should focus on trying to be a real.baller to help out our team this year.

Also… as mentioned above, he was trying to get all the ball sharing out of his system. I hear he fully expects his ball back when he returns to playing.

I actually do find this selfish...
I realize that 0.00001% of Portland fans think there’s a selfish neutron in Brandon’s entire lineage, much less in his own body, but is it a coincidence that he spent a nice relaxing summer not playing one single bit of basketball right after signing his megadeal?
Honestly? I’d like to think so. I’d like to think Brandon made a purposeful (if misguided) decision to stay away from basketball to get himself in better shape, or whatever.
But I don’t.
He got paid. Pressure’s off. Time to relax. Sad, but probably true.

Way Off Base....
Roy is not a selfish player or person…
Player:
He is only doing what he is being asked to do. I don’t care that he takes a bunch of shots, because he makes everyone around him much better. And last I checked without Roy the Blazers weren’t doing very well. So if you want to call him a selfish player, than fine cause he wins ball games.
Person:
The argument that Roy is a selfish person is absurd. I have actually seen Roy out and I went and talked to him and he is really cool and was a super kind guy. Now the whole thing about him charging $49 per autograph is dumb, because it is obvious that Roy isn’t the one charging that price, it is the company that is holding the autograph session. How that works, is the Mill Creek Sports place pays Roy to come sit and do an autograph session and then they charge whatever they want per autograph. Roy is just making a smart business move by doing appearances, every major athlete and celebrity gets paid for that stuff, they aren’t the ones charging the people.

I unerstand the whole business angle. These guys are looking to maximize their earning power in everything to do with the game.
But guess what? That’s not why the fans are in it.
Autographs are traditionally a way to show appreciation to the fans.
So, regardless of whether BRoy is selfish or not; And regardless of whether some company set up the signing, it is still lame to charge money for autographs.

Sarcasm?
It is a fine line here, because there is truth laced in the argument. This post definitely succeeded if its purpose was to bait a response. But we cannot know if Brandon is a selfish person without meeting him.
Brandon’s playing style might be described as selfish. But more accurately, he is a great one on one offensive weapon.
Does that limit this team in some ways? Definitely. Against Houston, the limits of our dependence upon Brandon were painfully obvious.
Is that because Brandon is a selfish person or player? Not necessarily. Brandon isn’t calling the plays.
As for the autographs, our captain is just following the rapacious NBA corporate culture. While I think it would be a sign of character if he refused to sell his autographs, agreeing to does not condemn him. He is just doing what his peers do.
by Blazin' on Sep 21, 2009 4:09 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You kidding me???
Selfish? Yeah, Brandon is so selfish that he begged for additional and veteran help. Brandon’s so selfish that statistically he had a great year in terms of assists, especially coming from a very efficient shooting guard. He’s so selfish that he has become the unquestioned leader of this team among his teammates…they love him. He is so stinkin’ selfish that he has gained respect across the NBA from players, coaches and fans. Brandon is so selfish that he just came back ready to play a whole lot lighter. He’s so selfish that he had the nerve to ask for market value. You burger flippers, I propose you tell McDonalds that you’re now working 1/2 the time for free. He’s so selfish that he has sacrificed and worked and led a team that started out with 21 wins to win 54 last year. Selfish players don’t do that. Zach never did that, and he won’t. Since being traded from the Blazers he’s bounced all over, having no more success with other teams than he did while he was here. I want the last 10 minutes of my life back after reading this. I guess I’m just selfish.

The orginal feed back is acurate.
Roy plays with great poise when he goes one on one from the top of the key.
But the truth is the Blazer run that play way to much, and while teams can’t stop it,
they can force Roy to go at it alone, and shut down Roys teammates as Houston did.
Miller was brought on board to help with the play making, and I hope that Portland will run more of a motion offense, without having to run so many isolations plays for Roy.
As other super stars like Jordan, and Kobe learned, and as James is learning now, Roy is learning that the whole team needs to play at a high level for a team to become a champion ship contender.

Is how much of a whiner he is. I get now that he is just all about padding his stats and increasing his shine so that he could finally make it on a video game cover.
