Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Desmond Mason a fit?

While there are rumors out that he wants a lot of minutes and a multi-year deal, who's gonna give it to him?

Des has had terrible stats and injury plagued last couple of seasons, but he's always been a role player and recently has played on teams that played rat-ball and all isolation where role players look terrible. He's supposedly an incredible character guy, a very hard worker, a lockerroom leader, and a very good team and individual defender.

I know his agent is asking for much more than he is worth (money and playing time wise) but I doubt he can get it anywhere else, and we might make a lot of sense for him.

Star-divide

I know we currently have 3 SF's as it stands, but if we were to say find some trade for Outlaw/Bayless or Outlaw/Blake (not sure for what) would you guys be interested in bringing in Des (who lives in Portland) as a mentor/vet at the 3rd SG/SF? I know his shooting is bad and stats are terrible, but as spot minute role player his stats might look a lot better, and he's not a chucker.

I think role players are always undervalued and look way worse when on bad young teams, because their skill is finding seams and being in the right positions, he could help anchor our defense in spot minutes and teach Batum and Martell a thing or two, plus he has experience with Nate.

Dead guys come cheap, don't they?

He wouldn’t be asking for a lot of money or a lot of PT.

I like Desmond Mason

But not as a Blazer, we have no need or desire to sign him. Bring on Outlaw for Turiaf!!

by blaze1 on Aug 25, 2009 12:19 AM PDT reply actions

that's what I'm saying though...

after a move similiar to Outlaw for Turiaf, perhaps Mason fits as a third option at 2/3 who can play defense at bare minimum and be a good locker room presence.

I wouldn’t mind even bringing in a vet 4 like Kurt Thomas to help teach the tricks to Greg and Lamarcus while hitting his rotations right.

If we could somehow figure out Outlaw/Bayless for an asset (picks, Rubio perhaps/etc) I would like this roster:

Miller/Blake/Koponen
Roy/Fernandez
Webster/Batum/Mason
Aldridge/Thomas
Oden/Pryzbilla

I dont think he is the right fit

Reference the front page article in whick there is a piece that says: Neil Paine looks at exactly how much Desmond Mason sucks.

In other words, if there’s a statistical category out there (at least in terms of the box score), odds are that it showed Desmond Mason to be a really bad player last season. Not just mediocre, not just below-average, but legitimately terrible.

Well, you'd have to have a minimum number of minutes played, obviously.

Otherwise you’re overwhelmed with scrubs. Largely due to the number of minutes played vs production, Des was at least in the top (bottom?) 3

I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

To those who said he would make a good mentor/ 3rd SF option check out the first line:

Apparently Desmond Mason can’t come to terms with the Thunder on a contract, because the two parties can’t agree on a role for him:

"Desmond is not ready to be relegated to a cheerleader and relegated to a mentor for the younger players," [Mason’s agent] said. "Desmond’s got a lot left in the tank."

by blazerbeliever97504 on Aug 25, 2009 12:59 PM PDT reply actions

true

but I’m under the assumption it might be more appealing to be a mentor on a 50-60 win young team than a 20-30 win young team.

by darkhelmit54 on Aug 25, 2009 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

what exactly does he bring that shows he can mentor someone?

Like hey Brandon + entire rest of the team you guys are all much better right now than i ever was, but let me tell you how this game of basketball works…

Why are you guys practicing a jumper and learning to play basketball?

Just marry a girl from Portland and be athletic on dunks and you’ll always have Portland fans bring you up as an option at SF, no matter how bad you play.

He never learned how to play basketball. All athlete. That doesn’t teach, or age well.

Desmond Mason was all athleticism and no skill, so my guess is he'd be a horrible "mentor" for ...

younger guys like Nicolas Batum. If anything, Mason’s craptacular play and complaining about playing time would be a detriment on a team like the Portland Trail Blazers. Honestly, it’s time to stick a fork in Mason; he’s toast.

Stupid people have stupid ideas.

I've liked Desmond Mason ....

… but I don’t really see a spot for him on the Blazers.

If Nate was thinking in terms on bringing on a role player who might also act as a mentor, then I want Ime Udoka, not Mason. But as the team stands now, there is no place for another SF / swingman in Portland.

I'd want a mentor who got the MOST out of his natural abilities

Not someone who got the least, like Desmond Mason.

Seems like a good, smart guy, but he’s a bad example for young athletes.
