Any Guesses on LMA's New Contract?

Brandon got his big contract recently finalized, even Dante Cunnigham knows how much loot he is going to get. You all got to be wondering the same thing as me--How much will Lamarcus get? LMA is a certified starting power forward who has the potential to be a SuperStar or atleast an Allstar. The guy averages almost 20 a game(which is more than Garnett) with 8 rebs and a block or 2 , and hes young and still developing his game! Now me personally, I know nada about player salaries and how they work all the lawyer mumbo jumbo. I do understand the basics of the salary cap and all that. I think LMA deserves a hefty payday, how much I dont know, maybe 4-5 years 50 to 70 million in that range- somewhere. And the amount of years has alot to do with it as well. Ofcourse,  I know nada....Tell me what you think after the poll.

im guessing

12-14 mill per year for 5 years, or 4 years with a player/team option on the 5th.

I'll go with 5/60M

That sounds about right…….yeah?

Anything over 5/60

would be too much in my opinion. $12 million per on avg is the top of what I believe the Blazers will want to pay. They were rumored to be wanting to sign him for $10 million per, and he was wanting closer to $14 million. Still, look around at the other PF’ s in the league that are at or just above LMA in accomplishments, and not many of them are over $12 million per year on avg.

Players who avg about what LMA did last year.
Josh Smith 5years $58 million
Charlie Villaneuva 5 years $37 million
Al Jefferson 5 years $65 million
David West 5 years $45 million
Carlos Boozer 6 years $70 million
Antawn Jamison 4 years $50 million
Paul Millsap 4 years $32 million

While I believe LMA is at least as good as all of these players, if not better than most. Only 2 of them make over $12 million avg per year, and none make over $13 million.

Roy and Dante have set the limits on Lma salary

Lma will get paid less than Roy but more than Dante. Now they just have to haggle where in that range. Sure one got the CBA max salary while the other got the minimum and everyone knew that all along. The point is it shouldn’t really matter, as the Blazers can either sign him now in hope a shaving a few bucks off the deal by signing early. Lma’s agent knows that they’ll make more the longer they wait. my assumption is that long term stability will cost a few bucks over waiting until Restricted free agency and letting the Market set Lma’s value. Either way Lma gets paid and will be a long-term Blazer.

$12M x 5 years = $60M.

I think it would be unreasonable to assume he deserves any more than that. I sort of hope he doesn’t sign a new contract so that he REALLY earns it this season. Playing in a contract year might do wonders for his post game.

I’d hate to see him get paid now only to main his 18 & 7 status for the next 5 years.

I don't know if I'd call this my official 'guess'

but it was something I’ve been thinking about. In 2010-11, the Blazers look to be above the cap but below the tax threshold. Probably in the same boat in 2011-12. It’s starting in 2012-13 when the trio of Fernandez, Bayless and Batum all come off their rookie scale deals that the team salary figure could really go up. So, what about signing LMA to a deal that doesn’t have increases yearly but is flatlined or even drops a bit each year? As a way to ‘save’ money for future salaries.

For example, pay LMA in 2010-11 the same amount as what Roy gets – the max. This will probably be in the $12.5 to $13.0 million range. But instead of getting the raise in 2011-12 that Roy gets, Aldridge gets the same amount (or perhaps a bit less).

So let’s say the max is $12.5 million in 2010-11 and he makes that same amount each of the 5 years. That’s $62.5 million for the length of the contract. If he signed a ‘traditional’ contract for that amount with maximum raises, he’d make $10.3 million in 2010-11, $11.4 in 2011-12, $12.5 in 2012-13, $13.6 in 2013-14 and $14.7 in 2014-15. So he gets more upfront (when the team can afford it better) and less when the team is looking to up his teammates.

If that’s too much, give him a 2% decrease every year (2% of the first year’s salary), but again start him at the max. So if his first year was $12.5 million, he’d make $60 million over 5 years, but a bit frontloaded.

Just some ideas of how creative financing can fit LMA’s new deal into the timeframe in which future extensions/re-signings are going to be important.

That is a really good idea.

Could the team also do something ilke they did with the Milsap offer, including a signing bonus to be paid up front if LMA agrees to a deal that is structured front heavy with decreases. This should be attractive to LMA as he would get a good lump sum right away instead of having to wait for it. Then again, maybe you can’t do that on extentions. Just thinking out loud here.

by usmcr3049 on Sep 2, 2009 12:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Absolutely

Aldridge can get up to 20% of the total contract upfront as a signing bonus, which is then applied against the cap each year proportionately.

by Storyteller on Sep 2, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a good addition to Storyteller's good idea!

But avoid a player option year at the end, because the last year is going to be relatively low and that would encourage LMA to opt out. In Roy’s case the last year is like $19M+ so it’s less likely he opts out.

the only thing is that then limits what he can sign to in the next contract no?

aren’t salary raises only capped at a certain % per year?

by nima on Sep 3, 2009 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions

No

As long as the Blazers retain Bird rights on him, they can sign him for up to the maximum allowable under the new CBA when he’s up for a new contract.

Bad bad timing for Portland.

I don't care what we sign him to it just needs to happen sooner rather than later...

I mean even if we’re totally wrong about Lamarcus, (I don’t think we are but,) if we were,…. it’s not like we don’t still have the GM that moved Zach….. and I’m just guessing, but Lamarcus’s “issues” are the complete other end of the gym as Z-bo’s …. so we’d get something decent’er back than a Frye …right? not that Frye was bad but… lol yeah… ya know ?

I’m guessing around $70 million over the five years.

If Pritchard can get Aldridge down to $60 million … I think he’ll have done a very good job because I think that would be below market value for a player like Aldridge.
