That Drawer where you put unwanted things and they just sit there 9/19

Television has been crap lately. Without my beloved Blazers on I haven't really had much to watch. So help me out.

What's your favorite show, especially one that isn't absurdly popular. Yes I have seen the Office.

I vote for Always Sunny in Philadelphia (although how you aren't already watching it amazes me people) and my favorite show that doesnt get NEARLY enough respect..

Burn Notice!

Burnnotice_medium

So fill me in. What SHOULD I be watching.. since I have time to kill in spades.

I love it

Attila. AWESOME name

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

my dad worked at tektronix back in the 80's

he used to bring home this compaq that was state of the art. About the size of a suitcase, with a detachable keyboard and a 5" green screen. I think it ran lotus or something. I would play this star trek game, the graphics were about as good as hangman on a commodore pet, running off of cassette tape. I remember he took me to work one day, and showed me the hard drives. They were all in a big room, surrounded by guys in short-sleeved dress shirts and clip-on ties. The things were the size of refrigerators. Ah memories

Lets see

If you don’t mind DvDs try…

Curb Your Enthusiasm seasons 1-6 (season 7 coming up)
The Wire complete series
Sons of Anarchy season 1 (season 2 just started playing)

no need to suggest Sunny for you, and Dexter has been mentioned.

Eureka is decent entertainment value if you don’t mind cable tv budget sci-fi special effects. It’s nothing emmy worthy but I watch it when there’s really nothing else.

by Bskey on Sep 18, 2009 11:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I watched the wire when it was on HBO

so I saw that one thru.. and i love Curb..
I saw one episode of SOA and didnt really get into it, but I might give it another shot.. so good call…

I have always wanted to watch Eureka.. instead i watched Warehouse 13.. good fluff i suppose

I might suggest Fringe for you

I haven’t gotten too into paranormal hunting agents since x-files, but from the couple episodes I’ve seen it was a decent show. I might find the episodes somewhere so I can watch it.

My girlfriend is from england, and does not like seinfeld

which is unfortunate because it is still one of my all time favorite shows. But now I have to sneak around to watch it like it’s porn or something, because if I try to watch it with her she goes catatonic, which is fun sometimes as I imagine her to be a malfunctioning cyborg, but with no one else around that gets old pretty fast….

although pretty similar to America she still has trouble with a lot of American humor. Whenever I try to show her something funny I look for her reaction at the funny part and shes usually still waiting for it not realizing that was it.

She doesn’t like Seinfeld either, but she at least enjoys Curb a bit.

It's helped me focus

If I’m working on stuff, I don’t go “ooh, time for Daily Show”… I don’t even consider it.

I know its being recorded and I’ll watch it when I wanna, and I stay focused on what I be doing.

It is amazing.

Also, I had to miss a lot of Blazer games last season, and I would watch them as soon as I could on my DVR. It made it so I could still enjoy them like it was live, since I didn’t need to go online to watch a rerun of it, which would tell me the score.

by Mortimer on Sep 19, 2009 12:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, the flexibility and the way it manages recordings is great.

I also love that I can also choose to watch the game “semi-live” where I take a bit of extra time to make a sammish or whatever.. and then i can fast forward through commercials and even free throw shooting when that gets boring. Plus, I can catch up with real time towards the end if I want to reengage a game day thread or something when it all counts.

by idoltime on Sep 19, 2009 12:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm OCD about Blazer games

I can’t miss a second, except for commercials. But I can’t miss a millisecond otherwise. If I do the “’30 seconds ahead” thing and end up 1 second into the game on a return from a commercial, and it’s just a shot of the crowd and no one is talking and nothing happening, I still gotta rewind it a little so I don’t miss a thing.

It is part of cherishing each game, because they go so fast.

And it helps us win, because we won 54 wins and it was ALL. ME.

I also gotta have some sort of beverage when watching or we will run out of energy in the game!!11

by Mortimer on Sep 19, 2009 12:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It got to the point where I didn't really mind recording it and watching it late at night

No distractions, no wife waiting for it to be over, I could pause and potty when I wanted, easy to not miss a second since I don’t like to rewind when the game is live-live…

Also, whenever I did watch a game live and was in the gameday thread, we did bad. So those became unlucky for me. I’d leave and we’d come roaring back… like in that Hornets game.

My boss's boss

Has the complete opposite relationship with his team. He feels if he watches it, then they lose. It is hilarious to hear him talk about each game the next morning, cuz he’ll have the TV on in one room, and he’ll pretend to walk by it, and he’ll sneak a peek at the score, and then run, pretending he did not look.

I finally watched my first episode of Sunny in Philadelphia

I always heard it was great and right up my alley-hole, but just never watched it.

I think it was an episode from the first season, it was on Hulu. One of the guys joins a plan to accuse their old PE coach of molesting them to get some money out of it, and another of the friends is jealous that the PE coach didn’t molest him. That one.

I will try to watch ’em all, it was funny.

I liked Game 2 where Roy came out and he would not let Portland lose

the win @ Orlando ended up being one of the most impressive wins of the year

J Bay’s performance against New Jersey (and Batum’s where he hit that 3 to seal the game) were also two of my favorites.

Boston win was pretty good too, mainly because it was my first Blazer game live in like 10 years.

I’d put the @Cleveland loss up there too, because we were down LMA and fought into OT against (what was then) the best team of the league and they had only lost at home once Roy was very clutch at the end of that game as well.

Phoenix where B Roy went off for 50+ is probably my favorite though. That or the 2nd Lakers game where Roy dominated Kobe in crunch time.

For some reason… Game 5 is meaningful.

It was after the late season surge… the embarrassment of Game 1 at home… the two incredible losses in Houston. Portland was losing close games that came down to only a few plays.

And then… Brandon Roy happened. LaMarcus Aldridge happened. Rudy Fernandez happened. The crowd believed the entire game. Despite the long odds to win the series, it was as if everyone watching and everyone in the game somehow knew. Knew that it was a Blazer win. Knew that the season wasn’t about to end that night. Brandon, LaMarcus, Rudy, Joel, Steve… for a night, they solved the Houston puzzle. It was redemption.

There was something magical about that fourth quarter, going to Roy every time down the floor, the only player conistently creating offense for Portland… and he came through nearly every possession. I like the Andre signing, but I’ll go back every once in a while and watch a game from the Houston series, the year that Brandon did it all by myself.

There was a special feeling in that game. So much optimism and belief in such a bad circumstance.

Big scandal in the Formula 1 about a team (Renault) that ordered their second driver to crash his car, so there would be a 'caution' yellow flag phase or maybe the safety car out where you aren't allowed to overtake so their #1 driver would win the race
  • Team orders are generally not allowed in Formula 1, though in reality they happen regularly since the drivers implicitly know who is #1 and who is #2 and what they need to do (e.g. priority refueling for the #1 when there is such a situation, the #2 blocking free for the #1, etc.)
  • And while of course a pro driver can make a controlled crash, there is still risk involved for himself, other drivers through flying debris or punched tires when driving over carbon fibre, spectators, etc.

The owners/GMs of the team admitted to ordering it. As if F1 didn’t have enough scandals already last season. A Times writer called it “the worst act of cheating in the history of sport”. Article and lots of additional links.

Yes, the juicy detail here is that the young driver admitted he had to do it under immense pressure later, and then the sponsoring company asked/investigated its racing division and fired the heads. One of them Flavio Briatore, eccentric billionaire founder of Benetton and one of the main figures in making F1 popular again in the last two decades. There is no real comparison to basketball, maybe imagine Mark Cuban or Paul Allen ordering one of his lesser players to simulate an injury, or kick the main star’s defender against the knee.

I think the juicier detail is that the young driver, feeling the pressure of living up to his pop was an abject failure and was canned. After being canned he lashed out at his employer in the media. Like I said, I doubt that this is the first time such a thing was done, but definitely the first time a spoiled brat ratted out the boss. </devils advocate>

It's funny regardless

but yes I suggest watching in order. Things carry over quite a bit for a show about 5 morons getting into stupid situations. There are a lot of character relationships and minor characters you won’t appreciate unless you watch the other seasons.

There was very little resistance as he drove to the basket in this game. Compared to the Spanish defense that is.

Spain played great defense in that game, but I still expected more out of Parker in that game. Turkey doesn’t have a lot going for it, and it is amazing that they beat Spain earlier no matter how bad Spain was playing.

No Lost?

I liked Prison Break way past the 1st season
Boston Legal was a crack up, but I quit watching somewhere in season 2
24 is solid almost every season – a lot of resurrections though.

Lost kind of got spacey there the last 2 seasons.

But that series has had some of the best episodes bar none on TV. There was an intense episode with Sayid early on, and the "Hugo finds the DARMA van" was priceless.

Lost never did it for me, too. Don't know why. Maybe I don't like the mix between realistic and unrealistic.

Odd fact of the day: Nobody I know who is not Anglo-American ever cared for the Sopranos. I would say many countries in Europe don’t know that show existed. Same with a number of US shows. I really like The Wire, but it only runs on Pay TV cable. Whereas The Shield at least was on cable free TV. Also shows like Amazing Race and Survivor are none-events.

Then every now and then it would drop a great episode on you. Not so much the last couple years – well, not at all by that time. That Sayid episode was tops.

Adam doesn’t have a college degree, and Jamie majored in linguistics or something like that. Learning by doing a ton of different jobs in special effects for theater and movie industry. Tory and Grant (electrical engineering) have some science background and are former employees of ILM. Kari is also self-trained and rather an artist than a scientist.

And not just for basketball, also for soccer, tennis, baseball, …

Yeah I saw that picture too

his upper body looks a lot more trim.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Interesting that Spain is giving other teams problems by playing man to man instead of zone

In the NBA it’s usually the other way around. Depends on what you’re used to.

Doesn't surprise me, I watched him on the Greek youth team and he was bad

Never understood the hype around him. He still has to find his position.

But putting into a package on a team isn’t something I have seen at all yet.

It was a good show. He went to Voodoo dougnuts and Apizza Scholls.

He can be cheesy

He gets some spiritual thing out of eating, but he always eats cool food and normally does cool stuff.

Yeah, he does get cheesy.

But when he gets upset there is probably not a more creative bitcher on TV, in a hillarious way.

I watch both

I pretty much only watch sports and Food Network. I think the old Iron Chef is on the Travel Channel and so is No Reservations.
