Junk Drawer 9/13: Balls of Steel Edition

Oregon won on a nailbiter. Cal terminated its opponent with extreme prejudice (again). UCLA beat Tennessee (excellent win for the Pac 10), Washington ended its losing streak to Idaho. And other crud happened as well, but the game ball for this week's pac 10 football goes to the 19 year old with balls of steel, Matt Barkley from USC who snatched victory from the still beating hearts of 100000+ die hard Buckeye fans who sat stunned in amazement after he led the Trojans on an almost miraculous 90 yard drive to pay dirt. Looks like the reign of terror isn't quite over for the Trojans, if today is anything to go by. I can't wait to see the fireworks in Eugene and Berkeley in a few weeks. Pac 10 should at least be interesting this season, as Cal looks as strong as it has ever been.

Update (1:46):

To make this fair to all pac ten teams, I will put up final scores for every game involving those schools-

Wake Forest 24 - Stanford 17

Washington 42 - Idaho 23

California 59 - Eastern Wash 7

Hawaii 38 - Wash. St. 20

UCLA 19 - Tennessee 15

Oregon State 23 - UNLV 21

Arizona 34 - Northern Ariz. 17

Oregon 38 - Purdue 36

USC 18 - Ohio St. 15

Something tells me in a few hours this thread will be filled with angry Beavers fans wanting to know why you didn't mention their team.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.—Dune

Just because I value rebounds and shooting efficiency doesn't mean I want to argue with you for hours about Wages of Wins.

I thought I read somewhere that they played San Jose State (on another blog).

And you would think I got that wrong on purpose, seeing as I am a USC fan. But no, that was an error due to carelessness. My bad.

It really isn't fair. They cheated natural selection by being big and strong,

and also have a sharp, pointy appendage on their nose to gore people with. All I got was an opposable thumb.

Paragraph from a journal that some of you all might find interesting

I am an artist, and to defenestrate all modesty, I would say I’m pretty damn good. But I purposely chose not to go to art school even though I believe myself more than able to attend such an institution. This certainly isn’t out of a crisis of confidence, although, creeping doubts do linger, but it is out of artistic principle. I believe that the idea that great art can arise from an individual who is inculcated into a system, an institution, is paradoxical at best. Sure they can teach you the banalities of technique, but that is not important in my mind. Art to me, is an outlet for a stirring sense of freedom within the heart, the physical shore onto which the joyous wake of inner expression lands. It is here in the deep and sheltered regions from one’s mind that arise the most pertinent and original thought. Without exposure, they become petrified, forgotten and relegated to a sphere of self doubt. Within an institution that promotes systemization such action cannot be achieved. Art schools restrict what you can and cannot do, assignments, credit requirements, such rote itemization of art, fogs the sky of the soul from which expression arises. As the most pure and earnest extension of an individual, art needs an unencumbered mind to break the gravitational bonds emplaced by the weights of reality. The new idea begins as a tender and naked foal of expression, whose wobbly legs belie the unbridled spirit that soon overtakes it.

Might use it as a base to write an essay in the future

Maybe Cal.

Oregon doesn’t have the offense to put pressure on SC, and I don’t think Barkley will be unleashed unless he absolutely has to be (like on the go ahead drive). We have too many weapons at skill positions, and the running game is going to be as good or better than last year.

delighted Beaver fan here

cant say I was too thrilled with the UO outcome but if it makes Duck fans happy so be it…

As for the Beavers, they put together a 87 yard drive very late in the fourth with time dwindling to pull out a tough win. Typical Mike Riley football, start slow, finish strong.

I’m glad the Beav’s continue to fly under the radar and not get bragged up like the over-rated ducks. I’m glad people are pointing out that upcoming USC confrontation. That is one game I am going to watch with glee. I’m willing to bet Dirty Socks left foot the ducks lose by at least 30.

The Beav’s have a real test next against a potent Cincinnati team. Good luck Beavs. Meh on the ducks.

Why are Beavers fans so petty?

The Ducks are not ranked and the Beavers are, therefore the Ducks are not rated or overrated.

by tominhawaii on Sep 13, 2009 9:33 AM PDT up reply actions

the ducks were ranked one week ago

and many of their fans balked at the 7.5 win line out of Vegas. I’m not sure petty is a fair description… maybe I just hang around too many duck fans who constantly brag on how well the ducks are going to fair… I see the Beavers in the underdog and over-looked roles each season and they play a brand of football I like that produces a good number of NFL caliber players…

Brian T Smith is doing a good job

From today’s Columbian:

It’s also the kind of guy Blazers guard Brandon Roy wanted.

Roy, the new face of the franchise, said he watched from afar this summer while Pritchard and the team were picked apart and critiqued for an inability to land free agents Turkoglu and Milsap.

All the while, Roy said he wanted a player like Andre Miller.

Roy stated he had several conversations with Portland coach Nate McMillan last season, based around the idea the Blazers could use a veteran leader who would guide and lead the team as the pressure intensified and the stakes increased.

Roy went so far as to say that he wanted — perhaps needed — to team up with a strong, solid veteran, someone who could help him shoulder the weight as he ascended from a role player into an All-NBA selection.

“I thought that was answered,” said Roy, referring to Miller signing with the Blazers.

I had worked for our family business and it had just closed…in large part because my father had an affair with my best friend’s wife. How is that for a Jerry Springer moment?? My 30th came shortly there after ……understandably no one remembered ….which was fine since all I wanted to do lay in my living with the shades drawn. It's funny how many people didn't get that Dave wasn't completely serious in his Seattle post

Might be his most criticized column after the “trade for Shaq”, “reduction of teams” and “fatty on the frontpage” posts in the last year.

Yeah, I felt bad for him. I hope he doesn't quit trying to write humorous stuff

because I think that’s when he’s at his best. I don’t think Dave has a mean bone in his body.

Yeah

He sure seems like a swell guy. I bet he has days where he says, “Why do I bother?” It ticks me off when people get bossy with him. People seem to forget that it is his blog.

by tominhawaii on Sep 13, 2009 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but that's the curse of having a lot of readers

Some of them will be unhappy with you at any given time, the number will depend upon how controversial the topic is. You have to be able to handle that in order to blog in front of a large reader base.

If he actually is frustrated with this, he could consider placing these posts (since they’re basically OT anyway) on a personal blog and linking that blog from here. That way, only people who want to read it will visit, as opposed to the larger user base of Blazer fans who may not be interested in non-Blazer posts, increasing the negative reaction.

by Timmay! on Sep 13, 2009 3:26 PM PDT up reply actions

It's not often that Dave's humor falls flat with a bunch of people

Even though it was clearly tongue-in-cheek, it kept going on and on and on so it felt a little bit like a rant. There were a ton of great lines though, as usual. But good satire is tougher to write than it looks, and even someone who’s as smart and funny as Dave can have some off days. I also think that when you write a bunch of stuff poking fun at someone — or in this case poking fun at an entire city — it can bounce back at you pretty easily.

What Kim Clijsters just pulled off is simply amazing

Where does in rank relative to other recent stunning athletic achievements, like those of Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps?

by jksnake99 on Sep 13, 2009 7:59 PM PDT reply actions

I don't understand why it is impressive

Not to be snarky, but all she did is have a kid with that guy who sings songs from Free Credit Report and took a two year vacation. She should be more rested then all the other players.

by tominhawaii on Sep 13, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

she's only the 3rd mother ever to win a grand slam, but its not so much about the kid for me

Her daughter is 18 months old, so its not like she came back within a few months of pregnancy. However, she won the freaking US Open in her 3rd tournament back from a more than 2 year hiatus. Further, she beat both Williams sisters along the way. Absolutely remarkable.

by jksnake99 on Sep 13, 2009 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

My comparisons to Phelps and Bolt are kind of dumb, upon reflection

but come on, how many examples of someone performing at their highest level a month into a return from a 2+ year break in any sport?

by jksnake99 on Sep 13, 2009 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

MJ was pretty darn good in ’95… the double nickel game, etc. He was a little shaky in the playoffs, but still flat out great.

by Cablinasian on Sep 13, 2009 11:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think it was a dumb comparison

I’m just not impressed with motherhood compared to all the other things folks come back from. When you compare her to that cancer guy from the Red Sox or Lance Armstrong where they didn’t have a choice. I don’t know how good she was before she was pregnant so I don’t have a benchmark for her.

by tominhawaii on Sep 13, 2009 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, you and Cab bring up solid examples

Jon Lester didn’t miss anywhere near two years, but Lance Armstrong won all his tours post-cancer. Stunning feat, for sure.

Further, Clijsters is only 26 whereas MJ and Lance were performing at stunning levels when they were much older.

I’m not a doctor, so I’m not going to try to compare the challenge of returning from the specific cancers Lester and Armstrong had to returning 18 months after motherhood.

For what its worth, before her retirement Clijsters was a very accomplished player who had reached #1 in the world and had gone 1-3 in Grand Slam finals, winning her only previous slam in the 2005 US Open, the last time she played the event.

by jksnake99 on Sep 13, 2009 11:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Well said

I’m a pig, so I’d probably be more impressed if I found her attractive and she didn’t have a kid. Children are a burden on society. ;-)

by tominhawaii on Sep 13, 2009 11:46 PM PDT up reply actions

whats the big deal?

the best female VB player I have ever played with has 3 kids and puts the fear of God in pretty much everybody except me.

by southern oregon on Sep 13, 2009 11:50 PM PDT up reply actions

To clarify, though

She had been in intense training since January for this comeback. It’s not like she suddenly said “I’m coming back”, and got a wild card to The Open, and was suddenly just good again. When she walked onto that court two weeks ago, she was in full game shape, and her instincts kicked in. Great story, but it’s only been a couple years since an unseeded woman came back and won a Grand Slam. It’s not unheard of.

Also worth noting that Agassi was notorious for these kinds of comebacks. Well, without the motherhood part. I presume. In fact, pretty sure he won the 1994 US Open while unseeded (but at least played some tournaments to warm up).

by Timmay! on Sep 14, 2009 12:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Oh, almost forgot

In other sports, George Forman would be an example of a similar event. Just thinking out loud about other examples.

by Timmay! on Sep 14, 2009 12:07 AM PDT up reply actions

yeah, those are also good points

an example from the women’s tennis world would be Monica Seles, who won the Aussie Open within 6 months of coming back after taking two years off following being stabbed.

None of these are perfect comparisons, but maybe I’m overly hyping Clijsters. Maybe its the most impressive sports comeback story of the past few years (or perhaps decade) as opposed to the greatest ever.

Did you see the points I left on the bench this week? Yowza. I could have had a really good performance.

In your defense, it was kind of fluky to be beaten by John Carlson.

Though I think LDT, Brady, NE D, and Vincent Jackson will probably score enough tomorrow night to take care of things regardless of Carlson.

I face Sophia next week… hopefully she has a repeat of this week.
