That Drawer where you put unwanted things and they just sit there 9/19

Television has been crap lately. Without my beloved Blazers on I haven't really had much to watch. So help me out.

What's your favorite show, especially one that isn't absurdly popular. Yes I have seen the Office.

I vote for Always Sunny in Philadelphia (although how you aren't already watching it amazes me people) and my favorite show that doesnt get NEARLY enough respect..

Burn Notice!

Burnnotice_medium

So fill me in. What SHOULD I be watching.. since I have time to kill in spades.

Attila. AWESOME name

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

my dad worked at tektronix back in the 80's

he used to bring home this compaq that was state of the art. About the size of a suitcase, with a detachable keyboard and a 5" green screen. I think it ran lotus or something. I would play this star trek game, the graphics were about as good as hangman on a commodore pet, running off of cassette tape. I remember he took me to work one day, and showed me the hard drives. They were all in a big room, surrounded by guys in short-sleeved dress shirts and clip-on ties. The things were the size of refrigerators. Ah memories

Lets see

If you don’t mind DvDs try…

Curb Your Enthusiasm seasons 1-6 (season 7 coming up)
The Wire complete series
Sons of Anarchy season 1 (season 2 just started playing)

no need to suggest Sunny for you, and Dexter has been mentioned.

Eureka is decent entertainment value if you don’t mind cable tv budget sci-fi special effects. It’s nothing emmy worthy but I watch it when there’s really nothing else.

by Bskey on Sep 18, 2009 11:47 PM PDT reply actions

I watched the wire when it was on HBO

so I saw that one thru.. and i love Curb..
I saw one episode of SOA and didnt really get into it, but I might give it another shot.. so good call…

I have always wanted to watch Eureka.. instead i watched Warehouse 13.. good fluff i suppose

I might suggest Fringe for you

I haven’t gotten too into paranormal hunting agents since x-files, but from the couple episodes I’ve seen it was a decent show. I might find the episodes somewhere so I can watch it.

by idoltime on Sep 19, 2009 12:24 AM PDT up reply actions

It's helped me focus

If I’m working on stuff, I don’t go “ooh, time for Daily Show”… I don’t even consider it.

I know its being recorded and I’ll watch it when I wanna, and I stay focused on what I be doing.

It is amazing.

Also, I had to miss a lot of Blazer games last season, and I would watch them as soon as I could on my DVR. It made it so I could still enjoy them like it was live, since I didn’t need to go online to watch a rerun of it, which would tell me the score.

by Mortimer on Sep 19, 2009 12:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, the flexibility and the way it manages recordings is great.

I also love that I can also choose to watch the game “semi-live” where I take a bit of extra time to make a sammish or whatever.. and then i can fast forward through commercials and even free throw shooting when that gets boring. Plus, I can catch up with real time towards the end if I want to reengage a game day thread or something when it all counts.

"...the primary focus of all obstacles is to induce labor, so progression can be born." - LiL C

by idoltime on Sep 19, 2009 12:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm OCD about Blazer games

I can’t miss a second, except for commercials. But I can’t miss a millisecond otherwise. If I do the “’30 seconds ahead” thing and end up 1 second into the game on a return from a commercial, and it’s just a shot of the crowd and no one is talking and nothing happening, I still gotta rewind it a little so I don’t miss a thing.

It is part of cherishing each game, because they go so fast.

And it helps us win, because we won 54 wins and it was ALL. ME.

I also gotta have some sort of beverage when watching or we will run out of energy in the game!!11

by Mortimer on Sep 19, 2009 12:42 AM PDT up reply actions

It got to the point where I didn't really mind recording it and watching it late at night

No distractions, no wife waiting for it to be over, I could pause and potty when I wanted, easy to not miss a second since I don’t like to rewind when the game is live-live…

Also, whenever I did watch a game live and was in the gameday thread, we did bad. So those became unlucky for me. I’d leave and we’d come roaring back… like in that Hornets game.

Has the complete opposite relationship with his team. He feels if he watches it, then they lose. It is hilarious to hear him talk about each game the next morning, cuz he’ll have the TV on in one room, and he’ll pretend to walk by it, and he’ll sneak a peek at the score, and then run, pretending he did not look.

I liked Game 2 where Roy came out and he would not let Portland lose

the win @ Orlando ended up being one of the most impressive wins of the year

J Bay’s performance against New Jersey (and Batum’s where he hit that 3 to seal the game) were also two of my favorites.

Boston win was pretty good too, mainly because it was my first Blazer game live in like 10 years.

I’d put the @Cleveland loss up there too, because we were down LMA and fought into OT against (what was then) the best team of the league and they had only lost at home once Roy was very clutch at the end of that game as well.

Phoenix where B Roy went off for 50+ is probably my favorite though. That or the 2nd Lakers game where Roy dominated Kobe in crunch time.

by cloudydays on Sep 19, 2009 12:43 AM PDT up reply actions

For some reason… Game 5 is meaningful.

It was after the late season surge… the embarrassment of Game 1 at home… the two incredible losses in Houston. Portland was losing close games that came down to only a few plays.

And then… Brandon Roy happened. LaMarcus Aldridge happened. Rudy Fernandez happened. The crowd believed the entire game. Despite the long odds to win the series, it was as if everyone watching and everyone in the game somehow knew. Knew that it was a Blazer win. Knew that the season wasn’t about to end that night. Brandon, LaMarcus, Rudy, Joel, Steve… for a night, they solved the Houston puzzle. It was redemption.

There was something magical about that fourth quarter, going to Roy every time down the floor, the only player conistently creating offense for Portland… and he came through nearly every possession. I like the Andre signing, but I’ll go back every once in a while and watch a game from the Houston series, the year that Brandon did it all by myself.

There was a special feeling in that game. So much optimism and belief in such a bad circumstance.

Big scandal in the Formula 1 about a team (Renault) that ordered their second driver to crash his car, so there would be a 'caution' yellow flag phase or maybe the safety car out where you aren't allowed to overtake so their #1 driver would win the race
  • Team orders are generally not allowed in Formula 1, though in reality they happen regularly since the drivers implicitly know who is #1 and who is #2 and what they need to do (e.g. priority refueling for the #1 when there is such a situation, the #2 blocking free for the #1, etc.)
  • And while of course a pro driver can make a controlled crash, there is still risk involved for himself, other drivers through flying debris or punched tires when driving over carbon fibre, spectators, etc.

The owners/GMs of the team admitted to ordering it. As if F1 didn’t have enough scandals already last season. A Times writer called it “the worst act of cheating in the history of sport”. Article and lots of additional links.

Yes, the juicy detail here is that the young driver admitted he had to do it under immense pressure later, and then the sponsoring company asked/investigated its racing division and fired the heads. One of them Flavio Briatore, eccentric billionaire founder of Benetton and one of the main figures in making F1 popular again in the last two decades. There is no real comparison to basketball, maybe imagine Mark Cuban or Paul Allen ordering one of his lesser players to simulate an injury, or kick the main star’s defender against the knee.

I think the juicier detail is that the young driver, feeling the pressure of living up to his pop was an abject failure and was canned. After being canned he lashed out at his employer in the media. Like I said, I doubt that this is the first time such a thing was done, but definitely the first time a spoiled brat ratted out the boss. </devils advocate>

actually...

You should try… Some jokes rely on older episodes… Plus season 1 and 2 are extremely hilarious. If you are messing with me and you watch a lot of sunny… GOOD FOR YOU! Its hilarious! And I am glad we could agree. If not, try starting at season 1 and working your way through. hulu.com has some earlier episodes…

I have never watched it

I watched the earliest one I could on Hulu last night and it was real funny.

I have been told a million times I would love it, and it always sounded funny, but I never got around to DVRing it.

I will watch ‘em on Hulu, unless you know a place that has all of season 1… since Hulu doesn’t, I don’t think.

But that series has had some of the best episodes bar none on TV. There was an intense episode with Sayid early on, and the "Hugo finds the DARMA van" was priceless.

Lost never did it for me, too. Don't know why. Maybe I don't like the mix between realistic and unrealistic.

Odd fact of the day: Nobody I know who is not Anglo-American ever cared for the Sopranos. I would say many countries in Europe don’t know that show existed. Same with a number of US shows. I really like The Wire, but it only runs on Pay TV cable. Whereas The Shield at least was on cable free TV. Also shows like Amazing Race and Survivor are none-events.

Well, those guys aren't exactly scientists either

Adam doesn’t have a college degree, and Jamie majored in linguistics or something like that. Learning by doing a ton of different jobs in special effects for theater and movie industry. Tory and Grant (electrical engineering) have some science background and are former employees of ILM. Kari is also self-trained and rather an artist than a scientist.

And we drafted McBob and Derrick Byars over Marc Gasol. Grrrr.

Can’t claim I’m a great scout, but I knew he would be good five years ago after the world championships in Japan and was swearing at my PC when the Lakers drafted him. Every pro scout worth his salt should have known that. I guess they even did, only the US scouts wanted their guy too after the Blazers had gone with Rudy and Petteri.

I seriously would trade Joel + something for Marc. We would have two great young centers forever.

Bah

Gasol won’t be happy knowing that he’d only be the second option behind Oden. And fans would never be happy if Oden had to split even more minutes.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

At least we knew one of them would pan out. Admittedly it’s like the Nic/Travis/Martell situation, but you can never have too many assets. And passing up on him twice (three times if you count Petteri) was a clear mistake.

I don't understand fanboys and fangirls

Someone mentioned trading Martell in the athletic post and I know they already hate Outlaw and want him traded. It seems like they want 5 starters and then the rest of the roster filled with the crappiest players in the league that would never compete for playing time with their favorite player.

True Story

The weekend we moved to Phoenix, I wanted to get a feel for the neighborhood, so we went for a drive. We lived near the northern base of South Mountain, so we figured we’d just drive around the mountain to see what was there. We went around the west side, through Laveen, and into the Gila Indian reservation. We went down a dirt road, and even though the signs said that the road ended, we wanted to know what was there. Well, the road definitely ended, and suddenly I was driving 10 mph, weaving between 15 foot cactuses out in the middle of reservation land. I wasn’t totally sure I could make it back if I turned around, so I just kept going east. After about 8 miles, I could see houses on the horizon, so I kept weaving through the cactuses. There had never been anything built on this land, so I was pretty scared of what I might find out there. Eventually we rolled into a brand new sub-division on the west side of Ahwatukee, but since I was on the reservation side of the sub-division, I couldn’t access the road. Eventually I just had to gun it and jump the lowest barrier I could find, drive over the sidewalk, and onto the brand new roads. We decided to take the I-10 home rather than cactus weave our way back.

Here’s an approximate aerial view of the area

If you know a Knicks fan or GM Walsh, maybe tell them that ritual suicide is not a good option
For a few die-hards, it was a chance to deliver a message to James, who can become a free agent next summer. The Cavaliers offered James a contract extension this summer, but the 24-year-old has not yet signed it, saying he wants to keep his options open for the future, a stance that has some Cleveland fans worried he’ll go to another team.

“Don’t leave us, man,” one fan said as James scrawled his name.

“I ain’t leaving,” James said, smiling.

Nine hundred and first!

Really.

I’m not making this up.

The counsels of impatience and hatred can always be supported by the crudest and cheapest symbols. For the counsels of moderation, the reasons are often intricate, rather than emotional, and difficult to explain. And so the chauvinists of all times and places go their appointed way: plucking the easy fruits, reaping the little triumphs of the day at the expense of someone else tomorrow, deluging in noise and filth anyone who gets in their way, dancing their reckless dance on the prospects for human progress, drawing the shadow of a great doubt over the validity of democratic institutions. And until peoples learn to spot the fanning of mass emotions and the sowing of bitterness, suspicion, and intolerance as crimes in themselves - as perhaps the greatest disservice that can be done to the cause of popular government - this sort of thing will continue to occur.

"After further review"

After watching football all day, I realized that this phrase is used incorrectly. It should be “after review” or if you really like the word “further”, it should be “after further views” …….not “after further review” . I know I am being nit picky, but it implies multiple reviews. If the ref went over to the hood (or booth or whatever) and then came back and announced “After review we still don’t know what happened….we are gonna look some more, thanks for your patience” …..then walks back to the hood….then comes back and announces “After further review….the play stands” …..then that would be correct

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
