Very nice videos!!
I like how often there are about 2-3 defenders in his immediate vicinity looking up at him with the body language of “Go ahead and dunk it Mr. Oden, sir. I’m just here to collect the ball after it goes through the hoop. What’s that? Am I trying to play defense on you? No, no. Not me sir. I’m just trying to give my superiors the impression I’m trying to play defense on you in the key. Carry on.”
Seriously, once he is 5 ft and in, there aren’t many groups of 2 defenders that can stop him consistently. We’ll see how an extra year out of surgery and a summer full of leg strengthening treats him. My bet is he gives the league what for.

great video. I love seeing Greg do well and I think this next year is really going to be a big one for him. If he has a silky jump hook and some spring to his step – watch out.

Last part of second video.
We get to see Nellie asking for a travel after his guy just jumped on Oden’s shoulder.
What I like about how I see them reffing Oden is that they do let people get in his space in the post a bit. The reason I like it is because you also see them letting him do the same thing. The more physical it gets, the better it is for Oden. There aren’t many people in the NBA that can handle that.

one way to tell hes not a bust
is that he has more highlights in one year than Kwame brown, Bogut, bargnani (maybe) in their whole careers, oh and olowakandi
Trade for Luis Amundson!!Do it KP!!

The only thing Dwight really has on him (when Greg is 100%) is
durability and confidence. dwight howard doesnt have much offensive skill either but he still gets over 20 ppg. dont see why greg cant, even though he won need to
Roy, Aldridge, Oden, Rudy, Batum, Outlaw, Webster, Bayless, Blake, Miller, Joel... Holy crap!

He is probably still the most athletic center (speed and hops)
But Greg is bigger. So when both are fully healthy it’s interesting.

only reason greg will never avg 20ppg
is the Blazers. They really are pushing him as “just play defense”, when he could be so much more if they just teach him. He is a work a holic gym rat and soaks up bball knowledge like a Sham Wow. Teach him some basic post moves to go with the jump hook, while refining that hook as his staple and he will easily avg 20ppg in the NBA. But I fear the Blazers won’t ever do that as they have Roy and LMA as their main scorers and don’t really need him to, so they won’t even try. Kinda sad really, letting that kind of potential just rot.
If Oden was taking by the Thunder, he would have avg 20ppg by season 2 or 3 for sure, practice and coaching is all he needs. Although Miller will help him a ton as well.

I think you are misreading things
He’s been working with Bayno this summer. I doubt they are just working on defense.
They are saying they want him to “just play defense” to keep the pressure off, because that is where he can best contribute immediately. But I guarantee they are working on his low post offense. This kid could score 25-30 per game in future. That probably won’t happen because we have so many offensive threats, but I expect we’ll see a lot of 20 point games out of him by next year, if not this year.
Look for Greg to be a key part of our offense by the middle of next year, at the latest.

He just gets points too easy
Especially for how much of an offensive game he lacks.
Just too big, long, athletic, and too nice of a touch. Forces everyone to foul him.
He won’t be a Hakeem-esque offensive dynamo, but he’ll be an important scorer for the next decade and more.

And it would be a mistake
to assume that all the comments about just needing him to defend mean anything.
KP and Nate know what he can do offensively. He went for 25 against Florida’s juniors and seniors as a freshman. When you have an opportunity like that, you develop it. Bill Bayno has NOT spent all summer teaching Greg how to block shots.

Wow
Oden looks terrific in the Houston series. Just some plays really BLASTED my mind away like at 3:16 for the second video. Look how high he jumps for that monster jam. What’s more, look at Oden and how excited he is at some plays. Clearly not the morose and emo player that he apparently was. But then again, this is highlight video.
The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

If we get 28 mpg out of Greg
we are going to steamroll a lot of teams.

A few specific thoughts
1. Hopes that Jerryd is learning what’s needed. On one drive, he got in trouble, and threw the ball up in Greg’s general direction. That’s it, Jerryd, drive the lane, throw the ball somewhere near Greg, and hope. That should be good for 3-4 apg. :)
2. On a more serious note, Greg swats too many shots. The big swat makes highlights, but it also gives back possession too often, either because it went out of bounds or because it went back out so far that the opponents were always going to get it. Catch those balls if possible, and if not, tip them up into the air — you’ll own them if you do that. Try to increase the number of blocks that turn into possessions.
3. Greg catches the ball so well when he’s on the move. Please, please, please run a lot of pick and roll with Andre, and let our other points and wings catch the vision. Don’t give Greg time to think about putting it on the floor, just hand him the ball on the way to the hoop so all he has to do is catch and dunk.
4. Last year, it was about getting LMA untracked in the first. This year, I hope we get some plays early for Greg, it will open up all kinds of problems for the opponent (as well as probably create foul trouble for them). The main thing Greg needs is confidence, a few quick scores early will help that.

Thank God for Andre Miller.
1.) Someone should stick Andre’s locker right next to Bayless. Make them sit together on the bus too.
2.) Howard does the same thing. It’s so annoying the way they smack the ball out of bounds and then smile. You basically just turned it over buddy.
3.) Thank God for Andre Miller.
4.) Hopefully he comes out of the gate strong. If his confidence gets rolling early he could be an all-star next season easy.
by Nick Van Excellent on Aug 31, 2009 7:34 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good points
1) But more imporantly, make them sit together in front of the screen watching game film for hours at a time. Although I expect Jerryd will be more than willing to do that.
2) It does have intimidation impact. If a guy just tips your shot and then catches it, it doesn’t quite have the same emotional effect on you as being erased. But that is an intangible, and I would rather have the tangible possession that may lead to an easy basket at the other end.
3) Yes, indeed.
4) Agreed.

A good strong block sends a message
to the opposing players that makes them think twice about bringing the ball into the paint when Oden is there. His thunderous blocks create momentum and energy and get everyone (fans, players) pumped up. Momentum is a big part of the game and those blocks always turn it in our favor.
And I don’t know about your athletic abilities, but it is damn hard to directionally block a shot in a real game of basketball, if he starts thinking about grabbing shots out of the air or trying to block-pass the ball to teamates we will see a lot more fouls and a lot fewer blocks.
Send ’em to the bleachers Greg!

Yeah, it is all Darryl Morey's fault.
Now we know the statistical value of a long block is not good.
But you are also correct that a long block has intangibles too.

Yes, I mentioned that message
And yes, I know it is hard to directionally block a shot. But it can be super-effective, and some guys have learned to do it.
The main thing is to learn that you don’t have to smack it hard to do the job, and by not smacking it so hard, you keep the ball in play. If the ball is in play, one of two things happen — either your team recovers the ball (better than knocking it out of bounds, obviously) or the other team does, and the shot clock keeps running (also better than knocking it out of bounds).
If the ball is knocked out of bounds and the other team scores on the possession, it ends any momentum boost you got. And Greg is going to block enough shots that other teams will be aware — if you go down the lane, Oden is going to be waiting, and you better have an answer. He doesn’t have to knock the ball out of bounds to send that message.
A running team can turn blocked shots into easy baskets — but not if they are swatted into the seats every time.

I haven't done a study of Greg's rookie season
but in college he was praised for keeping his blocks in play, and not doing “monster blocks into the stands”.

When FreeDarko includes him in a future edition of the basketball almanac his symbols should look something like this

Opposing players and fans will start to hate that dunk and leg kickout. Of course the clips could be edited down, but even finding 10 minutes of highlights isn’t bad for a rookie on tired legs. And that’s not including a number of big rebounds if they didn’t lead to his own dunks or putbacks.

cannot wait cannot CANNOT WAIT
for the season to start. These videos got me way too excited, and increased greatly my faith in GO. He has the strength and athleticism – he’s just gotta learn skills, and he’ll be a very, very good center at the worst.
I mean, he can back down almost anyone, he’s working on more jump hook moves and stuff, he moved his feet pretty well last year at times (offensively)…it’s only going to get better. I’m rooting for GO to get 28 mpg, so he can average a double double and get some of those monster dunks on sportscenter nightly.
I’m so irrationally excited.

confused...
You see plays like these from Oden and you wonder why he struggled to enjoy himself in his rookie season. I realize there is more to life than sports… but DANG… how many of us dream daily of being able to dunk on, or swat, someone in a real, live NBA game?? Come on, Greg… this has GOT to be fun for you. Imagine if he takes the natural ability he has, and the talent he has already shown on the court, and develops an insatiable passion for the game… wow, we’ll have a basketball monster in our own backyard.
Also, I did notice something very positive from these highlights… even though they are highlights, and therefore a montage of everything good he did while ignoring obvious discrepencies in his game. However, Greg Oden, in his rookie season, was a dynamic post player. In his first year in the league, he already developed the ability to post up from both sides of the basket… finished with both hands… and went to both the middle and the baseline in order to score. You have to feel good about that… despite the raw form he showed throughout the year and the inability to stay on the court due to foul trouble.
It’ll all come together.

He got down on himself because he said "dang, I'm 7 foot tall and about never lost a game in my life, I should be able to put up 10 and 10 like a #1 pick and instead I have to talk about my injuries."
He really said something like that in an interview. Not verbatim, but that was his train of thought. Maybe the most pissed I have seen him was when Craig Sager interviewed him during the rookies-sophomores game where he wanted desperately to play but couldn’t because he had just bumped knees with Maggette. He wanted to show what he could do on the national stage and among his peers, and instead was sitting in the audience again.

I am so glad to see this
It just reminds me how great he can be. I am really hoping we see the real Greg Oden this year. I love watching him give the shoulder to Garnett and seeing Kevin’s knees start to buckle. That happened a few times last year and you just knew he was going to be a beast if he could combine that with some grace and nimble footwork. This year is going to be very exciting. I can not stand the wait at all. How much to put me in a drug induced coma until october 6th?

I'm the gloomy gus I guess
But even in highlights, his good plays seem haphazard and clumsy. Most of those plays were dunks when he was not guarded at all. I still like the guy and love his dunks but… man, it’s just not there. He doesn’t look like a basketball player yet, just a really big athletic guy without much court sense who learned to dribble and pivot. Eric Dampier on a really good day is unfortunately looking more and more likely. (Damn you Bill Simmons!)
I would appreciate it if someone remembers to throw this back in my face if he has a monster year.
