hmmm...

his summer workout should not involve him taking multiple shots just inside the 3 point line….

It is a high school 3-point line

The current college 3-point line is a foot further out from the basket than that.

the Blazers should put their own "special" line for Travis

just outside the NBA 3 point line, just to make him feel comfortable shooting from there.

Of course it's good to see a video of Travis

and I hope he’s working out good and hard so that he comes into camp in shape (I’d say that in the last couple of years, he hasn’t really reached that point until a few weeks into the season).

That being said, is anybody else just a bit worried about what the video shows? Working on dribbling to be able to get around his defender. Working on a floater with either hand. In other words, working to be a better 1-on-1 player. Is that really what Portland needs out of Travis this year?

I’m not saying that the video is showing all that Travis might be working on. I’m saying that there are a lot of things I’d like to see him working on that wasn’t shown in the video. Is he working on rebounding position? Is he working on setting picks? Is he working on defense? Is he working on passing?

I’m sure that the video doesn’t show everything he’s doing this summer. But my fear is that he’s doing a lot of what shows up on the video and very little of the other things. I hope I’m wrong, but that’s my fear….

Do you know, specifically, what the Blazer organization has asked him to work on?

I’m betting he concentrates on what they’ve asked him to work on. Just a guess.

it wouldn’t make very good video.

Assuming the video shows what he's been focusing on this offseason

I’m still going to say it’s a good thing. Travis does one thing pretty well: create his own shot. I’d rather see him take his one bankable skill and go from good to great than see him going from awful to not as awful at rebounding.

At this point, we should all concede that Travis is what he is skill wise. He’s not going to become a defensive terror or a rebounding machine. He’s going to be an offensive threat off the bench. I’d rather see him develop an array of offensive moves and an ability to go left than see him work on rebounding.

by Magnum on Aug 29, 2009 4:09 PM PDT up reply actions

looks like he's working on his left hand, a little

based on Travis’ attire, they spliced together video from 4 different workout sessions

I know Outlaw likes hanging out at home during the offseason, but it would’ve been good for him to attend a big man’s camp (or three) at some point of his career. It looks like he’s put on some upper-body muscle, but if he’s gonna be playing backup PF does he really need to be dribbling the ball between his legs at the top of the key? It seems like he’s patterned his offensive moves by watching K*be, but I’m not sure that’s what the Blazers are going to need from him, this year. I’d much rather see video of him guarding a bigger player down in the post, and practicing boxing out and crashing the boards rather than working just on his offensive game

If he's going to be playing PF

Then, sure, he should do what he do, with some rebounding positioning work as well. I would rather have a banger, sure, but if he’s going to be our backup PF, what he does is the only reason he’s successful. Can you really see him playing the post as a PF? If he was playing the 3 I’d LOVE to see him working on his post game.

RT: So where is LMA?

in Dallas, working out with Chris Bosch and various University of Texas ballers (past and present)

It’s Travis’ vacation and he can do whatever he wants, but preparing for the season with his homies in Starksville is a whole lot different than what Oden’s been doing in Columbus, or Bayless in Phoenix or LMA in Dallas

The Blazers can’t make Outlaw enroll in a big man’s camp, and so far he hasn’t been so inclined

BTW, I read something about Ash trees the other day that I wanted to pass along, and this is as good a place as any…

In the late 1990’s, a pretty, iridescent green species of beetle, now known as the emerald ash borer, hitched a ride to North America with ash wood products imported from eastern Asia. In less than a decade, its larvae have killed millions of trees in the
Midwest, and continue to spread. They’ve killed more than 30 million ash trees in southeastern Michigan alone, with tens of millions more lost in Ohio and Indiana.. More than 7.5 billion ash trees=2 0are currently at risk.

This makes me wonder how long Louisville slugger will be making baseball bats out of ash

Maybe he should, but he sure won’t be posting videos of it. I would be all for working out with his teammates. I think it is great everyone get’s together early.

He could attend a big man’s camp. He might pick up a thing or two; however, Outlaw is never going to be a traditional big man. He does not have the body for it. His job is going to be to give LMA a couple of breathers, battle with other backup 4s, and try to hang on until LMA can get back in.

Obviously everyone that wants to be successful plays to their strengths, tries to perfect them, and with the rest of their time, they should work on reducing the effects of their weaknesses with the goal of eliminating them. This video shows Outlaw improving his strengths. It does not show him trying to reduce the effects of his weakness. In my opinion, a video showing him being okay at his weaknesses would be worse for his image.

Regarding your side note, I guess that is evolution on display. Maybe MLB will compensate by filling their bats with cork, since steroids are no longer encouraged.

you may have already read this, but

Ben had this to say about Outlaw’s workout video

I guess this is some type of unconventional workout. Two league sources hit me up with raised eyebrows about this video over the weekend. As in, “What is it, exactly, that he’s working on?” and “Why is he voluntarily putting video of himself struggling to dribble with his left hand on the internet?”

So I think storyteller, RFS1970 and I had some legtimate concerns re: how Travis chose to chronicle his pre-camp preperations

As far as the ash bats go, maple has been an attractive alternative for awhile, since Bonds helped make them popular. (But they tend to explode when broken, and this is a health risk for nearby players and fans.) I’ve read that they’re experimenting with composite materials, but there’s no way MLB will ever use aluminum bats, some pitcher would eventually get killed on a line drive.

Storyteller and two4larue already voiced my concerns, so I won't elaborate on anything.

Travis Outlaw, who’s shown practicing one-on-one skills, isn’t the man who the Portland Trail Blazers should have as its backup power forward on a championship contender. The sooner Outlaw is moved for Jeff Foster, Nick Collison, or Kurt Thomas, then it’s the better the team is as a whole.

I remember a couple of years ago, I saw a video of Brandon Roy RIDING A BICYCLE in the offseason. WHAT A JOKE!!! He should work on his endurance so he can actually play defense more than when he feels like it at the end of games. He should also have worked on running a fast break, because the next time I see him break down the floor on his man’s 3pt attempt or toss a long outlet after a rebound will be the first time. He needs to be traded if the Blazers expect to win a championship. I don’t care that he is a good guy, and provides great chemistry for team. WE NEED TO WIN AT ALL COSTS. /s

Roy was coming off knee surgery

riding a bike was the best way for him to improve his conditioning without putting stress on his knee. He probably did some pool work that summer, as well

I know you were trying to be facetious, but your comparison was apples-to-oranges. Travis has no physical restrictions, and if all he’s been working on this offseason are his ball handling skills and shooting, then he hasn’t prepared himself for the test that he failed, last April. (That’s to be come a trustworthy team defender and rebounder on a playoff contender)

So, let’s say the Blazers do trade Outlaw. What is he worth? Well, the last time the Blazers traded a bench player, they moved up two whole spots in the draft. I smell a championship. Thanks Sergio!

The time before that, when the Blazers traded a bench guy, they moved up a few spots in the draft. Awesome! Thanks Jarret, now we got a guy that will get just a few minutes off the bench at all this year.

I am not saying Sergio or Jarret should have remained on the Blazers, but it just illustrates what a bench player is worth. Not a whole lot. If you think Outlaw sucks, then don’t you think other GMs would have the same opinion? So, the value coming back would not likely be much. With Outlaw, we’ve got a good guy, freakish athlete, talented scorer, great chemistry, previous 6th man of the year candidate.

Also, that video was cut up an awful lot. Who knows what was edited out? Who knows what else was going on?

When was the last time you searched youtube for “rebound highlights”? Why on earth would anyone make a defense and rebounding video? Maybe I might for my own sake, but I sure wouldn’t post it for the world to see, because only a tiny portion of people care. If I look at NBA.com’s Top Videos, I see “Top Plays”, "Dunk of the Night, “Assist of the Night”, “Block of the Night”, “Steal of the Night”. There is no “Rebound of the Night” and there is no “Man on Man Defense of the Night”.

I can’t wait for Nike to launch the next commercial showing Lebron force his man to pass. I would run out and buy his shoes then. Nike should hire me!

Obviously Travis needs to improve a few parts of his game. It just seems ridiculous to bash a guy for working out. If he is working on his defense and rebounding, he better not forget about his shooting, dribbling, driving, dunking, and everything else he does well.

I get the paper, so I don't care!

by Name's Ash on Aug 29, 2009 11:31 AM PDT reply actions   1 recs

there is value in "working to improve what you already do well"

and no one is saying that Outlaw sucks, he’s good at what he does. The point is “what does the team need him to do as a backup PF?” The Blazers have enough small forwards, especially if Martell is all the way back. The bench will get scoring from Rudy, Webster and possibly Andre Miller. Outlaw has an advantage when he’s matched up against PFs, he can take them off the dribble or rise up and shoot over most of them, but is that the best-percentage play for Portland? He “used to be” one of the few bench scoring options that Nate could count on, but the team has transitioned from rebuilding mode to contending status, and what will be required of Travis should be changing as well: fewer minutes, less forced jumpers, and more attention to team defense and rebounding.

Will he adjust his focus to becoming more of a role player on a team heading for the finals? Based on his “out of this world money” tweet and what we saw in that training video, I think he’s doing what he thinks will be best for himself, and not concentrating on what his team will need him to contribute. It will be interesting to see how his workouts at the PF go, and if we can hear any comments from Portland’s coaching staff re: Outlaw as camp opens

He’ll likely play against other backup PFs, not Duncan and Nowitzki. He has Oden and Przy for defense and rebounding. I think he needs to improve there, but he does not need to be a world beater. This video doesn’t show Def and Reb cuz who wants to watch that?

Umm, wouldn’t you like the opportunity to get paid out of this world? He never said money is more important than winning.

Last I heard we could have the Grizzlies first round pick for him.

If unprotected, that would be more than worth it. Sorry to the Outlaw fans..I don’t mean to sound harsh. I just don’t think he has a role on this team and it would probably be better for him to play somewhere else. Believe me, when we got him I thought he could end up being our team’s savior, or at least a pseudo all-star type. I was wrong – but more because of the general direction the team went in and not necessarily his capabilities.

We have no idea what else he is doing for the other time that is not being filmed. I may be misunderstanding, but your comment reads like it is justifying anti-player sentiment by saying there is/was a rumor about a trade.

Not working out in previous summers was probably a mistake, but I have no idea what was going on with him. He has be injury free, maybe that is why, I don’t know. Working out like a mad fool, like Martell a couple of summers ago appears to have caused a stress fracture.

I don't think he is being bashed for working out during the summer.

I think some people are questioning his sudden motivation for working out during the summer, and whether that translates into him working on things that are best for the team or for himself.

I don’t think we can tell what he is fully working on from just watching a video. But since he knows he has been criticized for his relative lack of rebounding and defense, it might have been to his advantage to include some rebounding and defensive drills on the video.

With all due respect to Travis Outlaw, it'd be in everyone's best interest ...

if he played for a perennial lottery team on which he’d get to be an overpaid stat stuffer.

That style of play has created well-paying careers for me-first, high-volume shooting chucking combo forwards such as Al Harrington and Tim Thomas, who’ve made a nice living in that less than glorious role.

Yet, with regards to the Portland Trail Blazers, the ballclub is constructed as an annual playoff contender that should employ a team-oriented role player at its backup power forward spot. Unfortunately for Outlaw, players of his ilk don’t usually thrive in that position. Antoine Walker on the 2005-2006 Miami Heat is a rare exception.

Anyhow, Jeff Foster, Nick Collison, and Kurt Thomas are names who come to mind with the skill set to fill that void for Portland. Out of those three guys, Foster is the best interior defender and offensive rebounder, Collison is the most well-rounded and youngest, and Thomas is the best mid-range face-up shooter and defensive rebounder.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.

by AK1984 on Aug 30, 2009 6:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe or Maybe not

You could be right. My point is strictly about the video. He does show improvement in his game, and he shows he is working on getting more control. He added a floater, and it looks like he is working on his handle and reducing the twisting leg kick fall away jumper that drives a lot of people mad.

He doesn’t show defense and rebounding because it would be too difficult to do that effectively. People would dog him for playing defense against 5’10" coaches or less than NBA players. What NBA player is going to agree to be filmed during their vacation getting defensively dominated by Travis Outlaw? Same goes for rebounding.

I think our backup PF should be able to start at PF if LMA is injured,

and also play 30+ minutes at backup PF if LMA has to play backup center if GO or Joel is injured. I don’t think it’s enough for Travis to just “give LMA a few breathers each half”. That’s one key reason I think we need a legitimate backup PF that can defend other PF’s and rebound well. We now have plenty of scorers on this team without Travis, but we don’t have experienced backup players that can rebound well and defend well at PF.
