post-Outlaw Minutes Distribution
let's see how this looks:
PG: Miller 27, Blake 18, Roy 3
SG: Roy 30, Rudy 18
SF: Batum 20, Webster 20, Rudy 8
PF: Aldridge 35, whoever 8, Przybilla 5
C: Oden 30, Przybilla 18
LMA 35Roy 33
Oden 30
Miller 27
Rudy 26
Joel 23
Batum 20
Webster 20
Blake 18
that 9-man rotation (plus garbage minutes for a couple players at PF2) seems like a fair distribution based on what each player brings to the team. Rudy replaces Outlaw as our primary 6th man, along with Martell. Blake plays in relief of Miller, and when we need shooters. i expect we'll see 5min/night of Greg-zilla. the 8 backup minutes at PF will go to Howard, Swift, Cunningham, Pendergraph, or whoever the team selects ( Bayless? j/k )
if Martell stays healthy, it will be very interesting comparing his recovery to Batum's improvements.
when i look at the list above, it's pretty much the order of importance in which i rank the players themselves. LMA ahead of Roy because of position scarcity, Batum and Webster are down low because right now they are both pure upside.
and incase you're wondering, i think we trade Travis mid-season for a backup "banger" PF and a future first-round draft pick. or we trade Outlaw WITH Bayless for those same pieces and another young, but proven, PG. (Felton? Conley?)

What? 4 teams are leaving the league?

No
We’ll get the 30th pick, and KP will buy the 26th from Boston for some of Paul Allen’s money.

Still don't know who that dude is
I hate rookies though. Remember how exciting the lottery was. Way more exciting than losing 4 games to the Rockets.
ohhhhh.
Thank you for enlightening me.

Alexey Shved, a 6'6" point guard/shooting guard out of Russia. KP likes players with size, and he has to replace Blake who he sent out in the deadline trade for a backup PF
Or Gani Lawal if he drops he a few spots.
There's Gotta Be More To Life
Shved would be the perfect replacement for Petteri on our Euro-Developmental Circuit

Exactly.
Last I checked, Outlaw is still on the roster, and the front office has said little to nothing about his going anywhere. I know there’s a lot of fans who would like it to happen, but that’s how the Kirk Hinrich trade became “imminent.” I’ll start thinking about post-Outlaw like I would start thinking about post-Roy. When it happens, I’ll think about it.

About 0.0000001%?

Actually, the front office being suspiciously silent on Outlaw is one of the reasons I'm convinced he'll be traded.
His contract is up at the end of the year, and we haven’t heard a single peep about how important he is, or how much we would like to keep him.
KP won’t let him walk for nothing, and no talk about resigning = traded.
by JordanLeDoux on Sep 17, 2009 8:04 AM PDT up reply actions
Are you sure?
By that logic, the Blazers are going to trade everyone but the rookies, Roy, and LA. They are silent in the off season because it’s the off season.
Is everyone but the rooks, Roy and LA an expiring contract that has been talked up for almost half a decade by the front office?
Me thinks not. Outlaw is in a special situation.
KP has mentioned Blake as being important, and Przybilla… I’m not sure what you’re trying to say…
by JordanLeDoux on Sep 17, 2009 8:35 AM PDT up reply actions
I'm worried about the strange silence about not trading Roy.
I’m not as worried about the silence surrounding LA’s trade. I’m sure because there has been no contract signed that it’s imminent.
μὴ φοβοῦ, μόνον πίστευε.
This is basically what I want to happen.
Although I suspect that either Nic or Martell will win out and play more like 25-28 minutes. Which crunches Rudy. Eeeughghh.
You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.
I think Rudy's only chance to see a boost in his minutes is to prove...
that he can play point(or at least defend them better than Blake), and bring more to the table offensively than Blake. I think this is the long term approach to keeping Rudy a blazer. He will have to learn to play point, or at least be able to guard them so he can tandem up with Roy…
I would like to see this happen, but hope Outlaw gets traded somewhere he can have success. I do not think he is the right fit here and do not think he will get the minutes to get much money out in FA. That is why I hope we trade him somewhere he will get playing time, but would still like to get value out of the trade.
Why not
trade him to Memphis for an unconditional 1st round pick?
The way they’re going that’ll give us a shot at John Wall
who cares?
When Greg Oden was 17 everyone knew he’d he the top pick in the draft. When OJ Mayo was 17 everyone knew he would be a lottery pick. This kid is the same. He is a transcendent talent.

ouch
that is an unfair remark. and uncalled for. if you are indeed a blazer fan then the only reason you would say that is to insult travis. of course if you want the blazers to lose then it would be a compliment.
myself, I think outlaw is going to prove himself a valuable starter for another team. but if he is ok with being backup PF for us then I’d rather he stay in portland.

so him succeeding on our team
you wouldn’t want.
This is exactly why people get ticked off at the people who want to get rid of Outlaw.
You're saying that they look like they're giving it their all. And you know why they look that way? Because they're bad, and it literally takes them the maximum physical effort to accomplish basic baseball tasks like throwing the ball from short to first. When David Eckstein throws the ball to first base, he has to wind up like a shot-putter, spin around forty-three times, and launch it at an angle 89 degrees from the horizontal. Afterwards, he undergoes an IV drip for a fortnight and he's so out of breath that he requires several months of acupuncture to regain the power of speech. For this we laud him. -Junior of Deadspin on 'scrappy' players
Its never to early
Nice work, I love these excorcises. I have a few comments:
- 33 minutes is not enough for Roy. He’s average 37 minutes a game so far. Looking at the league stats, the biggest superstars pay 35 – 38 minutes. 10 – 12 minutes a game of rest is plenty to keep him fresh. Every minute you keep him off the court beyond that is a minute the Blazers are putting out a worse team just to get inferior players minutes. This is a bad idea, and I seriously doubt McMillan plays him less than 36 minutes.
- 5 minutes a game for Pryzbilla at power forward? It was fun a couple of times to run
Oden and Joel together, but not for 450 minutes a season.
- I like the break down at PF and C (aside from Pryz at PF), though like a lot of people I fear 30 minutes might be longer than Oden can stay out of foul trouble still.
- I think you’re being too judicious in splitting up the small forward and point guard minutes. Someone is going to win those positions, and those guys are going to get the majority of minutes.
Andre Miller is clearly a better player than Blake, and keeping him on the bench for long stretches to get Blake minutes for a slight boost in our perimeter shooting (at the expense of literally every other aspect of the game) seems unlikely. Between Batum and Webster, one of those guys is going to win the starting position and get bigger minutes than the other. If one is even slightly more effective than the other, that justifies them getting the big majority of minutes.
Good points
I agree with your points and I think this fanpost highlights the train wreck that is coming regarding playing time. Basically, even if you remove last year’s 6th man (you could argue that Travis shared 6th man duties with Rudy), there are still not enough minutes to make these guys happy. There is no way either Nic or Martell will be happy with 20 minutes. I don’t think Rudy will be happy with 26 minutes. How are Blake and Pryz going to like having reduced minutes (and likewise reduced roles)? I know this is rehashing old ground, but yikes! This summer we basically replaced a marginal PG (Sergio – at least in our system) with a starting PG (Andre) and (a really likeable) 9th or 10th player (Channing) with another potential starter (Martell). I know that almost to a man these are good guys, but they are also professional athletes and still have pride and egos. What’s the over\under before we hear the first public complaints about PT and who will they come from…

Bill Walton cursed (at) our team doctors
by Jacksonville on Sep 17, 2009 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions
when Greg hurt his knee
I wrote that Bill needed to be summoned to PDX to break the age-old “Blazer’s #1-2 draft choice centers always getting injured” curse

When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
if everybody stays healthy
the wing positions are a mess, and someone is going to be unhappy (and that’s even “after” Outlaw is dealt)
I agree, Roy will play more than 33 mpg
I also expect Miller to play 30+ mpg, and Blake to take all the remaining PG minutes (except for in garbage time, then Bayless will get some run)
The goal is to win games, not make everybody happy with their roles.
A consolidation deal (or two) will need to be made if players start complaining about their reduced roles
and that’s why KP makes the big bucks
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!
Don't blow your $ just cause you're rich
When the injuries happen, which they always do, our depth will be a blessing. Travis can play multiple positions. One injury to any of the rotation players and most of the minute crunch problems are solved. Bayless seems the most likely to be dissatisfied but anger is an awesome motivator and he seems to use it as fuel for the fire. The truth is he is not a point guard yet and he is being paid well to learn his craft.
Anger is the path to the dark side.
