Doesn't work like that.

You need 8 because you’re distributing the same amount of points to less players, meaning each player is slightly better on average.

I don't like the numbers

I understand the 1 7 restriction, but why the 3 6’s. If you picked 4 6’s, that’s 24 points, leaving you with 3 points to give to 4 players.

If I picked:
Oden – 4
LMA – 5
TO – 3
B Roy – 6
Miller – 4

Bench
Joel – 2
Rudy – 3
Blake – 2

Coach
Nate -Free

That’s 29 points. So what if I like the Blazers.

or sub Channing – 2 for Miller -4 and move Blake into the starting position. That makes it 27. I don’t like the player selection either. It won’t let me choose Bayless, Graph, Daunte, or Webster.

What's the differance of 3-6 mil? oh about 20+ more losses, and the chance to watch the only star leave by the end of the season. Suck it Hedo!

Who is that you ask, well that shell of a man with his junk tucked away I think his name is Hedo. At least he used to be.

Nice Post, here are my BALLERS

This was really hard to do:

Ramon Session (3) (Distributor That can add some points also)
John Salmons (4) (Defensive Specialist)
Danny Granger (6) (The main scorer/heart of the team) (Sorry Brandon!)
David Lee (4) (Can do it all in the post)
Andrew Bogut (4) (Anchor in the middle)

Bench:
Rodney Stuckey (3) (Main scorer off the bench in both guard positions)
Mariese Spieghts (2) (Bruiser off the bench for the down low positions)
Jason Kapono (2) (Three point specialist)

Coach:
He’s not a choice but screw it
Nate Robinson

(If I have to chose one of the given coaches, I pick Doc Rivers)

argh

I had a nice writeup of my whole selection process, but lost it by mistake. so, just the team then:

I decided ahead of time to go with a 6-5-4-4-2-2-2-2 model

PG Deron Williams (6)
SG Jason Terry (4)
SF Caron Butler (5)
PF Paul Millsap (4)
-C Joel Przybilla (2)

Marrese Speights (2)
Mike MIller (2)
Austin Daye (2)

Joel is clearly the most undervalued player on the list IMHO, and there are several that to me are way overvalued. But then again, what’s the goal? Win one game – win this year, start a franchise, win a fantasy league? the goal would obviously affect the picks a LOT.

Also, it’s not stated anywhere that we have to have starters or even fill out a balanced roster by positions, so that could change things too.

How did you guys win that?

High value mix

Derrick Rose (5)
Brandon Roy (6)
Nicolas Batum (3)
Paul Millsap (4)
Marc Gasol (3)

Bench
Lou Williams (2) → Underrated, can play both guard spots
Joel Przybilla (2) → Grossly underrated
Danilo Gallinari (2) → Can play both forward spots.

Coach: Ric Adelman if all else fails

I would have also liked Marvin Williams, Trevor Ariza, Thaddeus Young but they are too expensive. Interesting idea, you are often just 1 or 2 points short from a really really good team.

Tried to balance it out offensively & defensively as well as by position, but not a lot to work with. I agree that some of the values were puzzling; Joel is definitely the steal.

Starters
Calderon (4)
Mike Miller (2)
Lebron (7)
Millsap (4)
Camby (4)

Bench
Blake (2)
Matt Barnes (2)
Przybilla (2)

So, obviously I spent a bunch on the star, Lebron, but you have to have a star to win big. Calderon is a All-Star level PG, Mike Miller is a bargain at the cost of 2 points, and can space the floor and hit 3s. Millsap and Camby are a banging front court, capable of grabbing tons of rebounds, and providing scoring/toughness.

My bench is Blazer-centric, but Blake and Przy are values at 2 points each. Barnes is a multi-dimensional guy as well (plus he has some neck-tats, too….so he’s got that going for him)

Lebron (7)
Bass (3)
Przybilla (2)

Bench-
Fisher (2)
Batum (3)
Frye (2)

Coach-
Jerry Sloan

I feel like there should be more points allowed and a higher minimum of players. I.e. 30 points allowed and 9 player minimum, or 32 and 10, because I don’t have enough backups.

That being said, I have Lebron James and Brandon Roy… combined with shooting point guards, a banging/shooting PF and a defensive center. Batum is there because I love him, and Frye is there because he can play 4 and 5 and he can shoot (sometimes) and is cheap.

by ostateblazer on Aug 6, 2009 6:39 PM PDT reply actions

I wasn't such a homer

I suppose I would pick more of a 2/3 or a 3/4 instead of Batum, given that I only have 8 players.

Forgot explanation and lol at my title

Assuming a healthy Yao you have 2 of the most unstoppable scorers in the game along with some good shooting to spread the floor and some quality veterans coming off the bench 130 points a game

As opposed to the equally likely assumption that Yao is gone for his career and you are out your 6 player points forever.

PG Miller – 4

Wing Roy – 6

Big- Pryz – 2

Wing – Fernandez 3

PG – Blake – 2

Big – Lee – 4

Big – Bass – 3

Given the artificial constraint of 27 points, that group would get it done.

Bench:

Theory: Give Lebron a speedy pg, surround him with 3 point shooters who can cut (fernandez) and slash (lewis) and a potentially dominant force down low (oden). Then go to blair off the bench for rebounding, miller for firepower off the bench and D. Jones for defense.

Coach: D’Antoni. Even with Oden, this team was born for running.

For fun

a 12 man roster with 38 points, allowing for 1 extra 5 point guy (4 additional players, 11 more points. 11-5=6pts for 3 players at 2 points each.)

Paul (7)
Fernandez (3)
Lebron (7)
Scola (3)
Przybilla (2)

Bench:
Blake (2) —steal
Smith (4)
Miller (2) —steal
Blair (2)
Speights (2)

Augustin (2) —steal
Daye (2)

By comparison: the 12 man roster this year…

Miller (4)
Roy (6)
Batum (3)
Aldridge (5)
Oden (4)
Blake (2)
Fernandez (3)
Outlaw (3)
Przybilla (2)

Assume the rest of the players will be 2’s (6 additional points)

Adds up to 38

this doesn't work though.

Because the list above is made up of basically only top-8 players, so you’d have the deepest bench in the league.

You can measure skill and talent with your eyes, but productivity is shown through statistics.

Lock it down

Mike Conley (3) too cheap to pass up
Courtney Lee (3) good defensive sg’s are hard to find
Kevin Durant (6) superstar and ultimate scoring machine
Kevin Love(4) rebounding and outlet passing
Greg Oden (4) rebounding and paint dominance

Darren Collison (2)
Nic Batum (3)
DeJuan Blair (2)

Top to bottom that team would be dominant within 3 years even withou any veterens

by MadBlaze on Aug 7, 2009 5:55 AM PDT reply actions

At first,

it seemed like 27 points is not enough to build a quality team, but after couple minutes of searching I found my players

PG Rodney Stuckey (3)
SG Brandon Roy (6) – of course
SF Shane Battier (3)
PF Luis Scola (3)
C Greg Oden (4)

Mike Conley (3)
Trevor Ariza (3)
Joel Przybilla (2)

coach – Jerry Sloan

This team looks like a contender, don’t they?

You can’t choose Blazers’ first 8 guys and still be under those 27 points, so it probably means that we have really good team here, at relatively low cost :]

Check mine out

PG Chris Paul (7)
SG Rudy Fernandez (3)
SF Trevor Ariza (3)
PF Luis Scola (3)
C Greg Oden (4)

Steve Blake (2)
Joel Przybilla (2)
Andre Nocioni (3)

Co

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Here's my squad

Starters:
Brooks (3)
Roy (6)
Battier (3)
Scola (3)
Nene (5)

bench:
Rudy (3)
Bowen (3)
Pryz (2)

Yeah I’m stuck on Blazers and Rockets with a Nugget for variety. Here’s the rub of the problem, on average you get 3 players worth 4 and 5 players worth 3. If you want a player value of 6 then one of your 4 players becomes a 2 or two 3’s become 2’s. So in my mind this is about finding best value. Anyone suprised that those players were Blazers and Rockets. So in my system to get Nene (5) one of my 3’s became Pryz (2). To get Roy(6) my other 4 became Bowen (2) to back up Battier. Bowen only needs spot minutes anyway. I got a go-to scorer in Roy and solid scorers in Brooks, Scola, and Rudy. Solid defenders in Batttier/Bowen and Nene/Pryz.

gotta build a winner with the formula!

every title team has a certain makeup that’s consistent:

Starters:
1 dominant/go-to inside scorer
1 dominant/go-to perimeter scorer
long, athletic wing that can hit the 3 and defend
bruising inside guy to do the dirty work
point guard that can shoot, distribute, and keeps the turnovers down

Bench:
Combo guard that can cover either spot and offers a change of pace/different look from the starters
Versatile/athletic wing that does everything fairly well
Big man that can defend and not be a liability

with that in mind I present:

Starters

Jameer Nelson (4) can shoot, handle, and distribute, low turnovers
Brandon Roy (6) – the go-to perimeter scorer
Shane Battier (3) – great glue guy, primo defender, can hit the 3 and does all the intangibles
Chris Bosh (6) – the go-to/dominant inside scorer, with offense out to mid-range, good rebounder/defender
Joel Pryzbilla (2) – the enforcer, good rebounder and shot-blocker

Bench:
Jarret Jack (2) – can play PG but shoots well enough and has the size to play the 2, very good defender
Matt Barnes (2) – long/athletic defender, solid shooter and passer/ball handler, good energy
Channing Frye (2) – size to guard 5s or 4s, decent mid-range jumper, decent defender and rebounder

Okay, new twist.... Only one player per team

TEAM OF THE FUTURE

PG: Russell Westbrook (3)
SG: Courtney Lee (3)
SF: LeBron (7)
PF: Anthony Randolph (3)
C: Greg Oden (4)

Bench:
Jrue Holliday (2)
Chase Buddinger (2)
Marc Gasol (3)

My priorities:

1) Youth
The game is “building a franchise”. This also brings in the “potential” factor and allows me to use my judgement on young talent to build a potential dynasty.

2) Strength
Strong NBA players are good NBA players, generally. You can improve aspects of your game but if you’re not physically solid by nature it’s tough to compete with those who are, no matter how hard you work to get there. Not all my players are naturally strong, but they make up for it in other parts of their game.

3) LeBron
You have to take advantage of the option of putting LeBron on your team. He does EVERYTHING. You are a witness, whether you like it or not. He’s LeBron.

4) Role Players
The greatest teams have players that know their roles and execute them well. However, it is hard to pin down roles for young players.

5) Depth
Look at the #6-8 players of any NBA champion and you’ll see some big names. I believe my roster is very balanced and a very strong 8 man rotation.

Lebron and Oden

is scary good.

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

My team assuming i get to keep them for five years

PG (4) Calderon – Speed demon and good vision. A winner.
SG (6) Roy – Leadership baby, need! Killer instinct and desire to win, but cheaper than the 7’s.
SF (3) Batum – Speed and potential at only 19 years of age. Defensive ability and developing NBA scoring ability. Cuts like crazy when allowed.
PF (5) Aldridge – Gazelle on the break still growing and expecting a break out year.
C (4) Oden – Likely see him at year 2 or 3 breaking out. Year one he just looks more like a number one pick. If he’s in shape this team can run any team into the ground. His ability to pass while still ugly raw last year makes him even more deadly on the breaks as that will only improve as he becomes pretty to behold.

Bench:
Blake (2) Consistent and under control. will not cost you coming from the bench and competitive.
Korver (2) Decent at threes and adds a little dabble of things.
Pryz (2) – FREAKING CHEAP and you have a man that can fill in until Oden blossoms. Also has a high defensive intensity that won’t drop with Oden out.

I see a championship year by the third year and then domination.

Coaches:
Not a fan of the options but I take D’antoni. This is a fast break team that could likely make it.

At least the starters are

The bench are more conservative players. I really want Nate to coach.

So who's going to make the poll

Somebody needs to tabulate all the teams that follow the rules of the exercise so that the rest of us can vote for our favorite roster when all is said and done.

this is fun.

Chris Paul (7)
Brandon Roy (6)
Trevor Ariza (3)
Antonio McDyess (3)
Joel Przybilla (2)

and
Ty Lawson (2)
DeJuan Blair (2)
Mike Miller (2)

Przybilla and Miller are absolute steals – solid starters for 2 points! I wanted Millsap at 4 but ended up going with McDyess so that I could actually have enough points for a bench.

I have the best backcourt in the league.
