9/21 My birthday junk drawer

So it's my birthday as it is now past 12 am central time. On this date 25 years ago I was born, the red and black already coursing through my veins (mostly the red stuff though). My father nicknamed me Drexler when I was a little boy. I had all the DQ cups, glass and plastic. I still have franz bread cards. I haven't been to Oregon this millennium, but the vision of the Rose Garden flame is still fresh in my mind. My mother is making me a Blazers themed quilt for my birthday.

I have a few passions, but those that burn brightest are for my Wife and Family, Education, the Law and my Country, and the Portland Trail Blazers. When I blow out my candles later today, I will no doubt think about wishing for world peace or some such, but in the end, when I close my eyes and exhale, I'll be wishing for a successful and injury free season for my beloved team.

Happy Birthday

I second your wishes, and wish all the best and brightest to you in the next year.

I wish I could give you a 1984 time capsule, but its kind of fuzzy. I remember realizing that I did not belong in the Navy and that Clyde Drexler could do a little bit of everything real well, and that Kiki Vandeweghe could really shoot, and I remember that Sam Bowie had a really promising rookie year and I thought the combination of those three and kooky Mychal Thompson and some point guard somewhere (was it Fat Lever or Darnell Valentine that year?) could make us champs again. It was a fun year to listen to the games on the radio

Ramsey patrolling the sidelines, Schonely in his prime, and at least a fun team to consider the possibilities. I think I heard every game, all the way through the 5th quarter.

There were only, what, 20 games on TV that year? Half of their road games? And no national TV…. I’m not even sure the TBS contract for Tues and Fri night games had started yet.

by Timmay! on Sep 20, 2009 11:29 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I distinctly remember that about half the 1st round playofff games were not on tv

it was a travesty. I saw all the 2nd round games where we lost to LA, however. grrrrr

There must have been TBS that year, but I can’t remember any Blazer games

who had the USA Network back then?

I don’t think it was available to me at the time.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_on_USA

A few Blazer tidbits on that page, including the first teaming of Eddie Doucette and Steve Jones.

From Basketball Reference, the Blazers’ roster that year:

31 Sam Bowie C-F 7-1 235 March 17, 1961 R University of Kentucky
34 Kenny Carr F 6-7 220 August 15, 1955 7 North Carolina State University
20 Steve Colter G 6-3 165 July 24, 1962 R New Mexico State University
22 Clyde Drexler G-F 6-7 210 June 22, 1962 1 University of Houston
25 Jerome Kersey F 6-7 215 June 26, 1962 R Longwood University
24 Audie Norris C 6-9 230 December 18, 1960 2 Jackson State University
4 Jim Paxson G-F 6-6 200 July 9, 1957 5 University of Dayton
50 Tom Scheffler C 6-11 240 October 27, 1954 R Purdue University
33 Bernard Thompson F-G 6-6 210 August 30, 1962 R California State University, Fresno
43 Mychal Thompson C-F 6-10 226 January 30, 1955 5 University of Minnesota
14 Darnell Valentine G 6-1 183 February 3, 1959 3 University of Kansas
55 Kiki Vandeweghe F 6-8 220 August 1, 1958 4 University of California, Los Angeles

Scheffler and Thompson are older than me! And Kenny Carr was almost as old as me.

The band I was in wrote an instrumental called Steve Colter. I thought Bernard Thompson was going to be a star!

This was the team that I saw battle the Indiana Pacers who had Rik Smits at the time. Kiki was guarding him! I started The Wave in the Memorial Coliseum that night. – Not Elgin

Not admit him :)

Or it’s just the school you didn’t go to. People hate the “other school” just because. Why should Duke and UNC hate each other? There is no real reason.

Oh I know.

The whole “everyone from [opposing school x] is [insert insult here]” is tiring though. It’s good for a laugh, or on a rivarly matchup weekend. But for the most part, most students are aware the people at the other school are actually pretty much like them, unless it gets way to jingoistic at the school, like the aforementioned Duke/UNC situation.

Fans are the same everywhere.

I’ve seen UO fans act terribly in anecdotal situations as well, same for OSU and WSU along with the aforementioned UW stupidness.

Fans are fans. They’re all nuts, I mean the term is short for “fanatic”. All the PNW schools have crazy fans. You just had the bad luck of seeing a bad batch of a certain school’s fans.

Truth is, pretty much all the students across the PNW schools are somewhat similar, so most perceptions are usually just influenced by a few anecdotal moments, which are then extrapolated way too widely to the overall population of a school. I’ve been just as guilty of doing it before.

Ok, off soapbox.

top 10 worst? even if you look back “historically” at OSU’s sports to see that they sucked for 28 years in football, you can still say that they had an elite basketball program (until ’90), and a very good football program (before ’71).

now the football program is at least a top 30 program and the basketball program is trending back up towards the upper half of the Pac-10.

OSU has finished the season ranked quite a few times in recent years… possibly the last three years? i can’t remember.

that’s true. Riley needs to have more consistently good seasons. He’s building the program to be top 25.

Oregon is right at that cusp

Oregon State has a ways to go. I would put OSU alongside a team like BYU or TCU. teams that either have good 15-25 ranked seasons or suck.. it comes and goes in waves

by GreatOden'sRaven on Sep 21, 2009 1:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Outside of the 2002-2007, BYU hasn't

sucked much. Their last losing season by a coach not named Gary Crowton was back in 1973.

well they have been real good

the last 3 years, but with the exception of 2001, they were average at best in a weak conference from 1996-2006

well you have the elite programs

Texas
USC
Florida
Alabama
Ohio State
Notre Dame
Michigan
Oklahoma
maybe Florida State and Miami

that’s 10 right there (counting FSU and Miami). who are the next 15-20 in front of Oregon?

again depends on your

definition of how long your talking

by GreatOden'sRaven on Sep 21, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

this crap is impossible to rank

if we’re talking last 10 years, OSU might sneak in at the #20-25 range (1 BCS Bowl win, consecutive top 25 rankings, one of the higher win totals in the country the last 5 years).

5-10, Oregon is in; any longer and they are out

5 years Boise State is at least a top 15 program; 10 or longer and they aren’t in the discussion

Notre Dame is in regardless due to their BCS Bowl trips when Quinn was their QB.

UDub is in if we all talking all time or 10 years; 5 years or shorter and they are out

"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a woman healthy, wealthy, and wise. That's why you all are wiser than me. It's cloudydays."

but as a program

the media is always all over them, they get consistently high recruiting classes, and even though the product on the field might have stunk; those BCS Bids do count

but we never clarified 5-10
UO is probably top 20 in the last 10 years
OSU isnt in the top 35

OSU in the last 5 years has finished the season ranked in the 20s 3 times.. has won 10 games once. In 10 years it has won 10 games 2 times, and finished in the top 25 4 times.

ok...

ASU and Cal probably had the best years— making the NCAA tournament in 3 of the 4 sports.

USC football, Stanford women’s hoops, UCLA basketball are probably the top 3 pac-10 programs in any of those sports.

SC football is probobly the #2 program in the country right now, after Florida

Stanford women’s hoops is probably around #3-#5 program right now, behind UConn, Tennessee and possibly a couple others. UCLA men’s hoops is a top 5 program for sure, maybe higher. Historically, its still obviously #1.

Through a friend, I know Mickey Rourke a teensie bit

He has complained to us several times over the years how much he wants to get off steroids, but feels like his body is the last thing he hadn’t screwed up… of course, looking all roided out is screwing it up. He’s a nice guy, but kinda messed in the head… if one couldn’t guess.

Not that we’re friends, but if he saw me he’d say “Hey Mortimer what’s up” and then move on.

My friend was a trainer/manager at the Golds Gym in Venice, so lots of stars went to him with complaints about steroids and other drug stuff… not realizing he’s super duper ultra clean.

Point is, a lot of that movie can even be seen as about Rourke himself; trying to recapture past glory, drug abuse, steroid abuse, etc. It is a depressing movie.

The most depressing sport isn’t wrestling though, it’s body building. Good lord those guys bum me out. Least healthiest people in the world.

I’m no expert, but he seems to have gotten cheek implants before they were any good. Now they are made of silicone and a pretty solid porous material that attaches well to the bone and doesn’t cause much irritation. He probably just got silicone injected, or material has leaked causing a need for more operations. Add some botox and other filler material injections, and the face starts looking pretty ridiculous.

I got to know a lot of body builders, the dudes on the covers of those stupid magazines, and what they go through for all of that is literally INSANE. It is beyond pointless.

Thousands a month in money they don’t really make in HGH and steroids, no drinking water for a few days before a show to get your skin paper thin, lots of little things that are just disgusting to get ready for a show.

They are eternally broke, feeling not good enough but compensating with extreme cockiness, and working out.

There was a “documentary” on MTV True Life (?) about people striving for their idea of the perfect body. One guy wanted to be a wrestler and constantly needed to watch his weight to not fall out of his class, a female Harvard student wanted to get into the aerobic bodybuilding scene, another one wanted to be a beauty pageant queen, a guy who wanted to get into body building workout videos, another one who wanted to become a strong man, and one who wondered if his thighs were too small and keeping him from being successful so he wanted implants there which was about the dumbest thing I have seen in a long time

That was probably what I meant. Yeah, he couldn’t walk for a while and was so happy when his lower legs got a bit bigger. I think it also inspired an episode of Entourage where Drama checks out the legs of other men, including Lamar Odom.

No matter how often I read the onion, I always miss good stuff.

I’m not sure which part I liked more:

On numerous occasions, you have expressed the conviction that your area’s sports team will be victorious. I must admit that every time I hear you make this proclamation, I react with both laughter and disbelief. “Ha!” I say to myself with laughter. “What?!” I say to myself in disbelief. How could you believe that your sports team could beat my sports team? It is clear that yours is inferior in every way.

Or…

If you need another reason why the sporting franchise representing my area is superior, look no further than the supporters for the two sides. Not only are the supporters of the team from my region more spirited, but they are also more intelligent and of finer breeding than you and the rest of your ilk. In addition, the female supporters of the team from my area possess more attractive countenances and figures than yours. Some of the women from my side that I have observed could make a living by posing for pictures for major men’s magazines.

Either way, that’s high comedy. Thanks for the link.

And I was the only member of my family standing in opposition to LAs title run last year. I even made a FB account just for the purposes of talking trash to them. Lot of good that did me.

And Yes. Although I am serious about how much I appreciate my mom’s influence on my life, I was also making a joke about genetics in the header of this comment.

Are shows around cooking still popular in the US outside of special channels?

I think I could watch about 25 different ones if I wanted to here in several countries. And I only care for 1 or 2. Sometimes.

Food Network (which is on basic cable in the US) runs cooking shows on weekend mornings

They focus on competition shows and stuff like Good Eats in the evenings since it apparently brings in higher ratings. But the cooking shows are still around.

Older, but this might be the funniest Canzano story/interview I've ever read

http://thebiglead.com/?p=5319

Feat. Patterson vs. Z-Bo, Ha vs. Sinanovic, and of course Sheed vs. Canzano:

At that point, his teammates are all looking to see how I react, and in no way am I going to back down. I’m looking at Rasheed, and thinking if he takes a swing I’m going to try and stuff him into the locker behind him if only because journalists everywhere need me to man up in that situation. Either that, or I’m going to get knocked out and blow my deadline.

regarding all the talk about the refs and whatnot,

another thing that annoys me about NBA officals: rejecting accountability.

After the league publicly acknowledged the error, nearly all the officials responded the next night by wearing their jerseys inside-out with Henderson’s No. 62 on the back.

From an ESPN article. Officials protesting because the league acknowledges one of them made a mistake is ridiculous. Refs being willing to accept blame for blown calls in public would go a long way towards improving the quality of officiating, in my opinion.

Roy’s unwillingness to pass at the beginning of games have cost us too many times. Why do you think Travis Outlaw shoots the ball every time he touches it? Because he knows if he gives it up to Brandon, the ball will not come back to him.

I like how people are talking themselves into agreeing with your post.

 uh. okaaaaay…

actually, I kind of hear what your saying, but comparing Roy’s leadership to that of Z-Bo immediately kills any point that you were trying to make. Roy may be selfish on the court, but that selfishness on the court usually results with a win. Z-Bo’s had the opposite effect. As for off the court, he has donated plenty of money to charities, scholarships, public parks, etc. And he is engaged to be married as far as I know.

Jumbotron Blazer Questions

I have a friend who works at the Rose Garden and he tells me that they are preparing for Media Day. They are gathering questions campus wide to ask the players. I’m assuming these are the ones that get asked on the jumbotron during games and show up in the programs. Stuff like ‘what’s your favorite food?’ and ‘what would you be doing if you weren’t in the NBA?’

So what would you ask?

Nelly Furtado has decided that she doesn't want to be too commercial

Her new album is entirely in Spanish, and much slower than “Loose”. Her record company wanted to make a similar record immediately, but she went on a one year break raising her daughter, doing pottery, cooking, marrying. The new one sounds much more like the first (I’m like a bird) and second one, middle-fast and melodic.

There is a song called “Feliz cumpleaños” like our Spanish friends said above, about her 30s birthday. That’s mainly why I mention it now in this birthday post. There is also a song named Suficiente Tiempo where she brings her daughter (6) to pre-school. That reminds me of Sophia.

The people that take it seriously are likely not the types to read the comments. They are way to fired up about it.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

That’s true, but he didn’t need to call out the people who took it seriously and make the whole post sound like a complete farce. He could have been more sarcastic in his point, and it would have worked better.

those just aren't going to get old.

Kanye might have been out of line, but it might be the best thing he’s done since Gold Digger. (I don’t listen to much Kanye but that’s my favorite song of his).

ugh that song is horrible

compared to the rest of his music

I didnt think 808's was good

but Gold Digger is about as low as Kanye could get. That song is soulja boy level. College Dropout, Late Registration (minus Gold Digger), and Graduation were all great albums.

All three albums are on different teirs

I think College Dropout was one of the best hip hop albums ever
Late Registration was really good
Graduation was good but not as good as the first two

I dont think Kanye fits the pop description
Pop music is a music genre that developed from the mid-1950s as a softer alternative to rock ‘n’ roll and later to rock music. It has a focus on commercial recording, often orientated towards a youth market, usually through the medium of relatively short and simple love songs.

this sounds exactly like Kanye West

commercial music: modern commercial music, usually tuneful, up-tempo and repetitive, that is aimed at the general public and the youth market in particular

Love.
