Who Should have been the No. 1 pick in 2006
It is the poll question on ESPN.com right now. The link above is to the map of the US, if you want to vote just go to ESPN.com and click on the NBA link the poll is at the bottom of the page. It is interesting to note that in Massachusetts the voting right now is 48% for Roy 45% for Rondo... what a bunch of homers, even Doc Rivers doesn't like Rondo.
P.S. let me know if this is worth is as a fanshot... don't want to be taking up valuable sidebar space.

Why wouldn't it be worth a fan shot?
If people are short on sidebar space, they can increase the setting to show more.
If you are interested in it, someone else probably is, too.
When I rule the world, everyone will know how to use Excel.
Rondo, really?
He’s a good player but he ain’t Roy, he doesn’t have the leadership Roy has for one.

Yeah, but we are homer too.
I would put down GO in 2007. Most of the nation would disagree. I’d say Durant may be good, but GO brings things that are required for dynasties.
It’s not the same thing, but that is the idea, right?
*Unless KP has a secret plan that makes this statement incorrect.
so true... if they ran the 2007 draft question....
the Nation would be like:
90% Durant
6% Yi (you know the Chines would get on there)
2% Noah
1% Conley
1% Oden
With Oregon voting
90% Oden
What? Nooooo... No, no, no....
Durant is developing into a stunning player. Oden hasn’t done anything yet. Period. Nothing to impact more than a game or two last season. Some rebounds, not enough blocks for a mobile 7 footer, too many fouls.
He MIGHT someday bring some things that can help a team be much better. But unless he develops into an excellent shot blocker and excellent overall defender, then he is not dynasty material.
Right now it’s clear we made a mistake taking Oden, though he still could become important for the team and could be the 2nd best player in the draft. He just won’t be as impactful as Durant.
Play like your contract year was last year.

I'd say Durant's impact has been overrated.
23-59 in your second season is not exactly awe inspiring. Sure guy can score and put up stats. But so far he hasn’t brought wins to his team. Or defense for that matter.
Things certainly have to potential to change. I expect they will. But until the Thunder start winning some games, Durant is no more impactful that Zack Randolph.
That said, Oden hasn’t exactly shown himself to be that impact player yet either. Maybe both will get to shine a little more this coming year.
μὴ φοβοῦ, μόνον πίστευε.
oden on the thunder
Yeah but if Oden would be on the Thunder that year, they wouldn’t even get to 23 wins. First of, he couldn’t even play that season. And second, Durant had like 2 game-winning shots that year. Nooo way Oden could have done that.
oversea'er
It's not really fair to assess a players career
based on the years they were out with injury unless they are already retired
In ten years, we will have the content needed to determine if the blazers made the right choice. Given the more complicated methods of measuring team success, I’m not sure that durant’s game is ideal for a contender. I think Oden was the right pick because it would’ve been very hard to build a team that contends every year without a quality center. It can happen, but it would be very difficult. If Oden is routinely out with injury, we’ll know it was a mistake. IMO this is as premature as people assuming bill walton was a bust. Microfracture takes 2 years, and Oden will need time to shake off the rust and develop the skills that he is still learning because of his age.
sure
but so far we have enough content to say “so far, it looks like the blazers made the wrong choice. they would have preferred durant’s production to oden’s the last two years and would currently prefer durant be on the roster right now for the upcoming season.”
hopefully, that changes at some point this season… but i doubt it will.
What would Durant on the team do to Roy?
Our single biggest weakness two years ago was rebounding. Oden comes back, in limited minutes, and guess what, rebounding is now one of our greatest strengths. That’s not all Oden, but we didn’t see nearly the productiveness from Pryz without Oden.
Would I rather have Durant or Roy leading our team coming into this season?
Look at it like a diet; Oden’s whole grains and fruit. Durant is Cap’n Crunch Berries. One sure looks tastier right now, but what they do to your body after a while makes a difference too. It’s just whether you like the in your face snazziness of Durant and don’t mind the crash after, or whether you want your entire body to be healthy. One you notice right away. The other, you may never notice. Sort of how it is with high volume scorers and intangible bigs.

that's not homerism
that’s looking to the future instead of only as far as our nose.
Also, regardless, Oden will be the best player for us. Durant would have been a log jam. of course, this is assuming Oden can really play again.
Durant IS the best player now. He may not be in the future. I’d still be willing to bet on Oden.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

He may always be the better player
but that’s not exactly what matters. I argued last year that CP should be considered the best player because he improves his team more than anyone else. The common sentiment was that best player meant the guy that is the best all by himself. Who cares that BBall’s a team sport?!?!? With that as the definition of best, Oden will never be better than Durant. Luckily people are stupid and don’t realize the best players sometimes make a team terrible.

i will disagree that Oden will never be the "better" player
it just make take a couple more years to be able to showcase it.

Yeah but Roy
doesn’t have the cajones to slap someone upside the head if their going for a layup/dunk like Rando does.
That’s toughness!

there are more away fans in memphis than there are home fans...regardless of what team they are playing
"There are a few teams you have to watch out for in the fourth quarter."
"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters at the end of the third quarter with the Hornets leading 74-59. Portland later ends up winning 97-89.
"They don't mind him shooting that shot at all. Rudy Fernandez is not that great of a 3pt shooter."
-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

I would probably go Roy too but the argument could be made for LMA...
He is 6’11" and super athletic with great range. Has a way better injury history. Is what 3 or 4 years younger than Roy? There are a lot more guys that are great wings in the NBA than great posts (okay maybe this could be disputed). If I were a team like Miami I would probably go LMA over Roy… although then again the thought of Roy and Wade… holy cow. Anyway not trying to argue against Roy, just saying I can see the LMA argument.
EVERYONE, DON'T VOTE FOR ROY, VOTE FOR LAMARCUS.
Roy is the no-brainer choice. LaMarcus is the no-brainer runner-up in that list, not Rajon F. Rondo, who leads him 12% to 5%.
Brandon and LMA are splittig the Blazer vote
meanwhile, Danny Ainge has all of his relatives voting for Rajon, around the clock
When reached 39 years of following Portland basketball you have, be as passionate of the Trail Blazers you will not!

Sergio Rodriguez Remember the old westerns, when one cowboy would say, “Awfully quiet out here,” and the other cowboy would say “Yeah, too quiet,” and then one of the cowboys would take an arrow through his chest? It’s been awfully quiet about Sergio Rodriguez lately.
Vermont just went yellow for Rondo...
I’ll give them a pass because they are smoking some good weed up there. It is funny too how all of New England loves the Boston teams.
well, it is the region
kind of how the Oregon, Idaho and Alaska all lean toward the mariners and seahawks

true that... I think it was a smart move too by the Patriots to go with New England instead of whatever city they are in outside of Boston.
I am suprised more teams don’t take up state or regional names. I guess you Minnesota T’Wolves, Golden State Warriors, I think that is it for the NBA.
Don't forget...
the Salt Lake City Jazzes.
The cowards never started
The weak died along the way
Only the strong survived
They were the Trailblazers
doh... lol, I am probably missing something else.
Maybe the Blazers should be the Northwest Trailblazers now that Seattle doesn’t have a team. Perhaps before it should of been the Oregon and Southwest Washington Trailblazers.

Actually, out here in SE Idaho
Everyone is Rockies fans. Don’t ask me why. It’s stupid.
What a joke that Rondo is picked over Aldridge. No GM would take Rondo over Aldridge.
That’s what the hype machine does. If you play in a big market you get more exposure than a better player does in Portland.
Ah, well looks like Vermont is the only
State who wouldn’t take Roy. Look at all that purple :)
