Brandon Roy Sues Trading Card Company
I don't usually read TMZ.com but reader Dave sent in a tip that Brandon Roy and eight other NBA players are suing Topps trading card company for not paying them in full for their autographs. Apparently Brandon's was worth $18, below Tracy McGrady's $50 and Derrick Rose's $25 but above D.J. Augustin, Russell Westbrook, T.J. Ford, and Antawn Jamison.
Shame on Topps for stiffing The Man.

Last thing I heard was that Brandon
was charging like $48 for autographs at signing events.

That would seriously disappoint me if it were true.

$48 for 5 seconds sound about right

pretty standard for players of all sports to be paid an appearance fee
the sports card shop was charging 48 per autograph, not necessarily brandon.
kobe gets paid for doing ad time with nike which makes your shoes more expensive. nothing wrong with brandon charging for an autograph session just like every other athlete who does it.

Betcha Topps isn't paying a bunch of players
Those guys just happen to have sharp agents (all are repped by Wasserman Media Group).

All nine combined are suing for $300,000.
Really? For PPL who are making millions, they are suing for a COMBINED 300k? seems like a waste of time.

a waste of time?
even if its 300 dollars what gives someone the right to cheat them? that would be like if you went to mcdonalds and they charged you $20 for a happy meal. even if you can live with out the $20 its still wrong.

The thing about legal rights...
Is you have to protect them in order to maintain the right to protect them, in many cases. Otherwise you set a bad precedent. Plus, it could easily be agent driven. They’re the ones who want to get paid more than anyone else.

That is a whole lot of money.
And if the legal fees and taxes and such added up to $299,999.99, it would be a go.
I’m afraid I’m a little different in my thinking though. $1 is worth the same whether you are a billionaire or whether you are broke.

He was getting paid more money per autograph than most people make per hour. He has
every right to fight for his money but I think it’s kind of funny that he just signed a 80 million dollar deal and is fighting for a few hundred thousand. I guess he will use that large chunk of change as Brandon Jr’s college fund.

I've got two things to say here.
1. I don’t blame a professional athlete for wanting some form of payment in return for his or her autograph, as sports memorabilia is a hot commodity in this society.
2. Why, though, do folks care about some professional athlete’s autograph? It seems pretty pointless to me.
Stupid people have stupid ideas.

Anyone who is asking...
…“why would he bother going after that small amount of money?”
You need to realise a few things:
1. In reality, whatever amount Roy is owed, is NOT a small amount of money — even if it’s 10k, any reasonable person, even a rich one, knows that that money could go to a worthy charity (amongst many other examples).
2. For many people, principle is the key here.
3. It is not “effort” for Roy (or McGrady or Jordan etc) to chase this money. This is simply another task that they pay their agents to do. The agents will chase the money in collaboration with the lawyers — they’ll take their cut / fee from the proceeds and Roy will get the rest. It’s pretty simple.
