Team Rudy or Team Nic?
Thanks to its victory over Poland, Spain has qualified for the EuroBasket quarterfinals and is set to face France tomorrow in a battle for the hearts and minds of Blazers fans. This is perhaps one of life's eternal debates: Rudy Fernandez (and Victor Claver if you're picky) or Nicolas Batum?
There can only be one.
Please explain your reasoning in the comments.

I can't whole-heartedly root for a team with a Laker on it.
Therefore, I root for Batum.

I think I hate Gasol less than either of them, much less both of them combined…
You're saying that they look like they're giving it their all. And you know why they look that way? Because they're bad, and it literally takes them the maximum physical effort to accomplish basic baseball tasks like throwing the ball from short to first. When David Eckstein throws the ball to first base, he has to wind up like a shot-putter, spin around forty-three times, and launch it at an angle 89 degrees from the horizontal. Afterwards, he undergoes an IV drip for a fortnight and he's so out of breath that he requires several months of acupuncture to regain the power of speech. but Gasol wears the laker uniform.

Nico
because tih doesn’t like him…
j/k…most don’t seem to carry the same animosity toward Nicolas as others, but my real reasoning is that Rudy is a known (excellent) commodity, whereas if Nicolas excels – the Blazer stock goes up even more.
France
This is a tough one but I lean france because I sadly suspect we can’t keep Rudy, so I’m rooting for the guy who I think will be a blazer for the long haul. Additionally, Rudy has performed at a high level. I want Nic to have that experience.
In the end though, I want them to both put points in other peoples faces and dominate. The rest doesn’t really matter to me but Ben made me pick sides.

While France was the last team to qualify, they are now the overall favorite. Spain played much less dominant this year than in previous tournaments.
Rubio looks outright bad, and while Navarro scores nicely he plays no defense. The French team has integrated a number of youngsters very well, most notably Nico and Antoine Diot. Parker is balling. And while they will be outmatched under the hoops with their big guys against the Gasols & Co (well, mostly just Turiaf) I think France can take this one. It will be interesting to see who Nico has to defend and how he fares against guards Rudy and Navarro.
There's Gotta Be More To Life
The battle between Rudy and Nic has just begun!
In reality this Rudy vs. Nic thing is not just for one game. This is an ongoing battle for playing time even though they officially play different positions.
I like them both, but Rudy is going to have to get somewhat bigger, and a whole lot stronger, if he wants to stay up with Batum. Nic is also able play either of the guard spots better than Rudy can play small forward. Rudy is currently only a two, while Batum can play in multiple spots.
I hate to say it, but I think Nic, Martell, and Brandon are going to squeeze Rudy’s playing time so much that he is going to ask to leave the Rose City.
The sad part is that I really like Rudy, but I don’t think he will be satisfied with a reduced role. If I were advising him, I would say, "Get in the weight room and fight your way to what you want; don’t be like Sergio and run away from the fight. If you stay and fight, you will be a better player in the end, and likely, an NBA champion."
There is more to an athlete than how fast they can run, they also better be able to see what they are doing and know why they are doing it.

’nuff said.
You're saying that they look like they're giving it their all. And you know why they look that way? Got to Go France
My view is that Rudy is established and we know what he has to offer… Batum is still growing and showing more and more promise. I don’t see Rudy wanting to stick around in Portland much longer without more of a roll on the team… I don’t see that happening so I feel we may wind up trading him sometime down the road while he has value and we have the leverage.
Claver is raw and has many more games ahead of him. He also won’t be a blazer for a few years so I’d like to see him take some lumps and learn to grow from them over the next couple of years. Basketball isn’t easy… yeah we want you, but you need to earn it in europe first.
I struggle sitting on my hands... don't you?
France will win
Spain will play on a back to back and they’ll have to travel in the morning so it’ll be hard for them. And France weren’t qualified until this summer and tomorrow’s win would be the start of a happy end.
I hope the arena will be crowded because it’s been quiet in the arenas we’ve been playing. The other thing I hope is Batum stops counting when he dunks on Gasol. A wink or a friendly spank would be enough in my opinion.
Go #5 !!!! (french number 5)
Are you proposing that Nic should spank Pau?
That might start an international incident. But it would be hilarious. Do you think you would get T up for that in the League? I forget who it was, but didn’t someone pretend to kiss Nowitzki? Did they get a T for that?

I voted Batum. Rudy’s offensive acumen is well-known throughout the league. This will be the year that Batum breaks out, wins the starting SF role, and becomes another scoring threat for the Blazers, in addition to his shut-down defense. Also, assuming Batum starts, a second unit with Blake, Rudy, Martell and Outlaw in the mix will be impossible to guard.

Would be sorta nice to see the *new* team in town win the championship ..
As much as I respect amlmart1, Spain has been the dominant team for so long. So, at least for this tournament, I’ve been rooting for Nic. It would be good for Euro basktball for France to win something they’ve never won before. (Sorry, amlmart1 .. no disrespect meant.)
Also as others have said, I would like Rudi and Nic (and Claver) to have great games with no injuries .. and then to bring their competitive play in good spirit back this season to the Blazers.

"I'm at the thingamajig talking the yakety-yak" - Kenny Smith
I'll go with Spain
1. I’m from Spain
2. I love Rudy
3. We need to avenge last Eurobasket’s final last shot loss
4. Close the circle that crowns us as the best basketball nation in the last 4 years (World’s Gold, Euro Silver, Olympic Silver, Euro Gold)
5. I love offensive basketball, and when Spain is playing for real they are the best offensive team in the tournament, while France’s offense works mainly around Parker
6. I like the story of the team overcoming Scariolo’s decisions and get carried to gold by the player’s pride
7. Sidney’s revenge. Spain were playing amazing in 2000 Olympics, and advanced to the quarter finals as the leader of their group only to lose against the last seeded USA on what probably was Marbury’s best game ever. Now it’s our turn to do the same.
8. Spain in one gold short of what they deserve. They deserved the gold on last year’s Olympic final where the refs forgot they were calling a FIBA game and didn’t call the travelings and allowed Howard to camp on the paint and push and shove whoever he wanted.
Nobody expects a Spanish Acquisition!

it's not as cleaarcut as the greeks want us to believe
many small fouls from the Greeks, but nevertheless lot of theatricals.
I'm rooting for Spain
I love Batum, Diaw and Turiaf, but I hate Tony Parker. Spain is my favorite to win it all despite the early rumblings. They are much more skilled than the freakishly athletic French squad.
Watching Ricky, Rudy, Pau, Marc, Navarro, Felipe Reyes, Sergio Llull and our boy Claver (who unfortunately has became the 12th man lately) playing together is just delightful. Even though Pau is a Laker during the NBA season (and we all hates the Lakers), he shouldn’t be hated that way while playing for his national team.
too bad that they lost two games playing delightfully.
Why can’t you just say " I am Spanish"
Because I am Israeli
I just really like Team Spain. I’m more familiar with both Team Spain and Team France than most of you guys, as I watched them in previous tournaments. I even had a chance to watch most French and Spanish players in domestic leagues and Euroleague games.
By the way, the Spainiards had a rough start because their new coach (the Italian Sergio Scariolo) tried to force them into a low-tempo halft-court game, which clearly don’t benefit the roster’s key players. At the 2nd quater of Sunday’s game against Lithuania Team Spain started running, completed a 23-0 run in about 3.5 minutes to ice that game and played their most impressive game of the tournament yesterday against the Team Poland (who had home-court advantage…)

Tony Parker mayn I expected more from him in this game after they got a whole days rest but instead he got outscored by that little kid Ricky embarrassing
who is KP rooting for?
The world must know!
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"
