Blazers make big mistake and bring back Lucas!!!!
I guess were never gonna get Greg a real big mans coach! Lets see, Bynum has Kareem, Howard has Ewing and Oden has Maurice Lucas?!?!?!?! WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!! wake up KP!! This will go down as a huge mistake and could cost the Blazers at a shot at a championship. No wonder Oden fouls so much look who he is being coached by. Sorry but you just can't play that old school type of ball anymore.

wow
I think its perfectly legitimate to suggest the Blazers should bring in a coach with a more proven track record of developing big men, but given that Lucas wasn’t around the team much last year because of his illness, its a little ridiculous to suggest its his fault Oden fouls so much.

not to mention that Lucas was an amazing big man
so i’m not sure why he’s less than Ewing. No argument on Karem.
I’d also argue that success in one area does not mean success in others. Just ask Jordan.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

that's why i say "bring in a coach with a more proven track record of developing big men"
as opposed to “bring in a coach who had a better career as an NBA big man.”
like
Clifford Ray
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
and i could go for that argument
I’d still want to know who they were and why they were better though.

The argument on Kareem is that besides Bynum who hasn't really amounted to much yet but gets a ton of hype he also coached big man standouts Chris Mihm, Kwame Brown and Michael Olowokandi
So his track record is, um, murky?

Exactly
Ever had a professor that was well-respected and often published, but a lousy teacher?
Dwight Howard is a physical freak, and doesn’t play anything like Ewing did. As stated above, Kareem hasn’t proved anything as far as coaching goes. If anything, we could assume that Mo Lucas is a much better big-man coach than Kareem, because Oden is already better than Bynum with less than half the experience.
They showed him respect and the only reason he had to leave is due to his bout with cancer. Also its radiculous to banter about this without a suggestion of who should replace him. If Lucas doesnt fit the model who does as the perfect available coach?

My point exactly. Also just because someone is a hall of fame player does not mean they have what it takes to teach or coach.

Report from the year 2016
AP – Unfortunately it looks like the Blazers’ championship window will close this season after losing in the first round to Minnesota, whose dual point guard strategy has paid off in a big way.
Blazer fans can only ask themselves what might have been had they not hired Maurice Lucas back in 2009. “Man, if it wasn’t for that guy, we would have one three championships…easy” said a disheartened Greg Oden who averaged a paltry 8 points per game before tearing both of his ACLs in a freak injury during the fifth game.

Mo Lucas punched two of the biggest Bad Arses in the history of the league, and knocked one of them out! Gilmore got dropped like a 10lb bag of spuds, and Dawkins will take the fact that he never got to swing back at Luke to the grave with him. All Kareem did was break his hand on Kent Benson’s face in the one fight he was in! And as far as Ewing goes. If we want a coach to show the players around the strip clubs, we’ll just bring Z-Bo or Miles back!
Mo Lucas is the real deal tough guy.

Mo Lucas is not even in my top 3 of big men coaches
Blazers fans always overrate former players. I however am objective because I hate old people. My top three replacements for Mo Lucas in order are:
1. Shawn Bradly – The dude is 7’ 6" tall and you can’t teach height and he was in Space Jam
2. Manute Bol – Bol is the tallest man in NBA history and had an 8’ 6" wingspan, if he could teach that to Oden, Oden would be unstoppable
3. Gheorghe Muresan – He had the second largest wingspan in NBA history and was in a movie with Billy Crystal – ’Nuff said!

But tall people often have tall kids, so it looks like height can be contagious.
If you stick Oden in the same room for long enough with those guys, it stand to reason he’d catch their tallness like he was their child.

Not Psyched
Not fair to Oden to to have a teacher who is struggling with his health. I wish Lucas the best, but seems to me his health issues can’t be helping Oden’s psyche.

Bill Bayno is back on the team
He is working with Oden as well. He’s a proven big man development coach.
I’d rather have a TEACHER over a former player who may or may not know why he was good, and how to teach others how to be good as well. There aren’t really any star former big men who are known to be good coaches for other bigs. Guys like Bayno ARE known for getting the best out of bigs, because they have studied and analysed the ‘WHY’ of how bigs are successful.
Mo is good as a mentor, for attitude on the court and in life. It’s silly to “blame” him for anything, as if he’s telling Oden to hip check PGs on pick and rolls and to not be in good shape.
Mortimer
by Mortimer on Sep 2, 2009 2:36 PM PDT reply actions 1 recs
Correct
Oden doesn’t need a big man to teach him, Bill Bayno and Mo Lucas can teach. Oden just needs some big man to bang and practice what Bayno and Lucas tell/teach him. That’s the only benefit to having a big man coach on the team.
And in that regard I don’t think you can reasonably hire Mo Lucas back for that, which I don’t think they did. You hire on some 15th player or some assistant, who is a big man so G.O. can take his frustration out on and practice on, that’s all there is to it.
I'm in the business of bringing out the best in people.

Couple thoughts
First) How is it you’re measuring his ability? Joel has flourished with Mo coaching him. Greg was out so he couldn’t coach him his first year and Mo was out last year.
2) Mo is still under contract with the Blazers so they’re going to pay him until the end of that contract whether he’s coaching, ill or sitting at home watching someone else coach.
3) Don’t believe there is any reason if the Blazers management didn’t think Mo was getting everything he could out of those guys they couldn’t bring in another coach.

Blazers make a big mistake and hiring Kevin Pritchard
Everyone knows that in order to be a great coach, you have to be an all-time great at your position. The same applies for general managers. If you ever hope to build a dynasty, you have to have a player that played on a dynasty. One day Portland will realize that they lost out on a chance at a dynasty because they signed a player who was never a part of a dominant NBA team in Kevin Pritchard, when they should have gone after a GM who won a few championships in his day, like Michael Jordan, Larry Bird or Isiah Thomas. All of those players were much better players than Kevin Pritchard so they will obviously all be better GM’s than Pritchard also.
When will this team stop focusing on how good an individual is at his job and start looking at the more important thing: his career stats as a player.
Tony Bennett reports that Minnesota and Portland are swapping draft picks -- Roy to Portland, Foye to Minnesota. That's it? That's the trade? None of the ESPN guys seem remotely fazed. I knew Kevin McHale couldn't just pick the best guy in the draft without somehow screwing it up. I would have bet my Ndudi Ebi rookie cards on it.

Odenisgod has a legitimate concern. Bill Walton anyone?
In my opinion he overstated that concern but I have to admit that I have wondered before if Lucas is a good choice as a big man coach for Oden. Luke was a power forward who played with a certain style. Of course we are assuming that Luke can only teach the same style he played. Not necessarily the case. However, going on that premise, what style of play is best suited to Greg and therefore who would be a good teacher of that style?
I am not sure if Greg would wind up in a padded cubicle somewhere, but would someone like Bill Walton be a good teacher of the post up game? He has at least one son that seems to have learned how to play the game under his tutelage. Granted Luke is not a center, but still, I am sure he gives a lot of credit to his dad.
Wouldn’t it be fitting to bring Walton back to the organization as a coach to pick up another ring? Or three?
I would love to Walton around
But I’m not sure his back would allow him to hang in the post with Greg.

Robert Parish Please ...
Top student of the best big man coach in the NBA (Clifford Ray) and he coaches in Ray’s big man camps during the summer.
Brilliant footwork + positioning defensively both on and off the ball … which allowed him to play into his 40s.
Parish is the guy I’d love to see coaching Greg Oden.
Lucas and Bayno are fine
Oden’s problems arose out of his inability to move laterally as a result of his injury. This created instability when he tried to plant his feet and set up to block. The outcome was fouls, fouls, fouls. This season he should show considerable improvement because the effect of the injury and subsequent surgery should be minimal.
In the USA mini-camp Oden showed some of his potential by covering the middle to an extent very few attempts were made to go inside. You will not see many blocks by him if they don’t try the middle. This will provide a more stable defensive posture by the entire team.
Mo and Bill will be able to help Greg with his footwork and shot selection. I don’t see adding Zo would achieve any better results. Be patient with Oden and he will show you what we had originally expected from him.
International Rules?
Were they using international rules at the USA mini-camp? If so, that could explain in part why Oden plugged up the middle, not because he could move better laterally, but because he could camp out in the middle of the lane.

The funny thing is....
I actually agree with the OP of this post. I am not as crazily dedicated to the fire MO thinking. But I do worry about Mo’s health and whether he is ready to take on an nba season. That said, Lucas will not make or break Oden’s career, I wouldn’t mind a different big man coach, simply because I want one that is healthy enough to work on a day in, day out basis. But if KP and the coaching staff trusts Mo, so do I. I just hope he is healthy enough to tackle the task. Mo’s health should be far more important than Oden’s development…
Right or not
You just don’t go fire a guy, cuz of bad health. Its poor form (good luck getting others to want to sign on. I could be done, but it would be expensive. Spare the Paul Allen $ bags talk, he’s looking for profitibility for the first time). Mo would have to have a long track record of being an outright bad coach to justify firing.
I get the paper, so I don't care!
I didn't mean to come across as I want Mo fired....
I don’t. It just wouldn’t hurt to have a guy that isn’t struggling with serious health issues to mentor Oden. That is all I was trying to say. I wish Mo the best, I want him to be healthy enough to be Oden’s mentor. I have no problems with him other than obvious health concerns. That’s it.
Also, health is always a concern to the employer, especially when it comes to professional sports. Although, I am stretching it a bit here since he is a coach and not a player. I just want Mo to be healthy, and Greg to have a steady mentor. I am not sure that Mo can fulfill either obligation at this point, but I wish him the best….
My brother has been dealing with bladder cancer for the last 5 years.
He’s had surgery so many times I’ve lost count but he really hasn’t missed much work. He needs the medical insurance.

Thanks for the response...
and I hope your brother wins the battle. He sounds like a strong person. I wouldn’t blame him for a second if he missed all five years of work. However, Mo has missed basically an entire year, and I hope that doesn’t continue for his own sake. Again, the best possible scenario is that Mo is healthy enough to mentor Oden, that is what I want. But if he isn’t, I would hope the Blazers brass finds someone that is. Life is precious, nobody would blame Mo if his health got in the way of his coaching ability, and in the last year, I tend to believe that it has done exactly that. Its obviously not his fault, and nobody with any common sense would say it was…

He is much improved
He stopped trying to block every inside shot and stuck to guarding his man and getting in position for the boards. His shot blocking used to be exciting, but against a decent team, they either drove and dished to his man or they did get the shot off and his man grabbed the offensive rebound.
He’s still a liability on one end, but he’s one of the best in the league at the other.
Someone got it into his head that he needed to make a radical shift in how he played, and it has made a huge difference.

Are you kidding me? The original post and most all these comments need to be deleted into oblivion!
First of all as a Blazer fan, Maurice Lucas has EARNED the right to never be associated with the words “mistake”. In my book Maurice Lucas is NEVER a mistake. He was a ground breaking, definition changing PF of his time and key element in our championship run. Lucas WAS a superstar of his time.
Any poster that dares call Lucas a “Joke” doesn’t know Lucas or Blazer history. A ban for life is in order. Or the original poster needs to go call Lucas a “Joke” to his face. Otherwise, shut up.
As to the tangible debate as to his value as a coach for Oden? I honestly thought the best period of advancement for Oden came when Lucas was around. I think Lucas was helping Oden considerably. Oden struggled in Lucas’s absence.
As far as experience, attitude, confidence and what it takes to grind out a season in the N.B.A. I can think of no better coach for Oden. More than some of the basic’s, I think Oden needs direction in perspective, a person like Maurice Lucas should be invaluable in that area. An Oden with a streak of Lucas in him, would be feared throughout the league.
Get as many, or whomever you want to additionally coach Oden if you wish. BUT dare not call Lucas a joke or a mistake, because that would be a mistake and a joke.

Well, Tree Rollins isn't available.
He’s busy helping Marc Gasol, Hasheem Thabeet and fantasy all-star Hamed Haddadi.
So there you go.
Patty Mills - PG of the future. Book it.
Just to pile on...
As almost any Blazer fan can (and several have already) point out, Luke missed vast portions of Greg’s belated rookie year, and can hardly be held accountable for Greg’s growing pains.
On a semi-related note, I learned one of the most fundamental basketball lessons of my life from watching Luke (my favorite player from the ’77 team; I thought Walton was crazy and hence a bit frightening-I was eight at the time). I saw a picture of him boxing out Moses Malone (no small matter, that) and the proverbial lightbulb went off in my head. Long before I played truly organized basketball, I knew that when the shot went up, my job was to get my opponent on my backside and keep him there.
I truly think Greg is in more than capable hands in regards to his coaches.
I wish Channing Frye had the same electrician...

A: A male dog is called a DOG. A female dog is a BITCH. Dogs in the plural of undetermined gender are DOGS.
Thank you for playing.
