Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Is this just the beginning of a baseball-sized problem for the NBA? Their drug testing policy is usually pretty good, so hopefully not. I'm surprised it's Lewis, he's not a very muscular dude.

also makes you wonder if he has been training with any team mates? *cough*Dwight Howard*cough*

I've always assumed Dwight Howard used steroids.

I don’t have a problem with steroid and I don’t understand why other people do.

Steroids don't increase bulk

A certain kind of steroid increases bulk. “Steroid” is a whole group of hormonal suplements.

by JordanLeDoux on Aug 6, 2009 1:37 PM PDT reply actions

steroids?

“According to league sources, Lewis was taking nutritional supplements at the end of last season that unknowing to him contained a substance commonly known as DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) — a chemical compound made naturally in the body but also found in numerous over-the-counter supplements at nutritional stores.”

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/orl-rashard-lewis-positive-for-steroid-080609,0,675108.story

I don’t much about supplements, but I don’t think you can buy steroids over the counter.

by degro77 on Aug 6, 2009 1:38 PM PDT reply actions

And what's odd is that DHEA

Was actually an early version of what Viagra does. Disgusting I know but a lot bit screwed up.

Btw, athletes ARE banned from taking some over the counter drugs even if they would be legal for us due to the potential benefits.

"unknowing to him"

Maybe it’s just because of baseball, but I’m at the point where when I hear they didn’t know what they were putting in their bodies it makes me more suspicious. As for this being the tip of the iceberg, the NBA has more of a problem with players sitting around in the offseason smoking weed and coming into camp out of shape. When half the league “gain 20 pounds of lean muscle just by changing their diet” then you know you have a problem

Your confusing thesis has captured my attention. Tell me more.

by terryisntbald on Aug 6, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Their drug testing policy is pretty crappy, and a track and field athlete would be banned for 2 years now

It’s the next scandal waiting to happen. Now it begins. I already stated my opinion to this back in May when Dave discussed it. And I have to say I had Lewis on my list of the most suspect players partly due to some images from media day 2008 where he has very strange skin reactions. Maybe I’m wrong. But I have seen too many excuses.

I don't think the NBA has a drug scandal coming

Because I think the benefits of it (except for maybe Centers) are less than in other sports and thus they won’t risk it.

at the end of the regular season wasn’t lewis injured? he might have taken the banned substance in order to heal his injury quickly

by shoothoop on Aug 6, 2009 1:59 PM PDT reply actions

Not DHEA

DHEA has limited practical uses and if he DID need it he would have told the team doctor (since in most sports you can get a waiver if you have a legitimate need for a drug).

And they get waivers

To take needed drugs. I should know because my sister was an NCAA Swimmer (Division 3 mind you, so not a high level) with asthma and had to get special permission from the NCAA every year so she could take her needed meds.

In some sports they start to build blood profiles for all pro athletes in independent lab databases, since endurance athletes naturally have some different levels for e.g. hemoglobin that can go over textbook levels when they train at high altitudes. If you get too high, you at first get suspended only for the next few days to protect your health. Sprinters likely have markers that are different again. That’s a good method to detect sudden spikes that are likely unnatural.

The juicing to speed recovery from an injury

Is another aspect of it. Not sure what the “lag time” is to test clean but it is likely specific to each different drug[or hormone] in the spectrum and a guy could juice all summer with little risk of detection if he knew when to lay off it

by southern oregon on Aug 6, 2009 2:34 PM PDT reply actions

That's where unannounced training tests come into play

The NBA didn’t have those until fairly recently. And they have no profile of where athletes will be at a certain day. I don’t know about independent labs, the NFL doesn’t have those which is a farce.

Is anyone really outraged by this?

Usually NBA take performance decreasing drugs(e.g. weed)

by TappedPotential on Aug 6, 2009 8:01 PM PDT reply actions

It's true.

NBA players should probably be allowed to use roids to offset the grass.

But in all seriousness, is anyone really surprised? It was only a matter of time. For selfish reasons I hope the general public blows off any impending basketball steroid scandal much like it blows off steroids in the NFL (what? Merriman’s on roids? That’s cool, we’ll just give him the MVP trophy). But, from a broader standpoint, I hope that juicing isn’t that prevalent and those using either get caught and educated, or scared straight. Steroids may not have the potential to kill you almost instantly, like cocaine, but it’s pretty undeniable that they are extremely dangerous in the long term.

And am I the only one that immediately check Orlando’s schedule to see of they play the Blazers in the first 10 games of the season? Does that make me a bad person?

DHEA a steroid? That's a stretch.

DHEA occurs naturally in the body, so I don’t understand what a positive test implies. Very high levels of DHEA maybe? Or from one report it sounded like he had high testosterone levels. While it’s true that DHEA can somewhat increase testosterone, it’s normally very minor. If he did indeed have high testosterone, I suspect it was from something other than DHEA.

DHEA is a precursor to a lot of other human hormones. DHEA levels fall as we age, perhaps leading to various ailments. Many alternative doctors (and some orthodox ones) recommend DHEA to keep levels closer to what is normal for a young person. I’ve supplemented 50mg DHEA daily for some years and I doubt it has had little affect on my testosterone which remains at a level normal for my age. And I don’t think I’d get any argument when I say it certainly hasn’t bulked me up. I’m 6’0" tall and weigh 153 …. the same as I’ve been for years (even those years before I ever started taking DHEA).

I don’t think we got the full truth from Rashard.

This is already overblown

This is nothing like what’s happened in baseball. He didn’t test positive for HGH or some illegal steroid. That’s why he doesn’t look like it.

He tested positive for an ingredient called DHEA that was in an over the counter supplement he bought. Any of us can get this and it’s nothing like steroids, which is why it’s not illegal. I don’t know if he’s telling the truth or not, but it’s a lot more believable, in this case, that he might not have known the supplement included a banned substance. It was just a store bought supplement that has a laundry list of ingredients that most people would never try to read through. He made a mistake that I doubt he’ll make again, but this should never get confused with what players have been doing in baseball.
