58 wins

Stats and Thoughts:

Monthly breakdown, based on 08-09 records:
Oct .650 (3)
Nov .431 (16)
Dec .526 (15)
Jan .534 (15)
Feb .499 (13)
Mar .402 (13)
Apr .447 (7)
So, let’s hope for a quick start in October/November to propel us through the Dec/Jan rough patch, then try to go on a big March run.

West Non-Conference Schedule:
this is favorable to us
LAL 2 home, 1 away
San Antonio 2 home, 1 away
Phoenix 1 home, 2 away
New Orleans 1 home, 2 away
other 6 teams are all 2/2

if we can protect home court early it’s not inconceivable that we could go to New Orleans at 9-0

How did you guys win that?

This is the first thing I looked up

what differentiates temas schedule difficulty is which team do they only play 3 times. Well Douglast beat me to it (darn work), but as you can see the f team we only play 3 times this season are San Antonio, L@kers, Phoenix , and New Orleans. Therefore the Blazers schedule will be easier than most teams since these are all teams with winning records.

Last year was not as easy, which means we should be able to match last years record if not easily go into the 60’s. I love that if it comes down to a tie-break with LAL, we have the same advantage that Houston held over us last year.

by NWfan on Aug 4, 2009 1:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Does anyone know which team we played 3 times last season?

I know I can look it up (and will later), but if someone has the information already, it would be good for perspective. Information about other Western playoff teams this year and what team they play thrice would be good too, although I suspect I’ll have to do that one myself.

by amitp06 on Aug 4, 2009 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Last year

Dallas, Golden State, Houston, Sacramento.

I’ll post my analysis tomorrow (hopefully, work is suddenly hitting hard), and will try to mention who the other Western contenders have for three games. If I forget, remind me in the comments and I’ll post it.

My thoughts here

First Observations on the Blazers Schedule

by skywaker9 on Aug 4, 2009 11:20 AM PDT reply actions

My notes:

1. The “home” (and season) opener is against Houston slated for the American Airlines Arena in Miami, FL. Huh?

2. The November schedule looks fairly light so the Blazers need to get off to a flying start.

3. Their longest road stint is a five game trip in November involving Memphis, Minnesota, New Orleans, Charlotte and Atlanta.

4. December has a nasty stretch of two four game away trips with two home games (and a week) in between. The back end is a series of games against Orlando, Miami, Dallas and San Antonio. Ouch.

5. Christmas Day has a home game against Denver.

6. The season ends with two home games against OKC and Golden State. The defense will need to be good against these high scoring teams if the Blazers are in a last minute battle for seeding.

I like the Blazers for a similar record to last season. I voted for 55-57 wins.

1. Is an errror

Press releases for both teams say its at the RG and the RG schedule is clear that day.

Given that every single home game will be sold out

There is no way the Blazers would give up that $.

all teams that have alot more experience in deep playoffs. id love it but im not betting any of my money on that. experience is huge, i finally came to admit that to myself last year.

60+ wins guys?

yeeesh. to me teams just dont always get better and better. sometimes they stagnate. jazz were up and coming when they made conference finals a couple years ago and so were hornets.

sometiems injuries and just random stuff happens and maybe west is harder this year. i looked at okc and other teams and thought: those wont be easy wins. to me id be happy with same amount of wins as last year with being a little more competative in the playoffs.

by mandoman10 on Aug 4, 2009 11:27 AM PDT reply actions

I’d be happy if they managed an identical record. I’d take that if a djinn offered that to me pre-season over the chance to improve.

Anyone know when the mini packs will be announced?

Curious to know what games I’ll get with my 1/4 season “Weekend” pack.

Houston, Utah, Lakers, & Cleveland

1/4 Season Weekend Pack just purchased.

So 3 weekday games added then?

Rubio, trades, or free agency.

They'll send an e-mail out next week

But they have more than enough weekend games, even if you drop either or both Laker games and the Cleveland game. I think they may also consider “Thursday” as the “Weekend”.

Also, I think the 11 games includes 1 pre-season game.

The Weekend 1/4 Season

Thurs: Denver, Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas
Fri: San Antonio, Memphis, Denver, LAL, Orlando, Boston, Wash, Dallas
Sat: Minn, Houston, GS, LAL
Sun: Minn, Cleveland, Toronto

Worst Case:
1x Pre-Season
2x Minn
1x Memphis
1x Wash
1x GS
1x Toronto
1x Phoenix
1x Houston
2x Other

Still, I like the odds.

from Mike Barret's Blog
Last season you probably heard us talk so often about Portland constantly catching teams on the second of back-to-back sets. This happened 27 times, and the Blazers were a staggering 23-4 in these games. Needless to say, it’s a huge plus to catch a team that is tired. This season, the Blazers will only meet teams playing the second of a back to back 14 times. That’s a huge difference.

This might be more significant than we realize

How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

by douglast on Aug 4, 2009 11:29 AM PDT reply actions

Although a lot of those games

Were our ridiculous comebacks (like vs. Indiana, down 19, etc.) and so if we can do a better job of not falling behind big this should not be a serious issue.

"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely

by skywaker9 on Aug 4, 2009 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions

when you consider "comeback" could well mean: other team ran out of gas

that is a significant note. The problem with all our “improved record over last year” hopes, is that it tends to look at the positives (Oden better, Miller, more experience) without considering whatever negatives, such as this. So, I am thinking maybe a bit (few games) better than last year is fair hope. But we need some good fortune, particularly health. With health, we are definately dangerous.

by Cablinasian on Aug 4, 2009 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions

After reading Barrett's blog I am thinking 54 wins....

much tougher schedule this year, don’t catch near as many teams on the second inight of back-to-backs.

by Escrote on Aug 4, 2009 11:41 AM PDT reply actions

Well..

We only play the Lakers 3x this year and two of those are in the Rose Garden.

Also, I’m loving that we have 18 games on national TV this year and 10 of them are at home! All of our games vs. Denver are on national TV. I absolutely have to see Cleveland this year with Shaq. Looks like an exciting schedule! I can’t wait for the season to start. My guess is 56-68 wins by the way. I think even with a tougher schedule, Miller and (hopefully) an improved Oden will net us +2-4 wins.

Regarding Hedo Türkoğlu:

Look at the bright side, Blazers fans -- you dodged a bullet. He peaked statistically two years ago. He's allegedly 30 but could be closer to 32 or 33 for all we know. (Do you trust Turkish birth certificates? And isn't it weird that he played four years of pro ball in Turkey in the 1990s?)

Season defining games..

Rough back-backs all on the road:

Toughest trip by far next year..

  • 12/18 & 12/19 vs. Orlando and then Miami
  • 12/22 & 12/23 vs. Dallas and San Antonio

(That’s 4 games in 5 days.. in one road trip all vs. playoff teams from last year..)

  • 1/29 & 1/30 vs. Houston & Dallas
  • 1/22 & 1/23 vs. Boston & Detroit

17 games on national tv

wow, of course they do this the first time I get league pass, but great to see espn and what not sees what’s up

by StocktonNEP on Aug 4, 2009 12:01 PM PDT reply actions

Probably more than that

I have a feeling some of ours will be picked up by ESPN/ABC late in the year since they pick games late that are important.

A lot of people like watching the Blazers

A young and talented team with some fun players to watch (Roy, Rudy, Aldridge) as well as the greatest question mark in the NBA: Greg Oden.

Something about reaching 61+ wins

It just seems like such a mysterious number, kind of odd to me. I feel like its the measuring stick between teams that are “There” and teams that are trying to make it “There”

THE BACK-TO-BACKS ARE THE BIGGEST DEAL

As Barrett wrote in his blog, we caught a ton of games last year whrre the opponent was coming off of another game the night before. It happened 27 times last year and we were 23-4 in those games.\

That number is significantly down this season. I’m not saying we can’t win those games if the team is fully rested/at full strength, but it’s all that much easier when they are a bit tired out

by rip_city_swagger on Aug 4, 2009 12:15 PM PDT reply actions

How "significantly" is down?

If you happen to know the number…

Indeed it is

I still have full confidence in our team to go out there every night and throw everything they have at their opponent. They’ll be fine.

I can't wait for the weekend of January 8-10...

First on January 8 the L*kers come to town.
Then on January 10 Lebron comes to Portland.

Those are 2 games that you can count me in on.

They just reached a deal over ESPN360 and ESPNU, both of which they had been fighting with Disney on for years.

No way they'd all be on KGW

NBC would have their heads for interrupting their prime-time programming too often.

by AverageJon on Aug 4, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I think KGW said

That NBC allows networks a certain number of nights a year that they can interrupt for local programs. Most of those tend to be weekend games for that reason, lower rated shows are replaced by higher-rated games.

54 wins seems easily attainable

I voted for for 60 wins though because none of the teams on the schedule this year scare me! I counted 15 games I thought we would lose and added another 7 loses for fudge factor. That lands me at an even 60. Rip City!!

TNT is announcing a delay for all 7:30 games

While we wait for “very funny” commercials to finish, and Chuck tell us all about the previous game. We will now switch over to a game in progress ca. in the 2nd quarter.

No what's the worst

Is that they actually delay the start of the game until the first one finishes. At the Houston game, the famous B-Roy game in November last year, it didn’t start until 7:45-7:50 because of that.

See generally I would rather they start the game

Because most of the time you only miss the first few minutes. That’s what ESPN does.

Dead air risk

If you’re watching a game that starts at 5 PM, there is a very good chance that it ends before 7:30 (or very close to it). Therefore they’d have 30 minutes to fill and risk losing casual fans who don’t want to wait out the break between games.

19 Back-To-Backs not so bad?

According to this handy-dandy little report by Mr. Blogfather:

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-43-9/Lessons-from-the-Schedule.html

Only 8 teams have a fewer number of back-to-back games in the league. Also, with most of the sets Portland plays involving the stronger team first, it doesn’t look so bad at all.

Yes! Yes! In the face!

by LeafHawk on Aug 4, 2009 1:05 PM PDT reply actions

Here are the teams

New York Knicks 18
Boston Celtics 18

Miami Heat 18
Cleveland Cavaliers 18
Oklahoma City Thunder 18
San Antonio Spurs 17
New Orleans Hornets 16

Just another reason to think the Blazers could be very good this year, their schedule is very favorable.

The first 3 games..

At home vs. Houston
At home vs. Denver
On road vs. Houston

Those first 3 games are pivotal if you ask me. Yao Ming or not, they were both playoff contenders. We need to get the bad taste out of our mouths regarding the Rockets too.

For the record,

60 wins is what I came up with when I went through the schedule game-by-game.

Regarding playing fewer teams playing on the second night of a back-to-back: some fairly large studies of this suggest its worth about 2 points. The Blazers won 6 games in during the entire season by 2 or fewer points or after OT in 82 games. So, a rough estimate is that playing teams on the second night of a back-to-back 13 fewer times will probably costs the Blazers 2 wins or so. Only playing the Lakers and Spurs once away each probably makes up for that.

by PoliSam on Aug 4, 2009 2:29 PM PDT reply actions

Hey Ben...

…the first poll option really ought to be “45 or fewer”.

Or better yet, get that option out of there altogether. This team is going to roll.

thiink about it

we lost a lot of BS games Philly twice, Clips, OKC, the hedo bank, the cavs game, all our OT games we lost. With exp we can win those and be at 60 win team

by FrenchToast on Aug 4, 2009 4:07 PM PDT reply actions

New York too

They had a foul to give, probably should have used it.

by GMan83201 on Aug 4, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

More games we shouldn't have won

Hornets when Chris Paul went down.

Spurs when Tim Duncan was trying to play through an injury and Popovich wouldn’t let him back in the game.

Knicks in NY and Wizards in DC, both of which should have beaten us but just collapsed late.

And there were a lot more injury-depleted opponents and iffy wins.

Is to win more of those BS games than lose them.

No more Sunday afternoon games

Last year, the Blazers’ tix office told me they practically begged the league for more Sunday afternoon games. This year, all our Sunday home games are at 6:00 or 7:30. Even the xmas game is 7:30.

Not one single day game for the kids on the whole schedule. Disappointing. Maybe they’ll stop bothering to sell those pesky kid size jerseys, too.

Heh..

Have you SEEN what the Blazer dancers wear and how they dance? That’s not even mentioning the drunk idiots and people yelling obscenities at the floor. I feel bad for ushers. That’s a rough job. I mean I love all of these things personally, but I’m 32. Sometimes I wonder how on earth dads take their pre-teen sons to these games. The entertainment is really suited for adults or at least young teenagers. I’d definitely rate Blazer games as a PG-13 experience. Heh. For the Sunday afternoon games, was everything the same in terms of dancers, serving beer and such? That’s probably a stupid question but eh, maybe it is.

Don't forget the ear-shattering sound effects and music

I’m not judging people who take small kids to these games, but it’s definitely something I wouldn’t do. If nothing else it can’t be good for their ears. I find it painful and I’m an adult.

“Were our ridiculous comebacks (like vs. Indiana, down 19, etc.) and so if we can do a better job of not falling behind big this should not be a serious issue.”

Yes this year I’d like to not have to see them dig themselves out of a deep hole night after night.

And as they hold their own early in the game I also want to see them not let up.

Having more players than available minutes may help motivate them to keep up their intensity.

Although, in the long run, I think their player glut will lose them a few players who decide that their career is better served by being a starter on a crappy team rather than sitting on the bench all game long on a championship contender.

58/59

Hopefully be happily surprised like last year. Breaking it down…

19 back to backs (38 games). Of those, 30 are away. Of those 30 b2b away games, 17 are at ’09 playoff teams. I give us 20-18.

10 stand-alone away games. Of those only 1 is a Western playoff team. I give us 6-4.

34 stand-alone home games. I give us two losses (CLE) 33-1.

Total: 59-23
Home: 39-2 (CLE, S.A.)
Away: 20-21

Einstein says: The key to 60+ is winning away from home.
