Will Team Be Arriving Early for Pre Training Camp Workouts This Year?

Sorry if this was posted elsewhere, but I have been out of the Blazersedge/Blazers loop a little the past few weeks and I was wondering if the team was meeting up for workouts again this year prior to Training Camp like they have the past few years.

I realize that in some ways the extra few weeks of rest may be better for the guys, but seeing almost the entire team show up early last year was certainly impressive.

Anyone heard anything on this?

See, that's what I thought too

But I can’t find any official info on this.
Even though the preseason hasn’t begun in earnest, having the team show up a little early gets me stoked for next year and helps carry me through the basketball news doldrums.

56 days until the 1st REGULAR season game!

Don’t think you will find anything “official” since the pre-training camp stuff is generally by it’s nature un-official and player-initiated.

I expect we will start to hear stuff about guys hitting town and the PF starting shortly after the holiday weekend.

How did you guys win that?

Who don't we want to show up early for training?

For me I don’t want to see Przy & Roy.

Miller doesn't have to come early either

Rudy and Batum can do their thing in Europe if they want.

by Magnum on Sep 2, 2009 12:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Rudy won't arrive until after Sept 20

because of the EuroBasket competition. Batum is also in that competition but if France gets knocked out early he should be able to get here before Rudy. Przy usually comes just before training camp so I wouldn’t expect him to come early.

LMA is in an interesting situation.

If he comes early, before signing a new contract, he unnecessarily risks getting hurt with some career ending injury and never getting the big contract. He has to come to training camp on time, but he might not come early.

by BlazerFanSince1970 on Sep 1, 2009 1:35 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I really hope that that situation works out.

Keeping LMA at a fair rate is VERY important for the Blazers.

I remember last year it was big news as they had a huge turnout with Przy being the only no-show.

It was such a rare thing in team sports that it was discussed on PTI and was a headline story on ESPN.com

If memory serves, Brandon was the ringleader who organized.

Team is at a different place in their progression this year so maybe it is unnecessary – and will save their legs for a longer season – but it was nice to be able to have some basketball to discuss prior to training camp! And it was an impressive feat!

From J. Quick's story today
Taking part in the scrimmage at the team’s practice facility was Oden, Brandon Roy, Steve Blake, Jerryd Bayless, Martell Webster and free agent Dan Dickau, who is from Vancouver, Wash.

So we know those players are in town and playing together.

saw Dante and Martell at Q'doba on Aug 21

looked like they had just come from the PF. So, unless Dante left since then, or is on vacation, seems likely he would be there too

I saw Pendy last friday at Fire on the Mountain.

So I know he’s in town too… although I’m sure he’s just here to work on getting that contract signed.

Oden was at UFC

this weekend. So he is definitely in town.

we should meet them at the airport as they arrive for pre season workouts. if somebody puts together a spreadsheet for when they arrive at PDX, i will recruit people to make signs for us. let me know.

by SonsofShawnKemp on Sep 2, 2009 12:26 AM PDT reply actions

Am I the only person who doesn't like the early meet up?

I think it’s the reason Webster and Frye were hurt at the start of the season last year.

They should be working out anyway so I’m not super-duper against it. I just think it may be unnecessary.

by tominhawaii on Sep 2, 2009 4:07 AM PDT reply actions

Me too.

There are certain players who I certainly don’t want there right now. Well, they can be there, but not working hard.

Roy.
Przy.
Blake.
LMA.
Miller.

why do people keep saying miller?

he is on a new team with players he has never played with. playing together is the best way to learn how to play together. so the longer he spends with the bigs before preseason starts the better he knows thier tendencies and they know his. im not saying he needs to come practice full speed 8 hours a day, but hanging out at the training facility and messing around wouldnt hurt. and he says he should be the starter, so if blake is there now, I think miller should be there too.

Pitchers and Catchers Report

Agreed.

Probably not a wise move to ramp the season up too early if – as the Blazers do – you expect to be playing into the 2nd round or Western Conference Finals this year. Season is long enough, especially with Rudy and Nic playing all summer.

Having said that, getting those reports last year was the basketball equivalent of hearing “pitcher and catchers are starting to report” – and gets the juices flowing for the season to start!

by texoswego on Sep 2, 2009 11:50 AM PDT reply actions

sorry had to laugh. when I read ‘pitchers and catcher report’ i thought of something else.

me too

It didn’t help that he said “get the juices flowing.”
