Junk Drawer-August 3rd, 2009

So I decided to make this since I was on at like 4am and I noticed that there was no junk drawer. I don't really have much to say, so I'll just ramble on and let the junk take on its own course.

I did finish up some new paintings. This one is like 30x30 or 40x40 in real life, I haven't measured it. Just saying that because it feels a lot different in person.

I did another one as well but that was more or less just a quick little sketch. That I did in like 30-40 minutes. You can see it on my flickr page though. I'm working on another which I think is going to be my best of the summer but we'll see.

As far as other off topic conversation starters:

Do you feel like beauty if too often misconstrued as purely sexual in nature? And that gender roles limit how freely you can discuss the subject?

Dreams. How often do you have dreams? Do you think they mean anything, or do you think they are spontaneous and random in nature?

I think that’s great. Usually you don’t hear people say this until 2 pm. We love us some JD.

I'm digging those paintings of yours, especially the first one

I especially like the first one because it connects on a personal level.

First question

Do you feel like beauty if too often misconstrued as purely sexual in nature? And that gender roles limit how freely you can discuss the subject?

Yes, this happens wayyyy too much. I don’t find myself too caught up in sexualizing beautiful women, but let’s be honest, it happens. I think out on the street I’m more likely to just think a girl is beautiful and leave it at that whereas if I’m watching TV I’ll it’s more likely that I will sexualize her beauty.

I think gender roles play a huge role is discussing beauty. Men specifically are far less likely to be comfortable talking about an attractive man than women are talking about an attractive woman.

"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"

by Magnum on Aug 3, 2009 2:38 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I find it slightly different, I’m much more likely to sexualise a young woman of the same age than an older beautiful woman on the street. Randy teenager syndrome? Yet I am much less likely to sexualise someone on television as television is such a passive activity for me that I simply switch off.

Second question

Dreams. How often do you have dreams? Do you think they mean anything, or do you think they are spontaneous and random in nature?

I’m pretty sure everyone dreams every night, but not everyone remembers their dreams and you don’t remember all of your dreams. I dream pretty much every night and usually have a good memory of what happened. My dreams tend to be influenced by something that happened that day. So, if I was talking to a college friend on the phone for a while she’ll probably be in my dream. I think that is their only meaning. Dreams tend to reflect what you’ve been thinking about lately. Of course, it doesn’t always happen that way.

And do you ever notice that when someone tells you about their dream they ALWAYS say, “I had the weirdest dream last night”. Dreams are always weird and if they weren’t you certainly wouldn’t be telling anyone about them.

Your work is great Dheepan, I like the colors and strokes on both of those. The first one looks a bit like a sycophant.

Even if that doesn’t become your profession it can always be an artistic outlet – and a second source of positive feedback and maybe revenue :)

Lars Ulrich is a successful musician, but he made painting into more than a hobby. Same with some other artists.

This is great work Dheepan.

I love the sensuous, fleshy tones of the background that reflect, accentuate and surround the focus of the first painting. But the second painting is powerful, powerful, powerful. The guy shows such a fierce intelligence. At first you think he’s looking over your right shoulder and then you realize he’s staring you right in the face. Who is he?

As far as dreaming, I have had lucid dreams all my life. I think it’s because I had lots of extremely vivid nightmares when I was a kid and as self defense I just taught myself to understand that I was dreaming. I don’t have so many nightmares now but I still have lucid dreams all the time.

I have a strange one that occurs every few months. It starts out with me walking along a cliff with all of my relatives and family. Then a giant, living wheel emerges out of a cave. It chases us along the cliff and the feeling I get during the dream is one of pure terror. It’s just the feeling of dread and a feeling that I assume you get when you realize you’re about to die. Not sure why I get that dream/nightmare.

Love.

I used to as a kid have several different dreams recur and be able to remember them.

Now as an adult, I occasionally do but rarely remember them. Funny thing about it is that I can’t tell you what they are about and only realize they are recurring when I am having them. Which leads to a sort of lucid dream cuz I know what the outcome will be but some how have no control over it. It is very strange…

I remember reading/watching something about sleep and dreams. If you don’t remember or don’t have any then you are getting inadequate sleep or insufficient REM sleep. I have always been a light sleeper but now have a very young daughter (<2). I rarely remember any dreams anymore.

truth is beauty and beauty is truth

I was thinking about how we sometimes hold onto beauty (per the heading). This line is from Keats’s Ode on a Grecian Urn. I’m not really versed in Keats (I sort of despise him for the fact that he died at 26 and I’m now 27), but I do know this work fairly well—this line I’ve meditated upon a few times.

I think I try to pretend that Beauty is a high concept like truth. I however, use it when convention requires—mostly in the telling of a woman she’s beautiful. I think a woman would rather I call her beautiful with sentiment, than know with certainty that which I mean. It’s a confusing operation, but if one wants to stave off an empty bed, they best go with the flow…

Perhaps….my wife used to fish for compliments from time to time. I am a bit stubborn regarding this. One day she asked the prototypical question…….“do these pants make me look fat?” …..my answer: " It is not the pants". Of course I got a shocked response …..and laughter (thank goodness). The point being, I tell my wife that I love her every single day (I tell my kids as well). Also when she does get a complement from me, she knows it is sincere.

Marriage seems like the grounds where one can say these things in sincerity. I however, have never been married, but am not a virgin of saying these compliments. I’ve even said them after prefacing with “I don’t really know even what this word means”. Let me tell you, nothing is colder than the look one gets when you say “I can’t say I love you, ‘cause I don’t know what ‘Love’ is”. They say it’s all about compromise—what they don’t tell you, is that a lot of it is compromise with yourself and your own values…

Ahhh....Love

Well….we were talking about truth and beauty and you had to bring up love. I doubt I can define it in any meaningful way.

BTW …..Marriage is definitely about compromise …..I am not so sure about love. I suspect that part of successful marriages come from finding someone who you have enough in common with that it minimizes (but doesn’t eliminate) the amount and importance of the compromises that you need to make as a couple. I would say …..don’t buy the whole opposites attract biz…..find some common ground. Lastly to find out love is….listen to a lot of power ballads ….especially Foriegner. Good luck

I'm in my early 20's

so it’s not like I really know what I’m talking about, but I agree with you that successful marriage doesn’t have to be about love at all…there’s a lot of psychological research showing that marital satisfaction has been significantly higher among arranged-marriage couples living in the U.S. compared to marriages where the people married of their own free will. Lots of arguments you could make there, but one of them is certainly the idea that love isn’t all that central to having a successful marriage.

Do you really mean that?

I compromise literally dozens of times a day — on where we’re going to eat, what we’re going to watch, whether to turn the air conditioning higher or lower. I’m not just talking about romantic relationships here, but also your everyday interactions you have with other people.

In fact, I’d go so far as to argue that our whole society is based on the notion of compromise. If everybody went around demanding their way right now and brooked no argument about it, our lives would grind to a halt.

Suppose you wanted to watch some TV. Think about all the factors that go into that experience: When you are going to watch it? You can’t stay up late—you have work in the morning. Do you watch it w/ a beer? A slice of pizza (can your figure really take a six pack and half a pizza)? On your computer, or on your TV? Will you sit in a chair, or on a sofa? Will you turn your phone off?—can you account for interruptions? There is so much negotiating just with yourself and your environment—and we’re not even talking about another will involved in this—which has an equal number of influences upon your experience. A pure experience, aligned to your will I think is harder to find than we suspect.

I could imagine something like being at a baseball game, with a beer at your feet, a dog in your hand, the smell of the grass, noise of the crowd, sunlight on your face, a light breeze—all of it to come together for one moment, where nothing more is desired. A brief instant of bliss. That’s probably closer to what I was thinking about.

by EvilKaramazov on Aug 3, 2009 11:19 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I see what you're saying

in that light, I agree with you. All the better for my argument that compromise is certainly not “just another way of bending to someone’s will.” At least, not with the negative connotation that implies.

I think there is a lot to be said about some kind of master/slave roles any relationships though. I for one, do not subscribe to equality—but we might lie about that (as a compromise).

by EvilKaramazov on Aug 3, 2009 11:31 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Generally, but not in a bad way neccesarily

Compromise consists of this discussion “you want to do Y, I want to do X… so we’ll do Z” where Z is either X,Y or something in between. If X is chosen, you have bent to my will, if Y is chosen, I have bent to yours… if something in between X and Y is chosen, then we have each bent a little to each others wills. It’s a cynical way of looking at it, but it’s how it works

I guess it was just your use of "bend to someone's will"

that didn’t ring true with me. That has such indisputably negative connotations, like you’re weaker for having done so, and that’s not the light in which I see compromise at all. But it doesn’t sound like you see compromise in a negative light either.

favorite quote of the day from DenverStiffs.com. Random commenter, not the lead blogger.

We can still probably afford a decent big. I’d love to see Martin coming off of the bench with Nene starting at the 4. To do that, we’ll need a 5 with good post defense, great athleticism, and some kind of back-to-the-basket game. Tell the brain trust to call up Chicago and ask about Tyrus Thomas.

Uh…. Link

While you're on the phone, also ask about something that makes him grow 2 inches

And what they would like back in return (although it’s likely he won’t get the QO next year to max their cap space).

the best part about Denver fans is thinking that Linas Kleiza is enough to get a Marc Gasol or something similar. He’s the only trade chip they’re willing to let go of, but they seem to expect a gold mine. Maybe you could say the same for us… but our assets are better than Kleiza.

We could offer Bayless for him to complete the circle (KP traded him and another player on draft night for Jack)

Though I would rather offer Cunningham and a second round pick :)

we're about as delusional a fan base there is

when it comes to overvaluing the bounty that our players would bring back in a trade. I read three days ago on this site that B-Roy was indisputably a better player than Chris Paul and Pritchard would not even entertain the thought of making that trade, so I can’t judge other fans too harshly (even Nuggets fans…) for committing the same sin.

I wonder what percentage of BE users are “Moms who have completed some college credits and are looking to return to school”. Point-one percent? Less? I had a dream last night

that I accidentally killed one of Stringer and Avon’s soldiers and the Barksdales were coming after me so I got Brother Mouzone to protect me. It was pretty cool.

The coolest dream I ever had was when I was the general of an army that was attempting to seize some kind of sacred sword from its burial place on Mt. Hood. I commanded ornithopters, squadrons of angels, and elves because my army was some kind of amalgamation of The Golden Compass and Lord of the Rings. It was awesome and I was devastated when I woke up.

What was your style?

I hated blue because it was too passive and green because it was too vulnerable to all of black’s creature destruction stuff and green didn’t have enough flyers/shadow/first strikers for my taste. Red was good but subject to major inconsistency depending on whether you got the mana to throw down your big direct damage spells.

I really liked white and black — white because you could play lots of cheap creatures with good abilities for limited mana and just swarm them to death, and same for black with the added bonus of any non-black creatures summoned by your opponent were as good as toast. My favorite deck ever was a tweaked Megrim-based deck…it’s always fun when you make somebody discard to death.

/enddork

The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.

by BlazersOrBust on Aug 3, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I had a few good ones...

Early in my career, a red/green/black channel-fireball type that allowed me to draw many cards from my library to find the channel and fireball (sylvan library among others). Otherwise I just threw cheap direct damage (lightning bolts, chain lightning, etc.). I didn’t have much defense cuz I was going for the quick kill. I think everyone had one of these early on.

I also had a blue/white/green time warp deck without the time warp. I used stasis and time elementals to slow my opponent(s) down until I could hammer away with Serra angels. It took a lot of mana to get it all going but was especially fun in a multi player game.

I too had the discard deck with a blue/black focus. I used Sengir vampires and swampwalkers along with those imps or something (i can’t remember) that make you discard when hit.

Wow! That was a while ago…I still have a ton of Arabian Nights, betas, and such. Just stuck ‘em in a box in the attic and haven’t seen ’em in a while!

"Do me a favor. Put your lip over your head... and swallow." Max Goldman

Ooh

that blue/white/green time warp deck sounds nasty. I bet you were the bane of people’s existence with that combo…whenever we would play multiplayer games and somebody had some deck that was gonna be an utter PITA if it got rolling, we’d unload on him rapid-fire.

Sengir vampires and Serra angels are really cool cards…I only had one of the latter and two of the former. I stopped playing once they started incorporating all the new abilities around the time Sixth Edition came out. What the heck is phasing anyway? Get rid of that nonsense!

The Michael Ruffin of BlazersEdge, cuz Amlmart said so.

by BlazersOrBust on Aug 3, 2009 12:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No idea what phasing is!

I stopped an expansion or two after 4th edition…They started tightening up the crazy interpretations of rules, banning certain cards (why did they issue them in the first place?), and duplicating effects across all the colors…I played a couple of years ago with my ‘old’ decks with a guy who had newer cards and didn’t have a clue about those new abilities.

Multi player was a lot of fun especially with teams. I could get some protection with the time elemental deck from my teammates. Instilled energy on my elves and birds of paradise was the key to having mana…

I also ran a colorless juggernaut deck that was a lot of fun but dangerous to one’s self.

The Los Angeles Clippers would waive Greg Buckner, release Shawne Williams, and use Kris Humphries as a third-string power forward behind Blake Griffin and Craig Smith.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, the Dallas Mavericks can’t trade for Marcin Gortat ‘til 7/13/2010, so that’s a no-go.

Microsoft is to Yankees Fans as Apple is to Red Sox Fans. I used to support Red Sox fans as they were the antidote to the evil empire. Now with their winning and whatnot, Red Sox fans have become model Yankee Fans, and I lump the two together as some kind common monster… Apple has become some kind of Tyrant with its apple store and iPhones.. I own products from both, similar to my expectations either the Yankees or Red Sox will win their division…

I also don’t like some of litigation they’ve explored with keeping ‘pod’ a trademarked apple phenomenon. I just think they’ve transformed as a company in the last few years. I used to have reoccuring dreams of a siege

I was home with some friends (relatives ….whatever) and the house would be attacked but we would hold them off with hunting rifles and stuff. Weird part is that while I would think it was my house in the context of the dream ….it never was my actual house in real life. What’s more …..the house would change from dream to dream, but I would always feel like it was my house. I have kinda stopped having that dream.

Now I often dream about living in another house than the one I actually live in and after living there for a while I would discover hidden rooms that didn’t know about. Not like cobwebby basements and stuff either ….like a family room or something. I remember always thinking that it would be great place for my big screen….occasionally the room turns out to be haunted or something, but mostly I waked up pissed cause I really liked the dream house

The enigma with Sophia is she oftens groans and bemoans ...

about sexism; however, she herself seems conspicuously sexist in her own right.

It’s not really the libertarian versus liberal disconnect that causes friction — since debating economic issues doesn’t appear to be her bag, while we are both culturally progressive in our own way — but rather our differing stances regarding issues that concern gender.

I try to objectively view things from both sides of the coin, while she frequently possesses a gynocentric position that ostensibly promotes misandry over gender equality.

Plus, there’s instances that she demeans individuals of her own gender — such as referring to the Blazer Dancers as “stippers,” which is an untruth semantically — so it’s practically impossible to take her grumbling seriously.

Yes, Sophia comes across as a smart, intelligent individual, but she’s definitely not the most clear-headed person. So, until she overcomes her prejudices, I’ll take her commentary with a grain of salt.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.
